Lique Miami-A Refreshing New Waterfront Dining By Betty Alvarez

Photo 1-001

I arrived to this quaint restaurant in North Miami which I have only heard about, Lique. This waterfront dining spot is owned by restauranteurs Peter Cumplido and Alex Podolhy who are also behind Fort Lauderdale’s Sweet Nectar. This soon-to-be hot spot has Executive Chef Renalto Medeiros at the helm and I was about to embark on a never-before breathtaking dining experience in a chilly night but that did not stop me.

When I entered the restaurant I realized that I have been here before when it was Rouge Waterfront Dining where everything was red. But this time around, the restaurant is transformed into what it seems an enchanted garden with luxurious white decor furniture, greenery all over, the contemporary pieces that was all over. The decor is truly spectacularly very fresh and inviting. We sat down to our table to begin our journey.

Our dining experience was by candlelight. A nice touch for a romantic experience if you are dining with a loved one. In my case, I was dining with one of my best friends so that did not happen. LOL! I ordered a nice Pinot Grigio and she ordered a nice fruity tall glass drink that our waiter recommended. I was jealous as her glass was bigger than mine! When we were hended our menu it was unique as it was a wood platform wit the menu attached and the logo of the restaurant on the back. It was great as everything was on one page.

Appetizers and small plates is what we suggested therefore it did not disappoint. First serving was the Truffle Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio. I wanted something healthy but nice to start therefore the Tuna was a nice healthy alternative. What a delight! The truffle made the Tuna stand out as all my taste buds sky-rockted. It gave it a distinct flavor. Then came the Bone Marrow-a plate of 4 big oxtail bones filled with shredded beef with toasted bread besides each bone. A true delight to savor.

If the Bone Marrow is too much for you, the Beef Cheek Toast would be more appropriate as it has the same shredded beef on top of a toasted bread. Another real treat is the Escargot Tortellini. A plate of 4 tortellini smothered with creamy sauce with bits of bacon was the utmost satisfaction that we got. It was my first time in a long time that I tried escargot but it actually tasted like beef. Tasty and delicious!

Deconstructed Apple Pie-001

Lastly, we just had to have dessert therefore our waiter suggested the apple pie but this was not any ordinary apple pie. This was a Desconstructed Apple Pie. The pie was served with 4 fluffy pastries on one side, cinnamon ice cream in one jar and the apple filling in another jar. One had to place all of these items in the plate. It was delish and proved that by this time we were completely full.

Other than the plates we tried, the mediterranean-style cuisine also had more selections of tapas, raw seafood, and a sushi bar. One can sit at the dock area gazing as the marine boats pass by and enjoying a nice night out under the stars. A suitable place to dine with a loved one and/or with friends. A true gem!

A Respect for Light

Carlos Suarez De Jesus

Mario Algaze is the rare lensman with an innate talent for harnessing the subtle interplay of light and shadow to capture his subjects in a poetic and timeless fashion. The prominent Cuban-American photographer is celebrating“A Respect for Light: The Photography of Mario Algaze” at HistoryMiami (101 W. Flagler St., Miami), which features more than 150 of Algaze’s attention-commanding images shot throughout Latin America and the Caribbean over the past 40 years. The sprawling show, which marks his most ambitious exhibit to date and his first retrospective museum exhibition in more than a decade, will also include some of the shutterbug’s early concert photography, offering a rare look at South Florida’s vibrant musical history. Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., you can catch Algaze’s intimate portrayal of life in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Cuba, as well as other countries in the hemisphere, where Algaze has documented the people and places he’s visited soon after daybreak in the luminous conditions he favors. “The most important ingredient in my photographs is a very early-morning light, a magical light, which on most days only allows you about an hour to work,” Algaze explains. “There’s a certain quality before 9:30 in the morning, where light hits in a 45-degree angle and there are long shadows and soft light. If I could, I would light every scene, but I can’t. I have to rely on Mother Nature,” Algaze writes in the forward to his new book, A Respect for Light: The Latin American Photographs 1974-2008, which is being released in conjunction with the exhibition. Admission to the opening reception is free and includes complimentary wine, gourmet cheeses, and live music. Call 305-375-1492 or visit historymiami.org.

Miami protesters shut down traffic on I-195

12/05/2014 6:42 PM

12/06/2014 1:33 PM

Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article4301592.html#storylink=cpy

Hundreds of protesters marched through Miami streets Friday evening and onto Interstate-195, jamming the highway, Midtown and Wynwood for hours as part of a national response to police-involved killings.

The Shut It Down rallies, which broke out this week from coast to coast, followed the recent decisions of grand juries in New York and Ferguson, Mo., not to indict police officers who killed unarmed black men. In Miami, protesters also remembered local teen and graffiti artist Israel “Reefa” Hernandez Llach, who died more than a year ago when he was Tasered by Miami Beach police following a foot chase.

The Miami event began at about 5 p.m. in Midtown at Northwest 36th Street and First Avenue, where a mostly young, multi-cultural crowd of dozens, some in Guy Fawkes masks, silently gathered and then grew in numbers and volume. A crowd numbering several hundred walked down the street, onto an on-ramp and up into traffic on Interstate-195, which leads to and from Miami Beach.

“Shut it down! Shut it down!” they chanted.

Waving “Brutality” banners and signs bearing Hernandez Llach’s face, they stood arm-in-arm and blocked east- and west-bound lanes, the latter clogged for miles back onto Miami Beach. One man with a sign that said “Black lives matter” pressed his sign up against idle car and bus windows as he passed by.

A cadre of Florida Highway Patrol and Miami police stood by and watched in the blue and red of flashing police lights.

Earlier in the day, another graffiti artist had been taken to the hospital after being struck by a police car during a chase.

Friday’s march was the first incident of post-Ferguson protest in Miami, a city known more for cocktails and parties than activism, at least in recent years. The rally, organized on Facebook, drew national media attention along with rallies in Washington D.C., New York and Chicago, where traffic was also intentionally gridlocked. In terms of garnering attention, it was perfectly timed to disrupt Miami amid Art Basel and scores of satellite fairs.

The rally was embraced by some who were inconvenienced.

“I understand it. I agree with it,” said Betty Hechavarria, who was late for a nail appointment and running out of gas.

After about an hour, the group marched briskly back onto Biscayne Boulevard and again through Midtown, continuing to block traffic while chanting “Reefa lives.” Marchers mostly shut down Midtown and then Wynwood, where bemused Baselers snapped photos and gallery owners watched from their shops.

In front of a BET party, the group shouted “Hands up, don’t shoot,” a phrase that emerged after Michael Brown was shot dead in a conflict with a Ferguson officer. Around 8 p.m., scores simply laid down on North Miami Avenue in silence for close to five minutes.

“We’re out here to let people know that there are people here who care about this issue,” said Ernisha Randolph, an African American and director of social action for the Woodson Institute in Miami. “It’s only a matter of time before this situation hits home for us.”

Hashim Benford, a member of the Power U Center, addressed the crowd as the protest ended, saluting the large turnout.

“Miami has never been shut down like we shut it down,” Benford said. “Tonight we shut down Art Basel.”

He added: “Tonight is not the end. If we’re satisfied with this [showing], there will be more Reefas, more Michael Browns, more Trayvons.”

We welcome Boys Noize back to Grand Central.

Alex Ridha – better known to the world as Boys Noize – has been making electronic music and working as a DJ for over half of his life.
He established himself as one of the world’s preeminent wizards behind the decks, having played the world’s biggest stages alongside the biggest names in dance music.
His sets are equally uplifting, not only technically but also as a showman, leaving unforgettable experiences for the witnesses. One of the reasons why the Rolling Stone voted Boys Noize amongst the Top10 `DJs who rule the earth` in 2012.

As a recording artist and producer, Ridha has created his own sound, and pioneered his own brand, amassing a formidable body of work in the process.
He has released three albums (2007’s Oi Oi Oi , 2009’s Power and 2012´s Out Of The Black) and countless singles as Boys Noize, as well as doing profoundly influential work as a remixer and producer for everyone from Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Feist, David Lynch to Jarvis Cocker, Santigold, Scissor Sisters and Chilly Gonzales.

He has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, genius film maker Mr. Oizo (on a project called Handbraekes), Erol Alkan, and most recently Skrillex (under the moniker of Dog Blood) and won Beatport’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ 3 years in a row.

Ridha is also the heart of Boysnoize Records, the label that he started back in 2005. Founded originally as a means to get his own music out into the world, Boysnoize Rec.—and it’s sub-label, BNR Trax—is now home to more than a dozen artists (including up-and-comers like 18-year old SCNTST, Le1f, Spank Rock, Strip Steve, Peaches and Siriusmo) and responsible for over 100 releases while remaining fully independent.
“I don´t compromise when it comes to music,” says Ridha. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label”

Despite his ever-expanding label roster and the increased demand for his time as a producer and remixer, Ridha’s primary loves continue to be the twin pursuits of making and performing music.
Following the release of his third long-player Out Of The Black in late 2012, he presented the first Boys Noize ‘Live’ show to the masses.
“I really wanted to give people a concert where I perform my music only. It´s not that I don´t like DJing anymore, I´m a DJ to the bone and will always be. But playing my tracks live and putting on a completely new show was something I wanted to do for a long time. It´s different and fresh and that is what I love.”

Join us for the launch of the Ladies of Manure Calendar for 2015! It’s been a long road and we finally made it! We’re ready for the New Year with 12 months of beautiful eco-conscious women spreading the message of turning waste into treasure. Enjoy FREE drinks and fun tunes hosted at the NugBrand Clothing Co. store located at 2324 North Miami Ave. Meet the ladies behind the poop and get your copy ($20) for the new year! All proceeds benefit Fertile Earth Foundation.

The 2015 Ladies of Manure Calendar will be released at Nugbrand Pop-up Shop located at 2324 North Miami Ave. Fertile Earth, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has released their second edition of the Ladies of Manure calendar. The project was launched in 2013 to spark awareness on our waste and how it can be used a resource rather than just waste.

An educational calendar with a twist, these ladies make poop look good. With the help of Terribly Girly pin-up photography company, we took 12 local eco-conscious loving women and glammed them up in the best manure photo shoot ever planned. A true one of a kind concept, you’ll want to read up on the description of each photo to understand the message that will spark change in today’s world with eye catching images.

Hosted at the Nugbrand Clothing Co. Pop-Up Shop in Wynwood, free drinks will be provided to toast to Mother Nature and this beautiful thing we call waste. For in this world, there is no waste, it is something we humans have created. If you’re not sure what we mean by this, stop by the launch party and grab your copy or simply order one online and see for yourself and you too can reduce waste.

Six Characters in Search of an Author adapted by Steve Moulds from the play by Luigi Pirandello, directed by Wayne E. Robinson Jr.

The play that brought Pirandello world-wide fame. This new look heightens the comic contrast between melodrama and contemporary skepticism while asking the audience to consider just what we believe is real.

Envisioning a Museum, the Sky’s the Limit

In Miami, the Bramans Plan the Institute of Contemporary Art

MIAMI — Norman Braman, the auto dealership magnate, has just uttered the words every contractor dreams of hearing: “Whatever the cost is, we will be building it, period.”

Sitting with his wife, Irma, on the patio of their Indian Creek Island home, off Miami Beach, he has been outlining their plans to single-handedly fund the design and construction of South Florida’s newest major museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. It could be a cultural game changer in a city crowded with four significant private museums, two more on the way and three public ones all focused on contemporary art.

With Mrs. Braman as co-chairwoman of its board, the plan is to build the museum on a lot in the Miami Design District donated by the real estate developer and fellow art collector Craig Robins, occupying 37,500 square feet across three floors. It will also have an adjoining 15,000-square-foot sculpture garden created by the Bramans’ purchase (and imminent razing) of three neighboring homes. Its opening is timed for the Art Basel Miami Beach fair in December 2016, with the promise of significant art loans from the Braman collection. Just don’t ask to see an actual budget.

“We haven’t even priced out the fire extinguisher system yet, because it doesn’t use water so it won’t damage the art,” Mrs. Braman said. “It’s still a bit of flying blind.”

This might be cause for taxpayer alarm, but Mr. Braman, a fixture on Forbes’s “400 Wealthiest Americans” list — which estimates his current net worth at nearly $2 billion from his auto dealerships, his former ownership of the Philadelphia Eagles, and one of the most impressive art collections in the country — insisted that “not one cent of taxpayer dollars are going into the construction, or the acquisition of properties for the sculpture garden, or anything.”

With estimated annual operating expenses of $5 million, the Bramans say they already have commitments from other private backers to ensure the museum’s first decade of operation. Mr. Braman waves off concerns about funding an endowment. “If an institution has not made it after 10 years, it shouldn’t be around anymore,” he said.

Don’t even ask about naming rights. “It’s the I.C.A. Miami, it’s not the Braman I.C.A. or anything like that,” Mr. Braman said, in a not-so-subtle swipe at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, a public-private partnership which led to the renaming of the city’s Miami Art Museum in honor of contributions from the developer Jorge M. Pérez, and which just celebrated its first year in its new waterfront home.

The Bramans’ insistence on footing the bill contrasts starkly with the shaky fiscal health of several local museums. While the Pérez’s attendance and museum memberships have exceeded initial projections, according to Michael Spring, director of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs — who called the museum’s first year “a rip-roaring success” — its endowment stands at $14 million, well below its announced target of $70 million. The museum operates with a reduced staff and a permanent collection often seen as lackluster.

This fall, the Pérez museum requested additional county funds to raise its annual subsidy to $4 million from its current $2.5 million, a request that fell on deaf ears amid a county budget crunch that saw both public librarians and the police facing layoffs. Critics noted the $100 million in construction money already provided by the county, as well as the marquee site donated by the City of Miami. Wasn’t that enough?

“The vast majority of cultural institutions in this community are supported through a blend of public and private funds,” countered Thom Collins, the museum’s director. “This is because they offer a broad public benefit, and people understand that.”

To be sure, money continues to pour into Miami’s real-estate-focused economy, as do prominent art world figures, including the New York über-dealer Larry Gagosian and the Russian art patron Maria Baibakova, who both have homes here.

Yet while many arrivals are quick to pose for Art Basel photographers, some museum trustees say these newcomers turn shy when it comes to writing checks to public museums. “The wealth in Miami, by and large, is used more for self-aggrandizement than civic support,” observed Lang Baumgarten, a Miami Beach developer and former Miami Art Museum trustee who said that he donated $400,000 and artwork before its renaming. “I wish the real money would step up to the plate.”

A lack of financial support led to the creation of the Institute of Contemporary Art, whose board previously managed the Museum of Contemporary Art, owned by the City of North Miami. After voters in the largely Haitian-American community rejected a $15 million bond issue to expand the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2012, its director, Bonnie Clearwater, left to head the Nova Southeastern University Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale. The fight over naming her successor mushroomed into bitter turmoil between museum board members and City Hall. A legal settlement last month ended with an entirely new city-appointed board at the museum.

“The team that’s reconstituted itself at MOCA seems to be going in a good direction,” said Mr. Robins, who is providing the Institute with temporary rent-free exhibition space while doing double duty as a Pérez trustee. “I hope the I.C.A. will motivate the people behind PAMM to do even better,” he said, adding that he hoped to see more donations to support world-class art purchases.

Mr. Spring denied any disappointment with the pace of fund-raising. “They’re hitting their marks,” he said.

Still, the Pérez may be in danger of being overshadowed: Art lovers craving an encounter with contemporary masterworks mostly absent from local museums — where even 1980 often feels like ancient history — may find the Institute more to their liking. The Pérez recently trumpeted a donation of a Jasper Johns print. The Bramans own his seminal 1962 painting “Diver,” as well as blue-chip works by de Kooning, Rothko, Warhol and what is called the finest array of Calders still in private hands.

The Bramans said that they look forward to lending many of their works to the institute. “If the curator and director of the museum want to have a show on the New York School of Artists, we’d be very happy to cooperate,” Mr. Braman said, referring to a hallowed era of Abstract Expressionists they’ve avidly collected. He also dangled the possibility of donating some paintings “in the future.”

Now 82, Mr. Braman recalled that he and his wife “said to ourselves: ‘What’s success all about? What’s philanthropy all about? Let’s think of our legacy, following in the footsteps of some great Americans like the Carnegies and the Mellons who used their wealth for quality purposes.’ ”

Mr. Collins was asked if the Pérez had sought its own modern-day Mellon. Why not tap Ms. Baibakova, whose recent Art Basel party featured white truffles, which fetch roughly $200 an ounce? “If you could make those introductions for me, it would certainly take a lot of pressure off,” he replied.

Local Artist Profiles: JC Bravo

Artist Juan Carlos "JC" Bravo
Artist Juan Carlos “JC” Bravo
By Tatiana Enriquez
Get to know local Artist JC Bravo: an artist who’s imagination and intuition are directly proportional to the size of the heads and noses of his Cabezones.
Isaac Newton once said, “I don’t know what I may appear to the world,  but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”  Like Newton,  Artist JC Bravo, one of the most prolific artists in our city, still feels that there is much more to be done, and much more to express and uncover through his artwork. His works are larger than life and expose and inflate sensitivities and hidden desires.
More about JC Bravo

JC Bravo was born in 1974 in Ica, Peru. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida International University. His artworks are influenced by his experiences growing up in the dichotomous countries of Peru and United States.Bravo’s works include painting, drawing and installation. They are influenced by the “opulence and underside of American Culture”.  His “Cabezones y Narizones “(Big Heads and Big Noses) are trademarked characters with exaggerated and disproportionate features.  Bravo explains, “These iconic characters with their swollen heads and bulbous noses personify abundance and sensuality.” Bravo uses these characters to …”express emotions, while creating surreal narratives that use irony and humor as tools to create social commentary. His work references Pop culture, religion and art history, as well as his own life.”.

When asked about his inspiration, Bravo explains “my inspiration comes from my life experiences. I love creating images that are inspired by dreams, memories and the people I encounter on a daily basis. I believe art has the power to transform our mundane experiences into something magical, it is like turning ashes into gold. My work is also influenced by art history and pop culture. I love watching films by David lynch and Federico Fellini, reading art biographies, listening to punk rock and browsing the internet for powerful images.  Surfing also inspires my art. I have been surfing since I was 15 years old and I have experienced many poignant and beautiful moments in the beach which have shaped my aesthetics.”

Bravo’s thoughts on the Miami art scene are that “…the Miami art scene is flourishing. It is wonderful to be able to go to museums and galleries all year round and see quality art. It’s also a tremendous gift to have art Basel in Miami; every year we have the privilege to be able to witness the best of the best displaying their work. All the street art is super exciting, it makes commuting quite enjoyable. My favorite places to visit in Miami are the Bakehouse Art Complex, the De La Cruz Collection and Lowe Art Museum. So much art to see and so little time!”

When asked how we can help the scene grow, he says ” I think we can make it grow by creating strong art; art that the world cannot deny will bring more critical attention to our city. By that I mean that we cannot just focus on creating decorative and colorful work. For the art world to take Miami seriously we need to create art that resonates with current issues and deals with the human condition, less vanity and more substance. There also needs to be more support from local artist from Miami collectors, that way artists can have more opportunities to explore and create without selling their souls. Instead of just buying work from known international names, collectors need to take a chance and Support local galleries and artists.”

Bravo gives back to his community and encourages others to do so. He has donated art work to the Miami Children’s Hospital and the Hollywood Art and Culture Center for their annual fundraiser show Abracadabra.
When asked for his advice for new and emerging artist, Bravo offers, “success depends on your ability to network, social skills. You can be the best painter in the world but if you don’t work on your people skills it will be a very hard road. Artists depend on patrons and collectors and those are people one has to establish strong relationships with. Kindness and respect goes a long way. Also, stay in touch and support other artists and you will build friendships that will help you along the way.  Work hard all day, everyday. Skip the parties and avoid vices, they are time consuming. The more you work the better your work will be. Instead of just painting stuff you like create work that expresses the way you feel and comments on society. Spill your guts out and people will like and respect you.”

So what’s next for JC Bravo?  He says, ” I am currently working on a new series of large surreal paintings that deal with my obsession with the ocean and post-apocalyptic movies. This series is going to be called “Waterword” and it will be my most radical work to date.  This new body of work will be exhibited at a solo show next year. Also, for next year I plan to unveil my fine art store called Bravo Arts were we will be offering Limited edition prints and original works for sale.”

MIAMI, FL – Nov. 3rd, 2014 – As part of the director’s collective effort to continue shedding light on the history behind Miami’s up-and-coming arts district, short film Right to Wynwood will now be available for online streaming to the general public. Winner for ‘Best Documentary’ at the 2013 Miami Short Film Festival, Right to Wynwood explores the causes and effects of gentrification, documenting how a Puerto Rican neighborhood became purposely unaffordable for its low-income residents and morphed into profitable opportunities of redevelopment for the money hungry.

After a series of interviews with developers, gallerists, artists, Puerto Rican residents and community leaders, producer Camila Álvarez and photographer Natalie Edgar carefully observed and documented the rapidly changing patterns of the community in Wynwood and saw the need to tell the story behind the so-called new Arts District in Miami, FL.

Although both Álvarez and Edgar are keen advocates of the opportunities that Wynwood brings to artists, they feel that creating awareness of how gentrification in Wynwood was developer–led instead of it being artist-led, as it happened in places like Soho in New York, or in Berlin, was necessary.

Even though street art started appearing in the neighborhood organically, when local art collective Primary Flight saw the opportunity to make Wynwood their playground, it soon became a marketing tool, when their efforts were co-opted by developers who realized that “including culture and arts in change was the best way to get the most bang for your buck,” as stated by David Lombardi, one of the first developers to start buying properties in the area, said Camila Álvarez, producer and co-director of the film.

The newly opened Miami Beach EDITION hotel by Ian Schrager is your sequel to the Delano Miami Beach. It’s no wonder why Viet N’Guyen chose this location for a private pop-up club to showcase Absolut Elyx.

Casa Elyx, a pop-up party in the penthouse of The EDITION, featured cocktails by John Lermayer that were served in a heavy copper pineapple, a swimming pool, ocean views, live music and a hidden speakeasy.

Jonas Tahlin, Chief Executive Officer for Absolut Elyx was present to greet guests and answer questions about the luxury vodka. The Miami Beach EDITION Hotel will surely be the new hangout for South Florida travelers and Casa Elyx did an amazing job hosting vacationers and locals by providing an relaxing escape from the Art Basel frenzy.

The VIP only private event featured live performances by platinum, award-winning, Danish singer-songwriter NABIHA and American hip-hop recording artist and producer, Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean.

Premieres December 11 at Sun Life Stadium
New Show Dates Added, Limited Tickets Available From As Low As $35

Amaluna by Cirque du Soleil will open to a packed house in Miami on Thursday December 11 at Sun Life Stadium. The cast and crew of Amaluna are finishing up shows in Atlanta, GA this week and are preparing to travel to Miami with their 2,000 tonnes of equipment, in the convoy of 65 trucks.

To celebrate the Premiere in Miami and due to an overwhelming demand, additional show dates have been added with some tickets starting as low as $35. Tickets can be purchased by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/amalu… or by calling 1-877-9 CIRQUE. Amaluna’s show dates have now been extended to run in Miami until January 25 2015.

Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.

Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was but a dream. It was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and of the world. The family has grown since then and now includes thousands of dreamers–creators, artists, technicians and workers who toil in the shadows. The dream has become a symbol of Québec pride, an international entertainment company that has brought 35 large-scale shows to life–20 of which are still in operation. The company, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in June 2014, has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.

Amaluna is proud to be presented by Visa Signature, the official presenting sponsor of Cirque du Soleil, in association with Citi Cards. We also gratefully acknowledge our official sponsors for Amaluna, DHL and Xerox.

Limestone Bearing Gold Veins, commissioned by the Bass Museum of Art, features faux limestone rock made from common materials and glue infused with gold leaf and gold metallic powder. While made in the image of a natural material found throughout South Florida––and on top of which Miami Beach itself is built––the faux limestone is complex and painstakingly handmade. The installation, which includes a wallpapered archway and two benches positioned at the intersection of the museum’s original 1930 building and its modern addition, mimics Miami’s geological makeup while also addressing the city’s architectural and design strategies aimed at portraying grandeur and power.

Set on the stunning waterfront of Biscayne Bay, Mondrian South Beach captures all the heat, intensity, energy and vibe of the original Mondrian in Los Angeles. Revolutionary Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ whimsical and visionary style for the hotel is an homage to “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.” In the soaring lobby, where the scene is about “see-and-be-seen”, floor-to-ceiling windows offer spectacular views of the Bay, while the eye is drawn to the masterpiece of the room–an iconic, signature “floating staircase.” Prepare for a night out at our signature South Beach spa, agua, or work off last night’s indulgence at our world-class gym. Enjoy a meal indoors or al fresco at our a restaurant focused on locally sourced ingredients, or a specialty cocktail at Sunset Lounge. Shop at our Semi Automatic machine for unique items and necessities, curated by BASE. Also on site is a private marina exclusively for guests’ use. Located on newly-fashionable West Avenue, Mondrian is just minutes from the center of South Beach, downtown Miami, Miami Design District, Wynwood Arts District, Venetian Causeway, Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive and Espanola Way.

Life Is Art Official Call for Artists – Life Is Art Block at Art Deco Weekend Deadline December 21, 2014

artdecoweekendcallforartists6

JOIN LIFE IS ART FOR ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVENTS OF THE YEAR!

Life Is Art Official Call for Artists: “Local Art Block” at Art Deco Weekend 2015

We are very excited to announce that The Miami Design Preservation League has invited Life Is Art to host a local art show within their 38th Annual Art Deco Weekend! On January 16th, 17th, and 18th, Life Is Art will have an entire block of Ocean Drive, from 11th to 12th Street to fill with amazing artists from South Florida. With an annual draw of 300,000 attendees per weekend and coverage in all the major press, this is an excellent opportunity.

Life Is Art is creating our very own “Local Art Zone” within the Art Deco Weekend Festival called the LIFE IS ART BLOCK! All of our artists will be gathered into the block between 11th and 12th Streets on Ocean Drive, the Art Block featuring only local artists. Thanks to the Miami Design Preservation League, we can offer a special price for local artists, lower than any of the other vendors at Art Deco Weekend! Plus, a portion of the booth fee goes to support Life Is Art, so we can bring you even more programming throughout the year.

Spaces are limited, when they are gone, they are gone, so buy your booth soon!

Miami Boheme nights, now scheduled every Friday is inspired by the documentary film written and directed by Joe Cardona. Joe, who will be hosting the event tomorrow is a documentary filmmaker and a writer for the Miami Herald. He coined the term ” miami boheme” to describe a genre of music he saw developing in Miami. Below, is a brief summary of the film:

Miami Boheme: An American Musical Journey is an hour-long PBS documentary about Miami’s original Latin-fusion bands and the cutting-edge scene surrounding them. The film takes viewers to clubs where the beats of bands such as Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Suénalo, PALO!, Elastic Bond, and Afrobeta getthe room dancing. The film is a bilingual mash up of rhythms and cultures. It is a one-hour jam session like no other: a fusion of sights, sounds, and ideas that meld together to form the fabric of America’s most dynamic city, Miami.

As part of the The Miami Boheme nights, Joe will host each night by engaging in dialogue with the performers, and by providing commentary to the audience. Joe will also be introducing new bands that have never been previously classified as “miami boheme” into the mix.

Carla Fache opens her studio for Art Basel Week 2014
Wednesday Dec 3rd – 9am`1pm

Visitors will have the opportunity to have an intimate look inside the artist’s studio and learn more about her new works.

In her studio, Fache will have some of her recent works in exhibition. Among them, “Untitled” an acrylic big escale painting and a new installation.

Carla Fache is a chilean born Miami-based visual artist who explores the frontiers of color, space, balance and matter, through her paintings and installations.

Her work unfolds the juncture of parallel scenarios that occur simultaneously to quotidian realities, providing dimensions of escape against the society status quo, leverage a reconnection through her canvas portals.

Color is essential in Fache’s work; she explores its infinite combinations and balance through careful blending primary and secondary colors, re- contextualizing the concept of coexistence, time and universality; a return to the essential.

Her work employs a variety of materials including traditional canvas, but also introducing unusual artifacts, expanding outside of the two-dimensional plane of the canvas and into the surrounding environment.

“Opening the doors of my studio is like opening the door of color to my canvas’s mental space”, explains Fache.

Her more recent exhibitions include: Florida Museum for Women Artists, The Invisible Dog Art Center-New York, Armory Art Center- Palm Beach, Cambridge Art Association-Boston and Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Some of the places where her work has been exhibited are: CIFO Cisneros Fontanels Arts Foundation, The Bass Museum of Art, Deering Estate at Cutler, Lowe Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and Coral Gables Museum to mention a few.

Fache’s work has been included in many publications, such as: “Celeste Prize International 2011” New York, “White Hot Magazine”, “New York Art Collectors Book” NY, “Five centuries of Art” LA, “Libro de Arte Ibero Americano Contemporaneo” Argentina, “Studio Visit Magazine” by New American Paintings, Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Knight Arts, Miami New Times, SunPost, Sun-Sentinel, Miami Rail among others. Mana Miami includes three distinct displays: Mana Monumental, a selection of large-scale works by artists who have a studio in, exhibited at, or are otherwise connected to Mana; GLE at Mana, recent projects from the celebrated screen-printing studio Gary Lichtenstein Editions; and Dirty Geometry, a survey of twenty-three Latin American artists who reject traditional geometric style in favor of a playful, erotic ethos. Daily roundtable discussions, called Mana Sessions, explore themes such as alternative museum pedagogy, the evolution of independent art publications, and social media-driven shifts in aesthetic perception. Talk About It Tuesday: ITPalooza South Florida

ITPalooza is an annual gathering of South Florida’s tech groups, and this year, on Thursday, December 4, it will bring more than 2,000 registrants, 60 speakers, 65 sponsors, and 50 tech groups from across South Florida together. This gathering provides attendees the opportunity to network and meet many of the 2,000 IT professionals at the session, at tables, or at the holiday party and find a technology group that’s right for them. The sessions will provide talks to share knowledge, and tables will allow for the promotion of organizations and the chance to learn about solutions, vendors, and products. In addition, there will be a hiring fair, which allows attendees to either find new IT employees or find work for themselves. The goal of this event is to help grow the South Florida IT market and support local nonprofits and charities. As a nonprofit group, ITPalooza gives attendees the option to pay for attendance by donating toys worth $25 to the US Marine Corp’s “Toys for Tots” charity. The event will end with a holiday party with a featured band comprised of local technologists.

ART BASEL Exhibit of Paintings by Dale Nally
Dec 4-7, 2014
Open Daily 12noon-8pm
with general reception Saturday December 6, 6-8pm

From Kentucky farm boy to celebrated artist, Dale Nally wore many hats. An artist, a man, but most importantly a spiritual being, he embodied a sense of kindness and a gentleness of spirit seldom found in other men. His remarkable paintings were most certainly his passion, but Dale devoted his life to helping the downtrodden wherever he encountered a needy soul. Many human beings can relate to having a spiritual experience, but Dale Nally was truly a spiritual being having a human experience. His spirituality permeated his life in every aspect, from his yoga practice to the profoundly emotional creation of his work, which evokes a sense of calm and a peaceable nature. Dale’s paintings are greatly influenced by his travels and studies in Asia as well as his rural, Appalachian upbringing. His canvases are organic rather than static objects. The connection with nature is always palpable while experiencing one of his pieces.

Threefold Cafe / Teresa Sharp

Threefold Cafe, Coral Gables’ newest all-day breakfast spot, serves up a unique combination of Australian dishes with a Florida twist. Opened this Summer by two Melbourne transplants, Teresa and Nick Sharp, they offers diners a taste of their native Australia dining philosophy with fresh local food. Chat Chow TV sat down Teresa to find out more about the restaurant, its extensive coffee offerings and some of the restaurant’s top dishes.

The pair relocated to Coral Gables after Nick was transferred for work. Missing Melbourne’s “off the charts” coffee the duo decided to open Threefold Cafe. All the coffee is sourced locally from Panther Coffee with all the baristas professional trained on-site by their coffee “Yoda” from Panther Coffee.

The menu encompasses their love of breakfast featuring dishes made with plenty of free range eggs, Zak the Baker bread and lots of creativity. Some top sellers according to Teresa are the “Pope Benedict” served on top of hash browns instead of English muffins; the “Smashed Avocado” bread and the “Not So French Toast” — a savory take on a classic breakfast dish.

Curious what lunch offerings Threefold offers? Or where they source their products from? Find out all that and more in the video above.

THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE BEATLES?
HISTORYMIAMI TO HOST PANEL MODERATED BY MAGIC 102.7’S JOE JOHNSON

MIAMI – NOV. 14, 2014 – Smithsonian affiliate HistoryMiami will host a panel discussion, “Think You Know Everything About The Beatles?” moderated by Magic 102.7 FM’s radio personality and Beatles expert Joe Johnson, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. The panel will explore the frenzy that ensued when the Fab Four made their historic visit to Miami 50 years ago.

Panelists for the December discussion include Ed Rudy, creator of “The Beatles American Tour with Ed Rudy” interview albums, Bob Saxon, known for his iconic sneak into the afternoon rehearsal of The Ed Sullivan Show at the Deauville Hotel, and Rick Shaw, the Miami radio legend who was the first deejay to play The Beatles on the radio in the “Magic City.”

Fresh from a European Beatles cruise, Johnson cannot wait to exercise his area of expertise. “I’m thrilled to share our Miami connect to The Beatles at HistoryMiami and introduce three amazing men who will tell their stories from the eight days The Beatles spent in Miami, February of ’64,” he said. “What a fab time it was.”

HistoryMiami is temporarily home to Ladies and Gentlemen…The Beatles! – a traveling exhibition, curated by The GRAMMY Museum® and Fab Four Exhibits, presenting more than 400 pieces of Beatles Memorabilia. The exhibit explores the impact the four lads from Liverpool had on American pop culture, from early 1964 through mid-1966.

“The response to Ladies & Gentlemen…The Beatles! exhibition has been nothing short of fantastic! The frenzy the Fab Four created 50 years ago in Miami is back and visitors have been having a great time at HistoryMiami,” said Stuart Chase, HistoryMiami Museum Director/COO.

To RSVP for the panel discussion, call (305) 375-1601 or online at https://historymiami.wufoo.com/forms/think-you-know-everything-about-the-beatles/. “Think You Know Everything About The Beatles” panel discussion is free with paid museum admission ($8 Adults, $7 Seniors and Students, $5 for children ages 6 – 12, and free for HistoryMiami members and students under 6).

Blake Emory Debuts Zebra Love at Spectrum Miami During Art Basel Miami Beach 12/3/14 – 12/7/14

Blake Emory, one of today’s newest thought-provoking abstract artists will debut his highly anticipated trademark collection of works in Optic Modernism at this year’s Spectrum Miami exhibit during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Zebra Love is the latest anthology by the New York artist, whose collective series of theoretical works is capturing the attention of not only the fine art world, but the country’s leading brand visionaries within the marketing community.

Emory’s Zebra Love series represents the artist’s inspired discovery of what he refers to as “nature’s grand design” that encapsulates an artistic expression of retro fashion with love, passion and “divine geometry” from the animal kingdom. Zebra Love portrays an underlying theme based on a fluid visual depiction of Zebra stripes that are carved to form the foundation of a multi-dimensional approach to acrylic on canvas. Using an individual female model and form as the muse for every piece of work, the curvaceous and nude silhouette of each chosen woman is juxtaposed against the Zebra design and blended within the center of the frame to convey a layered optical illusion at first glance. Emory describes his final touch as a “passionate step in to the world of love needed to liberate us from the human construct,” illustrated by a retro-style red stiletto worn on one foot – giving the black and white design its signature dash of vibrant color, fashionable overture and overtly sexual connotation. Each painting ranges from between 40×30 inches in size, up to 5ft by 8ft in height.

“I like to think of my work as representing the unity of mankind,” says Blake Emory. “The Zebra is one of nature’s grandest designs and I fell in love with this beautiful formation and found that its geometry gave me a new form of expression in Optic Modernism. The female figure represents the world of love and what I believe is a type of ‘social silhouette.’ I’m very proud of my latest work and I look forward to sharing my vision and inspirations with everyone for the inaugural show at Art Basel.”

Each painting from Emory’s 15-piece collection is entitled after the women whose voluntary participation is part of the creative process. “Josephine” is Emory’s most beloved and original work of art, with “Flove” cited by Emory as the most “sexual” and “controversial’ from his collection. Other example names of his artwork include “Shauna,” “Billy Leigh” and “Levon.”

The conceptual process Emory uses for his work is very unique to his particular artistic style. Initial drawings are made of the Zebra contours from original photography, which are then projected on to a wall. An undressed female model then stands in front of the wall, on to which the Zebra pattern is captured over the entire body, from which Emory extracts a silhouette on to his canvas using oil based acrylic. Emory paints the juxtaposition of the body against the wall projection with the model wearing the red stiletto – resulting in a 3-D optical illusion.

Following the development of his own mural business at junior high school, Emory started discovering new techniques in fine art at the age of 17 years old. While living in Miami Beach by the time he was 19, Emory used Lincoln Road on South Beach to showcase his work. Marketing entrepreneur, Michael Alden, stumbled across Emory’s Zebra Love series in 2011 and purchased a number of paintings before quickly turning in to a major fan of his collection. On the first day of January 2014, Alden rediscovered Emory’s work after purchasing a portrait of Madonna that was donated by the artist to the Global Deeds foundation for underprivileged children in Beverly, Massachusetts. Alden befriended Emory after seeing the marketing and merchandising potential for the Zebra Love brand and a new business relationship was born.

“As an avid art collector, I immediately took a fondness to Blake’s work,” says Michael Alden, President and CEO of Blue Vase Marketing, LLC and Zebra Love, LLC. “The entire Zebra Love concept transcends the art world with a massive potential for other products that could incorporate this innovative and compelling design. The sensual nature of Blake’s artistic impression is both striking and very appealing to the eye. Blake’s creativity coupled with our marketing ingenuity has enabled us to develop the Zebra Love brand in to more than just an art form. We have some exciting plans for expanding Zebra Love in 2015 and Art Basel Miami Beach is an excellent forum for the industry to experience Blake’s work.”

Alden and his marketing team at Blue Vase, in partnership with Emory, have translated the Zebra Love concept on to frosted glass and plan on releasing a limited edition premium vodka in March 2015, aptly named “EMORY VODKA.” Imported and bottled by the newly formed Zebra Love, LLC parent company, Emory’s Zebra Love design is embossed on to a signature artisan bottle, complete with Emory’s trademark red stiletto. Emory Vodka marks the first brand extension in the Zebra Love series and features Emory’s “Shauna1” design for the inaugural product adaptation. A portion of proceeds from the sales of Emory Vodka will be donated to the ASPCA to help prevent cruelty to animals.

For the last four years, Emory has established his own ‘Emory Gallery’ currently open in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, at which his Zebra Love collection is exhibited, along with his other original works of art. Emory helps spearhead The Brooklyn Artist Guild – a donation based education program that identifies talented and emerging artists who join the group in an effort to highlight the Neo Renaissance movement through their multi-media work in the theatrical and visual arts.

A selection of original works from Blake Emory’s Zebra Love collection will be exhibited at Spectrum Miami, located in the city’s Midtown district, priced between $7,500 and $15,000.

Art , Food , Music!

Art exists in various forms. Some use a single haired brush to shade the eyelashes on a portrait. Some arbitrarily splatter paint across a canvas. Some put a giant fucking sea creature in a tank and freeze it in time. And then some choose to mix frequencies created by synthesizers with rhythms made by drum machines, all with the intention to dance for hours and hours, and be transported to another mindset.

So, for Art Basel 2014, we celebrate this form of art with an all day long musical exposition at STEAM in Miami’s heart of Downtown. There will be live art painting. There will be sensory overloading food. And, of course, there will be techno. So leave your turtle-necked, horn-rimmed glasses wearing, contemporary art blog reading friends at the expo center (or bring them) and come celebrate one of the most important forms of art with us.

Event is Free and open to the public!

A week-long art and entertainment fair focusing on progressive art is set to take center stage during Art Basel Week. The pop up gallery and lounge is affectionately called Basel House, because it’s home to the largest collection of pure street artists along with mixed media, digital artists and sculptures. For those who like street art and graffiti, there’s no place else to be. Artists will paint live on canvas, brick walls and anything they can get their hands on, including a 1961 Bentley. Their work will also be displayed inside a 10,000 square-foot gallery called The Art House. A neat interactive feature of this event will allow people to try their hand at creating their own street art. On a daily basis, Canvas Vandals will host and help people unleash their “inner vandal” creativity on canvas.

“Basel House is designed to be inclusive of all artists and people. That’s why this event is free to the public. We’ve gone through great lengths to bring well-known graffiti artists from around the world, because we feel strongly that all art is important, whether you find it on a brick wall or a gallery wall,” said Tony Albelo, the event organizer.

In addition to live art from artists such as Greg Mike, Claw Money, Cope2, Kue Molly, Monorex and 2wenty, there will be live music with bands and VJ’s performing each night throughout the event. Also, the Top 21 Food Trucks will be present including Latin Burger, Inspir-Asian, King Of Racks BBQ, Poblano’s Mexican Fusion, The Health Nut On Wheels, Mobstah Lobstah, Conch Shack Food Junkies, and HipPOPs Handcrafted Gelato, to name a few.

If that weren’t enough, there will be an Arts & Crafts Showcase highlighting the uniqueness of Wynwood artisans with their hand-crafted creations.

All areas open at 12 noon each day and close at midnight, with the exception of The Art House, which will remain open until 2 a.m.

Trim jackets feature a Nehru collar with a lapel and shirts are cut long to be worn over the slim, soft trouser. Peri Schwartz is included in collections internationally, among them the British Museum, London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., and the Kupferstichkabinett-Staatliche Museum, Berlin. Working with different media is an important part of the process Schwartz uses to develop her works. Representing similar subjects and formal arrangements in a variety of media challenges her to rethink and revise her compositions. The initial works done in her Studio series were created using charcoal; this allowed her to easily rework their compositions. Schwartz then alternated between creating paintings, drawings, and mono-types of the same subject; this method of moving back and forth between different media further facilitates the process she uses to work out formal arrangements.

Schwartz also addresses pictorial challenges in her Bottle &Jars series. In the carefully composed but compressed space of these works, attention is drawn to how the bottles and jars fill the picture plane and how they relate to each other and the space around them. In the way this is done, it is clear color and shapes are as much the subject of these works as are the bottles and jars themselves. The effect is that these works must be understood as a modern synthesis of representation and abstraction.

The Wrapped Objects were first exhibited at the Fine Arts Center Galleries at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. They are included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Fogg Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and Memorial Art Gallery. In the catalog for the exhibition, Judith Tolnick Champa describes the work: In her idiosyncratic pastel drawings known as Wrapped Objects – Schwartz’s demonstrated expertise in figural art is brought to bear on a powerful sense of the self-containment associated with still-life, rather than figural practice. The Wrapped Objects ultimately derive from a campaign of intensive study of anatomy and its intimate historical correlative, drapery’s connection to the human body. The dazzling drapery interpretations of legendary figurative painters including the 16th-century Venetian, Titian; the 17th-century Spaniard, Diego Velazquez, the Fleming, Anthony Van Dyck and the 19th-century French artist Jean-August-Dominique Ingres, offers models of an art historical sort cited by the artist as the first Wrapped Objects were created and conjured by her work. Schwartz understands the accomplished pictorial means which these exemplars developed for interpreting their complex royal/aristocratic subjects. The subject is present beneath the drapery, but its individual shape and character – clues to its identity – are conveyed only through the push and pull, the tightness or laxness, the intricate surface wrap. And in the process the surface wrap gains its own freestanding vitality and identity.

Understanding shifts as Schwartz’s mysterious subjects become curious Wrapped Objects and figuration melds into a re-emergent sensation of still life. Exactly what is being represented is of less importance than how pictorial effects are achieved. Technically, Schwartz works in pastel but without the assistance of a coarse granular paper. She chooses a more finely grained and technically unforgiving surface, so that textures must be constructed through precise calibration of light and dark tonalities. Her pastels behave almost like charcoals as the richness of blue-blacks contrasts with the smooth matrix of white paper.

The Jungle Brothers

The Jungle Brothers

Straight Out the Jungle, Mike Gee (born Michael Small; Harlem, NY), DJ Sammy B (born Sammy Burwell; Harlem, NY), and Baby Bam (born Nathaniel Hall; Brooklyn, NY) came together as the Jungle Brothers in the mid-’80s and began their recording career at the dance label Idler. The result of the sessions, Straight Out the Jungle, was released in early 1988. The album’s Afrocentric slant gained the Jungle Brothers entry into the Native Tongue Posse, a loose collective formed by hip-hop legend Afrikaa Bambaataa, including Queen Latifah (and, later, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest). The album’s most far-out cut was “I’ll House You,” a collaboration with house producer Todd Terry and an early experiment in what later became known as hip-house. The single “I’ll House You,” added to the album in 1989, is known for being the first hip-house record recorded outside of the Chicago scene, which was a club hit that drastically changed the way the hip-hop and dance-music industries worked. Their first album, Straight Out the Jungle, was released on an independent record label (Warlock). In spite of the commercial failure of Straight Out the Jungle, Warner Bros. Records soon signed the group and released Done By the Forces of Nature in November 1989. The album was a critical smash at the time, though it has since been largely ignored by hip-hop critics in favor of the similarly acclaimed alternative hip-hop album 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul, released the same year. – See more at: http://www.hiphopscriptures.com/jungle-brothers/#sthash.cWBDXsyV.dpuf

Art Africa Miami Arts Fair Set To Weave Art and Culture Into The Fabric Of The #HistoricOvertown Cultural Movement

#HistoricOvertownSoulBasel Is The Cultural Epicenter of Cultural Influence For Arts, Culture and Music

Miami, Fl-November 18, 2014-The Urban Collective continues to invigorate the cultural landscape of the Historic Overtown community with the anticipation of this year’s 2014 Art Africa Miami Arts Fair(AAMAF), taking place December 3-7, 2014 at 801 NW 3rd Ave, Miami, Fl 33136. The AAMAF remains relevant in its 4th year, and continues to push boundaries, leading the way for innovation, creativity and inclusion of some of the top art artist influencers of the African and Caribbean Diaspora. The Art Africa Arts Fair  is funded by the Southeast Overtown/ Park West Community Redevelopment Agency This year’s fair falls under the marketing campaign and moniker of #HistoricOvertownSoulBasel and was orchestrated by The Urban Collective’s CEO, Neil Hall, as a collaborative partnership between the City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon, Southeast Overtown Parkwest Community Redevelopment Agency and the Black Archives of art cultural offerings throughout Overtown during Art Basel in December. #HistoricOvertownSoulBasel celebrates Overtown’s music, art and cultural vibe. The Urban Collective is a social conscious design, art and culture lifestyle brand created to inform, inspire and engage underserved communities in the power of the arts to transform their environment.

In 2011, visionary, architect and creator of AAMAF, Neil Hall launched the inaugural AAMAF that showcased engaging and thought provoking art that served a continuum of the Black, Caribbean, social, political, hip hop artistic strand that spoke to the Black presence missing from the Art Basel script. The AAMAF narrative has ignited a spark in the urban art community resulting in the creation of art fairs like Prizm, Kroma, Fusion Mia, Global Caribbean and Multitudes added to this cultural revolution. The wave of celebrations continues with the appointment of Babacar M’Bow as the Director of MOCA North Miami and also the Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau’s Cultural Department’s marketing campaign Art of Black Miami. This years location for AAMAF was make possible by a partnership with the Mt. Zion Developments, Incorporated.

“This year’s effort continues to sustain the dynamic discourse of the AAMAF narrative and artistic strands of Black and Caribbean culture revolution”, boldly stated by cultural influencer, Neil Hall.

“Art, music, dance, and culture once reflected the vibrancy of the Overtown community. The Art Africa Arts Fair assists Historic Overtown in highlighting such a rich history while ensuring it participates in the blossoming of a new era of excellence,” stated by District 5, City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon.
“All across the country, art has been a catalyst for the rebirth of communities that have been disinvested,” said Clarence Woods, SEOPW CRA Executive Director “ We see Art Africa as one of the sparks that will help to light the flames of economic prosperity here in Overtown.

AAMAF opens Wednesday, December 3, 2014 with a reception from 7pm-10pm,immediately following the opening night of #HistoricOvertownSoulBasel: A Celebration of Art, Music that will showcase the works of the late Overtown artist Purvis Young at the Lyric Theatre. The AAMAF gallery opens daily from 11am-7pm.

Impulse, Reason, Sense, Conflict. Abstract Art from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection attempts to focus on the typical features of abstraction that still permeate in art production today and define it as a movement instead of an aesthetic category. The exhibit is divided in five areas: Abstract Impulses is dedicated to the crisis in representation and the rupture in mimetic representation. Laboratory of Reason refers to the questioning of the nature, essence and even the existence of art. Uncommon Senses relates to the integration and crossover of other mediums and other art forms that required the use of multiple senses, both from its makers and art’s viewers. Spatial Conflicts touches on Abstraction as a radical change in the conception of spatiality. The last section Expanded Field deals with many artists’ experimentation with non-traditional media like photography, film and collage. This group of works will only exist in a separate form in the catalogue. In the exhibition space they will be presented within the other curatorial groupings.

The exhibition includes 101 pieces by 72 artists from different generations and latitudes, who share their interpretations and philosophies of abstraction. This exhibit will also be the first CIFO exhibit curated by the foundation itself.

MSG has been creating large-scale graffiti murals in Miami, Florida for close to 20 years. Artists range from sculptors and bombers to fine artists and illustrators. The MSG crew started when a group of up and coming artists were doing a new style of graffiti that they considered Miami Style Graffiti. MSG members didn’t feel that the established crews, who were still doing 80’s style New York graffiti at the time, represented their work so they started their own movement. Back then there wasn’t the internet to lean on for inspiration; there was break dance movies, zines and the competition. The older artists kept their techniques to themselves because they were threatened by the younger artists who were getting up everywhere and backing that up with first-rate productions. Now MSG is the established crew, but times have changed and now they feel part of the same community that once persecuted them.
