Did you know there are fewer than 3,500 tigers left in the wild and their numbers are rapidly declining as a result of poaching and habitat destruction? Did you know there are nine sub-species of tigers and three of those have become extinct in the last 80 years and the rest are critically endangered? These are just some of the tiger facts you will learn during Tiger Awareness Week at Zoo Miami September 15 – 21. Aside from educational talks, there will be fun activities such as pie-in-the-face throwing contest from 12:15pm to 1:30pm (you may purchase the pies at a silent auction) September 15 & 19 in front of Dr. Wilde’s World. On September 20 & 21, enjoy goodies at a bake sale/lemonade table in front of our Sumatran tiger exhibit where you can also purchase buttons and get your face painted . All money raised will support the Tiger Conservation Campaign. So come on out and have a roaring good time!

Miami DWNTWN Art Days
September 19-21, All Day
dwntwnartdays Downtown Miami
Website
Facebook

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub
located at MCAD, 100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132
The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!
The hub is the place to…
…find someone to help you navigate through the vast amount of things to do.
…start most walking and bike tours.
…be creative and paint your own unique t-shirt.
…hang out and connect with your friends on social media.
…find people to welcome you to Downtown Miami.

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown
As a guideline, here is a schedule for the weekend:
Thursday: Media/VIP Preview of the Fringe and Art Days
Friday: School tours/ Exhibitions openings/ post -work cocktail activities
Saturday: Museum day; art tours and exhibitions
Sunday: Cultural activities/bike tours

About -UOM-
UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. The communion of words, lines, or shapes meld on canvas into one-becoming the allusion of my personal reality.
My art consist of abstract drawings in pencil, color, acrylic and ink. My anxious imagination has been inspired by nostalgic memories of my poignant life events, native metropolis of San Juan Puerto Rico and South Florida.

About Marcelo Salup
1. Began professionally as a concert photographer for Vibraciones magazine in Madrid, Spain.
2. Switched to international advertising and lived in half a dozen cities: Madrid, London, New York, Mexico City, Santo Domingo, San Juan and Buenos Aires
3. Specialize in portrait photography

About David Martins
I was born in Boston, then raised mostly in Miami.I am currently in school to become an anthropologist with my main focus on shamanic studies. I chose this path because I love to learn and teach and therefore enjoy studying the original teachers; the shamans from around the world. I have been drawing, sketching, and painting my whole life. My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. My pieces are reflections of symbols and archetypes that connect us all. Creations that speak to the subconscious mind as well as the vibratory senses

Miami is known for its beautiful scenery and beaches. Virginia Key Beach is an oasis of lush tropical landscape, wildlife and home to various marine science explorations. With the support of volunteers, like prominent environmental activist David Doebler, and program partners like ECOMB, the community is rallying and responding to the real need for preservation of our most delicate natural resources.

In an effort to educate, empower and inspire, power publicist Frances Alban and prominent blogger Jesus Rojas Torres are organizing this volunteer beach-clean-up. All Miami residents are encouraged to participate and show their support for keeping Key Biscayne beautiful, healthy and safe for swimming and recreation.

Organizers will provide garbage bags and other materials needed to collect litter. Volunteers will receive a complimentary continental breakfast and beverages courtesy of Winn-Dixie Key Biscayne. It is recommended that volunteers wear a hat, sneakers or “aqua-shoes”, and bring sunscreen and their own refillable water bottle. This is a great opportunity to earn community service hours.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – 7 Tips to Step Up Your Summer Style

The end of summer is looming. As of tomorrow, we have officially one month to make a lasting impression this summer season. Lucky for us, we paid attention to the runways and picked up 7 tips for stepping up your summer style. Lucky for you, we believe that “sharing is caring”.

1. Embrace mesh. This year, mesh has nestled its way into the summer runways and into our hearts. We’ve spotted it playing a supporting role, like in the cap sleeves of the Mirame Swim Ellen Bikini below, and center stage as both tops and dresses. Which role it plays is up to you but, trust us, you need to embrace it.

September is Hunger Action Month. In response, Miami will host a summit to end hunger in South Florida, where 900,000 people go hungry. The event, “What Will it Take to End Hunger” will bring together business leaders, students, government officials, nonprofit organizations, and other concerned citizens to engage in an interactive think-tank discussion on how to end hunger.

The hunger epidemic affects one in four people and is growing rapidly. Florida ranks 12th in the US for food insecurity. Jody Johnson, co-founder of ActionCOACH Team Sage, has teamed up with Feeding South Florida, Joshua’s Heart, the Miami Foundation, Sisters of Charity, city commissioners, and economists to create an event to help end this continuous socio-economic problem.

The event is free of charge and is open to anyone who wants to contribute to ending hunger in South Florida.

This year, Family Resource Center will present three awards to prestigious leaders who have made a difference in the lives of foster children.

Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho, Miami-Dade County’s Superintendent of Schools, will be this year’s recipient of the Children’s Hero Award in recognition of his provision of critical educational resources and services to children in the foster care system, including the establishment of a data sharing project between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the local Foster Care Agencies.

In acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution as a Family Resource Center board member, as well as his ongoing commitment to the agency, Mr. Mario Trueba, CEO and President of Sabadell United Bank, N.A., will receive this year’s Children’s Sustainer Award.

And for the first time, Family Resource Center is pleased to present the Child Welfare Legacy Award. It will be bestowed upon Mr. Lawrence S. Notably, Mr. Hurwit created the Hurwit Children’s Emergency Shelter for those most vulnerable and in need of a safe haven.

From 6:30-7:30 you can sip on a signature Children’s Hero Cocktail while you check out a one-of-a-kind silent auction called Trips, Travel & Leisure. This auction will feature an amazing assortment of getaways here and abroad as well as sports tickets, spa pampering and fine dining. Make sure to snag something fabulous. From there, enjoy an elegant three course dinner and a chance to win something big during the live auction.

All proceeds generated from the evening will go towards providing hundreds of newborns, toddlers, adolescents and teens with the shelter, food, medical and mental health care that they need due to experiencing abuse, neglect and abandonment by their parents.

Talk About it Tuesday: Protest Leads to Eight Arrests

Activists Protest Recent Police Violence Against Minority Youth Across US

This past Thursday eight protestors were arrested in Miami during a demonstration against the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and against the death of local teenager Israel Hernandez in 2013. Both killed were only 18 years of age and both were unarmed. Phil Agnew, who organized the protest stated that the death of both of these young men shows, “proof that racist police departments around the country will continue to use black and brown bodies for target practice.”

The protestors organized by Phil Agnew call themselves the Dream Defenders. Last Thursday they protested in the lobby of Miami’s federal justice building. They raised their arms in silence hoping to get a meeting with U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer, who works with the Southern District of Florida.

Eight protesters refused to leave the building when Police asked them to exit, as the building was about to close for the day. Those eight were arrested and put in plastic handcuffs. Marcia Olivo, one of those arrested, stated, “We’re the voice of the mothers in our community who live in constant fear of not seeing their children come back.” Another protestor arrested, Curtis Hierro stated, “We need more and more folks to take this type of action and make it very clear that we need action on the part of our elected leadership and the folks in the Department of Justice.”

As Miami residents how do you feel about the eight protestors being arrested? What do you think needs to be done to prevent more deaths like this from happening? Tweet us at @Loop305 with the hash tag #TalkAboutitTuesday

EXCLUSIVE PRE-SALE TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE FOR CIRQUE CLUB MEMBERS. TICKETS ONSALE FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC AS OF AUGUST 25 2014

After the remarkable success of TOTEM in 2013, Cirque du Soleil returns to Miami with one of its newest touring shows, Amaluna, which will premiere on December 11 under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium.

Written and directed by Tony Award-winning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s 33rd production Amaluna is a celebration of love and a tribute to the work and voice of women.

Exclusive pre-sale tickets are now available for existing Cirque Club members. To sign up for complimentary membership visit cirquedusoleil.com/cirqu…; giving members access to the best seats under the Big Top, promotions with our partners and a chance to experience never-before-seen exclusive Cirque du Soleil content.

Tickets will be available for purchase to the general public as of August 25 2014 by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/amalu… or by calling 1-877 9 CIRQUE.

The New York Times urges; “The display of female strength is a lovely thing”. New York Post boasts; “gorgeous visuals and dazzling circus acts”, and San Francisco Chronicle described Amaluna as; “sumptuously designed and invigoratingly female-powered”.

AMALUNA

Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men washes ashore the island, triggering an epic and emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test and the couple must face numerous demanding trials before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.

A TRIBUTE TO THE WORK AND VOICE OF WOMEN

For the first time in Cirque du Soleil’s history, Amaluna features a cast that comprises 70% women, with a 100% all-female band. “Amaluna is a tribute to the work and voice of women”, explains Director of Creation Fernand Rainville. “The show is a reflection on balance from a women’s perspective”, he adds. Writer and Director Diane Paulus, winner of a 2013 Tony Award (Pippin) and recently named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2014, says; “I didn’t want to build a ‘women’s agenda’ show. I wanted to create a show with women at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines.” Paulus drew from a series of classical influences when creating the concept of the show, including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was but a dream. It was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and the of the world. The family has since grown and now includes thousands of dreamers – creators, artists, technicians and workers who toil in the shadows. The dream has become a symbol of Quebec pride, an international entertainment company that has brought 35 large-scale shows to life – 20 of which are still in operation. The company, which celebrated it’s 30th anniversary in June 2014, has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees worldwide, including 1,300 performers from more than 50 different countries.

More than a dozen musicians come together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most recognized and beloved artists of Venezuela: Simón Díaz.

Many around the world have heard some version of “Caballo Viejo” including Gipsy King’s “Bamboleo,” unaware of who the composer is, but for Venezuelans he is perhaps the greatest representative of their folklore and one of their country’s icon: Simon Diaz.

For 6 decades, Simón Díaz, was part of the popular culture of Venezuela and became, without doubt, one of the most beloved characters of the country as a singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, television talk show host and cultural promoter.

On August 22, a constellation of stars will be offering a tribute to Simon at the Olympia Theatre at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. A show that will take the audience on a journey through the musical life of the singer, with anecdotes, memories and lots of music. Under the musical direction of Carlos Puchi, guest artists will perform his most famous compositions, such as “Caballo Viejo,” “Sabana,” “Mi Querencia,” “Tonada de Luna Llena,” “Mercedes,” “El Loco Juan Carbina” and many more.

Guest artists include: Huascar Barradas, Luz Marina, María Teresa Chacín, Frank Quintero, Ilan Chester, María Rivas, Karina, Fernando and Juan Carlos, Julio Briceño (Amigos Invisible) Alberto Slezynger (Daiquirí), Saúl Vera, Rummy Olivo, Roberto Torres, José Luis Rodríguez (El Puma) and Simón Díaz’s granddaughter, Daniela Diaz Morales. Elí Bravo and Bettsimar Díaz will serve as emcees.

The fame of Simón Díaz went beyond Venezuela’s borders and his songs were performed around the world by artists such as: Mercedes Sosa, Joan Manuel Serrat, Julio Iglesias, Richard Clayderman, Ray Conniff, Gipsy Kings, Roberto Torres, Caetano Veloso, Danny Rivera, Cheo Feliciano Gilberto Santa Rosa, among others. They were also translated into several languages. In September 2008, he was awarded a Latin Grammy for their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Proceeds will be donated to the Foundation Friends of Children with Cancer

The Koi Moon is said to appear when the water is still and words are mere reflections. A blessing to some mystical and disconcerting to others the moon waxes and wanes as does fortune and the fickleness of man.

MANO Fine Art is proud to present a closing reception for Allegories of the Koi Moon, a collective exhibition featuring the work of Long Looi Lee, MANO and Marcy Grosso.

Long Looi Lee was well on his way to becoming an opera singer when he received a scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York. More than forty years later, Lee continues to incorporate elements of his Asian heritage in his work. Painting koi is both nostalgic and relaxing for Marcy Grosso who recalls feeding the fish in her family’s koi pond flakes of oatmeal when fish food was no longer available in Cuba. MANO is passionate about incorporating unlikely materials in his art; ordinary jute and tree trunks are transformed into extraordinary works for Allegories of the Koi Moon.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Guitars Over Guns, a Miami-based nonprofit that provides mentoring to at-risk youth through music education and performance, announced today that it will hold its first annual Choose Your Sound benefit concert on Saturday, August 23rd from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Gleason Room backstage at the Fillmore in Miami Beach (1700 Washington Ave). Tickets are available for $100 at http://bit.ly/GOGOGala.

Guitars Over Guns (GOGO) president and co-founder Chad Bernstein launched the organization in 2008 to formalize the ad-hoc mentoring that he and other members of the Miami band Suénalo were providing to local middle-schoolers. In partnership with Communities in Schools, the country’s largest dropout prevention organization, GOGO delivers a results-based, scalable model for bringing the joy and discipline of music-making to young people facing adversity in high-risk environments. Through its weekly programs, professional musicians forge positive relationships with students through one-on-one mentoring and instruction in music theory and performance.

“In addition to developing musicianship skills and strong relationships with local mentors, students who participate in Guitars Over Guns programs do better in school: 96 percent of GOGO students have improved their grades in math and reading,” said Bernstein. “The Choose Your Sound benefit concert will raise money to support our programs so that we can bring the transformative power of music to more students and schools in South Florida and beyond. We are thrilled to have a great lineup of bands and some of our community’s most prominent artists lending their support to our mission and joining us for what promises to be a fantastic evening of entertainment.”

Sponsored by Matusalem, Tito’s Vodka and Bombay Sapphire, the Choose Your Sound benefit concert will feature performances from local bands Suénalo, the Spam Allstars and Tomas Diaz as well as student musicians from the GOGO program. Roxanne Vargas of NBC’s 6 in the Mix will host the event, and singer and actor Jencarlos Canela will make a special appearance. There will also be a fine art exhibition featuring work from internationally renowned artist LEBO (who will create a one-of-a-kind painting to be auctioned that evening), Krave, Bhakti Baxter, Alvin Hernandez and Eva Ruiz, and a silent auction of unique gift packages and donated prizes.

“If I weren’t in GOGO I’d probably be susceptible to gang violence, street fights and drug abuse,” said Amelio Joseph, former student of the Guitars Over Guns Program. It’s just a way for me to express myself, to just get my feelings out there. Life without music is not life at all.”

For more information on Choose Your Sound and to purchase tickets, visit http://bit.ly/GOGOGala. To inquire about sponsorship opportunities for the event, please contact Chad Bernstein at chad@guitarsoverguns.org or at 847.420.6327. The next Downtown Hollywood Artwalk will take place Saturday, August 16th from 7-10pm. During the monthly event, participating Downtown Hollywood galleries and shops stay open late, offering complimentary drinks and appetizers for visitors while hosting artwork from an array of artists who display their work on-site for the night’s special event. Don’t be surprised to hear the sounds of a harp, a harmonica or a trio of ukuleles as live music on street corners complement the event, adding magical sounds to the eclectic scene.

During July’s ArtWalk, ArtCenter 2020, located on Harrison Street, featured artist Daniel
Pontet, who, by popular demand, has become an ArtWalk staple. Pontet entertained the
on-looking crowd with his impulse art, a fusion of music and painting, accompanied by
the rhythmic beats of performers from Hollywood’s own Resurrection Drums. The
dynamic team will excite on-lookers again with fresh work on Saturday, August 16th.

This month’s upcoming Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk features many exciting artists
including Victor- Hugo Vaca II, showing at the Cinema Paradiso Theater on Hollywood
Boulevard. Victor- Hugo Vaca II will be present and will be available to answer any
questions about his art. Internationally acclaimed artist Jose Rementeria will be featured
at the ArtsPark Gallery in Young Circle. Rementeria is best known for his work “Human
Beans,” traveling around the globe as part of the Coexistence Collection by the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem. The artist will be present to discuss and show his new work.

Gallery 2014 will feature “Nature in Another Perspective” by Mago’z. Several artists will
be painting live in the gallery during Artwalk for visitors to watch.

“The Downtown Hollywood monthly Artwalk provides another opportunity for the
community to visit the Downtown Hollywood businesses, meet working artists and
purchase affordable artwork. This event has a great vibe and pulls in a nice crowd
including art lovers, locals and visitors who enjoy a night out,” comments Lisa Liotta,
Redevelopment & Operations Manager for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment
Agency (CRA).

The event continues to grow and is complemented by The Downtown Hollywood Mural
Project, another Hollywood CRA place-making initiative, where contemporary outdoor
murals are painted at key locations in Downtown Hollywood in an effort to enhance and
enrich the existing cultural fabric of the Downtown Hollywood community, thereby
attracting more art related activities, businesses and events. During the monthly
ArtWalk, mural artists can often be seen painting their murals live. This is a very cool
enhancement that has been noted throughout the South Florida arts community.

Talk About it Tuesday: Heroes Unite

o38_73_37-m

Heroes Unite is a program created to provide opportunities that can nurture and empower communities through mentoring, volunteering and family engagement. Heroes Unite strengthens communities by teaching them about art, culture and education. They strive to serve people in need and give them a safer and healthier life.

Heroes Unite was created in 1994. They began by supporting families from the Ronald McDonald house. Heroes Unite provided support to families that were going through a tough time caring for their terminally ill children. Heroes Unite provided therapy to siblings and parents of patients as well as engaged them in theatre productions. They also provided these services for people going through AIDS treatment. They offered a fun and creative outlet for people going through a hard time.  In 1999, Heroes Unite restructured their program and offered an after school session that would help transform the lives of children by teaching them about Chinese martial arts.

Heroes Unite now has over 500 students in their program. From modest beginnings Heroes Unite has come a long way in changing the lives of youth and families in Miami. Through art, culture, and education, Heroes Unite has had an enormous positive impact on its participants and in the community.

News: Related Group hosts 3 groundbreakings and 1 property launch

PRESS RELEASE
City Officials Joined The Related Group to Celebrate a Day of Milestones:
The launch of Paraiso Bayviews by Karim Rashid, and the start of construction at Paraiso Bay and Brickell Heights

The Related Group celebrated three milestones last week with groundbreakings at Brickell Heights and Paraiso Bay followed by the launch of their latest project, Paraiso Bayviews with Karim Rashid. Hundreds of VIP brokers attended the day’s events across Miami, and those involved in preconstruction sales took home more than $9 million in commission checks.

Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who were present at the two groundbreakings, congratulated The Related Group’s team on the new projects, which they noted are creating a 24-hour urban core in the Brickell area, and reenergizing the Edgewater neighborhood.

At Brickell Heights, located next to the two-million-square-foot development Brickell CityCentre, David Rockwell has created a sleek glass-walled lobby, glamorous amenity spaces with a private-club vibe, and lavish pool terraces. The 690 luxury residences will sit atop a 30,000-square-foot Equinox Fitness Center and SoulCycle, a state-of-the-art workout studio that will open its first Miami location at Brickell Heights.

At the launch of Paraiso Bayviews, international interior and industrial designer Karim Rashid was on hand to greet the guests. For his second project with The Related Group, Rashid has evolved his trademark colors and bold shapes for a more subdued organic design with softer hues and natural woods inspired in the Paraiso community’s garden bay front setting. Residents of Bayviews, described as the best value within the Paraiso community, will enjoy all of Paraiso’s luxury amenities including a rooftop swimming pool, tennis courts, a beach club, marina, gardens by Enzo Enea, a signature restaurant by Michael Schwartz, and more.

The Paraiso Bay property, set between Biscayne Boulevard and the Bay at NE 31st Street, is East Edgewater’s only master planned community. Celebrities who have already reserved homes there include DJ and music producer David Guetta, basketball star Manu Ginobili, and Spanish tennis legend Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

Notable Guests: Karim Rashid, Designer of interiors for Paraiso Bayviews, Celebrity Chef Michael Schwartz, Mayor Thomas Regalado, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, Carlos Rosso, President of the Condo Division at The Related Group, Sonia Figueroa, Senior Vice President The Related Group, Arden Karson, Senior Vice President The Related Group acquisitions

Farewell Henry Stone and Thanks for All the Funk

A note from the Publisher:

For the past 10 years, most of my time in Miami, I have had both the honor and the pleasure of working for an amazing music man, Henry Stone, owner of, amongst many others, TK Records. When I joined the company, he was in his early 80’s, having gone blind a few years earlier. My job was to help them aggregate and digitize the historic releases from his labels from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and up into the 80s. We also created new releases, about a half dozen new albums, all while he was closing in on the century mark.

In my opinion, no one has had such a profound impact on the music scene in Miami. He also had a significant impact on the music across the country, both as a hit-making distributor, and a pioneering label owner. Over the course of 60+ years, his labels released many thousands of tracks recorded right here in the Magic City. His labels contributed more to the distribution of that Caribbean Miami sound than any other, especially in the early days, and had an influence on music world-wide. He was a key influencer in R&B, Funk, Soul, and, of course, Disco.

Despite his success, he never parlayed that into being a mega-rich oligarch. He never moved off to LA or New York. He stayed right here in Miami, bringing that sound to the world. He shared that wealth and gave so many people a chance that otherwise would not have had it.

I never knew him in his heyday, but I did know his music. I grew up on that music. However, knowing him for the last 10 years of his life was very rewarding. I got to hear his stories, stories of the history of the music, over and over, until I could recite many of them better than he. I learned about the music business, and most importantly its history, direct from the source. He lived through the height of the 45, through the dominance of the album, to the debut of the CD and on into the time of digital downloads. He really saw it all. Very few people had his perspective, and he was on top of it right up to the end.

He passed away August 7, 2014, quietly. He never lost his sharp mind or wit, which was amazing. He was a great man, and all Miamians, all music lovers, owe him gratitude for all of the fantastic musicians he produced out of our city. Music would not be what it is today without his influence. It was unfortunate he did not live to see the completion of his biographical movie, but it will be released in a few months, and we are very excited about honoring his work and his life.

I am very glad to have known him. He taught me more than just about the music business, he taught me about being a good human and businessperson. His skill at working with people was second to none. Many were the times I saw him take a negative situation and turn it positive. He was generous almost to a fault and many the times I joked that he was too nice to be in the music business, but, of course, I was wrong. He really did inject so much funk and soul into this world, and for that, I am eternally thankful.

Thank you to the Miami New Times, Miami Herald and another Miami Herald for these wonderful obituary articles honoring the life of this man who made his way up from being an orphan in the Bronx to being a pillar in the music business and the community.

Below is the official press release and coming soon is the Henry Stone documentary movie, Rock Your Baby.

(PS: A small sidenote: the name of this site, Soul Of Miami, was inspired by my working at Henry Stone Music and feeling all Miami Soul music.)

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Henry Stone was born June 3, 1921, in Bronx, New York to parents Leah Goldstein and Charles Epstein. He was raised in Washington Heights, NY. Henry passed away August 7, 2014. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allen and sister Rosamond.

Henry began playing the trumpet in his early teens while at an orphanage in Pleasanteville, NY. Henry joined the US Army in 1943, playing in a racially integrated band. Henry served in the US Army stationed at Fort Dix in New Brunswick, NJ and was discharged in 1947. He then moved to Los Angeles working on sales and promotion for early record labels.

In 1948, Henry settled in Miami, Florida, setting up his own distribution company, Seminole, and shortly afterwards the Crystal recording studio. In 1951 he recorded Ray Charles’ “St. Pete Florida Blues”, among others. In 1952 he started two record labels Rockin for blues and Glory for Gospel. In association with King Records, Stone released The Charms’ “Heart of Stone” on King’s De Luxe Records, and it became R&B chart #1 in 1954. He was instrumental in signing James Brown to King and in recording Brown’s first hit, “Please, Please, Please”.

In 1955, he established his own independent publishing companies and several record labels, including Chart and Dade, mainly recording local blues artists. In 1960, Stone cut “(Do The) Mashed Potatoes” by
“Nat Kendrick and the Swans”- actually James Brown’s backing band – for the Dade label. He also set up Tone Distribution, which became one of the most successful record distribution companies, working with Atlantic, Mowtown, Stax and many more independent labels. Stone’s distribution expertise was instrumental in spreading the music produced by those labels around the world.

While he focused on the distribution business, Stone also continued to record R&B artists. These included Betty Wright, whose “Clean UP Woman” was a major hit in 1971. Stone also set up the Glades Label, recording the million selling “Why Can’t We Live Together” by Timmy Thomas.

In 1972, Stone decided to concentrate on recording and manufacturing his own records, forming another new record company, TK Records with Steve Alaimo, based in Hialeah, Florida. In 1973, two of Stones warehouse employees, Harry Wayne “KC” Casey and Rick Finch, began collaborating on writing and performing songs. As KC and the Sunshine Band, they released a string of hits such as “Get Down Tonight, “That’s The Way I Like It” and “Shake Your Booty”, all on Stone’s TK label. At the same time, Casey and Finch wrote and produced the number one “Rock Your Baby” which was performed by George McCrae.

Stone’s companies produced numerous other hits during the 1970’s, including Beginning of the End’s “Funky Nassau”, Latimore’s “Let’s Straighten It Out”, Anita Wards “Ring My Bell”, Little Beaver’s “Party Down”, and Gwen McCrea’s “Rockin’ Chair”, Peter Brown’s “Do You Want to Get Funky With Me” and Bobby Calwell’s “What Won’t You Do For Love”.

Stone later became involved with Hot Productions in the reissue of classics on CD and recently continued reissuing R&B and dance tracks on his own label, The Legendary Henry Stone Presents… In 2004, Henry Stone was awarded the first ever Pioneer Award for the Dance Music Hall of Fame, which was presented in New York City where he received a standing ovation.

In 2006, Henry became involved with The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and started a music production program, the first of its kind, to provide professional training to the blind and visually impaired young performers, composers and sound engineers. In 2007, the new Gloria Martin third floor wing opened which houses the Henry and Inez Stone Music and Sound Studio.

Henry is survived by his wife Inez Stone; his daughter Lynda Stone and husband Ned Berndt; daughter Sheri and husband Ken Watson; daughter Crystal and Bill McCall; daughter Kim Stone; and son David Stone; their grandchildren Lysa Stone, Beth Stone, Shon and Carolyn (Keelin and Ryan) Christi, Mac and Stephanie (on the way), Daniel and Jamie Osiason.

He is also survived by his son Joseph Stone and his children, Brenna, Skyler, Torrin and Darcee; and by his daughter Donna and husband Evan Wolfe and their son Jake, and Inez’s brother Harrison Keith Pinchot, MD who will always be greatfull for Henry’s generosity for putting him through medical school.

Our family would like to thank all those who provided love and support during these difficult times.

H2ombre is an Epic Experience

20140718_194958

H2ombre is a groundbreaking and exhilarating show that intertwines EDM, acrobatics, creative graphics, street art and good ole fashioned water into quite a majestic feast for the eyes. The performers are determined to whip the crowd up into a frenzy and unleash a boisterous, soaking wet dance party. We do not want to spoil the show so we shall keep our review short, but there are spoiler pics and videos below. If you can’t help yourself, feel free to click away.

We would recommend getting nice and “influenced” before you go to amplify your experience. H2ombre is only an hour long, but well worth the price of admission. We urge you purchase the front “seats” in the immersive stage area and wear attire that embraces the water and allows you to fully participate. You most likely will get soaked if you get close to either stages, but that is part of the fun! After the show there is an ample lounge/club/bar area to keep the party going. The herb infused alcoholic slushies were quite tasty. This show only runs through August,  so make sure you do not miss it. It is a sensationally fun and creative date idea too.

Local Hero: Ian Welsch

0158-KF2013-MotivationalEdge

Bio

Ian earned his BS, as well as Masters Degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Taking a position as an educator in the Miami-Dade County Public School System in 2005- 2009 taught him a great deal, and recognizing the need for additional educational resources, he started an in-home tutoring company. As the arts were being cut from classrooms, Ian saw an increasing need to leverage the arts as a motivational platform for urban youth. Increasing referrals highlighted a community-wide need and as a result, in June 2008, The Motivational Edge Inc. was formed. Ian is currently the Founder and CEO of the company

Who has been your most influential mentor?

Donna Phillips, my Advisor and a lead professor at The University of Bridgeport.

How did you get to where you are today?

Passion, perseverance, faith and the ability to ask questions helped me get to where I am today. I’ve always known I was on the right path but I certainly did not get here without help and guidance from others!

How did you get to be a community leader?

In my case, the following saying is very appropriate, “actions speak louder than words.” I have been fortunate enough to assemble a team of dedicated teaching artists, educators and professionals that care deeply for our community and the youth that reside in it. Together, we are all leaders of our community, guiding the younger generation to make more mindful decisions.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself still as the CEO of The Motivational Edge, thriving in multiple cities. I also see myself as a successful non-profit coach, impacting the lives of many people outside of my daily operations at The Motivational Edge.

What about this city inspires you?

I love that Miami is still a new and fresh city, with many cultures and ethnicities comprising the ever changing population of transplants, locals and everyone in between. I must say, the beautiful weather is also an inspiration.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

Considering that I grew up in the northeast, my favorite thing about Miami is the winter…If we can even call it that.

Miami should be…  more collaborative.

Miami could be… more than a vacation destination for many.

Miami wants to be… a highly revered city and is trying to find its way.

Miami needs… to be worrying less about excess and more about access for its citizens.

“I am an architect and visual artist. My preferable medium is acrylic and oil and I practice the style of abstract expressionism. Most of my work is done in action, although I also use studies and sketches to do my final expressions. Colors are very important in my expression’s maneuvers to create the volumes, balance and beauty in the compositions and to bring meaning to everything I do.” -Ronnie

Talk About it Tuesday: Petition against Walmart on Endangered Pine Rockland

ram-thumb-560x294

A few weeks ago the news broke that the University of Miami sold endangered pine rockland forest to a Palm Beach Gardens-based developer.  The developers planned to build a Walmart.  Leslye Jacobs, former student of the University of Miami was outraged and decided to make a petition against this called MoveOn.org.

Developers have vowed to set 40 acres out of the 88 purchased aside for a preserve, but that isn’t enough for the people of Miami.  An online petition created by activist Chris Wolverton called, thepetitionsite.com has almost 35,000 signatures fighting against the new developemental plans.  Leslye’s petition has already attracted 8,000 signatures as well.  Lesyle plans to present the petition to the Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez along with Gov. Rick Scott.

As residents of Miami, how do you feel about the plans for the development of the land?  Do you think it should all be protected or are you okay with the new plans to develop? Let us know on twitter, Tweet us at @Loop305 with the #TalkAboutitTuesday

Long Looi Lee was well on his way to becoming an opera singer when he received a scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York. More than forty years later, Lee continues to incorporate elements of his Asian heritage in his work. Painting koi is both nostalgic and inspiring for Marcy Grosso who recalls feeding the fish in her family’s koi pond flakes of oatmeal when fish food was no longer available in Cuba. MANO is passionate about incorporating unlikely materials in his art; ordinary jute and tree trunks are transformed into extraordinary works for Allegories of the Koi Moon.
