Failure in business is when you realize what you’re doing is not going to work, and the pivot that follows is key to success. In Silicon Valley and New York, failures are famously celebrated and treated as valuable learning experiences. However, in many U.S. and Latin American cities with nascent entrepreneurial ecosystems, the term “failure” remains taboo.

This year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week, YPA Miami and Luminary Central bring you local entrepreneurs from various sectors to share their stories of success—peppered with failures both large and small—for a conversation aimed at breaking the taboo.

Join us on November 18 @ The Lab Miami as we discuss with high-profile entrepreneurs how their failures led to their subsequent success, and their learnings along the way. Luminary Central and YPA Miami have joined forces to present this panel discussion in an effort to lessen the taboo of “failure” and celebrate the value in its learnings.

Confirmed speakers*:
Michael “Mike” B. Fernandez, Chairman, MBF Healthcare Partners
Ivan Rapin-Smith, Director, Watsco Ventures
Lilia Luciano, Journalist & Founder of CoInspire (moderator)

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Dressing for Thanksgiving in the Tropics

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-What-To-Wear-To-Thanksgiving-In-The-Tropics-Title

Last year we established that celebrating the holidays “Miami style” is as much about eating lechón and plátanos as it is about rocking an outfit that screams “I’m from Miami” —one that adheres to the pillars of Miami’s unique and enviable style. Since the first holiday on the roster, Thanksgiving, does not come with a limiting color palette, we have free reign to let our creativity flow. That said, we figured you could use a little inspiration from your favorite Miami fashion obsessed blog to get you going so we’re bringing out photos from last year’s Thanksgiving archive. These photos were shot at Hotel Playa Cambutal in Panama where the TYM team will be spending the long holiday weekend again this year (and where we will likely be wearing similar outfits). A word to the wise, regardless of what outfit you select or where in the tropics you end up, don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent or you will feel their wrath come sun down. After all, we’re talking tropics here…

Miami International Auto Show is back for its 45th edition with more surprises than ever. Vitamin C Communications and one of the highest luxury brand cars is inviting you to come view live performances by the newest up-and-coming Latin Music artists on Friday, November 13, Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15. The guests will enjoy the shows while exploring what the new car models have to offer. A meet and greet with the artists will also occur after each performance.

The Miami International Auto Show is considered among America’s top five auto shows. This year Vitamin C and their partners introduce four of the hottest emerging Latin Music artists in the industry. The first performance by Javier Garcia on Friday, November 13 at 7 PM kicks off the event. Garcia utilizes his talents as a composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer, to bring together various genres and craft them into his own unique sound.

Saturday, November 14, brings two exciting performances. Tomás Diaz, at 2 PM, a musician from Cuba, starts off the evening. A member of The Spam Allstars, Diaz’s influence by greats such as Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Celia Cruz, as well as his experience collaborating with world-class musicians and his undeniable love for music, led him to his successful musical career. The second performance commences at 7 PM by Viva Más, a musical group from the Latin streets of Philadelphia. The group, consisting of five guys, stands out due to their rich harmonies and Latin rhythms, as well as their passion for music and unconditional need to share it with the world.

Last, but definitely not least, Sonlokos closes this year’s Miami International Auto Show at 5 PM on Sunday, November 15. The emerging Latin group formed in 2012 and already received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Tropical Album this year for “Locos por el Son.” Guests who stick around till the end will have the opportunity to meet & greet each artist.

Help support programs dedicated to eliminating the digital divide and the homework gap in Miami. EveryoneOn, a national nonprofit supported in significant part locally by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is participating in GiveMiamiDay 2015, a 24-hour online fundraiser to help energize its local activities to connect low-income families to affordable high-speed home Internet. For many Miami-Dade students, sitting in a McDonald’s parking lot, a city park, or riding public transportation is the only way to complete homework assignments. This not only puts them at a disadvantage, but keeps the family from accessing opportunities and information which could open doors to a brighter future. Don’t let Miami-Dade families rely on unsecure mobile phone Internet or public wifi, get them connected!

From painting to poetry, KIND Snacks (KIND) invites South Florida to join them in recognizing our community’s most talented young artists. Building upon the success of last year’s landmark campaign, KIND will again shine a light on the importance of youth arts education during Art Basel – this time in the form of a pop-up called The KIND Café: an #ichooseart experience.

Featuring a gallery of student artwork, live musical and spoken word performances by youth artists, and a hands-on community mural, The KIND Café will be an oasis for those who love and appreciate all things creative. Welcoming impromptu performances with an open mic, KIND invites any young artist to freely express themselves before a supportive audience.

The pop-up will also offer a complimentary “Bar Bar” where guests can pair their favorite KIND snack with craft beer, cheese and other selections, as well as the opportunity to take home exclusive art pieces featuring the work of local young artists.

With this event, KIND asks attendees to support the idea of art being accessible to all, something that can be a source of guidance and inspiration… all starting with the powerful choice to live a kinder, healthier, more positive life.

Aqua Art Miami, a boutique art exhibition and sister fair to the renowned Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami, has released its list of 45 international galleries for the fair’s 11th edition, taking place at the retro Aqua Hotel on South Beach from December 2 through December 6. Aqua Art Miami also announces the new director Katelijne De Backer, esteemed for her work with Art New York, Lehmann Maupin and The Armory Show, who carefully handpicked a dynamic range of galleries with strong emerging and mid-career artists.

“I am beyond thrilled to lead this year’s Aqua Art Miami as Director,” says De Backer. “Aqua is a little jewel of Miami Art Week—it provides exposure to the undiscovered works of young artists and galleries, which is a crucial aim of the fair and something that I personally love to support.”

With its intimate setting and refined presentation, Aqua Art Miami has cultivated a reputation as a fair to discover artists in the Aqua Hotel’s serene atmosphere. De Backer, a seasoned director, has been producing cutting-edge events since the beginning of her career. For over 10 years, she led The Armory Show to nearly triple in size and transformed it into one of the most important events on the international art marker’s calendar.

With all of her success, De Backer’s arrival to Aqua Art Miami will be sure to leave an indelible influence on this year’s fair. She has already made waves for the brand as the Director of the first-ever Art New York this past May, a position she will continue to lead into the following year. Under her direction, Aqua will host just over 100 artists with galleries from 28 cities and 10 countries.

Aqua Art Miami is billed to be one of the most highly anticipated contemporary art exhibitions in December. Opening night for VIP cardholders and select members of the press is Wednesday, December 2 from 3pm to 10pm. The fair will be open for public viewing starting Thursday, December 3rd from 12pm to 9pm and then through Saturday from 11am to 9pm, Sunday 11am – 6pm. There will be a daily complimentary shuttle service that will connect Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami with Aqua Art Miami. X Contemporary is a contemporary art fair established in 2015 under the direction of Matthew Eck with a focus on galleries and cultural institutions who promote the work of emerging and mid career artists.

Opening in the Wynwood district, across from Wynwood Walls, the 28,000 square foot art fair will feature a selection of major exhibitions and over 27 exhibitors from the US, Europe and South America. The art fair will emphasize a crossover between postwar and contemporary art in specially curated projects that add depth to the fair’s exhibitions, while considering the art historic importance of the trends and cultural influences impacting artists today.

X Contemporary is excited to highlight a few key exhibitions presented at the fair, as special projects that will enrich attendee’s experiences with curated, survey and retrospective style shows.

Michael Klein Arts LLC will present, Grace Hartigan 1960-1965, The Perry Collection, an exhibition of paintings and collages that represent Hartigan’s Abstract Expressionist style as it evolved in the early 1960s. Hartigan was a key innovator amongst painters of the New York School and was the only female artist included in the traveling exhibit T he New American Painting, designed to introduce European audiences to American art. The variety of paintings in this anticipated exhibition will highlight Hartigan’s style of vivid color and texture painted on a large scale. The fair will provide the perfect opportunity to reintroduce Hartigan’s work to a professional audience of dealers, curators and critics. After its exhibition at X Contemporary, the collection will tour to other institutions both in the US and abroad.

Pamela Willoughby, an art consultant based in New York City and East Hampton that has served as an advisor to many respected contemporary collections, will showcase her expertise in post modern, contemporary and emerging art. Presenting iconic handmade postcard collages created by JeanMichel Basquiat early in his career, alongside work by renowned UK based mural artist, Hush, Willoughby Art Advisory will give viewers the opportunity to consider the genesis of street art incorporation into the New York gallery scene and its global evolution through today. This thought provoking range of work w ill also include work b y artists P eter Dayton, Dora Frost and photography by the artistic team Cyril Christo & Marie Wilkinson.

Castle Fitzjohns Gallery presents the original Pop Shop sign, painted by Keith Haring for the Lafayette St. gallery in 1986. The 10 panel Pop Shop Sign conceived and executed by Keith Haring in collaboration with Andre Charles extended across and around the building during its renovation beginning in the winter of 1986. The sign was made from an original sketch drawn by Haring and served as a temporary placard until it was removed from the building in the fall of 1987. At the time of its removal by the City of New York, artist Robin Van Arsdol acquired it for his private collection where it has remained ever since. It has been exhibited internationally and was featured in Germany in 2010 and and was then sent to an exhibition at the Russian State Art Museum in Moscow in May 2011.

TIMEBAG, the independently organized artist project based in Colombia, will present a survey of work by emerging, midcareer and established Colombian artists, titled Colombia N.O.W. T his project curated by Carlos Uribe, Gabriel Mario Vélez and Maria Luisa Vélez, invites a public discussion on the country and culture of Colombia today. In this dynamic exhibition, the artists reflect on several social, political and emotional landscapes of a contemporary Colombia. The presentation will include works by artists, Libia Posada, Jesús Abad Colorado, Fredy Alzate, Juan Raúl Hoyos, Víctor Garcés, Paulo Licona, Harold Ortiz, Juan David Henao, Sara Herrera, Juan Obando, and José Moreno.

International artist network, Berlin Collective works to connect artists with new exhibiting and collaborating opportunities. The group’s presentation at X Contemporary will include works by artists Eric Slayton, Elena Lyakir and Javier Barrera. I n presenting these works together, the comparison becomes relevant to understanding each artist’s journey and discovery. The selection highlights bold work by Eric Slayton and the addition to his G ravity Collection. As well as, new work by artist Eleana Lyakin, titled City Parks Romance. The presentation will also showcase a intaglio prints series by Javier Barrera, in which the artist uses hybrid forms of traditional and digital printmaking.

Fridge Art Fair’s philosophy is to make the art fair scene accessible to diverse exhibitors and visitors alike. “Our booth fees are low,” said Eric Ginsburg, the Artist and Founding Director known throughout the world for his Dog and Cat paintings. Admission is ten dollars but on the door policy is: “No one is ever turned away. Generous donations will help keep this a reality.”

Fridge Art Fair celebrates creative freedom and diversity, encouraging exhibitors to explore all possibilities within their spaces as, in the words of Fridge Curator Linda DiGusta, “exploration, energetic participation and enthusiastic support create transformative energy, rules kill spirit.” Exhibitors are drawn from the world art community and include dealers, collectives and unrepresented artists – many “regulars,” and some new to Fridge.

This year the Fair welcomes a major collaboration with Art Shape Mammoth, who will curate and present large-scale sculpture, performances – dance and movement artist Laura Gordon will work with the large-scale paintings of new Fridge artist Iliyan Ivanov as a backdrop and Anna Marie Shogren will dance a durational performance – and guest artists from Shanghai, China in addition to their core program.

Special presentations also include an exhibition by students of Virginia Erdie’s youth art program in Miami, a screening of Katherine Delaney’s documentary/love letter to the drag world, Charmed Life, and works of Kazuko Miyamoto and Eva LeWitt presented by Gallery 128, the Lower East Side fixture and magnet that hosted the inaugural Fridge Art Fair in May 2013.

Founder renowned artist Eric Ginsburg http://www.worldoferic.com will present his signature pet portraits and accept commissions to benefit BARC Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, NY – bring a photo of Fido or Fluffy and save a life! His work will be featured in the exhibition. Additionally, a satellite exhibition curated by the Fair will open in November, hosted by LGBT Visitor Center, 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Details to be announced.

Fridge Art Fair, a play on “Freeze,” was born in 2013 on the Lower East Side, as a satellite of Frieze New York. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge, “Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014. The 2015 edition will mark Fridge’s Miami Beach debut, where the fair’s unique character will complement the offerings of the nearby Pulse and NADA shows, as well as Scope, Aqua and Art Basel in South Beach.

UNTITLED’s curatorial team, Artistic Director, Omar Lopez-Chahoud, curators Christophe Boutin and Melanie Scarciglia, along with Programming Director Amanda Schmitt, have identified a selection of special projects and programming that will engage visitors in the exhibitors’ booths and at various locations throughout the fair, indoors and outside.

“Working closely with our exhibitors we selected a strong group of special works by artists that are cross-generational,” states Amanda Schmitt. “The special programming elements from our non-profit and artist-run participants are integrated into the fair’s layout, demonstrating UNTITLED’s commitment to creating an environment unlike other art fairs.”

Visitors will be greeted by three special projects selected from submissions by UNTITLED exhibitors. Near the entrance will be a large-scale sculptural installation by Ronald Bladen presented by Loretta Howard Gallery (New York). Bladen was an influential artist who inspired a younger generation of minimalists such as Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt. His work Chevrons (1974) explores the power and significance of this fundamental geometric shape, ubiquitous for its use in insignia, in language as punctuation, as a mathematical sign, and in design. The work consists of nine monolithic black sculptures that are arranged evenly in three rows, activating and highlighting the space between and surrounding the sculpture.

Los Angeles-based artist Scoli Acosta’s Earth Quartet (2013) is comprised of a series of pentagonal canvases, edged with jingles fashioned from flattened bottle caps. The work was inspired by Chris Marker’s documentary film, The Sixth Side of the Pentagon, that captures the 1967 Vietnam protest at the Pentagon. Acosta’s incorporation of playful bottle cap jingles also nods to Abbie Hoffman’s sarcastic attempt to levitate the Pentagon, in hopes it would turn orange and vibrate. Earth Quartet is presented by Galerie Laurent Godin (Paris).

Elise Ferguson’s paintings do not involve paint; she uses materials that are associated with sculpting: plaster and wood. Coloring the plaster with pigment, and layering the surface to a sculptural level, Ferguson’s work is based on mathematical puzzles, design and geometric variation. Ferguson’s Tess Ramble (2015), presented by Romer Young Gallery (San Francisco), is a three panel site-specific work that will be positioned in direct dialogue with the two other special projects, completing a minimal geometric trinity.

MIAMI PROJECT EDITION FOUR
Miami Project’s fourth edition will feature a unique confluence of historical and contemporary art, offering fair-goers a distinct Miami Beach experience. On the heels of Miami’s Unrealism exhibition – a direct response to one of the biggest new trends in the market today – and the figurative bend of MoMA PS1’s Greater New York show, Miami Project will include several of the world’s top figurative painting programs. The resurgence of this timeless form of art-making has found its new place at the foreground of the global art scene, and Miami Project’s leading galleries that focus on paintings of the person will be a must-visit stop for all those seeking pristine examples of bold figuration.

Joining Miami Project for the first time, New York City’s Hirschl & Adler Modern will show work by John Moore and Christopher Wilmarth. Fellow first-time exhibitor Jill Newhouse Gallery will exhibit rare works on paper by Pierre Bonnard and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Making its Miami debut, Lori Bookstein Fine Art will show mixed media on panel by Hiroyuki Hamada with a series of screenprints on steel enamel plates by Jennifer Bartlett. Robert Fontaine Gallery will present significant work by Robert Rauschenberg including the artist’s 2007 Expresser (From The Runts Series) and 1980’s mixed media work Rush 3. Deborah Force Fine Art joins Miami Project to exhibit Charles Ephraim Burchfield’s Butterfly Festival, 1949-56, and a rare 1929 Edward Hopper watercolor on paper. Catharine Clark Gallery will present sculpture by Wanxin Zhang, Masami Teraoka’s 1984 watercolor and pencil on paper Work Painting for Wave Series, and Chris Doyle’s 2014 video The Fluid. Claire Oliver Gallery will show an exhibition of photographs by Laetitia Soulier and oil on canvas by Matt Bahen. Nancy Toomey Fine Art will present works on paper by Lynda Benglis and Larry Bell. Winston Wächter Fine Art will show a new monumental work on paper by Zaria Forman, Richard Levy Gallery will present painting by Mel Davis and Matt Magee, and Sasha Wolf Gallery will show large scale photography by Doug Fogelson and Christopher Rodriguez. To learn more about Miami Project, please visit miami-project.com

ART ON PAPER MIAMI
A Time Out New York Critic’s Pick and one of The New York Times’ must see March 2015 art fairs, Art on Paper New York welcomed over 18,000 visitors and played host to compelling, large-scale installations and critically acclaimed exhibitions over four buzzing days. The fair’s fresh Miami counterpart will be a similar forum for the exploration of a medium – a space for intimate conversation between exhibitor and collector with a refreshing focus on the artwork itself. Sasha Wolf returns as the fair’s Artistic Director working with James Stroud of Center Street Studio to guide the fair’s tightly curated paper-based program. To learn more about Art on Paper Miami, please visit thepaperfair.com/miami

TOP FOOD AND DRINK
From December 1 – 6, The Deauville Beach Resort will play host to some of the country’s best food and cocktail programs. Miami’s renowned The Broken Shaker will take over the hotel’s beverage service, offering visitors the exclusive opportunity to experience the cocktail program recently voted this year’s Best Hotel Bar in America. Video of Giralda Under the Stars by Mr Q 305

If it is the first Friday in November it means two things: One is the temperatures are getting cooler (ok…maybe a degree or two) and the other one is: Giralda Under the Stars, that gastronomic celebration of all the excellent cuisine available in that one magic block of picturesque Giralda Avenue known as “Restaurant Row”.

The Coral Gables Business Improvement District organizes the event which this year includes thirteen restaurants. Giralda Under the Stars runs on the first Friday of every month until April. So if you missed it this time you’ll be able to catch it in December.

In collaboration with the Harold Golen Gallery, FETA Foundation presents Stephen Marotto in a program of music for solo cello and electronics, all of which explore the boundaries of the instrument in a unique way. “In ImagE, Roger Reynolds creates beautiful textures that juxtapose the natural harmonics and resonance of the instrument with virtuosic grace note flurries. Mark Andre knits a delicate sound world, most of which occupies the space on the threshold of silence in iv 2. The music utilizes physical gestures on the instrument that are precisely mapped out, mediating un-pitched materials to create tension. In contrast, Mourning Fog by Rand Steiger features beautiful melodic figures derived from distinct harmonic spectra. The cello is augmented by live electronics. The cello sounds are recorded, processed and then recombined. The final piece, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ai Limiti Della Notte unleashes the tensions hidden in the residuals of the strings.”

In collaboration with the St. Bede Episcopal Chapel, FETA Foundation presents Andy Lee in a contemporary piano performance. The program opens with a piece by Greek-Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis, Fantasia No. 5, Lumen de Lumine. Inspired by the church bells of Pythagorion, the music seems to emerge from the depths of the piano into lush chords and repeating figures. The second work, Scott Unrein’s “bird-drawn in the sky of light,” was premiered by R. Andrew Lee in 2013 during his UK tour. Written in discrete musical cells, the performer is afforded the freedom to choose what elements of each cell are played and for how long. The second half of the program will be Adrian Knight’s “Obsessions.” Commissioned by Lee, this work presents an extended exploration of stubborn habits, routines, and patterns layered over Knight’s beautiful, extended harmonic language. Do not miss an opportunity to interact with the composer himself, as he is flying in to attend the concert!

Photographs of South Beach Seafood Festival by Mr Q 305

Miami’s globally-recognized annual Stone Crab season kicked off at the 3rd annual South Beach Seafood Festival. Thousands flocked to 7th & Ocean Drive to experience the seasonal selections of Miami’s top chefs and restaurants during the all-day festival. The South Beach Seafood Festival also featured live music, culinary and mixology demonstrations, a kid’s zone, health village, and VIP hospitality benefits. There was fun for all ages with countless interactive zones, retail villages, and a sports bar showing the day’s college football match-ups right on the sand.

A portion of proceeds from the South Beach Seafood Festival benefit the Community Initiatives Foundation, who’s program EAT SMART fulfills the perfect balance between youth nutrition and childhood development by providing healthy weekend meals and frequent outdoor activity to children in Miami Beach.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Fall in the Outer Banks

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Fall-In-Outer-Banks-Corolla-10

A huge perk of living in a city with consistent weather year-round is not having to think about the functionality of our clothes. That is, we rarely have to worry about dressing to face different metereological conditions (wind chill, rain, snow, etc.) so we have come to perceive clothes as more of an accessory, less a survival necessity. Then we travel and this mentality—groomed by years of not having to worry about whether our outfit will help or hinder us in an apocalypse—gets us in trouble. It’s the reason we found ourselves this week in the Outer Banks facing 64-degrees and 13mph winds in nothing but ripped jeans and a thin, long-sleeve t-shirt. (Apparently what we call “Fall clothes” in Miami is severely inadequate for dealing with actual Fall weather.) Although frozen solid and absolutely miserable, we decided to grin and bear it for a long overdue Miami style post because nothing is prettier with Fall clothing photo shoots than actual signs of Fall in the background. Plus, if the clothes are useless at keeping us warm, they damn well better make us look cute. What do you think? Continue reading “#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Fall in the Outer Banks”

Photographs of The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival by Mr Q 305

South Florida celebrated seafood, waterfront living and the start of the stone crab season by way of The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival at Peacock Park. For the third year in a row, event organizers brought together an array of seafood vendors offering bushels of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, stone crab, fish and clams prepared in a variety of ways.

The well known Casablanca Fish Market overflowed with fish from around the world that folks were able to select, purchase and take home after they had their fill at the festival. The Kitchen Lab featured cooking demos by popular South Florida restaurants.

The event was very family oriented. Children played inside the inflatable pirate village in the Family Fun Zone. There was also VIP Island for those who preferred a more exclusive experience.

As if all this wasn’t enough, the afternoon had a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, island escapism and reggae. The Festival also featured several nautically themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and home decor.

The folks at SWARM have definitely put together another winner!…We can’t wait to be back next year!

FuckUp Nights Miami invites you to meet Chef Samuel Gorenstein, My Ceviche and Lenny Medina, Artist, Producer, Songwriter. Join these successful personas as they break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure” and communicate failure as a positive step everyone must overcome on the road to greatness.

COCKTAIL DRINKS BY AMBHAR TEQUILA AND BLACKWELL RUM + LIGHT NOM NOMS WILL BE SERVED

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.
What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.
Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

Curated by Tumelo Mosaka, “Through the Eyes of Others” aims to provide a critical platform for re-imaging the past, present and future possibilities of blackness as something more complex than race. What words, actions and images can interrogate the culture of violence, distrust and hatred applied to black people? While stereotypical images of black people continue to reinforce negative attitudes, work in the exhibit resists and defies easy consumption of these subjects. Participating artists include Ebony G. Patterson, Dread Scott, Hank Willis Thomas, and Bernard Williams.
