MCCJ is thrilled to announce that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Emmy Award winning journalist, Michel Martin. Ms. Martin joined NPR after a long career at ABC News. Her national radio show on NPR, Tell Me More, is powered by her own interest and focuses heavily on topics of race, religion and spirituality.
Martin has had an illustrious journalistic career. After working the local news beat for The Washington Post and becoming White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Martin joined ABC News in 1992. At ABC, she reported for Nightline and was awarded an Emmy for a report that aired on Day One. In 2001, she hosted the PBS show Life 360. Since April 2007, she has hosted the one-hour daily NPR news and talk show, which covers everything from immigration to parenting in a multicultural family. “I am fascinated by people who live lives different from my own, and at the same time, I feel connected to all of these lives being a journalist, a woman of color, a wife and mother,†said Martin.
NPR fans are welcome to register for this breakfast, where they’ll have an opportunity to chat with the journalist. The Hank Meyers Award has traditionally gone to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community, including Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., and last year, ABC’s John Quiñones.

Exhaustion is the debut exhibition by 2J, a new collaborative venture between sculptor Justin Beal and painter Jesse Willenbring. Building on Beal’s background as an architect and Willenbring’s background as a graphic designer, 2J is a hybridized approach to object-making based on refined geometries and extreme surface treatments. Images culled from both artists’ archives of source material are printed and painted directly on glass with varying degrees of transparency and arranged in space like so many layers of a photoshop files rendered at an architecturalscale. Treating images with a sculptural sensibility, 2J produces furniture, objects and installations that collapse the boundary between surface and support and undermine the conventional binaries of repression and expression that so often divide the realms of design and art.
Exhaustion is a site-specific installation designed to address both Locust Project’s interior architecture and its location at the center of Miami’s Design District. The exhibition includes tables and walls made from steel and glass and layered with imagery from a variety of sources, including Marco Zanini’s designs for Memphis Milano, pre-digital print advertisements for Hilti Tools, Geoffrey Beene and Herman Miller and scans from Egon von Furstenberg’s seminal book Decorating for Men: The Power Look at Home. The tables and walls throughout the gallery support a series of vertical and horizontal glass planes that divide the space into layers of superimposed and overlapping imagery. Each glass panel is printed with a directto-substrate digital printing method more commonly associated with commercial signage and advertising. The images in the exhibition, many of which have previously appeared both in print and in Willenbring and Beal’s work, have been recycled, repeated and manipulated to the point of exhaustion and then redeployed as part of 2J’s visual language. As a final gesture, a selection of works by Beal and Willenbring will hang on and amidst the walls.

Marlins Think Tank Week

Elementary and Middle Schools across Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties
The Marlins Think Tank is an online curriculum-enhancement program that utilizes the Miami Marlins as the basis for learning. Marlins Think Tank aims to enrich the learning experiences of children in grades 4-6 by linking baseball to the curriculum areas of writing, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health & fitness. The program provides lesson plans which meet Common Core State Standards as adopted by the Florida Department of Education, with the Miami Marlins as the lesson theme.
All 4th-6th grade classrooms in South Florida are eligible to receive a visit from Miami Marlins players, coaches and broadcasters during Marlins Think Tank Week. To participate in the contest, classrooms complete a lesson plan and submit it to the Miami Marlins. This year, 16 classrooms were selected at random as winners of the contest. During Think Tank Week, the entire 25-man roster canvases elementary and middle schools across South Florida.
Marlins Ayudan (Spanish for “helpâ€) is the signature outreach initiative of the Miami Marlins. The purpose of Marlins Ayudan is to provide a sustainable corps of volunteers willing and ready to effectuate positive change in the South Florida community. It is the fabric of the Club’s corporate culture and engages every front office employee with schools and charities throughout South Florida. The goal of Marlins Ayudan is to leave a lasting legacy through impactful service activities that tackle the community’s most pressing needs. The three-tier Ayudan methodology consists of organizational service days, team events and individual volunteer opportunities. Since its inception in 2010, Marlins Ayudan has contributed over 22,000 hours of service and established partnerships and traditions of giving that inspire employees to pursue their passions and contribute their time and talents year-round.

Jonathan Brooks
Jonathan Brooks is an award winning photographer/visual artist, whose work has been exhibited in Art Basel Miami, New York City, Amsterdam, and the United Kingdom. Brooks graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Advertising and Fine Art Photography from the University of Miami. He recently launched his line of Teach&Greet Bilingual Greeting Cards on CardGnome.com. He is a rare Miami native who currently writes and photographs reviews for GreatFoodList.com and is the shop owner of Jonathan Brooks Visual Arts on Etsy.com. As a 2013 top ten finalist in the RED, Carl Zeiss, Adobe , HD Video Pro and Digital Video Pro magazines’ 7th Annual Emerging Pro Still & Motion Competition, he just finished his first short film 5 SKULLS, which can be found on vimeo or youtube. He is also currently trying to fund his The True Cuba book project on Kickstarter.

I am an Artisan, and I am a maker of Alchemic Contrivances… with fanciful natures that are intriguing, fun, and a bit absurd – with a daring dash of Steampunk!
And these Contrivances, they come from what? you ask. Well, to answer that in a roundabout way, I’ll start you with a bit of my background. My interests are manifold. I had the opportunity to grow up near the Smithsonian museums and the National Gallery of Art. Visiting these was an oft loved adventure. Another adventure I love is reading: Science-fiction, history, and whatever I could pore through in the sciences.
I was fascinated by such classics as “The Time Machine,†“Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,†“Frankenstein,†and last but not least “Green Eggs and Ham.†These worlds are filled with adventure, strange devices, and many curiosities; indeed the many stories and movies of the like filled my life with imagination and creative energy.
My pieces, fabricated individually from an amalgam of both old and contemporary parts, are born from these stories. They are fashioned from a day before mass production and describe, today, a retro-futuristic style.
These days I’ll often be found in what I call my Lab tinkering, aside my Alchemist Lamp, with devices that may have been found in any of these stories.
Edwive Seme
Edwive Seme is an emerging artist in Miami who has spent most of his life drawing from the inspirations he got from cartoons. He continuously evolve his style and explore new grounds to not only grow as an artist but to also present something fresh to whoever sees his work. He wants to question the world as we know it through his artworks and therefore always tries to focus as much on the subject matter as the quality in his works. When he draws/ paints, he involves himself in the process as much as possible, so that he can become connected to everything he creates; in a way each piece of art is a piece of him. He believes this is one of the best ways to create because having a connection to his creations brings out a certain passion, which can be seen in the final product. His ultimate goal in the final product is to provide visual pleasure, mental turbulence and questioning, and emotional connection.

We provide service programs through Service Corp to help local sustainable businesses and nonprofits by offering our skills, expertise, and knowledge as working professionals to help organizations overcome their challenges to becoming more successful. The Service Corp programs are performed quarterly with the help of a rotating expert Panel, chosen every month from professionals in sustainability, running nonprofits, and entrepreneurs who have faced and overcame similar challenges as those we help.
Badges of Courage Foundation
Badges of Courage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded by Macarena Zilveti in 2010. Her great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and aun had breast cancer and were all survivors. After her mother had a radical mastectomy, Macarena knew she had to do something to help others afflicted with this terrible disease. The Badges of Courageâ„¢ were created to help raise funds and to pay tribute to these strong and courageous women.
The foundation provides patients who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and in treatment, with basic living expenses such as mortgage and rent payments, child care payments, utilities, food, medical insurance premiums, and other life necessities. Our goal is to give these women tranquility and hope at a time when they need it most— when they are faced with breast cancer.

Organizers of Wynwood Life couldn’t be happier. The street festival that promised to fill the street of Wynwood’s 6th Avenue with art and music lovers drew close to 18,000 people over the course of three days. Wynwood Life street fest over-delivered on what it promised in the areas of art, music, fashion and fun! “Lots of cool people. Lots of great vibe. Art was created, showed and sold. Music was danced to and fashion was strutted. We were proud to have Trek6 involved as our first poster artists. Wynwood Life is here to stay, and we hope to see everyone back next year,†said Tony Albelo, Wynwood Life organizer.
In the spirit of showcasing local talent, the festival featured Miami style bloggers, who turned heads during their own fashion show hosted by Kelly Saks. On Saturday night, the Peroni Art & Fashion Stage featured a bathing suit fashion show hosted by Annie Vazquez. Sunday night’s show was put on by Style Mafia, Jane Rose and Miami fashion blogger Maya King.
People came from all over South Florida to see the 11 live art displays curated by WynwoodMap.com, which featured graffiti artists including Gons One w/ SSK, Luis Berros, Diana Contreras and Luis Valle. What they got was all 11 plus a bonus live art display from DeepInPaint body painter, Shannon De Freitas.
Baloji, the Congolese-Belgium hip hop artists, who performed on Friday night, was a total hit, with thousands of new fans jamming to his contagious rhythm. It was standing room only on Saturday night with Problem Kids rocking the house, and on Sunday, Suénalo brought their fan base with their eclectic hip hop, Spanish infused vibe to the stage.
To close the festival, Wynwood Life had a music and art mashup that featured DJ Mr. Pauer, Miami’s Latin Grammy® nominated artist/producer, on stage while graffiti artist Hec One Love painted in front of the stage to the beat of his music. Hec One Love is well known for collaborating with Trek6 on the mural “Lovismâ€. Meanwhile over at the Peroni Art & Fashion stage, an impromptu collaborative painting took place between Kazilla and Coinslot, making this festival an eye-catching experience.

The 2014 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup X, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo competition, culminated on Sunday, April 27th with an exciting men’s final that marked the tournament’s Ten Year Anniversary, a decade of world class cavalry and social fun in the sun.
Thursday, April 24th opened with a series of hard fought matches during the competition’s first day of the La Martina South Beach Women’s Polo Cup VI, as female teams battled it out to claim the prestigious title.
The eight teams of women, consisting of players from all over the world, competed in two divisions of play for the sixth consecutive year with the team from La Martina (Scarlet Davenport, Maggie McNamara and Laura Willson) taking top honors in Division One with a 2-1 win over the Eden Roc/Cheeki team (Kaila Doud, Slaney O’Hanlon and Lynn O’Connor). Doud was named MVP while Laura Willson’s “Little Joe†received Best Playing Pony honors.
FontaineBleau Aviation (Lynda Mariano, Sabina Barnett and Kerstie Allen) won Division Two in convincing fashion, in a 7-1 defeat of the Jet Blue team (Coco Smith, Bobette Martin and Leah Masters). Kerstie Allen scored all seven goals for FontaineBleau Aviation to earn MVP honors in her division, with her horse “Kai†taking Best Playing Pony honors.
The opening match of the tenth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup men’s competition on Friday, April 26th saw a parity in the 2:00pm match with The Raleigh team representing Pakistan beating the La Martina team, representing Argentina, in the final seconds, 11-10. Heightening the excitement on the day, the 3:00pm match up had the Yellow Cab team, representing Russia, defeating the talented Metropolitan by COMO team, representing USA, in a triple overtime shoot out, resulting in a 7-6 score. In the final game of the day, the Merchant Hub team, representing Brazil, saw Luis Escobar scoring nine goals, including a pair of 2-pointers, for a 10-8 victory over the Eden Roc/La Herradura team, representing Mexico.
Some fast paced action on the sands of Miami Beach on Saturday set the scene for Sunday’s finals of the 2015 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup with the team from The Raleigh Hotel, representing Pakistan (2-0), and the team from Yellow Cab, representing Russia (2-0) making their way to the finals of the competition’s 10 Year Anniversary.
Pakistan (Bash Kazi, Juan Monteverde and Brandon Phillips) opened Saturday’s action with an 8-7 win over a plucky Metropolitan by COMO team, representing USA (Lance Vetter, Guille Usandizaga and John Gobin), winning their second match in two days and securing a place in the finals. In the day’s second game, the team from Yellow Cab, representing Russia (Tyler Garber, Tavi Usandizaga and Sebastian Merlos) spanked the Eden Roc team, representing Mexico 13-8. It was Russia’s second win that paved the way for their appearance in Sunday’s title game.
The La Martina team, representing Argentina (MZ. Kazi, David Tafuri, Carlitas Gracida and Tommy Biddle) upset the team from Merchant Hub, representing Brazil (Tommy Kato, Pelan Escapite and Luis Escobar) run for the title by holding on for a 7-6 win in the final seconds of play.

Attendees at this year’s La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup experienced the annual series of VIP events that took place each night and in to the early hours. Specialty cocktails courtesy of Perfect Vodka were served as players, patrons and sponsor representatives mingled at the Metropolitan by COMO, Baoli, Adore nightclub and SLS Hotel South Beach, as part of a very active after-hours social schedule. During the day on Saturday, La Martina showcased its latest lines of contemporary styles during an elegantly produced fashion show in the VIP tent. On Sunday, Lou La Vie presented Auto Art Miami, a curated installation of 50 of the world’s most significant automobiles, valued at over $100 million and installed throughout Collins Park for art lovers, enthusiasts and design aficionados to enjoy before, during and after the tournament’s match play.
The traditional post-event awards ceremony was held at the end of each tournament to celebrate the winning teams from both competitions, during which Robert Kiger, owner of Elegante Polo, presented the trophy to the women’s champions and Adrian Simonetti, president of La Martina, did the honors for the men’s.
This year’s La Martina South Beach Women’s Polo Cup VI and La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup X was sponsored by La Martina, Lou La Vie (Auto Art Miami), Mecum Yacht Auctions, Perfect Vodka and A&E, with support from the GMCVB and Miami Beach VCA.
More than 10,000 people attended this year’s La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup over the four days, and the tournament featured the world’s top professional polo players from as far as Russia, Switzerland and Malaysia, as well as the very best from South America.

Flight is an exhibition, curated by Deborah Mitchell, that presents new work by artists who participated in the AIRIE residency at Everglades National Park. The artists in the exhibition each spent a month living and working in the park, immersed in the ecological and cultural concerns of the River of Grass. Their works explore many facets of our cultural experience of nature in this World Heritage Site. In Flight, the Everglades are considered through aerial views of suburban encroachment, birds taking wing, the ethereal nature of wind, and even the stark contrast of nuclear missiles housed deep in the wilderness.

Contemporary Flamenco guitarist and composer from Spain Jose Luis Rodriquez performs his dynamic new project Resonancias. The project includes a live performance of original guitar and electronic compositions by Jose Luis Rodriguez , featuring special guest artist Gustavo Matamoros, Alex Jordan on second guitar, and movement interventions by Niurca Marquez that at once instigate, incite, threaten, and invite Rodriguez to step outside of his comfort zone on stage. These are enveloped in the artistry of filmmaker Carla Forte and the dramaturgy and scenic design of Guggenheim Fellowship Recipient Alexey Taran, which functions as a living installation within the work.

Rosa Rosae an exhibition showcasing the exceptional works by talented artists Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco begins Saturday, May 17th.
An invitation only reception for an advance viewing of the exhibition will be held on Friday evening, May 16th. It is being held during Fashion Week in Miami, a moment where both art and fashion cross over in one of Miami’s most creative and exciting times of the year.
Galleria Ca’ d’Oro is honored to announce an exhibition showcasing the exceptional works by talented artists Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco. Curated by Gloria Porcella, director and owner of the famous Roman and Miami Galleries and entitled Rosa Rosae, it is designed to bring to Miami the artistic flavor of these unique European artists.
The exhibition, beginning Saturday, May 17 and running for three weeks, will be held at the newly opened space of Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, Suite 105F, 4141 NE Second Avenue in Miami’s Design District. The Galleria’s goal is to grow together with the most talented emerging European artists by bringing quality, design and innovation to South Florida. Very different from each other in terms of style, medium, personalities and artistic orientations, Ludmilla Radchenko and Vittorio Sacco are united in this show through the theme of roses; a subject matter portrayed by both artists in one of their main works, which gave name to the exhibition, Rosa Rosae.
Ludmilla Radchenko, a young female Siberian Pop artist has the ability to blend unique and sometimes startling photographs with aspects of digital collage and lively acrylic painting to create an entirely unique art form. In the classic Pop Art style, Radchenko presents her subjects over and over, loading it with social content in order to expand and at times exploit its meaning. The bright colors and broad lines that appear as she applies paint to the digital prints serve to create new levels of meaning and also add emotive elements to the overall effect. The results are paintings that reverberate with numerous meanings meant to connect with the viewer.
Vittorio Sacco always had a great passion for photography. The artist’s work truly embodies an Italian essence that expresses a passion for food, a keen eye for simple beauty, style and design. While in New York he joined Bianchi Films where he was able to combine the graphic beauty of his still photography with the elegance of motion pictures. Throughout his career the artist has worked for many important advertising campaigns such as Lindt, Barilla and Kraft among others. Vittorio Sacco is one of those artists who make food and simple objects into poetry. They evoke in the spectator a sense of tangibility and desire to reach what is portrayed. The artist has the ability to transform simple and common everyday objects into appealing, luxurious and sensual elements, which stimulate our senses. On the other hand, his black and white photos of places are somewhat supernatural, where he immortalizes empty spaces where presence is perceived among the ruins. Primitive and yet modern they seem to evoke a post-apocalyptic scene.
Since 1970, Galleria Ca’ d’Oro (House of Gold), located near Piazza di Spagna, one of Rome’s most iconic and prestigious destinations has been renown as one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Italy representing famous figures in the art world such as Dali, de Chirico, and Filippo de Pisis. In 2010 the Gallery opened its doors in Miami. During Art Week and Art Basel Miami Galleria Ca’ d’Oro made its mark in Miami with the most talked about public art installations, the Regeneration Art Project, the exhibition of the famous Pink snails and during Art Basel Miami 2012, with the FOReverglades project. In 2013 the Galleria participated in distinguished Art Fairs such as Context-Art Miami, Scope New York and Art Wynwood Miami. The same year the gallery successfully reintroduced 8 Giant Red Snails in Central Park and Columbus Circle in New York City. The installation’s popularity demonstrated once again the international prestige and acclaim of the gallery in the US.
Today with its new location in the Miami Design District Galleria Ca’ d’Oro lead by Owner and Director Gloria Porcella continues to bring its experience and expertise to the US promoting Italian and European contemporary art with passion and enthusiasm. Galleria Ca’ d’Oro offers not only some of the most important works by artists of the 20th, and 21st centuries, but also offers personalized art advisory, the implementation of public art installations and museum quality exhibitions. Among the artists represented are Giorgio de Chirico’s Sculptures, Salvador Dali’s sculptures, Alfredo Rapetti Mogol and the famous Cracking Art Group animals by William Sweetlove, Renzo Nucara, Federico Comelli Ferrari and Ivan Lardshneider.

If a single symbol could summarize the iconic work of Leonel Matheu (Havana, 1967), this would be that enigmatic head –a sort of dome- that appears as a constant throughout his work. Self-portrait and collective portrayal of a nation marked by diaspora and dystopia, this symbol embodies the symptoms and stigma of contemporary global society.
With a masterful use of the synthetic graphic design language, Matheu builds up a personal and yet universal iconography that interweaves in intimate fables of our daily existence. Spirituality, technology, passion, solitude, dreams, chimeras and deceptions are at the core of this thoughtful body of works.
“Crossroads of the Dystopia†is the first major museum survey exhibition of this midcareer versatile artist whose work ranges from drawing with colored pencils, ink on paper, oil on canvases, video and multimedia installations, to public installations and qualification of architectural spaces. Presented by Dotfiftyone Gallery and curated by Janet Batet, the exhibition resumes moreover twenty years of work and provides a comprehensive overview of Matheu’s most distinctive imagery.
Leonel Matheu, who presently resides between Miami and Los Angeles, has been one of the figures that have marked the local arts Miami in the last twenty years. He graduated at the Institute of Graphic Design of Havana in 1987. In 1992 he settled in Miami, Florida. His artwork is part of public collections in various art museums, between them are the MOCA-Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami, The Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, The Young at Art Museum in Davie, Georgia Museum of Art at University of Georgia in Athens, The Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama, The University Art Museum in Radford University, Virginia among others.

In her 2013 article, “Trayvon Martin, Race, and Anthropology,†Dr. Leith Mullings (President, American Anthropological Association) spoke out, stepped up to, and challenged, conventional wisdom regarding “diversity.â€
“Diversity,†wrote Mullings, “has become a threadbare term used… to refer to almost any type of variation… [while] admirable…[diversity, expanded, fails] to address the historical injustices of racial exclusion…[and] obscures the systemic character of racism in the United States.
All forms of discrimination are lamentable, but they are not equal, nor even necessarily comparable, [they]…require different interventions.â€
By 2015, our nation will have commemorated several of those key, momentous, interventions targeting extant anti-Black/pro-White racist world-views, laws, systems, beliefs, attitudes, customs, and practices.

This year, Aqua Girl will host its first ever “aquaSOUNDS†fundraising concert to benefit Aqua Foundation’s LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative. The concert will take place at Grand Central on Saturday, May 17th, just before the infamous Temptation dance party.
All bands featured in the concert are from South Florida and are connected to the local LGBTQ community. The local bands will warm up the crowd for headliner Beverly McClellan of NBC’s “The Voice†who will perform as the closing act. A soulful rock singer with honest lyrics and a raw sound, McClellan plays more than 10 instruments and has already released five independent albums since her appearance on the hit show.
The Aqua LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative funds crucial services for the homeless LGBTQ youth population in Miami-Dade County. As much as 40% of the homeless youth population in Miami-Dade is LGBTQ. This means that compared to the general population, the LGBTQ community is vastly over-represented among the homeless youth population.

Renowned contemporary dancer Cédric Andrieux trained in France then spent years with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company before returning to France to join the Lyon Opera Ballet. He will perform identical concerts on April 25 and 26 at the Colony Theatre. Cédric Andrieux is a solo set on Andrieux by leading French choreographer Jérôme Bel. This work, created in 2009 for the Paris Opera Ballet, has since been performed throughout the world. In this solo, danced and narrated by Andrieux, the French-born dancer traces the arc of his development in and out of the studio and on and off the stage. His story begins with his early training as a contemporary dancer, then moves on to his time at a prestigious conservatory in Paris and continues through his professional life as a performer with the company and Lyon Opera Ballet. His droll narrative is punctuated with danced illustrations that include excerpts from milestone dance works, by Cunningham and Trisha Brown, as well as a humorous look at Cunningham’s rigorous daily class. Most street artists early in the graffiti movement wouldn’t show their faces,
and their visual aesthetics was mainly a font-Ââ€based style. Much has
changed since then, for example, Gregos, a street artist from Paris uses his own face on walls across the world. In general, street art has become a rising creative industry with international influences.
But far from the common objectification we find in some of today’s street
art, this particular group of artists who are mainly street artists, have a
strong connection to these FACES.
The artists in this exhibition cite from iconic historical images as 2alas, to
controversial socio-Ââ€political references used by Claudia Calle, James Brutus
and Evoca1; to the anthropomorphic imagery created by Julie Friel’s
imagination. Dan Walker uses found objects and re-Ââ€uses them as palette to
create portraits of random ‘found’ people. Stefan Von Fouts recycles not only objects but also ideas in order to seduce the viewer to examine commercial fads and appetites. “The gorilla in the room†by Ruben Ubiera is a metaphor for what’s happening with street art today: “post graffism…the art no one wanted to call art, but its now staring right at youâ€.
With the fast paced world we live in, we sense that life is like a rat-Ââ€race existence where everything is temporary and transient, example, street art on exterior walls. By bringing the message these artists render inside the
walls of an art space, we try to hold the missive a bit longer.

After 17 Years On Lincoln Road, Tiramesu Restaurant Moves Back To Its Origins
With Lincoln Road’s evolving landscape, the restaurant will soon re-open its doors South of Fifth
Miami, FL – April 22, 2014 – The ever-popular TiramesU, the landmark family-style restaurant on South Beach’s Lincoln Road, having just celebrated its 25th-year anniversary, will temporarily close its doors on Sunday, April 27th, 2014.
After 17 years on bustling Lincoln Road, co-owner Graziano Sbroggio decided to move the restaurant to its origins, where it all began 25 years ago.
TiramesU will reopen its doors at the new location at 101 Washington Avenue after the summer. “South of Fifth is a growing dining destination and I’m very excited to be in the same neighborhood of many successful and internationally renowned restaurants,†says Graziano Sbroggio.
The new restaurant will continue its tradition, combining simplicity, consistency of food, service and accessibility which has proved to be a winning formula with both locals and tourists over the past 25 years. “The new TiramesU will welcome its patrons with the same warm and friendly atmosphere, offering classic Italian cuisine with a modern twist,†adds Sbroggio.
27-year old Executive Chef Fabrizio Pintus is already working on a new menu, one that will not sacrifice the staples TiramesU is known and appreciated for, like the homemade pastas. Moving Lives of Kids (MLK Mural Project),and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami will lead a select group of Miami Northwestern’s AP art students to create a community mural on the bus stop located at NW 22nd Ave, at NW 56 Street in Liberty City. The painting will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9am-4pm. The students have been working in the Education Effect Mural program at Miami Northwestern. MLK Project hosted a art contest for the artwork that would be painted on the bus shelter. The students were to come up with a design that reflects the positive aspects of the Liberty City Community. Bernisha Fleurinor, senior student in the Medical Magnet won the contest. The mural is being funded by Commissioner Audrey M. Edmondson. Each student will receive community service learning hours, as well as an educational stipend for their contribution. MLK Mural is dedicated to the healing and inspiring power of creating public art in partnership with local youth and the support of communities. Video

Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural Project (MLK Mural) is charitable organization, which focuses on the arts, youth development, and education. The artist and muralist, Kyle Holbrook, originally from the Wilkinsburg area of Pittsburgh, founded MLK Mural in 2007. His vision was to use public art as a way to reach kids over the summer months to do positive community work when they were not in school. Today as many as 5,000 youth and hundreds of professional artists have shared that same vision with Mr. Holbrook. For the past 25 years, Communities In Schools of Miami (CIS of Miami) has been a driving force in collaborating with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to improve educational outcomes by providing free programs and tools to keep students in class and on track toward graduation.

The evening starts with a sunset cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. where guests can bid on luxury, silent auction items including all-inclusive vacation packages; bowling and lunch for 10 with Al Golden, University of Miami’s head football coach; jewelry; dinners; spa treatments and more. Guests will enjoy a three-course dinner followed by live music and entertainment by CIS of Miami “starsâ€.
Local CBS TV evening anchor and producer Cynthia Demos will preside as the master of ceremonies alongside a CIS of Miami junior MC. They will welcome CIS national founder, Bill Milliken, a recipient of the Visionary Ambassador’s Award from Usher’s “New Look Foundation†and the National Jefferson Award for Public Service, which is widely regarded as the Nobel Prize for outstanding community and public service.
Tickets for the annual philanthropic event are $200 each, and all proceeds directly benefit CIS of Miami. In 2013, CIS’ gala raised more than $100,000 to fund dropout prevention programs for local students including after school programs, tutoring, mentoring and other programs. The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and is the President and co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation dedicated to providing cultural outreach to the community through the arts and education. This is Wendy White’s third theatrical production with the children of the Shepherd’s Way Homeless Shelter. She recently produced her original one-woman show, The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2009, the New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art Ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery†project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas†emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

Ploppy Palace Productions and the Miccosukee Tribe will be hosting a concert to raise awareness and funds for Everglades protection and public education on Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. at 7th Circuit Productions (228 N.E. 59th Street Miami, FL 33137). As part of this three stage extravaganza, some of South Florida’s top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together to raise awareness for this vital natural resource. Community speakers include Florida State Senator Dwight Bullard, South Miami City Mayor Phil Stoddard, Houston Cypress from Love the Everglades Movement, Laura Reynolds – Executive Director for Tropical Audubon Society, Matt Schwartz, Executive Director for South Florida Wildlands Association and other concerned citizens.
In addition, the Environmental Art Exhibition highlights a selection of distinctive artists including the works of Mark Henson, Kiro Fox Ace, Eva Ruiz, Lloyd Goradesky, Brian F. The La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup X – a three-day men’s tournament celebrating its tenth year, starts on Friday, April 25th through Sunday, April 27th. Their automotive designs revolutionized the automobile and most importantly, art and design culture. Auto Art Miami will be one of the most significant art and design installations of its kind.

For her first live performance in the U.S., Trinidadian artist Akuzuru will debut an interdisciplinary work in two acts over two days, evoking themes of fertility and interconnectivity. The complex piece will include horses, as well as dancers who will carry out extended interventions around the exterior and interior of the Museum. Akuzuru describes in her personalized vocabulary, the latest opus in her series of fertility movements, “TRANCE –FORMATIONS: Doucement…… l’Eau por L’ORI†(Slowly……Water for the ORI) as having two “ak-ts†during two successive days.

Amy Gross uses everyday materials such as yarn, thread, beads and wire to create objects that mimic the natural world but remain wholly artificial. Her fiber and mixed media sculptures, nicknamed biotopes, reflect on the inevitability of change, attempting to counter inevitable vulnerability by stopping time. Her life forms are imitations of life. They, simply, do not die. Gross earned her BFA at The Cooper Union in New York City and worked as a surface designer, creating textiles, toys, and jewelry before before turning full time to fiber art. She lives and works in South Florida.

O’Hollaren served in the White House as Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, and was also Special Assistant to the President in the White House. He served briefly at the Department of Homeland Security and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary of Transportation, heading up the Office of Governmental Affairs. O’Hollaren held various roles at Union Pacific Corp., and served former U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield as a Legislative Assistant and as staff on the Appropriations Committee. He is a graduate of Willamette University and has completed the Certificate program in Business Management at Georgetown University.

Each panel will pair a scholar or curator with an artist. Each of the participants will present an individual paper or talk on the given topic and then have a moderated conversation with one another. The symposium will begin with a Thursday evening reception to celebrate the exhibition, “Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,†during which the public will see the first act of a two part performance by artist Akuzuru. The second act will take place during the symposium on Friday.

This month, Anthony Jordon, professional photographer and social media expert, taught us all about Instagram, one of the fastest growing social media platforms.
Anthony is a Miami-based photographer specializing in engagement, destination wedding, event/social, and portrait photography. In 2013, Anthony organized two major international photography events in Miami; The Scott Kelby Worldwide photowalk, the first of its in Downtown Miami, and Help Portrait Miami, partnering with the Miami Rescue Mission. Anthony has been an online moderator for Cloak Inc.’s One 12 Haiti Solidarity Virtual March, as well as a guest speaker for Photovoice. Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. Enrique Flores-Galbis shows his latest series titled “Dreaming Havana: The Collision of Memory and Fact†at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Saturday, April19th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until May 6th. KOBRAND Fine Wine and Spirits is sponsoring the event and will debut a specialty drink from its new Coco line of Alizee.
Enrique Flores-Galbis is a landscape and portrait painter. Born in Havana, Cuba, he left in 1961 with Operation Pedro Pan, arriving alone in South Florida at the age of 9. Also a novelist, his award-winning book 90 Miles to Havana was based on the events that led to his departure and the life he encountered in the U.S.
Flores-Galbis explains, “This ongoing series of paintings began before the first return to my birthplace, my magnetic center, the island of Cuba. The first images, painted from memories, were tinged by the longings and emotions that this landscape evokes in the heart of an exile. After that first visit I started painting urban themes where the collision of memory and fact is the most violent. The bare buildings of Havana, bitten by the salt and wind have the look of paper-thin, brittle honeycombs. The clanging approach of an old Ford retrofit with a sputtering Fiat engine is unsettling but another worthy subject to paint if you want to address the intersection of nostalgia, history and cold fact. These images did not come into the studio fully formed and asking to be painted. Rather, they bubbled up and then coalesced into a narrative when these messy notions and feelings were plugged into, and then shaped by the physical constraints and peculiarities of my chosen media. The alchemic process functioned as both antenna and lightning rod to focus and materialize electrical impulses– memory and fact. Although each painting presented as a surprise, they were carefully tuned to create viable narrative structures that directly communicate rather than vaguely resonate.â€
Flores-Galbis received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Parsons School of Design in 1992. He has served on the Faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts for over twenty years and Parsons School of Design for over sixteen years as well as the Morris and Montclair Museums in New Jersey.
Flores-Galbis’ work can be found in corporate, university, and private collections throughout the country.

“Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,†opening April 18, 2014 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), explores the diverse cultural history of the Caribbean and its diaspora, highlighting over two centuries of rarely seen works dating from after the Haitian Revolution to the present. The exhibition is the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and scholarship organized by El Museo del Barrio in conjunction with the Queens Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The Miami presentation, curated for PAMM by guest curator Elvis Fuentes, is a honed reiteration of this critically-acclaimed survey and offers a vital reflection of Miami’s Caribbean community. The exhibition is the centerpiece of a season at PAMM dedicated to Caribbean art, which includes related exhibitions, a two-day symposium, a Caribbean film and video series, major new performances and other related programs and events (pamm.org/calendar).

With a magnificent and colorful spectacle that combines classical and neoclassical ballet, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, conducted by Maestro Vladimir Issaev, closes its sixteenth season, next May 3rd and 4th at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Paying tribute to the roots, the company will present a classical Russian ballet: Paquita, with music by Minkus and choreography by Petipa. Although over the years, the original two-act play has been lost, Paquita’s wedding with her knight, has become an icon in classical ballet repertoire. Paquita allows the main couple, in this case played by dancers Jun Tanabe and Kaori Fukui, to show their virtuosity. It also has a number of variations and Pas de Trois played by soloists of the company. The costumes were made in the workshops of Mariinsky Theatre (formerly known as the Kirov) of St. Petersburg.
To complement this eclectic program, and as a tribute to Venezuela, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will present Fuga con Pajarillo, the orchestral version of Venezuelan composer, Aldemaro Romero’s fugue, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev. In this work the typical steps of Joropo (a folk dance) are recreated in pointe shoes, showing the technicality of the solo dancers. The costumes are a creation by designer Jorge Gallardo who, inspired in bougainvillea flower, dresses the ballerinas, while the soloist wears traditional Venezuelan Liqui-liqui.
The company will also present The Dance of the Hours from the opera La Gioconda, with music by Poncielli and choreographed by Issaev. This piece was recently premiered as part of The Opera Atelier’s Great Moments of Opera. Followed by The Encounter, also choreographed by maestro Issaev with the beautiful Albinoni’s adagio. This choreography danced by Takayuki Asai and Hill Lillian, earned him the award for best choreographer in the festival of Palm Springs, and continues to be a success every time they perform it.
Furthermore, Takayuki Asai and Lillian Hill will dance the classic Coppelia’s Pas de Deux by the composer Delibes and choreographed by Gorsky/Saint – Leon, while Jorge Barani and Meisy GarcÃa will perform Paris’ Flames, a Pas de Deux with music by Asafiev and choreography by Vainonen. This Pas de Deux is performed only by exceptional dancers in high quality and strict standars international competition. It allows them to show their best technical skills.

MTV has supported numerous AIDS Walks across the country, and has raised over $450K since 2005 for the Miami’s AIDS Walk.

On Good Friday, April 18, the Miami Rescue Mission | Broward Outreach Centers will hold their annual “Thanksgiving on Good Friday†Block Party for the homeless and hungry families of South Florida. The Theme is “HEALINGâ€. Along with a sit down Thanksgiving meal there is an emphasis on Foot Care. Volunteers with wash the feet of the homeless and needy and Barry Podiatry Students will give foot care.
Over 500 volunteers will provide over 2,500 Thanksgiving meals. Those in attendance will be treated to haircuts and showers along with the foot care. Also live entertainment including a Passion Play will be enacted by residents of the Mission. Mission Hope purple bags filled with hygiene products will be distributed to all guests. Over 500 Easter Baskets will be distributed between the 3 campuses to children at-risk in our centers and those in attendance. There is a special emphasis also just for children. Adults and children alike will feel important and feel the love of God.
Rev. Ronald Brummitt, President of the Miami Rescue Mission/ Broward Outreach Centers said of the upcoming outreach, “It is a privilege and a blessing during the Easter/Passover Season to be able to help provide meals and to help those in our community who need it the most. We want our homeless and needy families to know that they are not forgotten and that we love them, as well as,[we] thank all of our donors and volunteers who help us make this wonderful day an awesome celebration for those that otherwise would have nothing, or very little for the Easter/Passover Season.â€

It’s every animal lover’s fantasy come true! Going to an event and being surrounded by hundreds of animals of all breeds, sizes, colors and personalities, and all eager to find a forever home. On that night, without stopping, the Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami-Dade Animal Services, and Cat Network, together with rescue groups from all over South Florida will hold a Mega Event where hundreds of animals will be available for adoption. We would love to match you up with the perfect four-legged friend. Who will you take home?

The evening includes a silent auction full of travel getaways, artwork from alumni, cooking classes and more surprises. winningART is ArtCenter’s annual fundraiser featuring artworks generously donated by resident artists.
