Video of Giralda Under the Stars by Mr Q 305

If it is the first Friday in November it means two things: One is the temperatures are getting cooler (ok…maybe a degree or two) and the other one is: Giralda Under the Stars, that gastronomic celebration of all the excellent cuisine available in that one magic block of picturesque Giralda Avenue known as “Restaurant Row”.

The Coral Gables Business Improvement District organizes the event which this year includes thirteen restaurants. Giralda Under the Stars runs on the first Friday of every month until April. So if you missed it this time you’ll be able to catch it in December.

Late night, the rooftop lounge plays host to an international who’s who, featuring a rotating roster of some of Miami’s top DJs and an ambiance that’s chic, sexy and quintessentially Miami.
FIFTY’s stunning interiors are layered with grained marbles and woods, Japanese woodblock-inspired prints and plants, with salt air and fresh floral blossoms scenting the sky-high atmosphere. From nearly every angle, the boundless view of Biscayne Bay below underlines FIFTY’s unparalleled perspective atop Viceroy Miami.

In collaboration with the Harold Golen Gallery, FETA Foundation presents Stephen Marotto in a program of music for solo cello and electronics, all of which explore the boundaries of the instrument in a unique way. “In ImagE, Roger Reynolds creates beautiful textures that juxtapose the natural harmonics and resonance of the instrument with virtuosic grace note flurries. Mark Andre knits a delicate sound world, most of which occupies the space on the threshold of silence in iv 2. The music utilizes physical gestures on the instrument that are precisely mapped out, mediating un-pitched materials to create tension. In contrast, Mourning Fog by Rand Steiger features beautiful melodic figures derived from distinct harmonic spectra. The cello is augmented by live electronics. The cello sounds are recorded, processed and then recombined. The final piece, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ai Limiti Della Notte unleashes the tensions hidden in the residuals of the strings.”

In collaboration with the St. Bede Episcopal Chapel, FETA Foundation presents Andy Lee in a contemporary piano performance. The program opens with a piece by Greek-Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis, Fantasia No. 5, Lumen de Lumine. Inspired by the church bells of Pythagorion, the music seems to emerge from the depths of the piano into lush chords and repeating figures. The second work, Scott Unrein’s “bird-drawn in the sky of light,” was premiered by R. Andrew Lee in 2013 during his UK tour. Written in discrete musical cells, the performer is afforded the freedom to choose what elements of each cell are played and for how long. The second half of the program will be Adrian Knight’s “Obsessions.” Commissioned by Lee, this work presents an extended exploration of stubborn habits, routines, and patterns layered over Knight’s beautiful, extended harmonic language. Do not miss an opportunity to interact with the composer himself, as he is flying in to attend the concert!

Photographs of South Beach Seafood Festival by Mr Q 305

Miami’s globally-recognized annual Stone Crab season kicked off at the 3rd annual South Beach Seafood Festival. Thousands flocked to 7th & Ocean Drive to experience the seasonal selections of Miami’s top chefs and restaurants during the all-day festival. The South Beach Seafood Festival also featured live music, culinary and mixology demonstrations, a kid’s zone, health village, and VIP hospitality benefits. There was fun for all ages with countless interactive zones, retail villages, and a sports bar showing the day’s college football match-ups right on the sand.

A portion of proceeds from the South Beach Seafood Festival benefit the Community Initiatives Foundation, who’s program EAT SMART fulfills the perfect balance between youth nutrition and childhood development by providing healthy weekend meals and frequent outdoor activity to children in Miami Beach.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Fall in the Outer Banks

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Fall-In-Outer-Banks-Corolla-10

A huge perk of living in a city with consistent weather year-round is not having to think about the functionality of our clothes. That is, we rarely have to worry about dressing to face different metereological conditions (wind chill, rain, snow, etc.) so we have come to perceive clothes as more of an accessory, less a survival necessity. Then we travel and this mentality—groomed by years of not having to worry about whether our outfit will help or hinder us in an apocalypse—gets us in trouble. It’s the reason we found ourselves this week in the Outer Banks facing 64-degrees and 13mph winds in nothing but ripped jeans and a thin, long-sleeve t-shirt. (Apparently what we call “Fall clothes” in Miami is severely inadequate for dealing with actual Fall weather.) Although frozen solid and absolutely miserable, we decided to grin and bear it for a long overdue Miami style post because nothing is prettier with Fall clothing photo shoots than actual signs of Fall in the background. South Florida celebrated seafood, waterfront living and the start of the stone crab season by way of The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival at Peacock Park. For the third year in a row, event organizers brought together an array of seafood vendors offering bushels of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, stone crab, fish and clams prepared in a variety of ways.

The well known Casablanca Fish Market overflowed with fish from around the world that folks were able to select, purchase and take home after they had their fill at the festival. The Kitchen Lab featured cooking demos by popular South Florida restaurants.

The event was very family oriented. Children played inside the inflatable pirate village in the Family Fun Zone. There was also VIP Island for those who preferred a more exclusive experience.

As if all this wasn’t enough, the afternoon had a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, island escapism and reggae. The Festival also featured several nautically themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and home decor.

The folks at SWARM have definitely put together another winner!…We can’t wait to be back next year!

FuckUp Nights Miami invites you to meet Chef Samuel Gorenstein, My Ceviche and Lenny Medina, Artist, Producer, Songwriter. Join these successful personas as they break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure” and communicate failure as a positive step everyone must overcome on the road to greatness.

COCKTAIL DRINKS BY AMBHAR TEQUILA AND BLACKWELL RUM + LIGHT NOM NOMS WILL BE SERVED

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.
What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.
Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

Orchestra Miami inaugurates its new Family Fun Concert Series with Prokofiev’s classic tale told with a unique Halloween “twist”! Peter and the Werewolf, performed by Orchestra Miami, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi, will perform with special guest narrator “The Necromancer” (a.k.a. Neil Tobin), who will illustrate the story with magic tricks and special effects. Kids will be treated to cookies and juice after the performance and are encouraged to come in Halloween costume for the parade!

The new Family Fun Concert Series is modeled in the tradition of the former “Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children” series from Doreen Marx and Bryan Krulewitch and is designed to introduce children to a wide variety of art forms such as opera, theater, ballet and symphonic music, through exciting, kid-friendly performances.

There are three performances beginning on Halloween. Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 PM in Aventura (Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School Auditorium, 1410 NE 215 Street), Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4:00 PM in Doral (Divine Savior Academy, 10311 NW 58 Street) and Sunday, Nov. 1 at 4:00 PM in Pinecrest (Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW 57 Avenue). Single tickets are $10 for kids (ages 3-17) and $15 for adults. Subscriptions for the five concert series are available at $45 for kids, $60 adults and $195 for a family pack (2 adults and 2 children). Curated by Tumelo Mosaka, “Through the Eyes of Others” aims to provide a critical platform for re-imaging the past, present and future possibilities of blackness as something more complex than race. What words, actions and images can interrogate the culture of violence, distrust and hatred applied to black people? While stereotypical images of black people continue to reinforce negative attitudes, work in the exhibit resists and defies easy consumption of these subjects. Participating artists include Ebony G. Patterson, Dread Scott, Hank Willis Thomas, and Bernard Williams.

Michael Pirolo Makes Tortellini

This past summer, Italian cuisine master and all around bad-ass chef, Michael Pirolo, prepared a private Italian feast filled with Prosciutto di Parma for some very lucky guests.

The ham is almost as old as Italian cuisine itself with the earliest references to Prosciutto di Parma dating back all the way to Roman times around 100 BC. The ham has a very strict certification. By law it can only be produced in the gently rolling countryside surrounding the city of Parma in north central Italy. The ham must use Italian-born and bred pigs raised according to the highest standards on which they are monitored, inspected and traced.

Once the ham is ready to be cured, a highly experienced maestri salatori (aka salt master) applies a minimal amount of sea salt necessary to produce a ham with the desired savory-sweet flavor profile. This is also the reason why Prosciutto di Parma tastes less salty than other ham varieties. At the end of the curing process, every leg of Prosciutto di Parma is checked for quality and then fire branded with the five-pointed Parma Crown, signifying its guarantee of authenticity and quality.

In the above video, Pirolo makes one of the dishes he prepared at this special Prosciutto di Parma dinner and shares the back story of why tortellini are shaped the way they are.

The exhibition, Through the Eyes of Others, aims to provide a critical platform for re-imaging the past, present and future possibilities of blackness as something more complex than race. While label images of black people continue to reinforce negative attitudes, the exhibition showcases the strength and resilience of a community that is finding unity through art. With events such as Art of Transformation, OLCDC hopes to achieve its goal of transforming Opa-locka into one of the region’s better known centers of the arts, culture and living. This exhibition is a vital part of gaining awareness for a community of choice where people want to live, work, play and create, which is made possible through OLCDC’s investment in the community.

Dolphin Mall is set to celebrate the holiday season by creating a magical winter wonderland experience for shoppers, complete with nightly snowfall powered by the imagination of children. The annual tradition begins Wednesday, Nov. 25 and will continue through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016.

“We’re excited to once again host this beloved holiday tradition at Dolphin Mall for families and visitors,” said Madelyn Bello Calvar, the mall’s marketing and sponsorship director. “This annual event is so special and a unique way for us to showcase an enchanted winter wonderland that Floridians don’t typically experience.”

To help create a memorable snowfall for the entire family, Dolphin Mall will be giving away magical wands to children under the age of 12 (while supplies last). At the start of each nightly snowfall, young magicians can wave their wondrous wands to unleash the snowstorm and create a glistening winter wonderland.

Festive snow flurries will take place inside the Ramblas Plaza every night at 7 p.m., with an additional snowfall at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wands will be distributed to participating families 30 minutes prior to start of each nightly snowfall. There will be no snow on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2016).

Located in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami, the venue features a range of musical styles from Afro-Latin to Parisian pop, bringing international bands, as well as renowned and emerging DJs from around the world, center stage in stunning costume designs by the famed stylist Danny Santiago. In addition to an eclectic musical lineup, El Tucán houses a resident 12-piece Latin orchestra, carefully curated by Grammy award-winning pianist, composer and producer Marlow Rosado, that is reminiscent of the big bands from the jazz eras of the 40s and 50s. Food and drink also are a mainstay at El Tucán, featuring luxe libations by Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi of Bar Lab and Caribbean and South American fare that include hints of Amazonian ingredients created by Chef Jean Paul Lourdes. Miami, the city you and I love is ranked one of the top US cities in human trafficking for sex trade. We want to help the survivors among us by building Miami’s first long-term facility, named Glory House of Miami which will also offer medical, spiritual, mental health, social, legal support, reintegration, education, arts, vocational training, job and life skills training to recover and give these 18-25 year old survivors a second chance at rebuilding their lives.

Your support via a donation for our silent auction will be invaluable to reach our goal at this event; “Freedom and Arts” to come out of the streets will help trafficking survivors build a new future.

Beginning in Miami and Miami Beach during the post World War II era as a local variation of modernist architectural movements in other parts of the world, MiMo buildings add glamour, fun, and material excess to otherwise stark, minimalist, and efficient styles.

The Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and Deauville hotels and garden style apartments are stunning examples of MiMo – featuring acute angles, delta wings, sweeping curved walls, and soaring pylons. Like Art Deco, there is a strong preservationist movement to preserve MiMo from the wrecking ball. The present development boom is relentless in its quest to replace this architecture with highrises.
