The curtains will sweep open for the first time on Friday, October 2nd – Saturday, October 3rd, serving as a window to the lost era of vibrant shows, boozy cocktails and live music. It’s as if the culture has flowed through the island streams to Miami, now complete with an elegant gathering place that represents an integral part of the lively Caribbean culture.

In honor of Opening Weekend, El Tucán will forgo traditions and open it’s doors at 8:00 pm free of charge so revelers may be transported to the bygone era of glitz and glamour. Located in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami, the venue, designed by renowned New York interior designer Robert McKinley, will feature a range of musical styles from Afro-Latin to Parisian pop, bringing international bands, as well as renowned and emerging DJs from around the world center stage in stunning costume designs by the famed stylist Danny Santiago 

In addition to an eclectic musical lineup, El Tucán will house a resident 12-piece Latin orchestra, carefully curated by Grammy award-winning pianist, composer and producer Marlow Rosado, that is reminiscent of the big bands from the jazz eras of the 40s and 50s. Food and drink will also be a mainstay at El Tucán, featuring  libations by Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi of Bar Lab and Caribbean and South American fare that will include hints of Amazonian ingredients created by Chef Jean Paul Lourdes. The intimate, theater-style venue will also be open late night so partygoers can continue fêting after-hours.

On Saturday October 10th, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida opens its season with an exciting contemporary program featuring a new work for the company: “Tarde en la Siesta” by Cuban choreographer Alberto Méndez, and music by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. It will be Mendez himself who will stage this piece.

This will also be the debut of Miami’s prima ballerina Mary Carmen Catoya as principal dancer of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. The South Florida audience will enjoy the virtuosity of Catoya in the Grand Pas of “Don Quixote” and the Grand Pas of “Laurencia”, a piece from the classical repertoire rarely seen in the United States, by Vakhtang Chabukiani to music by Alexander Crain, based on Lope de Vega’s Fuente Ovejuna. Also choreographer Alberto Mendez is staging a Pas de Trois for Catoya, Ramil Bagmanov and Alexei Minkin: His formerly piece Suite Generis revised and renamed by himself as Eros’ Game, where two men and a woman show a more contemporary phase of Mr. Mendez and will leave audiences breathless!

To complement this program with Latin flavor, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will perform “Fuga con Pajarillo,” the orchestral version of Venezuelan composer, Aldemaro Romero’s fugue, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev. In this work the typical steps of Joropo (a folk dance) are recreated in pointe shoes, showing the technicality of the solo dancers. The costumes are a creation by designer Jorge Gallardo who, inspired in bougainvillea flower, dresses the ballerinas, while the soloist wears traditional Venezuelan Liqui-liqui. Following, Suite of Waltzes also choreographed by Vladimir Issaev with Music of Venezuelan pianist and composer, Teresa Carreno.

In the exhibit, TOTEMS seven artists interpret their perceptions of what is idolized and worshipped today from the saintly to the irreverent. Borrowing elements from science and technology to politics and religion, the real and the imaginary often colliding to inspire new mythologies realized in contemporary iconography and materials.

The idea is to explore the versatility of the medium.

South Florida will celebrate seafood, waterfront living and the start of the stone crab season at The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival. For the third year in a row, event organizers will bring together an array of seafood vendors offering bushels of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, stone crab, fish and clams prepared in a variety of ways.

The ever-popular Casablanca Fish Market will once again overflow with fish from around the world that folks can select, purchase and take home after they’ve had their fill at the festival. The Milam’s Kitchen Lab will feature cooking demos by popular South Florida restaurants.

Families are encouraged to come with their children, who will enjoy playing in the inflatable pirate village found in the Family Fun Zone. This two-hour walking tour highlights several of downtown Miami’s best historic buildings, most of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours begin with a brief introductory presentation at MCAD, itself located in the 1912 Old Post Office Building at the center of the City of Miami’s Historic District and covers a three-block area in the core of the Central Business District. Whether you are an architect or just love architecture, this tour is for you!

Tours depart from MCAD rain or shine. All are $20 or $15 for seniors and students. Each adult ticket admits one child under the age of 8 for free. Advance reservations online are required (up to 60 minutes before tour time). Tours are held on alternate Saturdays and begin promptly at 10:00 AM. All sales end at 9:30 AM. On September 12th and 13th, 2015 Life Is Art in partnership with Buskerfest, YO Miami, Kondoit, Indiegals, Celebrate Diversity Miami, Eat Your Poem, and Elwoods GastroPub brought an arts street party to downtown Miami, the DWNTWN Arts Fair, Part of DWNTWN ART DAYS, Located along NE 3rd Avenue between NE 1st and 2nd Street, this free, family friendly show, the DWNTWN Arts Fair was a family-friendly street fest filled with art, music, crafts, and performance with the goal to foster the growth of all the different artistic elements that make up our city’s culture.

Concrete Beach Brewery will celebrate its official grand opening with its first annual
Blocktoberfest – think Oktoberfest with a Miami twist. The party will kick off at Concrete Beach Brewery’s Social Hall with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2PM. The all-day celebration at the Social Hall, which coincides with the first day of Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, will include Oktoberfest-inspired games such as inflatable pretzel toss, corn hole and yodeling contests, as well as German-style food. The event also marks the Social Hall debut of Floridafest, Concrete Beach’s new Oktoberfest-style

Sirens of Animation Costume Competition: A special costume contest showcasing our favorite good and bad girls of animation and anime. A special panel consisting of some industry guests and professional costumers will judge this contest. This is a runway style contest with no pre-judging. Costumes may be of any female character that appears in anime, cartoons or video games. Costumes may be handmade or store bought. Animate! Miami Costume Competition: A competitive costuming event with over $2,000 in cash and prizes at stake with $1,000 cash for Best in Show. The contest is open to all skill levels to ensure both novice and experienced costumers have a chance at winning an award. Click here for more information.

Under The Bridge Downtown is McCormick Place’s 4th Annual DWNTWN Art Days Celebration. The block party at McCormick Place is Downtown’s biggest Art Days event, typically attracting between 1000-1500 of Miami’s art lovers. We open the gallery, the studios and activate the parking lot in front of the building with music, lights, food trucks and more.

This year, we are debuting a brand new exterior and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Maestro Rafael Consuegra by unveiling a permanent sculpture garden featuring his latest creations. There will be several special performances including a dramatic opera by The Opera Atelier, poetry by The Biscayne Poet and musical selections from The Motivational Edge.

Under The Bridge Downtown is also going to be the official Car2Go hub. All night, Car2Go will be posted at McCormick Place, giving away major discounts and providing transportation to all of the Art Days Venues.

There will be food by Latin Burger and Sugar Yummy Mama, drinks by Gravity Brewlab and Potions in Motion, and music by DJ John Productions.

The title of the exhibition, Intersections (after Lautréamont) refers to the notion of beauty and how, during each era, art is responsible for reformulating, subverting, and/or proposing alternative ways of understanding beauty. There is no single criterion in the exhibition, opening spaces for tense intersections, armed with both correspondence and friction. Placing the questions raised by the works of this year’s winners through the prism of this new juncture in the city that hosts them, could produce moments of estrangement, disturbing crossroads, poetic collisions. As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, the Peace Corps sends Americans abroad to tackle the most pressing needs of people around the world. Peace Corps Volunteers work at the grassroots level toward sustainable change that lives on long after their service—at the same time becoming global citizens and serving their country.

This and other “Conversations with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers” is a part of the Peace Corps Prep at FIU. This program is managed by FIU’s Office of Global Learning Initiatives, through a formal partnership with the Peace Corps national office. Students will gain skills and experiences that make them competitive applicants for the Peace Corps and other international development positions. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be formally recognized by FIU and the Peace Corps.

“Beautiful Decay” is an architectural exploration into the viability of current methods of habitation. Both real and speculative, the selected projects explore sceneries and scenarios that tackle the issues facing our ever-changing landscape. Featuring local and national architects and designers, the exhibition is curated by Germane Barnes, OLCDC Designer-in-Residence and Lecturer at the University of Miami School of Architecture.

The exhibition will run from September 18 to October 18, 2015.

“Beautiful Decay was inspired by the disillusionment one often experiences with ‪‎architecture‬. Whether professionally or in ‪‎academia‬, one often reaches a critical juncture when they attempt to find their place in the field. Architecture is routinely thought of as limitless and impactful and iconic and autonomous. A lucky few are able to realize those thoughts, the vast majority are not. Miami, a relatively young city, is currently facing that moment. While contemporary projects are beginning to appear across the city, Miami’s rich history is collateral damage.

The goal of this exhibition is to bring attention to issues surrounding but not limited to South Florida. Sea level rise and flooding are no longer speculative topics, but real phenomenon that one physically and visually experiences during the summer months. Architecture in the tropical world is filled with endless, speculative possibilities that need to be explored.

While Beautiful Decay is an attempt to give a ‪Voice to the voiceless, to express the work of locations that are often forgotten or ignored, it is not limited to Miami. ‪Proposals will display instances of global decadence and work that provoke insightful discussion on the world that we inhabit, both positively and negatively.”

As summer wraps up, the days of 24-hour bare feet are also coming to an end and the local fashion spotlight has turned to shoes. It all started last month when Teen Vogue‘s Fashion and Accessories director, Marina Larroudé, joined Chelsea Paris footwear designer and founder, Theresa Ebagua, in hosting Fashion for Breakfast at Cecconi’s Miami Beach (see photos below). Their discussion, which was moderated by Miami’s own Jason Salstein, Head Buyer for Capretto Shoes in South Miami, centered around Fall shoe trends including the two styles from the Chelsea Paris Fall 2015 collection exclusive to Capretto which were unveiled during an in-store event the following day.

“Capretto is unlike any boutique in the country, if not the world,” says Jason. “As an accessory store, we have the ability to curate collections and custom shoes, be it a color, fabric, or heel height, differentiating ourselves from any other boutique.”

This month, Jason continues his mission of bringing A-list designers to Miami and introducing them to the local market. On the agenda? Luxury shoe designer and owner of his eponymous label, Jerome Rousseau. Jerome will be at Capretto on Tuesday, September 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. previewing pieces from his Pre-Fall 2015 collection and signing any pairs purchased during the in-store event. Introducing Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In’s “Blue Starlite By The Bay” at Kennedy Park in the Coconut Grove

This September, Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In is setting up its big screen at a new venue, and one with plenty of outdoor intrigue. Situated in the Coconut Grove area, the drive-in’s “Blue Starlite By The Bay” welcomes movie fans to enjoy films on Bayshore Drive in between Miami’s striking Kennedy and Peacock Parks, and for the very first time on the weekends. Blue’s new home is the perfect place for patrons to relax and get their outdoor film fix on while breathing in fresh, waterfront air and reveling in the natural beauty of the surrounding parks.

“Blue Starlite By The Bay” is a collaboration made possible by The City of Miami Parks and Recreation with the help of the Commissioner of Miami, Marc Sarnoff. Blue’s new entertainment escape sits just a few blocks down from Scotty’s Landing and Monty’s Raw Bar and Restaurant—two of Miami’s most well known places for drinks and eats on the water. The car park at this location can host up to 30 vehicles a night, featuring a grassy area near the front of the screen for bikers and walk-in guests. Patrons who wish to secure their space early can do so and enjoy an outing in the park, time on the playground or a walk along the bay before settling into their cars for an evening of film screening fun.

Throughout the first month of fall, Blue Starlite will screen a mix of romance and adventure-packed family films—such as Princess Bride, The Goonies, Grease (the sing along), Alice In Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and Jaws. In the spirit of Blue Starlite’s cinematic experimentation, the Blue will offer alternative rock’n roll listening options for The Wizard of Oz and Alice In Wonderland with its popular late night Psychedelic Cinema Series. The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) is proud to announce LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING, a collaborative project between MCAD and EXILE Books, a Miami-based, pop-up artist’s book store. LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING is a groundbreaking program that seeks to bridge the understanding between downtown Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, specifically addressing visual impairments. Opening September 3, 2015, the exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.

LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING will transform ten Downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau via four main components:

The MCAD gallery will feature tactile relief works of selected downtown buildings with accompanying wall texts provided in braille.

The public, front steps of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) will house the project’s central component: an outdoor audio piece that will share engaging stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD’s home) as well as surrounding downtown buildings. The audio installation will be accompanied by a large, vinyl, floor applique inviting passersby to “LISTEN” to the building.

To further enhance the exhibit, students from FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Miami Beach Urban Studios will create models of selected downtown buildings using a 3-D printing process. These renderings will be displayed in covered boxes obscuring their visual properties so that audiences must feel the building to experience the architecture.

To commemorate the exhibition, EXILE Books will also produce an artist’s book in which the architectural narratives from the outdoor audio piece will be transcribed in braille. There will be no photographs or printed text in the publication, only tactile reliefs of each building, effectively compelling the viewer to experience Miami through new and distinct paradigms.

The exhibition is believed to be the first architectural exhibit designed to address accessibility for persons with visual impairments. MCAD and EXILE Books will co-host a slate of weekly events during the six-week exhibition to engage the public on issues of art, architecture, and accessibility. The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2015 to October 17, 2015.

The exhibition, mobility tours, and braille artist book are made possible with the support of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Support for EXILE Books is made possible through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Printing and consulting for the project generously provided by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Tactile illustrations offered by John De Salvo and Judith McBrien as featured in the Norton’s Pocket Guide to Miami Architecture. Programming partners include Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ability Explosion, Florida International University’s College for Architecture + the Arts, and IlluminArts. The Children’s Trust 2015 Family Expo, will host its ninth annual, FREE, all-day festival to provide parents with direct access to educational, health and social services in a fun and festive experience. As the largest free event of its kind in our community, the Expo boasts record crowds exceeding 20,000 and more than 200 participants. An assortment of exhibitors are located in two indoor exhibit halls showcasing information about education, after-school enrichment activities, low-cost health insurance, nutrition, safety, services for children with special needs, Pre-K registration and much more. As part of the fun, each hall will host two stages packed with entertainment and theatrical presentations of beloved children’s stories. Children can also enjoy rock climbing, elaborate bounce houses, face painting, balloon sculptures, stilt walkers, magicians and favorite storybook and television characters such as Nickelodeon’s Pablo and Uniqua, and Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat, among many others. Free backpacks and composition notebooks will be distributed to the first 1,000 school-age children.

For the fith year in a row, Fusion Gitana is proud to be performing at the Coral Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival. This is one of our favorite events of the year. Not only will our Gitanas be performing but we will have for the first time our KIDS performing!

The Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival, Inc. is a Florida charitable, non-profit organization. Our organization is responsible for the annual Coral Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival in “The City Beautiful” of Coral Gables. There are many interpretations in the the Oriental dance and the veil is an element that is essential to this form of dance. The use of the veil symbolizes the sensuality and femininity of the dancer.

In this workshop, you will learn different ways of using double veils so that you can incorporate them into your choreographies. You’ll learn technique along with traveling steps and a fun and dynamic choreography.

Don’t miss the chance to study with Romina Musach​ in this very special workshop.

About Romina:
Romina Musach is a performer, Instructor, choreographer and actress. Born in Argentina. She has been studying dance since she was a child. She worked part-time as a dance teacher while she studied her bachelors of choreographic composition at UNA University (Universidad Nacional del Arte). She also studied Theater Dance at “Fundacion Julio Bocca”.

Romina became a full-time dancer and teacher before she was 20 years old. She is the owner of her dance studio “Estudio de Danzas Romina Musach” in Argentina.

Romina studied oriental dance with different teachers. She did many shows in Argentina with different dance companies. Her most important teachers of Bellydance are: Amir Thaleb​, La Beduina Sarat and Virginia​. She also studies Flamenco Fusion with ZiZi Zabaneh​ and is one of Fusion Gitana’s principal dancers.
