Whole Foods Summer Wines Tweetup

whole

Sizzling summer sips in red, white and bubbles have arrived at Whole Foods Market®

Taste and tweet on June 26

As temperatures soar and rhythms slow, Whole Foods Market raises a glass to its crisp, playful, delicious Top 10 Summer Wines that are perfect for poolside frolicking or sharing under a blanket of stars on a warm summer night.

Whole Foods Market’s hand-selected summer wines take shoppers on a tasty trip through some of the most prolific wine regions of the world with nothing but a wine glass in hand and a lasting finish as a souvenir. Wine lovers can sip and savor the balanced white peach and thyme flavors of a Spanish verdejo or adventure to the Rhône River Valley with a red whose aromatic black fruit and spicy bouquet pairs perfectly with blue cheese burgers on the grill.

“It is summertime, and Whole Foods Market is making the living a whole lot easier with our line-up of wines that make for a great time without breaking the bank,” said Doug Bell, global beverage buyer for Whole Foods Market. “There is something for every person and occasion – whether it’s paired with shellfish for beach picnic or mixed into sangria for a backyard barbecue.”

Whole Foods Market invites wine enthusiasts 21 and older to discuss these and other favorite summer wines at the next Twitter Tastings on June 26. Go towholefoodsmarket.com/wine for more information and use the hashtag #WFMwine to follow the conversation. The online tasting schedule is:

 Thursday, June 26, 8-9 p.m. EST:

  • Frey Agriculturist Organic Blanc, California
  • Les Hauts de Bel Air Sauvignon Blanc, France
  • Querciabella Mongrana, Italy
  • Santa Rita Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile

The company’s Top 12 Summer Wines include:

Innovac!ón Chenin-Chardonnay, Argentina – With aromas of white flowers, apple and papaya, the flavors move from Bosc pear to applesauce and spice. The finish is clean and well-balanced.

Frey Agriculturist Organic Blanc, California – This white blend from Frey Vineyards, the first certified organic winery in the U.S., has tropical fruit flavors with a note of sweet grass and whisper of riesling and orange blossom on the finish.

El Perro Verde Rueda, Spain – With a bouquet of grapefruit on the nose, white peach, thyme and subtle savory notes move to a long finish that is nicely balanced between tanginess and fruit.

Les Hauts de Bel Air Sauvignon Blanc, France –

This Entre-Deux-Mers Bordeaux blanc is made by the Sichel family and has aromas of grapefruit zest, rosemary then green pepper and delicate yellow peach and citrus flavors that lead to a balanced mineral-tinged finish.

Louis Latour Grand Ardèche Chardonnay, France – In the bouquet, there is toasty oak, fresh green apple and pear, and there is a depth of richness and balance in the smooth, ripe finish.

Soleil des Garrigues Ventoux, France – With black fruit, spices and sweet cherry on the nose, this red blend has minerality and sweet anise flavors with soft tannins gently rounding out the finish.

Montevina Barbera, California – This juicy, easy drinking red is a terrific food wine. With fresh acid and low tannins, it displays aromas of cherry and Amador spice and flavors of dark cherry and toasty oak.

Sanford Flor de Campo Pinot Noir, California – An initial burst of bright red raspberries and bing cherries moves to hints of cola, black pepper and earthiness. Toasty oak influences the balanced, medium finish.

Querciabella Mongrana, Italy –From the largest area of certified organic-grape-growing land in Italy, this red blend has a complexity of dark fruit and sweet anise. A lovely, rich butteriness backs up notes of sour cherry and cocoa.

Santa Rita Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile – This Maipo Valley red has forward herbal notes of green parsley mixed with aromas of ripe black fruit. Food friendly and well-balanced, intense flavors of black pepper and ripe plum deepen the lingering finish.

Mas Picosa Capçanes Monstant 2013, Spain – This Priorat red has spice cake and candied dark berry aromas and a jammy fruit counterpointed by a zesty minerality. The long finish is rounded out by soft tannins.

Deccolio Prosecco, Italy – This perfect bellini sparkler has lemon-lime, tangerine, tropical fruit and honey on the nose. With fruit-forward flavors of orange peel, peach and apricot, this refreshing wine is medium-bodied on the palate.

Local Heroes: Yuval Ofir

Yuval+Yo+R

Bio:

Yuval Ofir is a Miami Native. After attending the University of Miami in 2009, Yuval became immersed in the Miami Blog culture. Yuval is now the founder of Yo Miami and was responsible for opening Yo Space, which is a studio for artists and galleries.  Yuval’s love for Miami and art has allowed him to help Miami artists for years.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My grandpa has definitely been one of the most influential people in my life in general. Having seen first hand over the years how he runs his business (which I now run with my cousin) and supported even our extended family members, I couldn’t have asked for a better example of integrity. As for my more recent (starting in 2011) foray into the art world, James Echols and Annette Peikert of Life is Art and SoulofMiami.org have been the people I turn to most often when it comes to getting advice on how to proceed when the path becomes unclear ahead of me.

How did you get to where you are today?

I was born and raised in Miami, and graduated from the University of Miami, though was fortunate enough to travel abroad a lot in my younger years. I started working for my grandpa’s company in the warehouse and making deliveries when I was 15 and have been working my way up ever since. After graduating college in ’09 I moved to the Omni area to be closer to our office/warehouse in Wynwood and that’s when I started getting sucked into the art and cultural scene that started blossoming around that time.

How did you get to be a community leader?

I guess it’s still hard to think of myself as a community leader but I guess just by following the example my grandpa set for me. When making a serious decision whether for the family business or Yo Miami, I always try and remember that I need to be willing to stand behind it for the next 5, 10, 20 years. Developing the network of artists, musicians, business professionals, and others I’ve built up at this point was really just a result of never being afraid to pursue an opportunity that presented itself. Then of course if something develops, making sure I tackle every project thoroughly and efficiently so that people will want to work with me on the next one.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

So many things are on the horizon that it’s hard to say. Definitely still in Miami (though maybe a little further north where things are a little slower paced, what with all the big developments coming down the pipeline in the downtown/wynwood areas), possibly raising a kid or two with my wife, and hopefully still involved in making some amazing things happen for the art and culture scene here.

What about this city inspires you?

I think the fact that it rarely feels stagnant living here. It’s such a young city and covers such a broad spectrum of cultures and influences, that it’s almost impossible for it to stay the same for too long. Ideally the cream rises to the top and the great businesses establish a place for themselves within it but unfortunately because things are so spread out, sometimes even the good guys don’t make it in the end.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

The variety. Whether it’s settings (parks, beaches, urban, rural, etc.), people, cultures, restaurants or architecture, you always have a million and one choices.

Miami should be… taken with a grain of salt.

Miami could be… the greatest place to live in the world.

Miami wants to be… taken seriously.

Miami needs… time to find itself.

Josh Capon / Lure Fishbar

With ocean views, a celebrity chef and the freshest seafood available, Lure Fishbar inside the Loews Miami Beach Hotel has quickly gained a large following since its opening in December 2013. Chat Chow TV sat down with Josh Capon, the Executive Chef and partner, to learn more about Lure, how it stacks up to the NYC outpost and what he has in store for Miami.

Lure Fishbar has been an institution in NYC for more than 10 years — it’s so popular in fact that their was a social media outcry when rumors circulated that it may be closing. While the original outpost is still very much in business, the owner of the Lowes had been a big fan of the restaurant and convinced Capon and his team to come down to Miami.

“We thought the space, the timing and location was perfect,” notes Capon. “And I think we’ve created something really special here.”

While the restaurant’s menu has many similarities to its NYC sister location, such as fresh seafood towers, sushi and its famous Bash Burger, the menu also features unique dishes that showcase European and Latin flavors like Seared Diver Sea Scallops with Steamed Clams and Chorizo and Steamed Red Snapper with served Veracruz style.

Heading up the bar program is bartending veteran Robert Ferrara, who has created a menu featuring creative cocktails filled with fresh ingredients that are perfect for its Miami Beach setting. Capon himself is a big fan.

“He’s constantly coming up with new, inventive seasonal cocktails that blow people away,” adds Capon. “He’s a huge talent, an absolute pleasure, and we’re very lucky to have him.”

Capon has plenty of exciting projects in the works, most notably his new half hour food competition show titled “Frankenfood” which just began to air on Spike TV this month.

Want to learn the secret to Capon’s award-winning Bash Burger? Or find out how to get yourself a (possibly) complimentary drink? Watch the video above to find out all of that and more.

Miami Beach Foodie Hot Spot Introduces Tantalizing New Menu & Design

Tater Tots_ Photo Credit - Jipsy

Earning a three-star rating by The Miami Herald in its first year and a nod as “Best Gastropub” by the Miami New Times in 2012, HaVen has remained a locals favorite, a tried n’ true destination for fabulous food and drinks served in a unique setting equal parts ultra-lounge and high-tech watering hole. Now in its third year, HaVen is taking a fabulous step forward with a new design and menu concept sure to please foodies and the cocktail-set alike. “We’re thrilled with our success at HaVen but are continuously thinking of new ways to bring something special to our concept,” says Mike Boles, co-owner of HaVen Hospitality Concepts (HHC), which owns/operates HaVen and its spicy sister restaurant, Huahua’s Taqueria. “The new design elements definitely take the HaVen experience a step further and Chef’s new menu is killer.  We’re excited to share it.”

Chef is executive chef Todd Erickson, one of the region’s most celebrated toques.  Named Eater Miami’s “Hottest Chef” in 2012, Erickson is known for his flavorful cuisine and irresistible Southern charm.  To help celebrate HaVen’s 3rd birthday, Erickson is rolling out a diverse, globally-inspired new menu displaying impeccable attention to detail, masterly technique and the bold, often playful, flavors he’s known for. “The concept for HaVen hasn’t changed,” Erickson says.  “Many of the 21 new dishes are small plates, which HaVen is known for, but the majority is composed dishes perfect for those looking for a more ‘traditional’ dining experience.  Which goes hand-in-hand with the new design elements.”

In addition to the late-night lounge experience that guests have come to love, HaVen is and has always been a full service restaurant. To help evoke a more traditional setting in the earlier hours, Boles, known for his artistic vision and passion for design, has created custom hydraulic matte tables that raise and extend with folding leafs, a departure from the low-slung cocktail-style tables HaVen has sported since it opened.  The tables have the ability to lower to lounge height with the flip of a lever so as the evening progresses and the vibe changes into a late-night scene, the tables transform.  Invention in all things is a HaVen trademark and is easily found in Erickson’s new menu.

Inspired by his Southern roots and passion for using locally sourced, fresh ingredients, it runs the gamut, offering a wide array of dishes stunningly executed options.  Herbivores will be thrilled with HaVen’s new X-TRA section featuring Cool Ranch Edamame ($6); Little Devils – chef’s weekly deviled eggs ($8); Black Garlic and Chive Drop Biscuits with pink peppered goat cheese butter ($7) and decadent Cauli-polonaise – roasted whole cauliflower topped with a fried egg, parsley, rye and black truffle butter ($11). Guests can choose from tantalizing seafood selections such as the luscious Macadamia Lobster served with sweet pickled chilies and smooth avocado butter ($36);

Bangkok Tiger Shrimp – carrot, mint, basil, cilantro, nuac cham and peanut ($14) or opt for meat options including Proper Sausage made with harissa-infused lamb and served on brioche, topped with French feta and minted sweet pea ($15); Country Fried Quail with Peruvian potato, blackstrap molasses and mustard seed “caviar” ($17); and an array of “boutique” Burgers including Erickson’s take on Korean BBQ –  Galbi – made with Korean BBQ Short rib, lotus pickle, scallion and Asian pear ($11).

A number of not to be missed HaVen signature favorites remain, including the Duck Duck Quail – duck burger, foie gras butter, quail egg and shallot-parsley salad ($14); and various sushi rolls, from Everything – sockeye, cream cheese, chive, bagel, sesame, garlic, poppy ($13) to Crackle Pop – spicy tuna, seared and crisp rice, daikon, yuzu-shichime aioli ($15).

New Sweets, including the Cobbler – local fruits with macadamia cookie crumble and vanilla ice cream ($9); Dirty Blondie – molten chocolate chip “cookie” with vanilla ice cream and liquid ganache ($9); and Panna Cotta – cuatro leches with vanilla cake and local fruits ($9), offer the perfect sweet finish to an evening.

Of course, HaVen’s iconic libations are a must for sipping on during dinner as well as late-night. Guests can choose from a list of cocktails including the newhaVen mule – Nolet’s Gin and Fever-Tree Ginger Beer with fresh lime ($15); as well as staples such as eleVate – Maestro Dobel tequila, cucumber and radish; feVer – Grey Goose poire, jalapeno, lychee and pear-Prosecco ($15); and the over-the-top take on a dirty martini, diVine – Stoli elite, caviar stuffed olives and filthy brine ($40).

HaVen is located on the corner of Lincoln and West at 1237 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. Dinner is served nightly; 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.; 6 p.m. until midnight on Saturday and Sunday.  For reservations, please call (305) 987-8885 or email info@havenlounge.com.  For more information, please visitwww.havenlounge.com.  Ample street parking is available.

Talk About it Tuesday: MIAMI SOUP

miami soup logo

MIAMI SOUP is a grassroots model for funding small to medium-sized projects that enhance the quality of community life in Miami. MIAMI SOUP uses a simple method that brings together the community by serving them supper, soup, salad, bread and a beverage. These meals generate profits that will go directly back into the community.

The purchase of a meal gives the community member an opportunity to cast a vote for what they would like to see improved in the community. The money made from these meals goes directly towards the neighborhood issue that received the most votes. MIAMI SOUP brings people together and gives them chance to be directly involved in improving their communities.

MIAMI SOUP was created to make change easier and less complicated in communities. MIAMI SOUP allows for people to not only donate money, but to have their voices be heard about what they want to see change. MIAMI SOUP sparks dialogue between community members who may have normally not gotten together. MIAMI SOUP is also not affected by the restrictions laid out by private and governmental grants. This allows them to take on projects and make changes more efficiently.

Haven’t heard of MIAMI SOUP? Check them out here: MIAMI SOUP

And check out their next event, Thursday, July 10, 6:00pm-9:00pm, Grand Central, 697 North Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33136

Burger Brawl Review

Burger Brawl’s Best Burgers

Burger-Brawl-2014-4

Burgers have experienced a glorified Renaissance period over the past decade. We are proud that Miami has been a staunch contributor to this deliriously delicious movement. This city has introduced Pincho Factory’s Toston Burger and Quesadilla Burger, Swine’s orgasmic Swine Burger and Eating House’s celestial Carbonara Burger. All these superb and unique creations are MUST-tries for legit burger aficionados and almost all were present at Burger Brawl.

The Miami ambassador and undisputed King of the burger scene is the Burger Beast. The Burger Beast is a sweet and affable blogger specializing in burgers and comfort food. He benevolently organized the first annual Burger Brawl at Magic City Casino where 20 of his favorite contenders grilled it out for burger supremacy. The event was sensational with unlimited tasty burgers, desserts, tater tots and liquor for only $50!!! It was the best dollar to foodgasm ratio we have ever witnessed at a food event. RSVP for the HACK portion of the launch.

9am-5pm: HACK: A Bike Sharing System Hackathon
3-6pm: MAKE: A Bike Accessory Make-a-thon
6-9pm: DRANK: A Celebration & Bike Fleet Reveal

Bike on over, hack out a bike share program, make bike accessories with a 3D printer and then finish it all off with a drink! Sound like an obscure itinerary for a Saturday? Not to the folks at The LAB Miami and Republic Bike. Wynwood tech hub, The LAB Miami, will host BIKE / HACK / MAKE / DRANK, a three-part launch event for its new, shared Republic Bike fleet. The custom bikes, branded for program sponsors TigerDirect and MIAMade, will be made available as an added amenity to the entrepreneurial members of The LAB Miami.

As Miami’s most talked about breeding place for innovation and progressive startups, The LAB Miami is centrally-located in Miami’s budding Wynwood neighborhood, an up-and-coming area that still lacks a sense of pedestrian permeability. The area’s hot spots are still significantly spread out; therefore, Miami-based tech retail giant TigerDirect and local maker organization MIAMade came together to provide a sustainable transportation solution for the members of The LAB, the burgeoning creative campus that continues to propel Miami into the international tech spotlight. Republic Bike lent their expertise in developing innovative bike sharing solutions to put together a unique program for The Lab.

To launch The Labs bike program, Republic Bike decided to host the event BIKE / HACK / MAKE / DRANK, at The LAB Miami in an effort to raise awareness for the new program and to spread the word about the importance, convenience and joy of transportation alternatives.

Guests and participants are invited to bike on over at 12pm in time for the festivities to begin! The first part of the event will consist of a Hackathon where teams of two will compete to create a modified mechanism for the functionality of The LAB’s bike sharing system. The team with the most logical, innovative and easy-to-use modification will win a prize provided by TigerDirect and Republic Bike.

The MAKE part of the event will consist of a two-hour Make-a-thon with a bicycle twist, led by MIAMade. This special maker event will bring Miami’s maker community together to create and showcase a plethora of eclectic bicycle accessories with electronics, robotics, 3D printers and other popular maker apparatuses.

To wrap up the three-part launch, the DRANK portion will coincide with Second Saturday’s Art Walk. Stolen Spiced Rum cocktails and Duvel beer will be served to the public, as the official Republic Bike fleet of The LAB Miami will be revealed. All locals are invited to stop by and test out the new LAB bikes!

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – The Perfect Summer Look

The-Perfect-Summer-Look

Summer has finally reared its beautiful face in the northern hemisphere and Miami could not be more excited. Even in the land of eternal sunshine, we get excited for the energy and experiences that are unique to this season and we prepare accordingly. The Miami summer look is colorful, comfortable yet chic. For more put-together looks, Miami likes items like maxi dresses and skirts with platform espadrilles. For our super casual looks, we think breezy, floral tanks and ornate sandals.

The prefect summer look, however, is not complete without a hair style to match. So, this summer, I decided to put my “virgin hair” in the capable hands of Emilee Coyle, hairstylist at Studio Chroma in Coral Gables. Emilee is Miami’s queen of balayage and ombré, which are the go-to hair styles for summer. After two hours with Emilee, my hair was armed with the natural sun-kissed, beachy look that will be the final touch on every summer look you will see this season. Check out my transformation process below and get started on your perfect summer look!

In Studio Chroma's orange chairs, I enjoyed my "virgin hair" for the last time.

Hidden Colors 3: South Florida Screening | Miami Gardens

June 26, 2014- “Hidden Colors” — a documentary series about the cultural history of African Americans, identity and race in America, will be releasing the highly anticipated third installment, “The Rules Of Racism.” The film will focus on the topic of race, racism, and history within the United States. The project features various speakers from scholars such as Dick Gregory and Phil Valentine, to entertainment vets like Nas, KRS-ONE, David Banner and Paul Mooney.

The series’ director and producer Tariq “Elite” Nasheed — a New York Times bestselling author, public speaker, and radio host — is widely known for his social commentary. In the trailer, he briefly alludes to a certain motivation in approaching the topic of racism, “there’s never been a real dialogue in America about race because every time we talk about race the conversation then turns into ‘what’s wrong with black people.'” This documentary destroys the myths and lies about melinated people of African descent. For those who are seeking the truth about black history and the effects of systemic racism in this country, Hidden Colors 3 and the Hidden Colors series is a must watch. This documentary pertains to our youth, education, economics, world history amongst other topics from a melinated perspective. If the realization and understanding that racism in America still occurs till today, self adjustment can go into effect.

Hidden Colors 3: The Rules of Racism will be released June 26, 2014 and will be premiered in select theaters and locations around the country. South Florida patrons will have the opportunity to view this informative documentary FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY on the release date at Betty T. Ferguson Complex in Miami Gardens, 3000 NW 199th St, Miami Gardens, FL 33056.

Photographs of La Tagliatella by Mr Q 305

La Tagiatella…by the time you finish reading the name, as you enter through the glass doors, you have already stepped a few centuries back in time into a beautiful northern Italian castle.
The decor is simply breathtaking. Nothing has been overlooked in La Tagliatella’s rococo inspired interior. There is so much to see here that you could spend several days just discovering new details…
and then…there’s the food…
But before we get to that, keep in mind that La Tagliatella is part of a worldwide chain of more than one hundred and fifty restaurants. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that they must be doing something right…and that…of course…is the food…
The Handcrafted Meatballs, made with their own home-made sausage and beef, seasoned with garlic, oregano, parsley and Parmesan cheese were juicy and cooked to perfection. They came with spicy Napoletano and pesto rosse panna sauce.
The Arancini, which are risotto balls, filled with mozzarella cheese, breaded and deep fried to resemble small oranges (hence the name) were crisp with a light crunchy exterior. They were complemented with a spicy tomato sauce.
Mozzarella Carpaccio, consisted of imported Italian buffalo mozzarella sliced on top of crushed tomato with fresh anchovies, olive paste and fresh basil. Now for those of you who are staunch anti-anchovies militants, I would strongly advise to try this Carpaccio, the buffalo mozzarella’s soft, moist, somewhat granular, semi-elastic texture and its mild yet slightly sour taste combine to give the fresh anchovies a delicate, natural flavor which will take your eating experience into the fifth taste (beyond salty, sweet, sour and bitter), the one called “umami”. Try it, you won’t regret it.
Now, in a place called “the noodle” you know the pasta is going to be outstanding. The Pappardelle with Parmigiano and Truffle which are wide egg noodles, sautéed with truffle sauce, Parmesan cheese, topped with fried egg and black caviar did not dissapoint.
Branzino alla Mugnaia is Mediterranean sea bass, cooked with a lemon butter asparagus sauce. Served with roasted potatoes, grilled asparagus and arugula salad. This sea bass had a perfect flaky, buttery texture and a delicate well seasoned taste.
To finish an incredible meal, the Bocconcino, a fresh cheese cake with custard and the Tre Bombe al Cioccolato, a trio of chocolate and hazelnut semifreddo with chocolate sauce, were the perfect sonata.

Public Art Wednesday: Juan Fernández Rivera

tumblr_n686lqh58d1qgk821o1_500

Don’t miss your chance to check out Puerto-Rican artist, Juan Fernández Rivera, more commonly known as, Jufe. Jufe will be hosting his art exhibition, “Newspeak,” at the YoAmo305 gallery in Wynwood. “Newspeak,” is a series that will explore the language that is redefining how we communicate, also known as Emoji’s.

Jufe attended the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. It was there where Jufe developed his skills for space and his perception and form. Through designing, Jufe gravitated towards continuous traces and line forms. These two elements have impacted his artistic style in his more previous works.

Jufe has always had a passion for public art and sees abandoned surroundings as an opportunity to create something beautiful. Jufe worked with a street art group called La Pandilla, which secured him a place, not only the US street art scene, but the Latin American art scene as well.

More recently Jufe’s artistic style has developed into a refined form of intricate tracing, wire framing and pointillism. Jufe uses a combination of different painting surfaces and acrylics to give his artwork immense quality and depth. Jufe is one of the best plastic artists in Puerto Rico of his generation and continues to grow and expand his work.

Head to the YoAmo305 Gallery located at, 2311 NW 2nd Ave, Miami FL, 33127, every week day (except for Tuesday) from 1-4pm to check out Jufe’s exhibition until June 14th!

News: University of Miami Selects New Director for the Lowe Art Museum

University of Miami Selects New Director for the Lowe Art Museum

Jill Deupi HeadshotThe University of Miami has appointed Dr. Jill Deupi, who currently serves as director and chief curator of University Museums at Fairfield University, as the new director of the Lowe Art Museum.

“I am honored to have been selected to lead the Lowe Art Museum as it embarks on an exciting new chapter in its rich and storied history,” Deupi said. “The museum is perfectly poised to catapult itself to the next level, building upon its tremendous resources and past successes while embracing 21st century museum practice, contemporary art and culture, and new education modalities – above all, participatory learning.”

Deupi credits the Lowe’s solid foundation and Miami’s effervescent arts scene for her decision to join UM, beginning August 11. One of her goals for the museum is “to connect its remarkable collections to the contemporary art world and current cultural trends.” She hopes to accomplish this partly with enhanced public accessibility to the Lowe’s holdings via an online, user-friendly database.

“We selected Dr. Jill Deupi as the new director of the Lowe after an extensive search,” said UM College of Arts & Sciences Dean Leonidas Bachas. “Her distinguished museum experience and academic background in art and art history, as well as her enthusiasm to involve our students in experiential learning are a perfect combination for the Lowe to expand its reach as a didactic resource for the university and local community.”

In addition to her leadership roles at the University Museums at Fairfield University, Deupi has also served as an assistant professor of art history since 2008. Under Deupi’s leadership as founding director, the Bellarmine Museum of Art has welcomed thousands of visitors since it opened to the public in late 2010. Deupi has curated close to 20 temporary exhibitions at the Bellarmine and at Fairfield’s Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery, which she has also directed since 2013.

Opened in 1952, the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum is Miami-Dade County’s oldest and only comprehensive visual arts institution, featuring the region’s most diverse collection of world art. The Lowe’s distinguished permanent collection spans 5,000 years of western and non-western art history, highlights of which can be seen in the museum’s nine galleries. Brian Dursum, director of the Lowe Art Museum since 1990, announced his retirement in September 2013.

Part of the UM College of Arts & Sciences, the Lowe also mounts distinguished temporary exhibitions throughout the year, accompanied by an array of complementary programming. With its mission to serve the University of Miami, greater South Florida communities and national and international visitors as a teaching and exhibiting resource, the Lowe Art Museum presents a unique art experience, with broad-based collections and one-of-a-kind works of art.

A fellow of the American Academy in Rome, Deupi wrote her doctoral dissertation on art and cultural politics in 18th century Naples. Her prior museum experience includes work at the Royal Academy of Arts, London; the Art Institute of Chicago, the Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, Indiana; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Wallace Collection, London. Although her area of scholarly expertise is 18th century European art, neoclassicism, and museology, Deupi possesses an impressive breadth of art historical knowledge: she has curated exhibitions devoted to 20th and 21st century photography; mid-century American painting; contemporary sculpture; ancient Chinese funerary sculpture; 20th century portraiture; and 20th century Venetian glass (among others).

Highlights from Deupi’s programming achievements include the establishment of a distinguished lecture series in the visual arts, funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation; the implementation of a successful Family Day program at the Bellarmine Museum; and the development of a broad range of programming in arts education and engagement, including a cultural tours abroad program. She also worked tirelessly to secure significant external support from a range of donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations.

Deupi received her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and her J.D. from American University’s Washington College of Law, graduating summa cum laude. She holds both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of London’s Birkbeck College and the University of Virginia, respectively. She serves as a board member of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG) and co-chair of the New England Museums Association (NEMA)’s Academic Professional Affinity Group. Talk About it Tuesday: B.E.A.T. Bringing Education and Art Together

homephotosmall2

B.E.A.T. is a nonprofit organization based in New York City that has created a space for urban youth to thrive and get involved in the community. B.E.A.T. was created to give the students who are overlooked or underprivileged a chance to participate in some awesome programs.  B.E.A.T. currently offers three programs for students, Beat Rockers, Beat Breakers and Beat Makers.

Beat Rockers is a program created to teach the blind or visually impaired students how to beat box. Instructed by Taylor McFerrin and Chesney Snow, Beat Rockers was created to empower its students by not teaching them how to play an instrument, but teaching them how they themselves are the instruments. The second program called, Beat Breakers, directed by Ken Swift and Bboy WaAak1, is an after school Bboy/Bgirl program, which teaches students break dancing and the history of how it began. The third program called, Beat Makers is an after-school career development and music production program run on the iPad2 by instructor Michael Edwards, also known as DJ Dhundee. This program teaches students all aspects of what it takes to be a producer and teaches them that it takes hard work, professionalism and devotion to succeed in a career.

All programs at B.E.A.T. are free and all programs have been designed to inspire students by engaging them in challenging and exciting activities. B.E.A.T.’s mission is to help mold a new generation of leaders and creative thinkers who will not only inspire themselves, but also inspire the generations to come.

Check out B.E.A.T. here!

Like B.E.A.T. ? Donate here to support the program!

What do you think about the B.E.A.T. program? How do you think students in Miami could benefit from a program similar to this? Let us know on Twitter at @Loop305 with the hashtag #TalkAboutitTuesday

Wynwood Brewing Co. Starts Artist’s Showcase with Works by Ernesto Kunde 6/14/14

Wynwood Brewing Co. Starts Artist’s Showcase with Works by Ernesto Kunde
THE VAGABONDSaturday, June 14, 2014 at 5 pm.
The WBCo. Tap Room
565 NW 24th Street
Wynwood Art District, Miami, FL

The Wynwood Brewing Company recently announced plans to start a rotating monthly Artist’s Showcase at its Tap Room. The WBCo. will feature solo-exhibitions of renowned local artists. The first show will be dedicated to the art of Ernesto Kunde and will open during the June Wynwood Art Walk.

Since it’s opening in September 2013, the Wynwood Brewing Company has been known for its support of the local art scene. Its Tap Room and brewery are a mini gallery of Miami’s best known street artists like TrekSix, CP1, Krave Art, Eva Ruiz, Kazilla, Ruben Ubiera, and Ernesto Kunde. The mural by Kunde, located above the Tap Room bar, is part of the artist’s “Miami Series” and shows the street sign of I-95 going towards Miami Beach. Continuing with the tradition already started with this mural, Ernesto will be showcasing paintings from the “Miami Series” on the WBCo’s Tap Room walls.

“My Miami series is inspired by the vibrant and unique Deco architecture and by the daily rhythms of the city. When I first moved to Miami 8 years ago, I saw changes coming rapidly. Many of the old buildings were being torn down or remodeled. My goal in this series has been to preserve a bit of history while at the same time offering tribute to this exciting city in which we live.” – Kunde explained.

The father and son team – Luis and “Pops” Brignoni – couldn’t be happier about starting this art series in the Tap Room.

“We envision a monthly show with renowned local artists in order to showcase and promote their work. Our vision for the Tap Room and the Brewery has always been to be an extension of the artistic atmosphere of the Wynwood Arts District. From our tap handles to our walls we are inspired everyday to create our beers like works of art.”

As part of the exhibition, the artists will be asked to create a WBCo “tap handle” that will be a signature art piece to be kept in the tap room. The idea is to create a collection of “Handmade in Miami” tap handles that could be later exhibited as a group.

On Saturday, June 14th the WBCo. will also tap a special cask in honor of the opening. An oak-aged Father Francisco with key lime craft will be served for the first time.

Ernesto Kunde’s “Miami Series” will be on exhibit at the Wynwood Brewing Co. Tap Room from Saturday, June 14 through Sunday, July 6, 2014. The Wynwood Brewing is located at 565 NW 24th Street, Miami, FL. Hours of Operation are Tues -Thur 2 – 11 pm, Fri. 2 pm – midnight, Sat. 12 pm – midnight, Sun. 12 pm – 10 pm.

Music Monday: Raffa and Rainer

raffa rainer 2

If you haven’t heard of Miami natives and musical duo Raffa and Rainer, you are missing out! Raffa and Rainer have lived in Miami for a combined 58 years and their music has a unique laid back Miami flair.   It all began in 2005 when Raffa Jo Harris and Rainer Davies got together playing weekly at The Tree of Zion vegan café. They started off playing for small crowds and have been making music together ever since!   After that they went on to play at Can You Rock a Little Softer, a weekly open mic, which was hosted from 2007-2009 at Churchhill’s Pub in Miami. Sometimes they would only make $10 per night, but that didn’t discourage them from continuing to perform! They didn’t necessarily make the money they were looking for at Can You Rock a Little Softer, but they did gain a large following and earn a lot of respect in the Miami music scene.

Due to the respect they gained, Raffa and Rainer had no trouble when it came to finding support for the creation of their albums. They put out their first album in 2005 called, Stolen Coal and their more recent album is titled, No Mercy, which they produced in 2009.  The Miami New Times Best Of Awards dubbed Raffa and Rainer the Best Acoustic Performers of Miami in 2010. Check out their music and these two folk legends in the Miami music scene here: https://myspace.com/raffaandrainer/music/songs

Ostaria Boccadoro, Venice, Italy Review

Ostaria Boccadoro has the Best Seafood in Venice

By Ari Kane, Photographs by Daniella Veras

Boccadoro-29

Strolling along the narrow sidewalks off the beaten tourist path, we were not sure if we were lost or just mesmerized by the color and novelty of this place. That is until we came across a quiet little square where we found Ostaria Boccadoro.

Do you know how you can gauge the freshness of a seafood restaurant? When, as you are having a drink (or in when in Italy, an aperitivo) the morning catch is dropped off at the restaurant for lunch.  The exquisite Ostaria Boccadoro, is located in the magical and unique city of Venice.  The name Boccadoro, translated as “golden mouth” from Italian (bocca d’oro), suits this place divinely.  The owner Chef Luciano Orlandi is profoundly charming and quite funny. The fanciful and refined restaurant specializes in offering the freshest seafood. Their menu is highly dependent on what’s available at the Rialto market. Even the napkins, made of fine linen, appeared freshly pressed. Our sweet, cool and sexy bartender/waiter/friend Luca made us amazing drinks upon arrival. Plop, bang, puff, squeak, trash! Everyday objects and their sonic expressions as evidenced in the popular and experimental music cultures become alive in a new electronic music set, sound installation and happening by the Brooklyn-based Swede Adrian Knight and the Slovakian-Miamian Juraj Kojs. Lucid streams of musical bubbles and clouds will pulsate into dadaist trashness, filled with nostalgia and humor. Not to be missed on the night that marks 115 years since the “American Temperance crusader Carrie Nation began her campaign of vandalizing alcohol-serving establishments by destroying the inventory in a saloon in Kiowa, Kansas” (wiki).
BYOEO: Bring your own everyday object that sounds and join!

Fête de la Musique, a global celebration of music on the summer solstice, comes to Big Night in Little Haiti this month on June 20 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. The inspiration behind Fete, which began in Paris in 1982, is to welcome summer with free music. Prior to the main stage concert by popular young Haitian kompa group Gabel, there will be an open stage for the public to make music. Gabel began with a bang in 2006 – prestigious Kompa Magazine named the young Haitian group “New Band of the Year”. They have lived up to the promise – their fourth studio album will be released this June; they have 12 music videos, have played at two karnavals and are touring throughout the Caribbean, Europe and the US.

Local Heroes: James Echols

james-annette-bymitchellzachs

Bio:

James Echols has been working as an entrepreneur, event producer and business coach for over 25 years. Before moving to Miami, he has been a retail store owner, Vice-President of Operations for a startup Renaissance Festival, a consultant, a teacher and ran a pop culture convention. Since   moving to Miami over eleven years ago, he has become very involved in the   community. In July of 2008, he started the very popular community-resource website, Soul Of Miami, with his partner Annette Peikert. In January of 2009, James co-founded Life Is Art, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to creating postive change in the community with the arts and culture through events and education. Life Is Art has enjoyed considerable success, producing over 70 shows, seminars, and networkers over the past five years. Being so in touch with the community, he noticed a need for greater support for other philanthropic organizations operating in south Florida and so co-founded PhilanthroFest in April of 2012 as an annual festival promoting philanthropy and community engagement.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

I have never had a mentor. When I was a young entrepreneur, I read numerous business books and magazines. Two that I found particularly useful were “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” and “Inc.” magazine. I also joined a variety of professionals organizations and received quite a   lot of business guidance from the more experienced members, who made a big difference.

How did you get to where you are today?

I drove. I mean, I’m not really sure where I am today. I visited Miami a few times as a tourist and liked the place, so eventually I packed up all   my stuff and drove here.

How did you get to be a community leader?

Because somebody has to do it and I’m too impatient to wait for others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I don’t have that kind of vision. I just do the best I can. We have plans   to grow Soul Of Miami and Life Is Art so that we can serve the community better. I would love to see us doing so in a much larger way, in a larger   community.

What about this city inspires you?

The problems. What most people call problems, I see as opportunity. Things need fixing and that means someone needs to fix them. That someone could be me. Finish these sentences:

Miami should be… An international cosmopolitan city full of opportunity.

Miami could be… One of the great cities of the world.

Miami wants to be… Miami doesn’t know what it wants to be, yet. There are a lot of amazing people shaping that future right now.

Miami needs… More self-confidence.

I Terzi di Siena Review

Enjoy Celestial Views at I Terzi di Siena

By Ari Kane, Photographs by Daniella Veras

Siena-76

Siena is a gorgeous city in the Tuscan region of Italy, rich with tradition, food and majestic landscapes and architecture. We spent an amazing two days and one night at I Terzi di Siena which is a beautiful place to really absorb the allure of Siena. I Terzi is conveniently located near Piazza di Campo (Campo Square), which is the center of town. A cool makeshift horse race is held in the Campo once a year. I Terzi is located in one of the tallest and oldest buildings in Siena and offers its guests breathtaking views of  the Sienese rooftops, Cathedral and magnificent sunsets.

Siena-86

We had the pleasure of viewing a glorious sunset from the terrace while drinking wine and hanging out with a couple from Australia and another from Germany. From the terrace, one can admire the Torre del Mangia (Mangia Tower), the Siena Cathedral, the Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico (Church of San Domenico) or just gaze off and lose yourself in one of the best views in all of Siena. #ThankYouMiami for Fashion – H&M Grand Opening

H&M-Miami-International-Mall-Grand-Opening

There was once a dark time in the lives of South Florida H&M lovers when we had to travel many miles northward to shop the latest trends. Luckily, that time has passed and the distance between us and the nearest H&M store has grown progressively shorter. Tomorrow’s grand opening of an H&M store at the Miami International Mall is but another magnificent milestone toward brighter days. Here the three facts you need to know about the new 22,000 square foot store that will make more of Miami’s fashion dreams come true!

1. It is the second of its kind in the Miami metro area. The first store opened on Lincoln Road in 2012 at the historic Lincoln Theatre. True to a statement Daniel Kulle, U.S. president for H&M, made regarding the opening of its preview pop-up shop: “The opening…signifies the beginning of a strong relationship between H&M and Miami shoppers.” The feeling is mutual, Mr. Kulle.

2. It offers fashion for the whole family. The store will be stocked with our favorite collections for ladies, men, and children, including clothing for newborns. Age is no longer an excuse to not look your very best, Miami.

3. It will help you reduce your carbon footprint. Yes, you read correctly. H&M’s global garment recycling program gives you 15% off your purchase for every bag of old and unwanted clothing items that you donate in-store, regardless of their brand. So, go ahead, reduce, reuse, recycle…and shop.

The store will open at noon tomorrow, Thursday, May 29th. The first 100 shoppers in line will receive an H&M t-shirt and an Access to Fashion Pass (valued up to $300). Also, shoppers who bring garments to be recycled before noon will have the chance to win H&M gift cards valued between $50 and $100 in addition to receiving 15% off. Happy shopping!

Public Art Wednesday: PortMiami

Miami public art

A must see in Miami is the recent public art addition that is now featured in the beautiful PortMiami thanks to the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program. Jim Dain created the beautiful Bollard Project and Bhakti Baxter made Coral Reef City, which enhanced the area of PortMiami and gave local residents and vacationers a wonderful sight to see.

PortMiami is one of America’s busiest ports attracting more then 4 million cruise vacationers each year into the hub of Miami. Artist Bhakti Baxter is actually a Miami native who received his BFA at the New World School of the Arts College in Miami, Florida. His art has been featured worldwide and he gets much of his inspiration from investigation of science and spirituality. Jim Drain is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but now calls the lovely city of Miami home. His artwork has been featured throughout the US and Europe and in 2005 he was awarded the Baloise Prize for his Statements project at Art Basil!

The Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program strives to serve the community through the implementation of art. This program was created to enrich and enhance the Miami art scene, while promoting collaborations and creative art ventures. The Miami-Dade Art in public places was one of the first public art programs in the country created back in 1973. To date the program has created or acquired more then 650 art projects in Miami, creating and even more beautiful Miami!

#NegroniWeek 2014

Negroni WeekAt Chat Chow TV, we are big fans of the Negroni. We are even bigger fans of giving back to the community while drinking a Negroni — and during Negroni Week (June 2 – 8, 2014) everyone will have the opportunity to do both.

For Negroni Week, more than ten different restaurants and bars around Miami, and hundreds more around the country, will feature a Negroni Week special. A portion of the proceeds from each sale of the Negroni during that week will go to the charity of the venue’s choosing.

But the it doesn’t stop there. If you check in via social media using the hashtag #NegroniWeek, Campari will donate an additional $1 per mention, up to $10,000, to charity. Plus the bar or restaurant that has the most #NegroniWeek mentions at the end of the promotion will get another $10,000 donated to their designated charity.

We’ve highlighted some of the Negronis we are most looking forward to below, but if you want a cheat sheet of where to find special Negroni Week drinks around town make sure to print out the Negroni Passport and get it stamped knowing you’re drinking a delicious drink and giving back to a good cause!

L’osteria di Giovanni in Florence, Italy Review

L’osteria di Giovanni will Delight your Palates

By Ari Kane, Photographs by Daniella Veras

Giovannis-Firenze-40

L’osteria di Giovanni is an impressive, third generation family run restaurant in Florence. The food was outstanding, the service was marvelous and the ambiance was so refined and welcoming. It exuded a very trendy vibe with famous art adorning the walls.  It is a beautiful restaurant located just north over the Ponte alla Corraria Bridge on the north side of Florence.

Giovannis-Firenze-143

We had the pleasure of meeting Caterina, the sweet chef turned manager. When the restaurant manager is a chef you know that all plates out of the kitchen will be up to par. Matteo, who is also a musician, was our attentive waiter.  They got us off to a great start with a complimentary fried pasta starter that we likened to phenomenal salty elephant ears.

The Goose Breast Carpaccio was a savory epiphany. It was one of our favorite dishes in all of Italy. The smoked goose breast was doused with balsamic vinegar to create a heavenly taste. It was so intensely rich and scrumptious. The fatty thin sliced meat with the amazing smoky flavor and balsamic taste will blow you away. If it is not on the menu, ask for it anyway. Talk about it Tuesday: Houston Arts Alliance

logo

The city of Houston has used its economic advantages and large diverse population to keep the creative arts thriving successfully. Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States allowing approximately 6.1 million people to call it home. Houston Arts Alliance is an extremely successful nonprofit arts organization that thrives on enhancing the city by supporting and promoting arts through programs initiatives and alliances. Houston Arts Alliance enables artists and art organizations to succeed by connecting nonprofit art programs to the larger creative Houston Industry.

The Houston Arts Alliance website provides annual reports that document the success they have had with expanding and promoting the creative arts economy in Houston. A Survey conducted by The Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University concluded that 73% of people surveyed claimed that the arts significantly contributed to their quality of life. The HAA has also created an online arts funding program called power2give.org as well as investing in the work of more then 250 Houston arts organizations and artists. In partnership with Americans for the Arts National Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study, reveal that Houston’s local nonprofit arts industry generates $869 million in total economic activity annually. This study, which is conducted every five years, also showed that Houston’s arts support the full-time equivalent of 19,651 jobs and displays a 39% increase in Harris County Texas from 2005-2010.

How can other cities, implement successful creative arts programs as well? Can the model used by the Houston Arts Alliance be applied to other cities, such as Miami to keep the arts thriving?

This project aims at developing kids’ soccer talents and forming them into great players by employing the training philosophy and methodology used by both F.C. Inter adult and youth teams. Inter Academy Florida is geared towards boys and girls 4-17 and offers three different program options: Camp, Academy, and Recreational. The summer camp program officially begins on June 9th and will run through August 1st in 1-week sessions; it is currently open for enrollment online and will also be accepting registrations during open house event. For optimal convenience, camp program will be offering day and evening sessions at four different locations, two in Miami-Dade County and two in Broward County. Young soccer lovers will not want to pass the opportunity to join this world-class academy.

The uniqueness of Inter Academy Florida lies in the direct access members will have to training resources of the professional soccer team abroad, and having a former pro soccer player fronting the entire program. These dynamics will allow participants to get first-hand game strategy, coaching and structured talent development, in order to improve their game in a fun and safe environment. Inter Academy Florida has three programs for kids 4-17: Camp (summer season June 9 – August 1, 2014; camps also available during winter and spring in 1-week sessions), Elite Academy (tryouts for 2014-2015 competitive season are May 27 – June 1, 2014 and training will start in August), and Recreational (available during fall and spring in 9-week sessions). Also available, private lessons with Riccardo Ferri, scouting days with college and professional coaches, and Inter Academy Florida Cares (free games for kids with disabilities).

The Chianti and Truffle Tour in Florence, Italy

The Chianti and Truffle Tour is Sensational

By Ari Kane, Photographs by Daniella Veras

Chianti-Truffle-Tour-26

The Chianti and Truffle Tour, run by the astute and charming Vittorio Del Bono Venezze, is one of the best tours we have ever been on.  He picks you up in Florence and takes you to San Miniato to experience truffle hunting, followed by a great truffle lunch and capped off by a visit to a marvelous boutique winemaker for a wine course and tasting.

Truffles are a gift from the heavens.  Just the thought of these magnificent mushrooms induces salivation in our truffle-addicted mouths. They are impossible to farm so they must be found in the wild. According to our hunter, ever year there are less truffle growing areas because they are contaminated by man. Once an area is ruined, it will not grow truffles again. The areas where truffles are found were such a secret, that even fathers would not tell their children until they were on their deathbeds.  We were driven to San Miniato, a tiny 1,000 hectares city renowned for its truffles, and introduced to a very experienced truffle hunter, his wife and their cute hunting dogs.

There are a variety of truffles that grow seasonally. The famous Winter White truffle grows only from October through December. It is the most expensive truffle and can sell for $3,000 a pound some years! The “cheaper” truffles are the summer black and spring white truffles that are much more affordable and still delectable.

Dogs are trained to hunt for a year and a half starting when they are puppies. These lucky puppies are given truffles in their milk. We wish our mothers had put truffles in our baby formula. While both male and female dogs can hunt, our guide claimed that females are superior.  According to our guide, the males tend to get too distracted with a different type of hunt…as in for a female partner.

Once you find a spot that produces truffles, it will produce truffles again but you are never sure when they will spring up.  The hunter goes back to the same spots each time in the hopes of finding more.

Our hunt was fun, informative and picturesque, so make sure to bring a camera. The hunter’s adorable dog named Nebia, is a hyperactive mixed breed with a prize-winning nose. She found a bunch of lil truffles during our hunt. A hunt only lasts for 3-4 hours(ours was under 2) because the dog’s nose gets desensitized after that period. Below you can see a video of Nebia as she finds a truffle. Continue reading “The Chianti and Truffle Tour in Florence, Italy”

“A journey into the evolution of a Miami native art duo. Their characters are fragments of their life, portraits of distant memories. Inspired by the idea of culture and its everlasting impression.”

Opening Reception : May 8th, 2014 6pm-11pm
Exhibit Dates : May 8th – May 30th, 2014

We are Yuhmi (Yuh + Mi), Michelle Vazquez and Victor Vazquez a Miami native art duo. We started collaborating in 2009 on design based work, and in 2012 officially became an art duo. We specialize in painting illustrations, murals, installations, and toy designs.

Our characters are an ode to our life. A collaborative unified vision. A continuos narrative inspired by all of our memories, dreams and culture. Traditional and popular culture alike.

We paint portraits of people and animals, sometimes creating super human hybrid creatures by mashing them together. We like to think of them as our spirit animals.

Let your imagination run wild & journey into our floating world.

“The wishy washy world of beautiful human creatures. Peaceful sea of fantastical beings, where the ocean has no end and the world is shaped eternally.”

Ristorante Dorando in San Gimignano, Italy Review

Ristorante Dorando is a Small Town Gem

By Ari Kane, Photographs by Daniella Veras

Dorando-San-Gimignano-36

Ristorante Dorando is a delectable spot located in the nostalgic, ancient walled city of San Gimignano. Dorando has earned a reputation as one of the best places to dine at in this quaint city and is included in the city’s Michelin Guide. The restaurant’s 14th century arched brick walls and ceiling lends it a historically gorgeous veneer. It was such a joy to dine in a unique and venerable setting where you feel as if you were taken aback to a historic wine cellar (which, funny enough, we actually happen to be in.)

 Dorando-San-Gimignano-5

Ristorante Dorando adeptly fuses classic Tuscan dishes with a modern and creative flair. The plates are attractive as well as delicious.  The home grown and cordial Chef Duccio presented some of his classic dishes and enlightened us about the history of Etruscan food, the restaurant and of his city.
