This program of music for percussion and electronics is centered around Christopher Cerrone’s 22-minute work Memory Palace. Scored for found and homemade percussion instruments ranging from tuned beer bottles to 17 planks of wood and accompanied by field recordings made by the composer, Memory Palace is a beautiful exploration of the sonic possibilities of percussion. The program also includes Celestial Sphere, a work for live marimba and pre-recorded marimbas written for me last year by David Crowell, Simple Songs of Birth and Return for mbira and electronics by Nathan Davis, 21 for marimba and electronics and Stop Speaking for snare drum and electronics, both by Andy Akiho and the world premiere of House Music by Juraj Kojs.

Praised for his “excellent” and “precisely attuned” performances by the New York Times, percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. He made his Kennedy Center debut in 2009 and later that year garnered a special prize created for him at the Salzburg International Marimba Competition. Last season, Mr. Rosenbaum joined the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program as only the second percussionist they have selected in their history. He has recorded for the Bridge, Innova and Naxos labels and is on the faculty of the Dwight School in Manhattan. For more information, please visit iandavidrosenbaum.com.

This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.

Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

About Pèrez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami was originally founded as the Center for Fine Arts, and was strictly an exhibiting organization with no collection of its own. In 1996 the museum was renamed Miami Art Museum and dedicated itself to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a special emphasis on art of the Americas. Since then, the collection has grown steadily across a range of media. The new Pérez Art Museum Miami in downtown Miami’s Museum Park strengthens the Museum’s role as a vital cultural and educational center. Opened as Pérez Art Museum Miami in recognition of a landmark gift of cash and art from Jorge M. Pérez —now valued at $40 million—the museum serves as a resource commensurate with Miami’s thriving community of artists, designers, collectors and arts-engaged public.

About Miami Broward Carnival
Held every year as a way to celebrate and share the Caribbean culture, the Miami Broward Carnival is heralded as one of South Florida’s top festivals, fostering community pride and civic involvement, and providing critical opportunities to the Caribbean people in South Florida to promote cultural exchange and build economic cooperation in the multi-cultural environment that is Miami. The Miami Broward Carnival will be held on October 12, 2014, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, Inc. featuring the rich, bold and colorful costumes of the over 20 masquerade bands, the iconic parade, and a concert. Miami Broward Carnival has cultivated a significant niche of Caribbean cultural heritage within South Florida for the past 30 years. MiamiBrowardCarnival.com and hash tag #MiamiCarnivalTurns30

Ayurveda is the Indian traditional holistic approach to life and health. It roots back more than 5,000 years and is believed by many to be the oldest and more comprehensive health and wellness care system. The central concept of Ayurveda is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between three fundamental bodily humors or doshas called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Every part of us is governed by these three doshas. Skin is no exception. Many skin conditions are thought to be caused by a dosha imbalance. If you know your skin dosha and which dosha is imbalanced, it will be easier to treat any skin conditions you have.

In this workshop, I will teach you the techniques to find out your skin dosha and help you detect any imbalances you may have. I can also help you simply maintain the health of your skin. I will then show you how to correct your skin issues with the help of Ayurvedic herbs and oils, diet, and lifestyle choices.
At the end of the workshop, all students will be able to make their own beauty products based on their skin type & challenges.

In this workshop you will:
1. Learn about the doshas and find out your dosha skin type
2. Learn the 7 beauty steps for healthy skin taught by Ayurveda
3. Learn to align your diet and lifestyle to your skin dosha or imbalances
4. Design your own dinacharya (daily routine) to enhance the health of your skin
5. Learn about the top Ayurvedic herbs for skincare, along with their uses and benefits
6. Formulate and take home authentic Ayurvedic skincare kit based on your dosha (1 herbal face pack, 1 scrub, and 1 cleanser)

Make your own Face & Body Moisturizing Cream

Over time, the sun and hot weather of Florida can really damage your skin, causing premature aging and wrinkles, along with dryness and burns. Skin needs to be nourished and moisturized. In this workshop you will learn to make your own cream to protect, restore, and heal your skin. Too many commercial creams and cosmetics have questionable or even toxic ingredients. When you make the cream yourself, you have clarity and confidence about what ingredients to use.

I will teach you about the benefits of ingredients used in formulating creams from hydrosols and oils to butters. We will go over the different techniques used to make creams (from heavy and deeply moisturizing to light, non-greasy and fast absorbing creams) with or without preservatives. Most importantly, you will get the confidence to make your own creams at home.

In this workshop you will:

1. Learn to treat specific skin issues, such as scars and wrinkles
2. Effectively use herbs in creams using tinctures & hydrosols
3. Learn to make anhydrous body creams (no water)
4. Learn to make creams without any emulsifiers
5. Learn about emulsifiers and emulsifying techniques
6. Learn the properties and benefits of oils, butters, & hydrosols
7. Learn to make water decoctions and medicinally infused oils
8. Make and take home: 1 body moisturizing cream adapted to your skin type and 1 make up remover lotion

Arts: Concrete Porn ~ Buildings & Bridges Fine Art Photography Series Released by Artist Ted VanCleave

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Concrete Porn ~ Buildings & Bridges” Fine Art Photography Series Released by Artist Ted VanCleave

Miami, Florida, September 17, 2014 – Internationally collected artist Ted VanCleave today released his new fine art photography series “Concrete Porn ~ Buildings & Bridges.” This new series is an homage to the often underappreciated building medium, concrete.

“My love of concrete architecture began when I visited the Pantheon in Rome. I was in awe of the beautiful, massive concrete dome which is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, two thousand years after it was built.”

VanCleave’s new series provides an artist’s perspective of many notable yet overlooked concrete buildings and bridges in Los Angeles and Miami. Some of the images capture mundane utilitarian structures never meant to be appreciated as works of art. Other images included in the series are of beautifully elegant structures that pushed the limits of what we think of as concrete. Rarely painted, concrete exteriors stand up well to the elements and age beautifully.

“People often think of concrete buildings as being dark and foreboding but that’s rarely the case outside of parking structures. In this photo series I chose to create the images in a way that draws attention to the wood grain and other textures permanently embedded in the concrete during it’s construction, which I find intriguing and appealing. My favorite is the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena, California. I consider it the Mona Lisa of concrete structures.”

Concrete Porn ~ Buildings and Bridges images are available as limited edition digital silver prints or as prints on aluminum through VanCleave’s web site.

About Ted VanCleave:
Ted VanCleave is a photographer, sculpture and painter. His work is collected internationally and he is represented by galleries from San Francisco to Switzerland. His highly stylized photographs, innovative sculptures and vibrant abstract paintings offer an exciting new approach to these popular media. Ted is best known for his Behind the Hollywood Sign photo series released in 2012

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – True Hair Miami

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-True-Hair-Miami-Title

Somewhere in the pages of the Miami girl’s fashion bible is a passage that reads: “Thou shalt never be fully dressed without full hair and make-up”. So the Miami gods created True Hair Miami Salon. The brainchild of extension queen Ellie Menocal, the chic Midtown salon is a one-stop-shop for all things hair and beauty. The service menu includes hair cuts and treatments, make-up, bronzing and, of course, Ellie’s famous long-lasting high quality extensions.

Recently we stopped by the salon to meet the True Hair Miami team and to get ready before our “Day at the Races”. We got our hair and make-up done and even added a purple extension to spice up our look. The team did an incredible job of making us look fabulous while meeting our natural make-up, low maintenance people demands. Most of all, they made the experience incredibly fun.

Of course, there was bubbly and, of course, there were cupcakes, but the pièce de resistance was the people. Ellie has assembled a team of professionals that are friendly, knowledgeable, and have some incredible stories to tell. Our time in Gustavo’s styling chair was therapeutic and educational. He expertly balanced the conversation between sharing stories of his enviable life, giving us much-needed advice, and answering our most pressing beauty questions. It is a testament to his skills that he did so while taking our hair from bedhead to bombshell.

We will let the photos from our visit speak for themselves. A huge thanks to Ellie for the hospitality, Gustavo for our hair, Vanessa for our make-up, and Robin for the photos. You guys rock! Continue reading “#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – True Hair Miami”

Philanthropy: New $5 Million Knight Cities Challenge Opens October 1, 2014

PRESS RELEASE

knightcities

Knight Cities Challenge offers $5 million for innovations that make cities more successful
Ideas should benefit one or more of 26 Knight communities

MIAMI — Sept. 16, 2014 — The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation today announced the Knight Cities Challenge, seeking new ideas that make the 26 communities where Knight invests more vibrant places to live and work. The challenge is offering $5 million for innovative projects that answer the question: What’s your best idea to make cities more successful?

It will launch on Oct. 1, with applications being accepted until Nov. 14. The challenge is open to innovators of all types: architects, activists, artists, city planners, entrepreneurs, students, educators, city officials, as well as governments and organizations. The initial application, which will be available starting Oct. 1 at knightcities.org consists of just two questions and is designed to be simple to encourage a diversity of applications.

The Knight Cities Challenge is a new initiative, complementing the Knight News Challenge and Knight Arts Challenge. There are only two rules for the challenge:

1) A submission may come from anywhere, but the project must take place in or benefit one or more of 26 Knight communities.

2) The idea should focus on one or all of three key drivers of city success: attracting and retaining talent, expanding economic opportunity, and creating a culture of civic engagement.

“We are looking for ideas from innovators who will take hold of the future of our cities,” said Carol Coletta, Knight Foundation vice president for community and national initiatives. “To succeed cities need talented people who can contribute to their growth, new opportunities that are open to all, and ways to engage people to spur connections and civic action.”

We are looking to discover new civic innovations and to be surprised by ideas not prescribe them, but we’re encouraging ideas that support key drivers of city success:
Talent: Ideas that help cities attract and keep the best and brightest
Opportunity: Ideas that create economic prospects and break down divides
Engagement: Ideas that spur connection and civic involvement

As a way to encourage ideas, Knight Foundation will host Community Q&A sessions in each of the 26 Knight communities. The events, starting in October, will offer tips on preparing applications, information on the challenge, and a chance to talk to Knight staff on how to craft a great submission. Check our blog and follow us on Twitter @knightfdn #knightcities for scheduling updates.

Virtual office hours for those who want to learn more are also being held from 3 to 4 p.m. ET Oct. 1. Participants can access the meeting online (https://bluejeans.com/448711858/browser using ID 448 711 858), or participate via phone at 1-888-240-2560. More dates for virtual office hours will be announced soon.

The 26 Knight cities include eight communities that have a resident program director: Akron, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit; Macon, Ga.; Miami; Philadelphia; St. Paul, Minn.; and San Jose, Calif. In 18 cities community foundations guide: Aberdeen, S.D.; Biloxi, Miss.; Boulder, Colo.; Bradenton, Fla.; Columbia, S.C.; Columbus, Ga.; Duluth, Minn.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Gary, Ind.; Grand Forks, N.D.; Lexington, Ky.; Long Beach, Calif.; Milledgeville, Ga.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Palm Beach County, Fla.; State College, Penn.; Tallahassee, Fla.; and Wichita, Kan.

About the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

Product / Neat Ice Kit

Studio Neat Ice Kit Do you have ice envy? Do you walk into your favorite watering hole and think, “wow, why doesn’t my ice at home look that clear and perfect?”

We certainly do. Along with 2,274 other backers on Kickstarter.

Luckily for us, we’ve found a solution to that problem with the Neat Ice Kit. The guys that created this kit figured out a way to freeze the ice in a special insulated silicon cube that allows the air and impurities to sink to the bottom and the clear water rise to the top. This way when the cube is made the upper half is perfectly clear — like you see in high-end bars and dining establishments — while the bottom holds all the impurities. You then split the ice with the provided ice chisel and mallet to break the clear off ice from the foggy side.

Don’t waste the “impure” ice however, it’s still perfectly good it is just better suited for drinks that are shaken.

The kit shows you how to create ice cubes for any drink your making. Use a the whole ice cube for a drink that requires slow melting like an Old Fashioned, cube the ice into quarters for a drink like a Tom Collins, or smash it with the provided canvas “Lewis” bag and make crushed ice. Not only is that a fun technique to show off to your friends, but it’s guaranteed to help you get some pent up anger out.

The Neat Ice Kits are sold online here http://www.studioneat.com/products/neaticekit#product-hero for $55 for a one mold kit and $75 for a two mold kit.

Want to make some perfect clear ice for yourself? Enter our Neat Ice Kit giveaway below. One lucky reader will win a kit of their own courtesy of Studio Neat. Winner will be announced Monday, the 22nd.

The Library is Important to All of Us – An Open Letter from John Quick

This is an open letter to the community by John Quick, President of Friends of the Miami-Dade Libraries

Most of us were introduced to libraries as children by our teachers or parents a source for wonderful stories and information for school projects.

Over the years, public libraries were converted into community centers with meeting rooms, organized story time, academic tutoring and computer stations with free Internet connectivity, and computer literacy training for seniors. They also became a source for early literacy support for parents with small children, digital-media learning centers; free electronic books, audio books for the visually impaired and the disabled, door to door service for the infirmed, reading instruction for illiterate adults, and so much more.

But over the past few years, our libraries have been stripped of almost every public service. Operating hours have been cut and they are no longer open 7 days a week.
As a father of two young children, ages 4 and 2, I expected libraries to always be available for my kids and for future generations. I never realized we would have to fight to keep them open and available for future generations.

Libraries are not a relic of the past. They are critical to a vibrant, successful community with an educated workforce.

Please tell your Miami-Dade County Commissioner that libraries are central to the future of Miami-Dade County and let him or her know before the critical Thursday, September 18 County Commission meeting that will decide the future of our libraries.

Visit www.savemdpls.org to find out how you can make a difference.

Sway Away and Convoluted Shape by Jamilah Sabur Opening Reception  at The Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, September 12, 2014.

Sway Away exhibition is in the Audrey Love Gallery from September 10 – September 28.  “This show will feature two- and three- dimensional artworks representing the artists’ interpretation and capture of movement. Kinetic and site specific projects will be the focus creating a direct dialogue between science, physics and the arts.”

Convoluted Shape by Jamilah Sabur is in the Swenson Gallery from September 10 – October 18. “This exhibition studies the interdisciplinary uses of the body as a vehicle for expression. Jamilah Sabur opens the exhibition on September 12th with a multi-channel video installation and performance encompassing the interplay of inwardness and the secondariness of the audience through movement, concealment, obstacles and physical limitations as well as spontaneous and imperfect, sometimes comic, unrehearsed movements. The results illustrate the perverse rule the artist seems to have discovered: the less she can see, the more we, an audience, look.”

The Bakehouse Art Complex Mission:
“Enable and encourage artistic creativity through diversity and collaboration.  By providing affordable studio spaces for juried emerging and mid-career artists
Providing exhibition opportunities, educational and artist advancement programming, and common workshop spaces. Serve as a cultural hub providing a venue for performance and critical thought in Miami’s historic art deco bakery”

Robin Korth Talks Soul on the Run and How We Can Start Again to Live Our Lives At Any Age

It really sucks to come in second in your own life. It sucks even more to think this is okay.
When God knocks, it isn’t such a great idea to keep saying, “Wait a minute.”
“Change” is a word that does its best work wearing a sweat suit.

Miami native Robin Korth will debut her book Soul on the Run, Saturday September 20, 7:00 pm, at Books & Books in Coral Gables.

Soul on the Run is the gut-wrenchingly honest portrayal of one woman’s search for herself, and her refusal to continue playing the game of “let’s pretend everything is okay.” What’s more, it reminds us—when we are honest with ourselves—we can start life over at any age. Korth’s words are pithy and raw, sometimes almost brutal, and often just plain funny. There are common sense insights into doing life and a sometimes mystic questing into the hidden avenues of the human heart. To read this book is to journey into your own heart and spirit. The questions and comments of this woman’s piercing search for joy and meaning will spark your own. You cannot read this book without becoming a participant in your own soul’s journey towards life.

This visual story is one that has not yet been told. Not because there is no storyteller to tell it, but because it exists only in fragments each assuming its own autonomous existence removed from the constraints of mainstream history.

THIRD SPACE Inventing the Possible is the story of visual artists who defy their otherness and enter the realm of 21st century aesthetics not only to lay their historic claim on it, but also to challenge the framework which defines and polices its boundaries. This exhibition engages Miami artists in their articulations of the lines of continuities. What comes out is that we do not cease to be related simply because separated by race, nationality or color.

Breast cancer is manageable and preventable. The key is early detection. However, studies have shown that minority women in Miami-Dade are less likely to seek preventative breast health care.

The Mammography Art Initiative (MAI) was established at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU in 2011 to address the need for better access to affordable breast health services and breast health education for underserved women in Miami. Through the fundraising efforts of the previous two years’ art shows, we have been able to raise over $50,000 in funds and services to sponsor mammograms and follow up care for hundreds of women all over Miami-Dade County.

The MAI has been inundated with support from local artist and the healthcare community. We are continually expanding our program and hope to close this health disparity gap in the near future.

In a continuous effort to bring to South Florida the most iconic ballets of the Russian repertoire, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents a Tribute to Diaghilev, the art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes, with three splendid works that translate the spirit of the era.
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida joins the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s controversial piece The Rite of Spring, with a new version choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director, Vladimir Issaev and performed by their magnificent dancers. The production utilizes diverse and unique special effects as moving projections by DMD Studios, with costumes decorated by artist Maria Rivas.
The program also includes Le Spectre de la Rose, a beautiful short ballet about a young woman who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball, based on a poem by Théophile Gautier. The dances were designed by Michel Fokine and the music is Hector Berlioz’s 1841 orchestration of Carl Maria von Weber’s piano music called “Invitation to the Dance”. Léon Bakst designed the original sets and costumes, which are the basis for Arts Ballet’s designs that have already been recreated at the ateliers of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia.
Finally, the show includes the ballet Petrouchka. Audiences will enjoy this very unique production with music of Stravinsky, costume designs by Jorge Gallardo, and choreography by Issaev himself. The Ballet in one act is set in the middle of a Russian Fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, the Ballerina and, the Moor. All three puppets are commanded by the Charlatan, a sinister, bearded puppeteer and magician, who gives the puppets human emotions.
With this programs Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will introduce dancers Hirofumi Ikeuchi y Saori Morioka y Takayuki Asai and Lilian Hill performing the leading roles, accompanied by local and international dancers.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – A Jetsetter’s Guide to Chic Travel

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-A-Jetsetters-Guide-To-Chic-Travel

Miami is the gateway to the world, which is why the Miami lifestyle incorporates travel seamlessly. But, with great power comes great responsibility – in our case, to represent Miami worldwide by looking nothing short of chic. Lucky for you, we love to travel and, through trial and error, we have perfected an outfit that works for planes, trains, and automobiles. The key to dressing for travel is to think comfortable and versatile. As a final touch, we like to incorporate a token that reminds us of home.

We’ve put together a travel look that exemplifies all of these essentials. The jeans and sneakers scream comfort, while the leather jacket and aviators keep you flawless from Miami’s sunny shores to cooler climates. The large structured purse adds a pop of color and is ideal for carrying travel necessities like headphones, snacks, and your passport. Finally, a sleek baseball cap helps to disguise the signs of travel. As an added bonus, this Miami Marlins cap from Fanatics acts as a subtle reminder of our beautiful city no matter where you find yourself.

The #ThankYouMiami team is gearing up for four months of travel around the U.S. and you bet we’re going to look chic. Now you’re ready to do the same! You’re welcome, Miami.

Join us at the with others all over the world to discuss some of the biggest challenges we are facing. Our Miami Meetup will focus on the Social Good Summit theme, #2030NOW, which asks how the use of new technology and new media is shaping creative solutions for solving the main challenges our community faces, thus shaping a better future.

Our goal for the Social Good Summit Miami is to bring together community thought leaders focused on social good, joining the voices and ideas of people around the world. We want to highlight all the good that is already being done here in Southern Florida, tackle challenging questions, exchange information and rally behind the global hashtag, #2030NOW and the local hashtag, #SGSMiami.

Amazing insight from local changemakers in 2013 brought to light issues that we face in Miami. We explored topics ranging from the danger of rising sea levels; how civic innovation leads to economic empowerment; how millennials are creating tools to shape future generations; to practical ways of using technology to bridge the gap between activism and problem-solving. These discussions are particularly important as decision makers map out the next set of overarching goals our community should set.

We cannot accomplish these task alone. We need you. Be a part of one of the biggest, most global and most powerful conversations the world has ever seen.

PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS Acknowledge National Childhood Obesity Month With Fitness Event

Miami, Fl-September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to the health of America’s children and decreasing its prevalence in the United States. PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS are encouraging young people to make a commitment to their health and wipe out America’s obesity epidemic. They will host a family inspired fitness event on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9am-10:30am. JEMKIDS will conduct their weekly fitness class for kids ages 6-13 from 9am-10am. The classes develop overall strength, improve posture, movement & coordination while enhancing balance as well as other motor skills. Different games and challenges are employed to teach children these skills in a way that is fun & engaging. Parents will have the opportunity to get a fitness assessment by PowerFit Studio’s trainer John and Vivian Rice and hear a talk by PowerFit Studios’ celebrated fitness guru, Shirlee Fernandez. Difference Makers will provide complimentary glucose and blood pressure checks. Refreshments will be sponsored by Rozalyn H. Paschal Pediatrics. PowerFit Studios is located inside the Opera Tower at 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Fl 33132. The cost of the event is $10.00. Parking is $2.50 with validation. Powerfit Studios will also provided registered attendees with a gift card offering 2 Zumba classes, 2 Latin Ballroom dance classes, 20% off spa and slimming treatments and two Power Plate sessions. Complimentary chair massages and aromatherapy will also be provided.

“The growing rate of childhood obesity in our country is alarming,” said Shirlee Fernandez, Founder and Owner, PowerFit Studios, Miami. “Childhood obesity is entirely preventable. We are here to provide ways that encourage healthy eating and fitness habits.”

Jonerik Murphy — the founder of JEMKIDS — talked about the event saying, “Being a physically fit child isn’t about being a great athlete, it is about being a healthy person. If a child has poor posture, it will affect everything from self esteem to performance in school to long term health issues.  Therefore, children should be physically active early on to create strong, healthy bodies.” Jonerik has been certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) as a Youth Fitness Specialist (Level 2). He has a passion to help kids be healthy and move the best they can, whether it is for life’s everyday activities or for sports. JEMKIDS motto is: Infusing Fitness with Fun!

About PowerFit Studios
Built on the scientific foundation of whole-body vibration, the Power Plate at Power Fit Studios can grant bodies such benefits as improved muscle tone, increased circulation, and higher bone density. When combined with a

reasonable amount of rocket fuel, session spent atop the platform can accelerate users fitness goals. The private
studio also supports clients’ inner and outer well-being with more traditional approaches, including Zumba, and Latin Ballroom dance,as well as a range of soothing spa services. Power Fit Studios also offers specialty classes in aromatherapy, chakra-meditation and vision board workshops.

About JEMKIDS
JEMKIDS was created by Jonerik Murphy to help develop a culture of physically fit children at a time when the statistics show that the obesity rate is increasing throughout the youth population. While many schools are reducing or eliminating physical education programs to dedicate more time to classroom work, something is being left out: Physical literacy. Simply put, today’s youth spend too much time sitting and not moving. No one can argue that improving performance in school isn’t important. However, it should not come at the expense of physical development.
In this advanced technological age, more children are spending time playing video games than playing outside. JEMKIDS’ programs were created to address this lack of physical activity. As children mature, there is a window of opportunity to develop motor skills and movement skills most efficiently. If children are inactive during the body’s maturation process, than these skills will either be limited or not developed at all. Consequently, there are short term (children being overweight) and long term effects (increased medical expenses and complications as adults). www.jemkids.com

Batch Gastropub: New Fall Menu Excites by Betty Alvarez

The first time I’ve been to Batch Gastropub was to celebrate my friend’s birthday party. When I first went in, I was amazed about how casual but comfortable the restaurant is. It’s a gastropub where the menu was approachable and there was an expansive drink list. We celebrated during their happy hour and the placed got packed as soon as I got there. My girlfriends and I indulged in their wonderful happy hour menu and their regular menu. A memorable time for all!

This time around, I got the opportunity to preview their Autumn menu which I was excited to taste. I could not wait for the delectable surprises that this place that had brought my tastebuds into action.

First of all, I was greeted with a cornucopia of cocktail samplings. The one that stood out is the Green Pepper Mojito as I thought it was going to be super sweet but to my surprise it wasn’t. I could taste the green pepper flavor in my mouth but it was not overwhelming to sour my taste of the food that I was about to sample.

Batch gave us two types of menus to choose from for our tasting one that had the house made meatballs or the General Tso’s Cauliflower dish as the starter.

We began with a snack: Salmon Crudo comprised with the House Cured Faroe Island Salmon on top of Florida peaches with Truffled vinaigrette and maldon salt. This small snack was a different experience as I never tasted a salmon on top of a slice of peach before. The salmon taste came to my tastebuds first and then complimented it with the sweet peach infusing both into a nice sweet and delectable light bite.

Then came the starters, the house made meatballs of duck, short rib and pork belly on a sweet potato puree and Serrano ham gave me great delight. The meatballs were warm, soft to chew and the sweet potato puree gave it a good additive to my palate.

The next starter was the Tuna Poke-Peanut Butter “Crumble”, wonton, scallion, and crispy ginger. Although I did not taste the peanut butter but the scallion and the crispy ginger is what stood out of my mind. It was delicious.

For the veggies part, a Batch Kale Salad was served. Now I never had Kale in my life so I was delighted and nervous at the same time in trying this salad comprised of raw kale, hearts of palm, peanuts, strawberry vinaigrette, and parmesan. To my surprise, I loved it. The kale was not overpowering and the vinaigrette made everything come together. Definitely will have to try that salad again next time I go to Batch Gastropub.

Now the main course: The Drunken Short Rib which is a whiskey braised short rib with Vanilla and Sour Mash, Creamy polenta and Cinammon roasted carrots on the side. The meat was so tender that it was falling out of the bone. I could taste the whisky a bit but my memory was the warm, soft, juicy meat that these ribs had. Other than the cinnamon that covered the carrots it was also mixed with a coffee flavored sauce which had a distinctive taste.

The sweets that culminated our experience is the Carnival Donuts-fried dough, powdered sugar, with a warm chocolate ganache and Kahlua syrup. Now these round donuts were the best and my favorite was dumping it in the Kahlua syrup rather than the chocolate ganache. It was so taste was so much richer to my palate.
A very sweet experience to end this preview tasting.

All in all, I can’t wait for this autumn menu to be announced to the general public as Batch Gastropub wants to exemplify the farm to table concept as it is healthier option for everyone but with full of taste. Kudos to Batch Gastropub!

Celebrate the opening of Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico with live music by Alma Tropicalia and a waterfront bar on the terrace. Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.
The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).

This year the Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee Inc.(MBOCHC) will present their Panorama Steel Band competition on Friday, October 10, 2014 at Central Broward Regional Park from 6pm to 11pm. Silver Stars USA Steel Orchestra is the reigning 2013 Band of the Year. This year, the list of bands competing for the title of Miami Broward Carnival Steel Band Of The Year includes: Silvers Stars USA Steel Orchestra, Pantastics Steel Band, Lauderhill Steel, Resurrection Sound, Karibbean Knights Steel Orchestra and Steel Away Steel Drum Ensemble. Panorama is a favorite of many pan-lovers who will enjoy the melodic, rhythmic and soothing sounds of a music art form that is the heartbeat of the Carnival culture. The National Instrument of Trinidad & Tobago is the Steel Drum and is the only new instrument invented in the 20th Century, Although a part of Carnival for many years, the first Panorama was not held in T&T until 1963. In Miami the steel bands were always a part of Carnival and bands travelled from Orlando and even from New York, to participate in Carnival. The MBOCHC is committed to preserving this rich Caribbean tradition within the blueprint of #MiamiBrowardCarnival.

panorama20135“Pan is to carnival like water is to fish; it’s a survival thing. As they say, it’s the last created musical instrument that brings pride and joy to a nation. Its like reggae to Jamaica, classical music to Europeans; it is deeply rooted in our culture and the world is better for it.” Sydney Roberts, Vice Chair for Miami Broward Carnival.

“The main focus of Silver Stars USA Steel Orchestra is to introduce the art of playing the steel drums to the youth of South Florida and to broaden the exposure of steel drums in the United States of America. We have been able to expose our repertoire at many functions, such as Mrs. Michelle Obama’s grass roots rally in Ft Lauderdale and we are proud of our Miami Broward Carnival Steel Band Of The Year for the past two years.” stated Errol Christian.

Tickets for loitering will not be issued here while this talented and playful street art team transforms the west-facing wall of 1909 Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood in just a few weeks. The community welcomes Chaz and Bob Gibson, aka “The London Police”, to the neighborhood as the creators of the 12th DHMP wall mural. The community is looking forward to seeing the artful enhancement this British duo has in store. All are invited to join a “Live Painting Performance” with TLP at the mural site on Saturday night, September 27th from 7-10pm.

The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is successfully rounding its second year with an impressive roster of artists including Daniel Fila a.k.a. “Krave”, David “Lebo” LeBatard, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Edward Mendieta, Ruben Ubiera, 2alas, Evoca1, Michelle Weinberg and Tati Suarez, all who have contributed amazing work to the community. Selected by a review committee, the project invites artists whose mural proposals promote health, happiness, and well-being.

When asked about the mural he and his partner are gearing up to begin next month, artist Chaz Gibson tells us, “We always try to project a positive theme in our pieces. Our signature characters have happy faces and are depicted doing everyday things in the world they live in. In this particular piece one of our characters is making adjustments to the aquarium he is looking after. As we are near the sea we threaded an aquatic theme with science and nature with an overall moral of looking after each other.”
The duo has clearly come up with a mural concept that speaks to Hollywood and incorporates attributes that this community can connect with. “We love the idea of the aquatic theme and the fact that the mural will promote togetherness. That is what Hollywood is all about and The London Police really get that about us”, remarks Lisa Liotta, Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Operations Manager.
Since inception, The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project has garnered the attention of locals, visitors and art enthusiasts alike. Giselle Perez, a realtor in Miami comments on her experience, “The live mural painting events are really quite awesome to attend! No two events have been similar and each artist brings their own vibe. My friends and I come up from Miami for a bite to eat at one of the eclectic eateries on Hollywood Blvd. or Harrison Street. We pop into a few of the crafty boutiques and art galleries and really enjoy walking the streets to see the mural walls throughout the downtown. Often times, the artists have added or change something, which is always a nice surprise! The live mural performances are really fun to attend. Meeting new people who have an appreciation for art and community is always a good time!”

Key-Biscayne — October 30-November 2, 2014
One of the longest running Ballroom Dance Competitions in the United States, The Grand National Championships, celebrates its 44th year, October 30-November 2, 2014
This prestigious competition began in Miami Beach in 1970.

In addition to its 44-year tradition of bringing together Amateur and Pro-Am competitors from across the United States to vie for the title of Grand National Champion, this year’s competition will feature The Grand National Professional Championships. The top ranked professional couples In the United States & World Championship events will compete for this Grand National Title.

“We’re very excited to launch the new championship title for professional dancers of American Ballroom, said Cassandra Schneider, co-organizer of the NDCA Sanctioned 44th Grand National Dancesport Championships.”Ours is the only Sanctioned Championship Ballroom Dance competition held in South Florida.”

The popularity of television shows like “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” proves that ballroom dance has captured the passionate attention and the hearts of millions. The Grand National Championships, which hosts many of the top dancers in the U.S., is world famous for its exciting dance shows and hospitality.

Running the Miami event for the twelfth year, Cassandra and Peter Schneider–themselves world-class dancers, judges and promoters–expect more than 200 competitors this year. Ballroom dancing is considered both a fine art and a sport. Contestants come from all walks of life, and range from 6 to over 90 years of age. Many older dancers enjoy this discipline for health reasons as well as for the pure joy of dancing. This year’s dancers will compete in one or more events featuring various dances.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. The communion of words, lines, or shapes meld on canvas into one-becoming the allusion of my personal reality.
My art consist of abstract drawings in pencil, color, acrylic and ink. My anxious imagination has been inspired by nostalgic memories of my poignant life events, native metropolis of San Juan Puerto Rico and South Florida.

About David Martins
I was born in Boston, then raised mostly in Miami.I am currently in school to become an anthropologist with my main focus on shamanic studies. I chose this path because I love to learn and teach and therefore enjoy studying the original teachers; the shamans from around the world. I have been drawing, sketching, and painting my whole life. My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. My pieces are reflections of symbols and archetypes that connect us all. Creations that speak to the subconscious mind as well as the vibratory senses

Fridge Art Fair Returns to Little Havana for Art Basel Miami Week
Fridge Art Fair is pleased to announce that its second Miami edition will take place at the 3rd Street Garage Artspace, 300 SW 12th Avenue, Miami with additional presentations at a legendary Little Havana location, Ball & Chain (http://www.ballandchainmiami.com/) December 4 – 9, 2014, thanks to major sponsorship by the Barlington Group and returning media sponsor Arte Fuse. Once again, Founding Director Eric Ginsburg, a noted painter in his own right (mainly for his soulful portraits of dogs), will lead the Fridge team.

“People should not be afraid to go and see art, and it should not cost a fortune,’ said Ginsburg. “I want people to be happy, we want everyone from all walks of life to come to this fair and say, ‘that was really cool!’” In that spirit he has subtitled this edition “De Staatliches Bauhaus Rijpe Mango Editie,” explaining:
“In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha holds a perfectly ripe mango as a symbol of the potential for perfection. The mango is a tropical icon, a fruit of love. Pure, but sexy…like Miami!”

Cara Hunter Viera of Fridge will produce the Fair and NYC based curator, writer and dealer Linda DiGusta, co-director of Fridge 2014 in New York, stays on the team as curatorial consultant.

Fridge Art Fair was born on New York’s Lower East Side in May 2013, making it’s debut – under the tagline “Can you fit into the Fridge?” — at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The inaugural Miami show was presented at the somewhat more spacious Pax, on Calle Ocho. On March 31st 2014, Fridge was displaced from its expanded Lower East Side venue by the Dept. of Buildings closure of the historic and beloved Angel Orensanz Center, but was able to rebound and open as planned on May 8 and present an innovative, successful fair (including large-scale installations, a video lounge curated by Jeanne Wilkinson, and a Ferrari, presented by Dorian Grey Gallery, painted by John “Crash” Matos) at a 7,000 sf waterfront venue in Long Island City thanks to major sponsorship from Plaxall. With a loyal following of presenting galleries, organizations and artists, Fridge is growing while retaining its character as an intimate, accessible and enjoyable event.

Barlington Group was founded by Bill Fuller and Martin Pinilla II, in Miami Florida in June 2004, as an urban development company committed to revitalizing neighborhoods within Miami’s urban core. Since inception, Barlington Group has acquired, developed, and managed commercial projects with a value exceeding $50 million. Projects have focused on asset repositioning, ranging from multi-family, retail, office, and mixed use buildings. The company currently operates 100 plus multi-family units and more than 400,000 sqft of retail and office space in 13 retail and mixed-use centers. The company is also invested in retail, entertainment, and hospitality ventures. The core mission of the company is to have fun creating unique places to live, work, and play.http://www.barlingtongroup.com/company.html

Arte Fuse is a contemporary online art magazine featuring news, openings, events, galleries, studio visits and art reviews. Visiting as many shows and artist’s studios as possible, the publication offers readers a curated perspective of the art scene with special focus on New York. The magazine was founded by Jamie Martinez, Publisher and CEO, in 2008. http://artefuse.com/

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – A “Premios Tu Mundo” Fashion Emergency

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Premios-Tu-Mundo-Title

Dear Forever 21 on Lincoln Road,

Thank you for saving us last week from an unexpected fashion emergency. “Fashiongate 2014” began was we were getting ready for the VIP preview of Telemundo’s much-anticipated Premios Tu Mundo at the America Airlines Arena. We channeled our Miami chic selves to put together an outfit perfect for an evening of pampering by TNT Agency, mingling with the award nominees, and warming up the blue carpet. We opted for bright colors, high heels, and lots of white. Unfortunately, as the universe would have it, our white items were marred by mysterious stains thirty minutes before our scheduled arrival.

That’s when you, our local purveyor of “fast fashion” rose to the occasion with a flurry of viable options to complete our blue carpet-ready attire, while keeping our husbands from having a spending-induced conniption. Even better, the resulting OOTD was a resounding success – it was the perfect compliment to the fabulous hair and make-up look the girls from TNT Agency gave us and to the eye-catching Charlie Lapson Collection jewels we tried on that night. You may not be Miami-bred, but you sure have Miami’s back. And for that, we thank you.

Love you, mean it.
The #ThankYouMiami team.

Aside from educational talks, there will be fun activities such as pie-in-the-face throwing contest from 12:15pm to 1:30pm (you may purchase the pies at a silent auction) September 15 & 19 in front of Dr. Wilde’s World. On September 20 & 21, enjoy goodies at a bake sale/lemonade table in front of our Sumatran tiger exhibit where you can also purchase buttons and get your face painted . All money raised will support the Tiger Conservation Campaign. So come on out and have a roaring good time!
