PARTNER INFORMATION

Life Is Art
Life Is Art is presenting a number of excellent local artists showcasing a wide variety of visual art styles.

Yo Miami & Kondoit
A hub for local artists, Yo Miami has grown since 2011 into an ecosystem where creatives can get access to resources & contacts to help them reach the next level of success in their careers. By working with businesses, nonprofi t & community organizations we are able to foster a network which enables us to create opportunities throughout the year for artists to demonstrate their talents in ways that add value to our neighborhoods. With several monthly events at various venues around Wynwood, we continually o ffer a platform where emerging artists can reach a wider audience. At the same time, we show business owners the benefits associated with incorporating arts programming into their operations, & help foster the growth of our local communities through this synergy. For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Buskerfest
We strive for a connected, thriving urban core where the streets of Miami are active and enlivened with local performers, enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life. We envision a joyous place that is reflective of the tropical urban landscape and attractive to locals and visitors alike.

Celebrate Diversity Miami
Celebrate Diversity Miami’s 2015 Photo‐voice Exhibit focuses on celebrating the diversity of our greater Miami community with a unique array of large-scale photographs. It features 60 beautiful, vibrant images submitted by residents, schools, and organizations from across Miami-Dade County. Join us in celebrating our incredible culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Give a #DiversityMiami shout-out with a picture or postcard, and share what makes the place you call home awesome!

FoodSpark
By way of delicious food and great conversation, FoodSpark Miami will provide a fun, interactive gathering space for diverse groups of greater Miami residents to connect with one another, discuss key social issues with fellow citizens, and figure out how we can collaborate to improve the quality of life in our local neighborhoods. FoodSpark Miami is made possible in part by the 8-80 Cities Emerging City Champions 2015 Fellowship, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

New Community Theater Opens in South Miami

Improv South Miami (ISM), a new theater located in South Miami that welcomes directors, actors, improvisers and local artists, will be hosting its grand opening on Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 8-10 p.m.

“We are so excited to be opening Improv South Miami, a non-profit organization focused on the local improv, arts and theater community. We want this theater space to be accessible for both established and up-and-coming theater and arts groups in South Florida,” said ISM founder Katrina Morris.

At ISM’s grand opening, house team Cage Free Humans, of which Morris is a member, will be headlining the entirely improvised comedy performance. Local improv teams Comedy School Dropouts and Miamah Comedy’s Battlecat will be opening for the show.

ISM was formed by Morris to provide low-cost rehearsal space and a free performance venue, with a percentage of funds raised going back to the performing artists. “The South Florida improv community is growing rapidly, with workshops and shows happening year-round. As the community grows, affordable rehearsal and performance space for independent teams are difficult to find,” she said.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with “LECUONA, HIS MUSIC, HIS LEGACY”

Concert will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month and LatinSymphony Concert Series
at Miramar Cultural Center

The Miramar Cultural Center will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a tribute to Latin and Classical music presented by MAR Communications & Services, Inc. Famed pianist, Thomas Tirino will interpret the music of Ernesto Lecuona in “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy.” The event, part of the LatinSymphony concert series, will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015, 7 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center.

“We created the LatinSymphony series to offer a new appreciation of the richest and most influential Latin music,” says Maria Arreaza, President of MAR Communications & Services Inc. “By showcasing the fusion of Latin and Classical music, the next generation will be able to gain a greater understanding of our culture and heritage, and their contribution to the world of music.”

Thomas Tirino is recognized worldwide for his skillful interpretation of the music of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. Tirino is the driving force behind the revival of many of Lecuona’s masterfully crafted compositions such as “Damisela Encantadora,” “María La O,” “Malagueña,” “Rapsodia Negra,” “Estás En Mi Corazón” and many more. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Tirino has performed concerts and given master-classes and lectures on Lecuona’s music all over the world, and has recorded several albums with the music of Lecuona.

Born in Guanabacoa, Cuba, Lecuona composed over six hundred pieces, mostly in the Cuban vein. His talent for composition influenced the Latin American world by raising Cuban music to classical status. At “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy,” audiences will be transported on a memorable musical journey filled with nostalgia for Cuba’s glory days.

There is no one more appropriate to serve as master of ceremony than Nestor Rodriguez. Born in a Cuba to a musical family, Rodriguez was president of Classical South Florida. He has spent his career dedicated to furthering the arts by devoting his time and resources to non-profit organizations such as the Miami City Ballet, Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chopin Foundation. As master of ceremony he will provide the audience with a special treat before the show conducting a special interactive Q&A with Tirino.

Tickets to “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy” are currently on sale and range from $55 – $90. Visit miramarculturalcenter.org to purchase tickets in advance or click here. Miramar Cultural Center box office contact number: 954-602-4500.

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.
What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.
Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

Getting Here:
You can find street parking around the building or park at the 700 Biscayne lot right $5 for across from the American Airline Arena.
Traveling by MetroRail/MetroMover? Disembark at Park West Station right behind our building.
To access the building walk in thru the residential entrance of the MarinaBlue Building (888 Biscayne Blvd). Check in with concierge and make sure they direct you to the commercial/office door where KeyWorking is located on the 5th floor.

When artists talk about their “work”, they can be talking about two different things. There’s the artwork, the finished product, framed and hung on a gallery wall. Then there’s the day to day stuff of creating the artwork itself such as searching for inspiration leading to an idea, deciding how to express it, applying paint to canvas, etc. By letting go of our egos and sharing the process, we allow others to have ongoing connections with us and our work.

With all the amazing restaurants in Miami it is nice to find an exquisite foodie event that is unique. Get ready for this marvelous experience of theater, Italian food and some of the best wine in the world! Tickets are limited and will sell out, so do not wait too long to jump onboard. Toscana Divino, the premiere modern Italian restaurant and wine bar located in the heart of Mary Brickell Village, is proud to announce a unique one-of-a-kind wine dinner in celebration of ancient Florentine winemaker Antinori’s 630th Birthday! Join us in rediscovering how the Florence Renaissance influenced and shaped the world’s modern cuisine through a wine dinner theatre performance featuring Catherine de Medici!

Since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori entered as a member of the “Arte Fiorentina”, the Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence, the Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine – that’s over six centuries! Thorough twenty-six generations, the family has always directly managed the Marchesi Antinori, maintaining, unaltered, a fundamental respect for tradition and for the territory in which they have operated.

Catherine de Medici will bring the Antinori Wine Dinner to life as she interacts with guests and tells her stories of how she brought modern cuisine to the world. She’s said to have taught the French how to eat with a fork, and introduced foods and dishes such as artichokes, cakes, cream puffs, custards, ices, parsley, pasta, puff pastry, quenelles, scallopine, sherbet, and truffles. This performance will be accompanied with Renaissance pieces performed by renowned classical guitarist Paul Martin. Chef Billy Devlin and Andrea Marchesin will create a sophisticated dinner with a modern take on some of the great contributions Caterina de Medici brought to the history of international cuisine. Each course was created to be a perfect complement to Antinori’s famous wines.

The Antinori Wine Dinner will be held on August 26th at 8:00 p.m. and cost $100 plus tax and gratuity. For more information, please call 305-371-2767 or visit http://www.toscanadivino.com

Miami, Florida 33114
Website
Cost: Individual- $1499 ~ Group- $1499

Each day, 164 people lose their lives – many unnecessarily – due to improper care of pressure wounds also known as bedsores, a little-known area of medicine that is growing at an alarming rate with the rapid aging of our society.
Registered and licensed vocational nurses and those in related fields may earn continuing education credit and certification in the area of wound care by enrolling in weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care:

• August 26-28, 2015 – Miami, FL (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 9-11, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 23-25, 2015 – Oakland, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• October 28-30, 2015 – Dallas, TX (Includes Skills Lab)

“The growing problem of pressure wounds is especially challenging for nursing homes that have had to send their residents to specialty clinics and hospitals for treatment,” said Anvar, who also founded the College of Long Term Care. “This is especially costly when you factor in ambulance transportation, lifting and moving patients in delicate health, admittance to the hospital and surgical care. Also, the simple act of transporting patients can lead to the onset of additional pressure wounds. By teaching staff how to prevent such wounds and identify them at the earliest stages, we can reverse these troubling statistics.”
Weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care will reveal these basic facts about caring for wounds:

• Avoid excess baths (should only bathe for 3-5 minutes 2-3 times per week)
• Keep water temperature lukewarm – not hot
• Add bath oil
• Do not use most soap products as they contain detergent (Dove is the exception)
• Do not use washcloths
• Pat dry
• Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing and reapply 4 times each day
• Stay well hydrated
• Avoid caffeine, spices and alcohol

Hialeah Park Casino Celebrates Second Year Anniversary 8/14/15- 8/15/15

Hialeah Park Casino Celebrates Second Year Anniversary
Friday, August 14, 6:30pm – 2:00am
Saturday, August 15, 8:00pm – 10:00om
HCHialeah Park Casino
100 East 32 Street
Hialeah, FL 33010

Hialeah Park Casino, home to “the world’s most beautiful race course,” marks the second year anniversary of its Casino opening with a two-day celebration. The event will take place with a series of concerts. The anniversary comes only months after the announcement that Hialeah Park Casino will undergo a multi-million dollar expansion.

Hialeah Park, established in 1921, was once known as the “THE” park for thoroughbred horseracing. Under the ownership and vision of John J. Brunetti, Sr., the park is once again a shining light in South Florida. Over time, as horse racing began to lose popularity, Brunetti, Sr. felt the park, known for its storied architecture, needed to live on. Today alive and thriving, it features a state of the art casino, which encompasses the spirit of “The Grand Dame”.

Hialeah Park Casino has now become an entertainment complex that features horseracing, gaming, professional boxing, and concerts by some of the world’s most famous Latin American musical acts, including Grammy Award winners Willy Chirino, Marlow Rosado, and Jose Feliciano.

Hialeah Park Casino will celebrate its second anniversary shortly after the announcement that the Casino will undergo a multi-million dollar development, which includes the opening of the new Kings Court VIP Poker Salon, and a state of the art simulcasting facility, as well as renovations to the Hialeah Park Amphitheater. The project will allow for more entertainment and culinary opportunities.

The festivities commence at 6:30PM on Friday, August 14, with University of Miami’s Casino Night, a private event, in the recently renovated Fountain Terrace outdoor venue. From 8:00-10:00PM on Friday night, VIVA will take over the Fountain Terrace to perform the music of The Beatles, The Four Seasons, and The Beach Boys, in an event that is open to the public. Late night entertainment will be indoors from 10:00PM until 2:00AM. Local favorite DJ El Russo will be joined by special guest Adrian Mesa in the Flamingo Lounge located conveniently inside the Casino. One day later, on Saturday, August 15, Hialeah Park will proudly present the critically acclaimed Miami band Locos Por Juana on the Fountain Terrace from 8:00-10:00PM.

John J. Brunetti, Sr. stated: “I was first captivated by the spirit of Hialeah Park as a young horseracing fan. I later had the opportunity to purchase the park. The wind of change inspired me to create Hialeah Park Casino, keeping the park alive for future generations. We invite the South Florida public to celebrate our second-year anniversary with us, as we continue to make history as a community.”

Hialeah Park Casino, home to the “world’s most beautiful race course”, proudly showcases the premier entertainment complex in South Florida. Hialeah Park Casino features acclaimed facility housing over 800 slots, 33 poker tables, and a variety of lounges, cafes, and restaurants. For more information on Hialeah Park Casino please visit: www.hialeahpark.com. You can find Hialeah Park on Facebook and Twitter.

Toscana Divino’s Mauro Bortignon Receives Keys To The City

1-Mauro_Mayor

Toscana Divino’s General Manager Mauro Bortignon was honored Friday evening July 24, 2015 in Brickell.  Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado presented Bortignon with a “Key to the City” in a lively celebration attended by friends, patrons, and other distinguished members of the community. The Mayor thanked Mr. Bortignon for his contributions to the culinary ecosystem of the city and for being an important part of the renaissance of Brickell and Downtown.

“I am sincerely honored to receive a Key to the City on behalf of Toscana Divino and the Italian-American community here in Miami,” said Mr. Bortignon, “This is really a recognition to the rich culinary and viticultural contribution that Italian-Americans have made since the mid 1700’s when the first Italian vintners arrived in Florida. The opportunity to promote the unique culinary traditions of Italy in the midst of the spectacular transformation of Miami’s Brickell-Downtown area is both humbling and exciting for me, my partners Stefano and Tommaso, and the entire Toscana Divino team,” continued Mr. Bortignon.

Demonstratively touched, Mr. Bortignon highlighted that he was specially moved by the attendance to the event of our longtime patrons and friends Chelin and Alfredo Duran. “Their presence is not only a celebration of our friendship but it is also symbolic of the strong community bond Toscana Divino has forged since opening its doors in 2012,” he added.

Toscana Divino was built in partnership with the Consortium of Italian Business, Wine and Fashion in Florence, Italy, with the intention of promoting Tuscan cuisine and products in Miami. The restaurant is owned and managed by native Italians and restaurant industry veterans Stefano Cavinato, Tommaso Morelato, and Mr. Bortignon. When asked to comment on what it meant for a member of the Toscana Divino team to receive a Key to the City, Mr. Cavinato said: “Mauro really embodies the passion of Italian cuisine and culture and he brings it alive in the restaurant. The city’s acknowledgment is really an honor to all of us.”

In the same spirit, his partner, Mr. Morelato underscored that Mr. Bortignon was the perfect cultural ambassador for everything Italian. “Before joining our team,” he said, “Mauro spent several years in New York working for famous Italian chef Mario Batali. Here in Miami, he spent 6 years working for the iconic and world-renown Casa Tua. We are really proud to have him as part of our team.”

When describing the Toscana Divino experience, Mr. Bortignon states that: “We want our patrons to feel they are entering a world that is thoroughly Tuscan, but also thoroughly contemporary. We are creating a link between the Tuscan region and the Miami area, thereby building a bridge between our two cultures.”

About Toscana Divino

Since opening its doors in 2012, Toscana Divino, recently voted the best restaurant in Brickell by the Miami New Times, is known for presenting both the most contemporary and traditional Tuscan and Italian cuisine, including the world-famous Fiorentina steak. Toscana Divino’s menu, draws its inspiration from classic dishes found throughout Tuscany featuring pastas made fresh in house, fresh seasonal ingredients from local markets or directly imported from Italy.  Toscana Divino continues to inspire unprecedented praise and rave reviews from such publications as the Miami Herald, Thrillist, Zagat, Miami. Toscana Divino is located 900 S. Miami Ave, Miami, FL in Mary Brickell Village.   For additional information, visit www.toscanadivino.com.

Chalk-tacular: 3-Acre Art Project to Reclaim Dan Paul Park 8/8/15

Chalk-tacular: 3-Acre Art Project to Reclaim Dan Paul Park
August 8, 1-4PM
Parcel B (the waterfront property due east of AA Arena)
Downtown Miami, FL
Facebook

If you draw it, it will come. On August 8th, hundreds of students, families and local artists are teaming up with Engage Miami and a growing coalition of Miami-based community groups to send a very big message to Miami Dade County commissioners and the Heat. This coalition of community groups, students, and artists will work together to create a massive 3-acre chalk drawing that will cover the entire sheet of asphalt currently sitting on top of the infamous Parcel B site (the waterfront property due east of the American Airlines Arena). They want the County and the Heat to deliver the “world-class waterfront park” that was a centerpiece of the advertising campaign the Heat used to persuade Miami-Dade county voters to pass the referendum in favor of building the AA Arena back in 1996.

Co-hosts for this event include Engage Miami and Chalk Project, Catalyst Miami, Center for Social Change, Celebrate Diversity Miami, Colony1, Dark Matter Collective, Dream Defenders, Emerge Miami, Guitars Over Guns, Guns Down Bikes Up, Instagramers Miami, Miami City Chess Club, Miami Parks Foundation, New Leaders Council Miami, The New Florida Majority, The New Tropic, Roots Collective, SMIA Group / Sustainable Miami, Urban Environment League, Urban Paradise Guild UPG and the list is growing.

“We hope this day of fun-filled community engagement will send a strong message to Miami-Dade County commissioners and to the Heat that Miami residents won’t back down until we get what we’ve been promised,”says Maydee Martinez (19), an Engage Miami board member and current MDC student.
Miami residents’ promised park (including a mini-soccer field) remains just that, a promise. Residents have been waiting 20 years.

“When you don’t get what you want, you gotta do it yourself. And when you do it yourself you might as well go big– real big,” says Nando Jaramillo of Colony 1 urban farm in Wynwood.
To drive their message home: They’re striving to win a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of independent chalk drawings done in a single setting. The current record is 308 drawings is held by a group in Toyama, Japan.

In addition to reaching out to other community groups, coalition members will send invitations to all county and city commissioners. But, Justin Wales, an event organizer and leader of Engage Miami, says that just showing up is not enough:
“Let’s be clear. Residents, especially young people, are tired of waiting for our elected officials to act. We are claiming this park for the public, as it was promised to us, and we ask that young people across Miami join us.”

If you’ve ever wondered what Biscayne Boulevard looked like when it was brand new – or what the Miami Beach Kennel Club looked like before it was South Pointe Park, or what Lincoln Road looked like when cars drove on it, Sylvia Gurinsky has a show for you.

Gurinsky, a history consultant, tour guide and freelance writer, has dug through the files at the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College to find film and video clips that recapture vanished South Florida places and spaces.

The result: “Once There Was A Place…,” an informal tour through South Florida’s past presented by Gurinsky. The screening is open to the public and free of charge. Light refreshments will follow.

Among the sights recovered by Gurinsky’s research are the Brickell Mansion, home of William and Mary Brickell, captured in never-before-seen footage photographed shortly before the building was demolished.

Three Miami hotels that defined the Magic City’s boomtown skyline, the Columbus, Everglades and McAllister Hotels, are featured, as are the Diplomat Hotel, a MiMo classic designed by Norman Giller, and Morris Lapidus’ Fontainebleau, shown under construction on the beachfront site of Harvey Firestone’s mansion.

Sport facilities such as Miami’s beloved Orange Bowl and the Miami Beach Kennel Club, neighborhoods from Overtown to Sunny Isles and other sites are also covered in “Once There Was A Place…”

Locust Projects presents the 6th year of LAB (Locust Arts Builders). This year, 20 South Florida high school students were selected from an open call and had the opportunity to create a collaborative exhibition at Locust Projects in Miami’s Design District.

Under the direction of Miami-based contemporary visual artists Monica Lopez de Victoria (of the TM Sisters) and Clifton Childree, students were given the opportunity to create a collaborative exhibition at Locust Projects and manage all aspects of the show’s production during a three-week summer intensive. Students also visited art institutions on guided field trips and interacted with invited members of the local art community at Locust Projects. The LAB program extends Locust Projects’ longstanding commitment to experimentation and innovation in artistic practice to the next generation of South Florida artists. LAB promotes contemporary art and project-based learning as a means to encourage creativity, critical analysis, and problem solving, while also helping participants to develop their communication skills. This unique initiative allows young artists to learn the practical aspects and experience the excitement of creating a public exhibition in collaboration with their peers.

Locust Projects is excited to welcome California-based MFA student Christina Mesiti who has been selected to develop and produce her project Port for the LAB MFA exhibition in the Project Room. Mesiti is studying for her MFA at Claremont Graduate University in California, and received her BFA in Painting from Arizona State University. This is the first year that Locust Projects has held a national open call for the LAB MFA program, and we are thrilled to have received proposals from students attending a broad range of schools across the United States.

ABOUT LOCUST PROJECTS Locust Projects is a not for profit exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Local, national and international artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work. Locust Projects supports the local community through educational initiatives and programming that are free to the public.

LAB is funded by the Alvah H. and Wyline P. Chapman Foundation, The Cowles Charitable Trust, and The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.

Locust Projects’ exhibitions and programming are made possible with the support from: The Alvah H. and Wyline P. Chapman Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; Cowles Charitable Trust; FAENA, The State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; The John S. and James L. Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-And-Function-Withings-Activité-Pop-Fitness-Title

Every time we have to get into a bikini we wish we had a magic button we could press to instantly make us look thinner and more toned, but we all know that’s wishful thinking. Looking fit and feeling good about our bodies is more about regular exercise and good nutrition, less about magic, non-existent solutions. We never thought we’d have a problem maintaining our exercise routine (good nutrition is more of a battle because we love food). From Middle School through college, we were athletes who comfortably did two-a-days in multiple sports and still had the energy to hit the gym. In fact, in High School – before we had any common sense and when it still seemed like an easily attainable goal – we would tell our friends that our goal in life was to become a “hot mom” Ã  la Jessica Alba. Fridge Art Fair –
Fridge Art Fair was born in 2013 on New York’s Lower East Side. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge, “Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014. So far, each Fridge Art Fair has coincided with Frieze New York in May and Art Basel Miami in December.

Fridge Art Fair is the boutique, soft sell, dog-friendly satellite fair dubbed as, “The baby who has refused to obey orders to stand outside the door while the adults confabulate inside,” by Artinfo.

Fridge Art Fair Founder and Artist Eric Ginsburg, known for the uniquely soulful and painterly qualities of his portraits, Eric credits Sol LeWill as a patron and friend who commissioned works, as well as a mentor, and, along with Eric’s “pen pal” William Wegman, as “kind of a hero.”

Ginsburg studied with Maureen Gallace at NYU and received his MFA from Columbia University in 2005. His works are found in public & private collections around the wold including: Herb & Dorothy Vogel (now in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art);Galerie Nieu Schoten (Ten Boom Museum, The Netherlands); the New Britain Museum of American Art; The Cartin Collection; Cindy Sherman; William Wegman; Lisa Spellman; and the Francis J. Greenburger Collection, Paula Cooper and the LeWitt Collection.

Every city has its book written in a million different volumes, each with its own author. New York tells stories of a concrete jungle, crawling with those who strive to one day take a chunk of the apple and feast on it for the rest of eternity. Los Angeles with its tales of lost angels flocking from all over the world is heaven for some, purgatory or even hell for others. But what about Miami? What of its book? Time and time again the city has been glamorized by South Beach and its pretty colors. A city supposedly filled with flamingos and peacocks ignores the pigeons and mocking birds that truly call it home. Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees will give a voice to a group of native sons telling Miami’s story through their own work. Each artist, different from the next, will own a little piece of this epic volume by adding a chapter to the Magic City.
WYN 317 Gallery is pleased to present Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees, a group exhibition curated by Ivan Roque featuring works by Ernesto Maranje, James Livingston, James Brutus, Danny Ferrer and Ivan Roque.

“THE PERFECT LIFE” MFA Exhibition

Living in suburbia, it is difficult to notice the many discrepancies between the romantic appeal of the perfect life, and the reality of living away from the city. The work shown here, is a small set of stories from actual women choosing to live in the suburbs, confronting unexpected issues, and dealing with roles and society’s impositions.
Printmaking allows me to mimic the idealistic communities of the suburbs by giving me the option of creating and playing with repetitive words and images, directly sending multiple messages to the observer. The purpose of these prints is to expose the unspoken issues, airing out skeletons in our closets.
This body of work is intended to open a conversation about changing or sharing roles within our own circles. Wether in suburbia or the city, women need to believe they have the ability to choose their paths and change their roles if need be, thus being able to direct their perfect lives.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

”LeNard Rutledge, born and raised in Miami, where there is only a handful of truly great jazz vocalists, is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. Like Rawls, Rutledge’s classy elegance is often permeated by the raw passion of his church choir work.”

Few things make as much sense as Miami hosting Swim Week. We’ve got beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, an exciting nightlife and, most importantly, incredibly talented people. Our favorite part of locally-hosted international events like Swim Week is seeing the global spotlight shine on our local talent and watching them flourish. This year, we went into the bikini madness with a goal to observe and report on the accomplishments of Miami designers, products, venues, and people. Alas, here we are today sharing five of the week’s best 305-bred moments.

1. Liliana Montoya – Mermaids of Atlantis Runway Show at Funkshion Fashion Week
Liliana Montoya is a Miami Beach-based brand that has captivated aspiring mermaids in the US and beyond. For the brand’s third Miami Swim Week, Liliana stunned the crowd with sexy wrap-around pieces and a killer summer soundtrack that included our “it” summer song: East & Young Remix of Runaway (U&I) by Galantis. The night was made all the sweeter because it was a collaborative effort of multiple Miami girl bosses, including Valérie Engel of South of Fifth’s Roses and Dreams Boutique which carries her brand. If you missed our previous feature on Valérie, check it out here for some serious life inspo then stop by her store to pick up Liliana Montoya’s sultry swim designs.

2. Style Saves Swim at the Miami Beach EDITION and the SLS Hotel
Miami non-profit Style Saves, which fundraises to donate underprivileged kids with clothing, shoes and accessories, was the talk of the town with their 5th Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser at the Miami Beach EDITION. The runway show featured beach must-haves by coveted brands (Kai Lani, Regine Chevallier, and Goêt) and swoon-worthy moments thanks to the world’s cutest puppies. Then, on Sunday, Style Saves hopped over to the SLS Hotel where they hosted pop-ups of local brands and boutiques (iSHINE365, Style Mafia, MVM Boutique) for a “So Miami” shopping experience in the name of charity. Thanks to Style Saves, the weekend was a fruitful one for our small businesses and for the less fortunate children in our community. P.S. If you want to contribute to their more than worthy cause, you can donate at any time.

3. Babalú at Hammock Show
Babalú, local luxury boutique and the brainchild of perfume fanatics Greg Melvin and Paolo Ambu, was also present at Miami Swim Week. We stumbled upon their elegant display outside the W Hotel’s trés chic ballroom and, as soon as we spotted their unmistakeable pink logo, we were super psyched to see what they had in store. You may remember from our feature on their Perfume Genie that the team from Babalú has a flare for the exciting and the exotic and, at Hammock Show, they didn’t disappoint. They used the trade show to debut their new line of artisanal candies which are fittingly inspired by notes from fine fragrances like those sold at their Lincoln Road outpost. The layer of notes in the candies, such as the honey, ginger and oriental spice in the “Spicy” line, make them a unique gift for anyone with a sweet tooth.

4. Escape Miami Style Lounge at Shelborne Wyndham Grand
Escape Miami Lounge, an annual swim-themed ode to Miami by Annie Vazquez (A/K/A The Fashion Poet) and Katya Bravo, returned for its third year bigger and better than ever. The event took over the Shelborne‘s pool and cabanas with pop-ups from well-known brands like Italia Independent (which will be opening their first store in Miami soon) and newly-launched ones like Flair Miami blog’s new line of Miami-inspired t-shirts. We were all about the fruity summer cocktails, the burst of cooling kryogenifex mist, and The Biscayne Poet‘s sweet prose. This really is one of Miami’s best summer parties time and time again.

5. Akai, Alexibella and Siempre Golden Brunch at Seagrape
We ended our Miami quest with brunch (because Miami, bro) at Seagrape where we scarfed down three chocolate croissants in the presence of the two designers of Akai Swimwear and their other media guests. In addition to overloading on carbs, we had the chance to chat with Daniela Longo and Chabeli De Sousa about the story behind their brand, the inspiration for their second collection, and their time at the University of Miami (Go ‘Canes!). We also perused their lookbook and those of Alexibella and Siempre Golden before leaving with a super chic and cheeky Siempre Golden bikini that you’ll get the chance to peep in a future post. Until then, you can find your summer swim in Akai, Alexibella, and Siempre Golden. Trust.

Miami Turns Down Free Art

Miami turns down free art. A city known for art and for culture suffers the absence of a $30 million investment to improve the city’s reputation as a capital for art in the US.

Originally posted in the Miami Herald editorial section. Click here for the original article.

It’s baffling when an opportunity arises for taxpayers to benefit from the generosity of a wealthy investor and art patron – and the city of Miami acts like it doesn’t care.

That appears to be what happened to Miami resident and successful hedge-fund manager Bruce Berkowitz, founder of Fairholme Capital Management.

Mr. Berkowitz wanted to build an Arquitectonica-designed office building, but not just any building — an area-unique, anvil-shaped 10-story headquarters for his business and also his foundation on a lot on 26th Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater. The exterior of the nearly windowless building will be a new type of concrete embedded with glass fiber optics that renders it translucent. At night, the building should glow. Yes, grandiose plans, but all privately funded.

The perk for the public was that it was Mr. Berkowitz’s intention to install in two massive sculptural modern art masterpieces by art stars Richard Serra and James Turrell, which the investment manager purchased and are valued at $30 million, in the lobby. The pieces could only improve Miami’s art cred.

All Mr. Berkowitz needed from the city of Miami was zoning approval. He was willing to bend, and to amend his architectural plans to conform to the Miami 21 zoning code. No problem. But Mr. Berkowitz told the Miami Herald he got the bum’s rush from the city. After months of willingly trying and failing to get a clear-cut response from the city as to whether he could proceed, a frustrated Mr. Berkowitz has pulled the plug on the project. “All work has been suspended,” he told the Editorial Board Thursday.

Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, whose district includes Edgewater, is now taking a personal interest in rescuing the effort. “I don’t want to lose this project,” he said.

Mr. Sarnoff said the project’s cancellation would be a big loss. We agree. To miss out on being the city that displays these art pieces, especially during Art Basel, would be a mistake. Best of all, it would not cost local residents a penny.

“I think things will get back on track,” Mr. Sarnoff told the board. But Mr. Berkowitz vehemently disagrees. “There are no ongoing discussions and the only thing I’ve heard from the city is that I’ve been fined $300,000 for the way we cleared and secured the lot.”

If Miami wants to be a world-class city, it can’t commit a blunder like this. It should try to save this enhancement to the local art scene, not to mention beautification of Biscayne Boulevard.

Can you keep it together and give a presentation worthy of a TED Talk? It’s a wonderful night of absurdity and participatory comedy. No experience required.
