David Dermer, former Miami Beach’s mayor will give a lecture on the politics of development in Miami Beach 1995-2005, focusing on the Save Miami Beach movement and his efforts battling big money to try to limit development on Miami Beach.

David Dermer Bio:
On September 9, 2005, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer was returned to office for a third and final term. Dermer was the second youngest mayor in city history when first elected to the post in 2001 at age 38. Only his father, former Miami Beach Mayor Jay Dermer was younger, when he was elected mayor in 1967.
Prior to becoming Mayor, David Dermer also served a successful 4-year term as a Miami Beach City Commissioner. A dedicated community activist and attorney, Dermer first emerged onto the Miami Beach political scene as the leader of the successful “Save Miami Beach” (SMB) ballot initiative, a movement aimed at curbing overdevelopment along the City’s waterfront. Dermer’s grassroots organization gathered more than 6000 voter signatures, placing the charter amendment on the ballot. The SMB campaign won over voters and the initiative passed overwhelmingly, despite the fact that SMB’s opposition spent $2 million to Dermer’s $25,000. David Dermer graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1980. He received his Bachelors Degree in Justice from American University in Washington D.C. and subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law. He served as a State Prosecutor for the 17th Judicial Circuit after graduation and in 1990 he opened his own firm, David Dermer Law Offices. He currently teaches History and Government at Miami Beach Senior High School.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Design and Film Superstars in the Magic City

In Miami we have a stellar pool of locals from which to be inspired and learn but one of the other perks of living in the Magic City is its access to top notch talent from abroad. Whether its the influx of world renown artists during Art Basel, DJs during Miami Music Week, or designers during Miami Swim Week, we have an inordinate amount of access to superstars and, thereby, inspiration. For a “normal week”—that is, a non-themed week—last week saw a heavy influx of celebrity talent. We were particularly excited that three of these individuals, known for their accomplishments in design or film, shook up the style conversation while in our sunny shores.

Gia Coppola is recognized for her filmmaking genius. Last week she sent a sliver of that genius down to Miami on her behalf in the form of Boccaccio ’70, the last film of a personally-curated series of classic Italian pictures that also traveled to New York and LA this summer. For the final installment of the Gia Coppola x Peroni Nastro Azzurro Grazie Cinema Series, Miami tastemakers gathered at the Miami Beach Edition to munch on hors d’oeuvres, sip on Peroni, and relish in Italian creativity. The breezy evening spent under the Miami stars became as much a muse for those gathered as the film itself.

Meanwhile, at Jade Brickell, Mexican designer Kris Goyri made his Miami debut with a private sale organized by fellow Mexican and marketing guru, Polina Panopoulos. At the event, Goyri presented his Spring/Summer and Fall Winter 2015 collections, as well as introduced exclusive pieces from his 2016 collection. “I love to make women feel beautiful, sexy, and unique,” said Goyri. “Coming to Miami made me discover a cosmopolitan woman that is looking to stand out.” Now, with his elegant, fresh, and beautiful designs at our reach (he is hoping to be back in November), we can.

The star-studded week concluded at the Fontainebleau, where celebrity designer Diann Valentine hosted a meet and greet at Modern Luxury Bride South Florida and The Caribbean‘s Afternoon of Bridal Luxury event. During a gourmet sit-down luncheon, local brides were treated to a keynote speech in which Valentine highlighted bridal trends and talked about celebrating the uniqueness of each love story. Valentine also gave the brides a sneak peek of the new collection of her signature “Valentine cuff“. Rest assured, the upcoming wedding season will be one worth watching.

South Florida’s youth will have an opportunity to proudly show off they’re wonderfully created and colorful costumes in celebration of their rich Caribbean culture this carnival season. Over 350 young children will participate in the Miami Broward, Jr. Carnival parade and competition on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Central Broward Park (3700 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill, FL 33311). Gates open at 12:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 2 p.m. Parking fee is $1.50 per adult and admission into the event is $10. Kids under 10 years old are free.

This annual Caribbean inspired family event fosters artistic development and creative freedom, all while inspiring young people to take up the torch of Carnival tradition and carry it high. Young masqueraders will be judged based on their creativity, presentation, originality and craftsmanship of their vibrant and colorful masquerade costumes.

“We are looking forward to a safe and successful Junior Carnival this year as we continue to promote and sustain the culture of the Caribbean people,” says Rose Kelly, Bandleader of Heritage TnT, Jr. Carnival band. “The youths are the future of our Carnival, so we hope to bring more awareness of our culture to them.”

The event encourages young Caribbean-Americans to embrace and celebrate their Caribbean culture by participating in an age-old island tradition. Miami Broward Jr. Carnival is also one of the symbols of diversity and inclusion as there are non-Caribbean children of various backgrounds that also participate in the parade and festivities.

“Although we are second and third generation West Indians, this is our culture. Its longevity depends on the positive inclusion of the children. They are the ones who will carry the torch and ensure that our Carnival never dies,” says Giselle d ’Wassi One, Bandleader for Wassi Babes Jr. Carnival.

“Because breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women, the ‘Fifty Shades of Pink’ Awards Luncheon is the embodiment of MWWR’s global vision with a local mission. Our signature events are where heels and hearts meet to benefit imperative women’s health initiatives,” she said.

The benefit tournament will be held at the resort’s newly redesigned and iconic Blue Monster golf course, which has been home to the PGA Tour’s World Golf Championship for more than 50 years. For nine years, the Eric Trump Foundation has been dedicated to raising money for children battling life-threatening diseases at St. Jude Hospital. All proceeds from the tournament will be presented to St. Jude during the post-event awards ceremony.

Anyone can sign up to take part of this exciting and impactful event, and there are a variety of options available so that anyone who wants to support the worthy cause can do so. Starting at $350 for individual players, participation levels also include Foursome, Corporate Foursome and Gold Sponsor. All participants will receive complimentary valet parking and an on-course lunch, as well as a gift for each player.

Using only Trump-owned and operated facilities to cut down on venue costs, as well as full-time volunteers, pro-bono celebrity hosts and performances and donated food and beverage, the Eric Trump Foundation has achieved one of the lowest expense ratios of any charity in the world and has also grown to be one of the largest foundations in the nation, pledging nearly $28 million to St. Jude.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Standout Style Moments of Summer

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Standout-Summer-Style-Title

It is with great sadness that we remind you Summer 2015 ended yesterday. And, while meteorologically this means little in the Sunshine State, there’s something about the official start of Fall that messes with Miami’s carefree summer vibe. Save for the last few weeks, this summer was a fantastic one for us. In June, we explored Miami, refining our itineraries of free things to do around Miami and for discovering Miami in under 24 hours to arm ourselves for visitors during the busy season. In July, we bonded with bloggers in Miami and beyond while covering Miami Swim Week and got to interview Sharleen Ernster during the release of her debut collection. August brought us to a triumphant close of the season as we moved into our new office at WeWork.

We are grateful for all these memorable milestones but we would be remiss to overlook the standout style moments that accompanied them. Check out our top 3 (all of which happened during Miami Swim Week because…le duh!), then share with us your favorite in the comments below or by sending us a tweet @ThankYouMiami!

1. 90s Rocker Chic at Miami Swim Week: Same Swim.
One of our favorite fashion bloggers, Shea Marie of Peace Love Shea, previewed her debut swimwear line at the Miami Beach Edition’s Sandbox this summer. Inspired by the return of the 90s, we stepped out for the occasion in a Ramones bodycon dress from Boohoo, a denim jacket from American Eagle, and a sparkly choker and super high lug sole platform sandals from Forever 21. The outfit as a whole was a huge win…until we arrived to the Sandbox and struggled to stand in our heels. Note to self: if a Miami invitation says an event will be held in a sandbox, it’s in an actual sandbox.

2. Mermaid Vibes at Miami Swim Week: Lolli Swim.
As true Miami girls, we are obsessed with everything ocean, palm trees, and summer – you know, the mermaid essentials. Based on their 2016 BESTIES collection, which previewed at a summer soirée at the Miami Beach Edition, Lolli gets us. The collection tells a story about besties who drift through long summer days of sunshine making magical memories together. Okay, so we haven’t worn any of the pieces from this collection yet but we are OBSESSED with this palm tree one-piece and bet you’ll be seeing us in it soon. What better way to keep the summer alive in the coming months?

3. Old Florida Flare at Miami Swim Week: Akai, Alexibella, and Siempre Golden Brunch.
This trip down standout summer style memory lane would not be complete without a “So Miami” look, the best of which we sported to brunch with our friends of Akai, Alexibella, and Siempre Golden at Seagrape in the Thompson Miami. Inpsired by Seagrape’s old Florida vibes, we donned Free People’s 100 degree dress (A/K/A the dress of the summer), a fedora from Forever 21 (similar here), and Aldo Gimello sneakers. It was one of the best outfits we put together and fit the setting seamlessly.

The decade from the mid-1970’s to the mid-1980’s was a turbulent time for Miami Beach. Its best years as a glamorous vacation destination and Hollywood hot spot were behind it. The sun-and-fun formula that had delivered so much since the end of World War II had grown stale as new competitors like Disney World and the Caribbean drew tourists that had once flocked to the Beach. The city also faced overlapping demographic crises with a rapidly aging population in South Beach battered by inflation and an unexpected influx of poor immigrants during the Mariel boatlift.

In the midst of this turmoil, an alternative approach to development emerged in the most unlikely of places: South Beach, the center of the crisis. Historic preservation of Art Deco architecture offered an unexpected new vision to compete with the fading formulas of the past. It was during this tumultuous period that a battle for the city’s identity commenced, pitting big developers against scrappy preservationists, generating controversial images in television and film, and setting the stage for the remaking of Miami Beach.

Exhibit: Flashback Fashions from the 1970’s to Today

The Art Deco Museum’s exhibit “Flashback Fashions from the 1970s to Today” invites you to travel back in time to revisit fashion fads and styles of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and through the present day. Popular trends of the past and present are showcased featuring mannequins dressed in vintage apparel, fashion advertisements, pages from magazines such as LIFE and Vogue, and pop culture references. The exhibit also highlights two important Miami Beach contributors to the fashion world – Gianni Versace and NBC’s television show Miami Vice.

History can be chronicled in many different ways – through wars, through art, through film, through political leaders and conflicts, but also through fashion. An art form in and of itself, fashion is sometimes forgotten as a product of history itself. Fashion is very much influenced by the conditions of the times, and popular styles are constantly changing, or making comebacks. Looking forward to the future, it will be interesting to see where history will take fashion next.

Finalist on NBC’s “The Voice,” Karina Iglesias brings her powerful vocals to Arts Garage Sept. 26. She will be accompanied by her “Nu-Thang,” featuring Brian Robertson, piano, James McCoy, bass, and Brian Lange, drums. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. Karina’s classically-trained voice unveils the nuances of her lyrics and adds layers of meaning and emotion that are more commonly found in operatic vocal performances. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias has showcased her strong elements of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

“I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly…, the light fixtures were just gonna explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”
(Adam Levine)

Recognized for being the leading provider of cultural arts support programs in Broward County, ArtServe Fort Lauderdale presents a showcase of emerging to mid-career member artists. Grace Art Center and Sugarcane Media present fine artists from the African diaspora and residents of Broward County; the exhibit also features a separate group of professional artisans who create ‘reclaimed art.’ The reclaimed movement is a focus on repurposed materials and in this case, a new locally made line of home décor.
Show-goers can meet the artists and see their work displayed in curated art spaces grouped together to make one large exhibition area. This feature connects the art and interior design professionals with the consumer to help them make South Florida fine art a part of their home and office design.

Photographs of the Wynwood Tour of Miami Culinary Tours by Mr Q 305

It is five minutes before noon on a on a hot and humid Saturday and while storm clouds are looming to the west, Gace Della is standing at the entrance of the Wynnwood Walls talking to a tourist-looking gentleman. She is easy to spot, she is dressed all in black and wearing a Miami Culinary Tours sign. I tell her who I am and she tells me to wait by the elephant mural “…we will start exactly at 12:00…almost everyone is here”.

“Everyone” is an eclectic group of South Florida bloggers (from foodies to lifestyle, fashion, beauty and everything in between) gathered by Paola Mendez, creator of the South Florida Bloggers Meetup Group and invited to experience the Wynwwod Tour edition of Miami Culinary Tours.

At 12:00:49 P.M. Grace Della begins the tour. Her passion and depth of knowledge immediately come to the forefront. Her delivery is fast, articulate and enthusiastic. She prepares us for our first stop on the tour: Wynwood Kitchen & Bar.

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar has outdoor seating but it is 92 degrees outside with like 90% humidity and on top of that it looks like a storm is coming. We opt to sit indoors. Wise choice, it is cool and comfortable, they have a large table set up for us and a great IPA beer at each spot waiting to be sampled. They read my mind.

Grace explains about Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar’s Nuevo Cuisine philosophy and goes on to describe what’s in our plate: Chicken Empanada, Cheese Tequeño and Sweet Plantains with Queso Fresco. Very well prepared and exquisitely interpreted Latin street food. An excellent appetizer, it gets me in the right mood. By this time I was ready to keep on eating but there is an art component to the Wynwood Tour and since the menacing storm has not fully materialized we head to the Walls.

I did mention Grace’s knowledge about the art on the Wynwood Walls but it is her passionate delivery that makes it so exciting to hear about the artists and creators behind the art. I must confess that until that moment I had taken the art on the walls for granted. No more.

After a brief visit through the O. Asciano Art Gallery we are in route to our next stop: The R House.

The R House is either a cool restaurant with great art hanging on the walls or an art gallery with a restaurant inside, either way they serve an excellent red wine and Chef Rocco Carulli’s Short Rib Slider and Tuna Tartare are simply off the charts.

The Short Rib slider is braised in a decaffeinated coffee rub, sautéed in a molasses reduction with hot chilli and then put into a brioche bun. If by now you are thinking: “that sounds good”, it is.

The Tuna Tartare is lightly fried in sesame oil with black and white sesame seeds, a sweet chilli glaze and wasabi cream go on top and it all goes atop a fried wonton crisp. Each dish is great by itself but to taste them together is simply sublime. I could stay here but the tour must go on.

Two very long, humid and hot city blocks later we arrive at Pride and Joy, a barbecue joint.

Pulled Pork Texas Toast with Cole Slaw is served on a simple cardboard tray but as simple as it sounds, it is every bit as good as good can get, they have a variety of sauces to enhance the flavor and the pork is moist and soft. If you are on the mood for barbecue, this is the place.

From Pride and Joy we go across the street to SuViche a sushi, ceviche and pisco bar/restaurant.

At SuViche they serve us ceviche (of course), the traditional Peruvian dish. Each dish at SuViche is prepared individually so some patience is required but the freshness and awesome taste is evident on the plate. If you haven’t had ceviche before this is a good place to try it.

Next stop is Made in Italy Gourmet, a combination restaurant, deli and market. It boasts a spacious locale with high ceilings and very interesting décor. Whether by coincidence or design (probably the latter) they serve prosecco and Pecorino al Tartufo which is an Italian, raw, sheep’s milk cheese encrusted with small specks of white and black truffles. It is awesome and it gets us in the right mood for our last stop.

Ah yes!…dessert!… Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop & Café, almost across the street from Made in Italy Gourmet specializes in key lime pie and that is exactly what we get to sample. I can taste each ingredient: the limes, the condensed milk and the graham cracker crust as well as the congruence of all these ingredients, which makes this uniquely Florida dessert such a perennial favorite. You want to stop here.

I would advise to take the Wynwood Tour during the cooler months of November through April. If you consider yourself a foodie, the Wynwood Tour is a must but even if you don’t, it is definitely worth it.

Dwntwn Arts Fair Sponsor Thank You to MiamiMade Concert Series

Life Is Art, on behalf of all our partners, participants and the community, would like to thank MiamiMade Concert Series for supporting the Dwntwn Arts Fair by becoming a Community Sponsor!

And now, a message from our sponsor:
MIAMIMADELOGO-01Today might be #TBT, but here at Trinity Cathedral, we are looking ahead for an awesome day tomorrow! Thanks to a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight foundation, the cathedral in the Performing Arts / Omni District is launching a brand new monthly concert series designed to help bring our community together.

MiamiMade Concert Series is focused on highlighting the tremendous talent contained within our city borders. By opening our doors to more than just classical music, we are able to utilize our space in a different way at a time when many concert venues are closing. By providing this space and keeping our ticket costs very low, we are hoping to engage as many members of our diverse population to hear music outside of their regular listening habits.

As we launch this Friday, September 18th, we are turning our focus to the Best of New and Old Miami and featuring some incredibly talented musicians. Every subsequent month will feature a different genre to represent the activities and events in our city.

We are so excited to launch this series and do our part to open our doors and promote our own from this wonderful city. Hope to see you there! Check out more information at www.MiamiMadeCS.com

On Saturday October 10th, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida opens its season with an exciting contemporary program featuring a new work for the company: “Tarde en la Siesta” by Cuban choreographer Alberto Méndez, and music by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. It will be Mendez himself who will stage this piece.

This will also be the debut of Miami’s prima ballerina Mary Carmen Catoya as principal dancer of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. The South Florida audience will enjoy the virtuosity of Catoya in the Grand Pas of “Don Quixote” and the Grand Pas of “Laurencia”, a piece from the classical repertoire rarely seen in the United States, by Vakhtang Chabukiani to music by Alexander Crain, based on Lope de Vega’s Fuente Ovejuna. Also choreographer Alberto Mendez is staging a Pas de Trois for Catoya, Ramil Bagmanov and Alexei Minkin: His formerly piece Suite Generis revised and renamed by himself as Eros’ Game, where two men and a woman show a more contemporary phase of Mr. Mendez and will leave audiences breathless!

To complement this program with Latin flavor, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will perform “Fuga con Pajarillo,” the orchestral version of Venezuelan composer, Aldemaro Romero’s fugue, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev. In this work the typical steps of Joropo (a folk dance) are recreated in pointe shoes, showing the technicality of the solo dancers. The costumes are a creation by designer Jorge Gallardo who, inspired in bougainvillea flower, dresses the ballerinas, while the soloist wears traditional Venezuelan Liqui-liqui. Following, Suite of Waltzes also choreographed by Vladimir Issaev with Music of Venezuelan pianist and composer, Teresa Carreno.

Event features live music and painting, spoken word, an art exhibition, guest speakers and vendors, with all proceeds to be donated to Love the Everglades Movement

The Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert Series is an interactive gathering to share and voice concerns about our ecosystem. This is not a simple show – we are part of a movement that supports protecting our natural resources and human rights! We are working to strengthen our grassroots network and engage members of our community as we work to stop overdevelopment and political corruption! The exploitation of the Everglades effects us all and we need to recognize the damage of oil drilling, fracking and Turkey Point as major issues. We are advocating for more solar usage – this makes sense in the Sunshine State!

At the same time this event will be very entertaining, positive and fun! We can talk about serious issues with informative speakers while enjoying music, spoken word, dance, live art and good people. This is an all ages event because we want to reach out to young people and families. We strive to inspire involvement and participation. Together we make things happen, so join the fun and spread the word!

White Wedding – An Interactive Theatrical Fashion & Dinner Show. Concept inspired by Billy Idol’s song. Held at the breathtakingly beautiful 5th floor pool deck of The Atlantic Hotel, the venue will be decorated elaborately just like a wedding banquet.

Our wedding guests will walk fashionably along the red carpet to find themselves immersed and mesmerized by the tunes of the all too familiar Rock N Roll classics, performed live by our Electric Violinist.

As dinner is served, watch our beautiful models strut the runway as they flaunt the most gorgeous wedding gowns designed by Judith Barnes.

Watch intently, as they fate of the groom lays in the hands of our wedding guests, who will vote for the ‘Best Wedding Dress’ of the evening. The model wearing the dress with most votes will be the lucky one to walk down the isles with the groom, and be serenaded by our Electric Violinist rocking out the finale tune “White Wedding.”

Plenty surprises await throughout the evening. One lucky Wedding Guest will win the grand prize worth $600 in value. Everyone else can enjoy the wedding cake as the ‘brides’ toss the bridal bouquets – Catch it if you can!

Expect a scrumptious wedding feast, fabulous performance by our Electric Violinist, a rockin’ great time over classic hit songs, beautifully enchanting bridal fashion show, live votes, prizes, delectable wedding cake, many surprises and an UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE.

Enjoy.
