Artist Kareem David Piper

Get to know Kareem David Piper: Student of universal truths, purveyor of cosmic beauty!

By Tatiana Enriquez

Nirvana is a state of enduring happiness that is free of conditions. Most, if not all of us, will probably never reach it.  Gaze upon one of Kareem David Piper’s pieces, and you will find yourself, at the very least, believing you are already there. Kareem’s artwork is radiant, compelling, and bursting with introspection and spirituality. It questions everything and holds nothing back. His images reflect his experiences, culture, and desire to explore universal truths. They take us on a journey to what was, what is, and what lies beyond our limited consciousness. Simply put,  his work speaks to the soul and enlightens our minds.

More About Kareem:

Kareem David Piper was born in Trinidad and migrated to Florida at the age of 7. He was quickly scouted and earned a full scholarship to New World School of the Arts. Coming from the rich and vibrant culture that is Trinidad culture,  he took to the arts from a very early age.  However, due to family issues, he returned to Trinidad and did not come back to Miami for another decade. Once back, he joined the Marine Corps and served for 10 years. Kareem’s mixed descent is reflected in his work which does not conform to any one specific genre or style. In his own words, “his work aspires to narrate his own journey of rediscovery of ancient truths and wisdom; especially the power of love.”

Kareem shows love for his community and gives back by participating in philanthropic efforts. He has donated his artwork and has participated in several fundraising/philanthropic events, including Covers for the Cold, a fundraiser held in December 2013 benefiting Camillus House, and 2 Girls for a Cause, a fundraiser benefiting the Diabetes Research Institute and Walk with Walgreens, held at the Hangar Gallery in Wynwood this past Friday, April 5th.

So, where does his inspiration come from? Kareem says “[it] comes from the universe and the collective consciousness that binds us all together.” He feels that the Miami Art Scene “…is very young and full of energy and opportunity. I believe that there is lots of love and it is a great launching pad for any emerging artist.” In order for our art community to grow, his view is that “as an artist, and art enthusiast, I think in order to help it grow we simply need to utilize any and all resources at hand to expose the amazing talent that exist in our city, which is already being done. Miami and Miami-based artists are doing amazing things within the art community here and abroad but there should be more outlets to let those things be known, perhaps even outside the confines of our city.” He offers this advice to new artists on the scene, “firstly, I would tell them to believe in themselves, visualize what direction they want to take their art, then act. Participate, get involved, meet people, remain humble and above all else just do your art, don’t forget what it means to you, then give it to the world so that they can have their way with it.”

What’s next for Kareem’s art? He says, “I am currently working on and planning a couple of shows within the Miami area and overseas, no dates yet. As far as what is next, just growth, art is living in me and it grows as I do.”

The Bass Museum of Art is proud to present the exhibition Eve Sussman | Rufus Corporation, a presentation of the video artist’s recent projects. This exhibition will present two major video installations, including an entirely new exploration of her noted film The Rape of the Sabine Women. A feature-length video-musical, The Rape of the Sabine Women is a contemporary reinterpretation of the eponymous Roman legend. Presented in a traditional five act operatic format set in the 1960s, each of the film’s acts takes place in different locations, including Berlin’s Pergamon Museum and Tempelhof Airport, Athens’ Agora meat market, a classic modern 60’s dream house overlooking the Aegean and Athens’ Herodion Theatre. For this exhibition, Sussman and her team have reedited the film, and she is presenting it in a five-part installation, where each act of the film runs simultaneously in separate spaces.

Also on view will be her 89 Seconds at Alcázar, a twelve-minute film based on the Diego Velazquez’s enigmatic Las Meninas, 1656.  In her work, Sussman uses film to elucidate the circumstances of the exact moment that the painting aims to portray. By using a 360º Steadicam, Sussman is able to probe the quotidian scene that has become immortalized in one of Western culture’s most-discussed paintings.  In addition to these video works, Sussman will present photographic stills from these films alongside historical portraits from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art.

Eve Sussman founded the Rufus Corporation in 2003. Along with Rape of the Sabine Women, 2004, and 89 Seconds at Alcázar, 2007, the company has collaborated on other projects including Yuri’s Office, 2009, and whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir, 2011. Rufus Corporation’s works have been exhibited and screened internationally and are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Margulies Collection, Miami; Fundación La Caixa, Barcelona; and Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Eve Sussman is a 2010 recipient of the Anonymous was a Woman Award.

UM Frost Opera Theater Premieres Entanglements at the Lowe Art Museum 4/18/13-4/21/13

UM Frost Opera Theater Premieres "Entanglements" at the Lowe Art Museum

General admission is $10. Admission is free for all UM students, faculty and staff, as well as for Lowe members.

The  University of Miami Frost School of Music announces a new opera by composer Charles Norman Mason, entitled Entanglements, that examines the types of personal, family, work and political relationships that can evolve and entwine over time. The opera will be staged in five different galleries throughout the Lowe Art Museum.

“Since scenes are occurring simultaneously, a one hour performance is actually four hours of music,” Mason explains. “If the scenes were presented sequentially, it would be a Wagnerian-length opera, but since five scenes occur simultaneously, it only lasts an hour or two, depending on how much the audience chooses to experience.”

Dr. Charles Norman Mason often composes works that have a parallel with architecture or a physical space, or that affect the flow of people through time and space. Mason has written a number of pieces contemplating what it means to take into consideration the architectural space within which the work will appear.

With a run time of approximately two hours, the audience may choose to experience the scenes in any order they wish (and for as long as they wish), much like the types of non-linear interactions that occur on social media sites. Surfing or skipping scenes is allowed — and even encouraged — providing each audience member with a unique narrative experience.

Frost School of Music students from the Department of Vocal Performance will perform all roles. All artists, schedules, times and locations are subject to change without notice. Refer to the Frost School of Music website or the  Lowe website for the most current event information.

Installation #66 will feature mixed media artist Cynthia Fleischmann, painter/photographer, and her exhibit “Silver.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST www.bodypaintography.com

Cynthia Fleischmann grew up in Küsnacht, Switzerland until she was 10, spending most of her time outdoors observing, playing sports, running around naked and drawing. Her appreciation for photography developed from her father’s love for pioneering photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Paul Strand that lined his gallery walls called Galerie Zur Stockeregg. Moving to Dover, Massachusetts with her mother and three older sisters imposed a new culture on her in which English became her prominent language and school activities and sports her focus and drive. She was intimately involved in creating stage sets for the school musicals and was nominated as most artistic in high school. Cynthia always had a passion for experimenting, and in 2009 she combined her painting and photography into one form she calls ‘bodypaintography.’ Although photography is her focus at the University of Miami, she does not feel limited by any form of expression and continues to experiment with painting, photography, lithography and drawing.

The objective of ‘for artists..BY ARTISTS’ (www.facebook.com/forartistBYARTISTS) is to create a social colony for artists from all disciplines of the arts. We present a unique opportunity for painters, photographers, designers, sculptors and videographers to exhibit their works in a Large Digital Format environment. Selected artists gain access to utilize the technology of Haven and present their art in a dynamic presentation.

Installation #67 will feature Dan Vidal (Photographer), Andrew C. Schrimmer (Illustrator/Painter), & Jennifer Art (Photographer).

DAN VIDAL www.dan-vidal.com

Since 1999, the bulk of my photographic work has focused on the dance music culture of the major cities of the United States, including the Miami metropolitan area, New York, and Las Vegas. In this decade of time, the “nightlife photographer” has risen from being a marginal player in the scene to an integral, almost ubiquitous documentarian.

With an eye towards getting away from that ubiquity, I utilize all the elements within the events and locations I’ve had the privilege of shooting at. Not content to use just a flash perched on top of my camera, I’ll utilize existing lights, reflections, fog, smoke, and look for the mysterious “right look” as it applies to what I do, in order to get the image.

JENNIFER ART www.jenniferartgallery.com

JenniferArt started as a creative idea which then grew into something that can be seen on many different platforms. It began with artist Jennifer Artidiello from Miami, FL with the gift of drawing by simply looking at an image and replicating it onto a larger scale in perfect detail and proportion at an early age. This was a hobby for years with no formal teaching. After high school, she attended the Art Institute of Los Angeles – CA and majored in Media Arts & Animation, then transferred to Miami International University of Art & Design. With the knowledge and projects she was heavily involved with she was able to combine all aspects of study and form her unique style.

JenniferArt’s purpose is to explore all boundaries that no one has ever breached in the art world before. To blend traditional art medium with new modern art mediums to create a one of a kind masterpiece that has no replica or equal. From Photography to painting, JenniferArt can cover each aspect of what makes Art. Through graphic design to visual painting, there is nothing that she won’t use to express the colorful images projecting in her mind. This has progressed into the Photography passion, where all those elements that have been taught on paper and digitally can come together on film.JenniferArt’s goal is to evoke awareness that women are powerful sensuous creatures that have the capacity create and destroy all that you love.

While in Los Angeles, she was part of Red Giant Productions that worked on various projects and studios such as Image comics, rhythm & Hues, and Sony to name a few. In recent years she has worked with several clients producing graphic design logo work, web site design, painting, and photography. Photography has really been the passion and drive that moves JenniferArt, with many projects that are still in the works it is her desire and goal to bring her view of what the embodiment of art is to light.
ADAM C. SCHRIMMER www.adamschrimmer.com

Adam C Schrimmer is a color blind artist, whose preferred medium is charcoal. He loves working with his hands and feeling every part of what he is creating. The simple versatility in the tool allows him to reach the degree of detail that he chooses. He enjoys the closeness that he feels with it; there is a natural bond that is unavoidable. It bears a nostalgic resemblance to finger painting as a child, there is a direct connection between his mind, body, and heart that is still exhilarating (even as an adult). He is recognized for his work in charcoal on large-scale mixed surfaces including wood panels and canvas.

During a solo exhibit where he worked ‘live,’ Adam’s work was classified as “Emotional Expressionism.” His drawings never take more than a day, they are started and finished in one sitting. No matter the size or subject matter. When he gets inspired to work it is like a surge of energy… a pulse of power; he becomes like an out of control freight train driven by the music in his ears and the blood pumping in his veins. Adam is a very passionate person and believes strongly that a feeling, emotion or state of mind cannot be duplicated. This moment, right now, as you read this short bio will be gone in a second and you will never get it back. His drawings are moments in time that he cannot create again, it would never be the same, because the emotional and physical state-of-being that urged him to make that specific piece of art at that specific time, on that specific day are now gone.

Tickets are only $ 25.00. And that’s a very small gift for a 15 year long relationship! (and did you know that May 12th is Mother’s Day?) For information call 305-948-4777 or visit www.artsballettheatre.org

How do you celebrate fifteen years being together? If you were a married couple, the traditional gift would be crystal. The modern gift would be watches to mark the passage of time. If you gave flowers, they would be the most classic and elegant roses. Of course, precious gems may also come into the equation – Rubies, Rhodolite garnet or Alexandrite. But what gift do you give an entire ballet company to celebrate their 15 years of successful wedded bliss? Absolutely nothing! They’re going to give it to you instead, in the form of a grand Spring Ballet Gala!

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, under the direction of Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev ends its 15th season with a collection of ballet gifts fitting for a 15th anniversary!.

The repertoire includes Flames of Paris (RUBY Red) a classical Pas de deux from the ballet of the same name, with music by Boris Asafyev, based on songs of the French Revolution, and originally choreographed by Vasily Vainonen,

Spring Waters (CRYSTAL clear), with choreography by Asaf Messerer and Music by Sergei Rachmaninoff (from his Song for Voice and Piano). A pas de deux that shows athleticism and bravura as it rushes across the stage with a joyful exuberance.

El Encuentro (The Encounter – a WATCH would make sure you showed up on time), by Vladimir Issaev, music by Albinoni (Adagio); this piece gave Issaev the award for Best Choreographer in the Choreographer Festival in California.

Suite of Waltzes (like a bouquet of ROSES), also by Vladimir Issaev, with music by Venezuelan pianist and composer Teresa Carreno. Six women on stage in a stylistic ballet representing the different characteristics of women: sweetness, passion, anger, love, loneliness, joy. This piece is presented with live accompaniment by pianist Aly Tejas on the stage.

Glinka Suite Fantastique, Music by Glinka, and Choreography by Issaev, a piece for three men and six girls, in a very neo–classical style that represents the definitive Issaev.

And what 15th Anniversary would be complete without a grand and glorious cake?

Divertissements of Le Corsaire!

With the exceptional dancers that Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida has in their stable at the time of the anniversary, they could not let pass the opportunity to offer another exceptional gift to their long loyal public: excerpts from Le Corsaire showcasing the beautiful Pas D’Esclave, Pas de Trois, Adagio of the Rose (and other variations), from this beautiful and classical ballet. With music by Riccardo Drigo and choreography by Agrippina Vaganova and Vakhtang Chabukiani, like a long-standing happy marriage, they preserve the splendor of the Russian classical ballets.

These pieces will be performed by the professional dancers of the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida company. Kaori Fukui, Jun Tanabe, Takayukia Asai, Breeana Flannery and Hector Montenegro will perform the main roles.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida receives funding from Miami Dade County Dept. of Cultural Affairs, Broward County Cultural Division, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Miami Salon Group, Funding Arts Broward, Citizens Interested in Arts, Target and Marlin Foundation, The Miami Childrens Trust to support a professional season of performances.

Two stunning works by this internationally renowned company from Montreal – Henri Michaux: Mouvements and Etude for Duets. Henri Michaux: Mouvements includes 64 stage-height pages of India-ink drawings by Belgian painter and poet Henri Michaux. Inspired by Michaux’s “feast of bursting lines, spots and kaleidoscopic arms,” Chouinard used them as a choreographic score reading them literally, from left to right and page to page. Works by Marie Chouinard portray dance as a sacred art with respect for the body as a vehicle for that art, a virtuoso approach to performance and the invention of a different universe for each new piece.

Renowned jazz pianist Bill Mays will perform for the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s 21st Anniversary Jazz Concert Series.  “Mays at the Movies” features the Bill Mays Trio performing jazz arrangements of popular movie soundtracks.

This concert is based on Mays’s recent CD, Mays at the Movies and includes musical selections from some of American’s most popular movies including The Shadow of Your Smile, The Summer Knows, Charade and others.  Drummer Marty Morell and bassist Richard Drexler will fill out the trio for this concert.

A jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Mays has played with the best of the jazz world including stints as accompanist for Sara Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman and Gerry Mulligan. His bio includes an extensive list of television and movie scores on which he has played or contributed music. He has worked with legendary film composers including Michel LeGrand, Johnny Mandel and Henry Mancini.  To read more about this accomplished jazz musician, go to his website at www.billmays.net.

"Gospel music was the first music I heard,” says Bill. “Dad played the trombone, guitar and harmonica (at the same time!), piano and organ, and I have vivid memories of him playing the accordion while my mom sang.   Earl “Fatha” Hines provided Bill’s first exposure to jazz when "a friend took me to a jazz brunch and Fatha was playing solo piano,” recalls Bill. “That was the beginning of a love affair with jazz that continues to this day.”

Mays’s jazz career began with the Bill Green Trio in San Diego.  He moved on to Los Angeles where he worked jazz gigs with LA’s best players.   Soon he became a fixture in the Hollywood recording studios as LA’s  first-call pianist for singers where he worked with stars including Dionne Warwick, Anita O’Day, Al Jarreau and Frank Sinatra.

Mays moved to New York and began a fruitful affiliation with Palmetto Records in 1999. "That was a major move for me artistically,” says Mays.  “I found a connection with my trio of drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Martin Wind that was truly special.”  Recordings under the Palmetto label include Summer Sketches and Going Home.   In 2009 he assumed the piano chair in the Phil Woods Quartet while continuing to tour with his own trio.  That year he also produced his CD Mays at the Movies with Peter Washington on bass and Billy Drummond on drums on the SteepleChase label.

Mays is well-known for his compositional and arranging talents. He has contributed music to the libraries of a wide array of artists including Aureole chamber ensemble, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Percy Faith Orchestra, Woody Herman Orchestra, Morgana King, Shelly Manne, Mark Murphy, Bud Shank, Marvin Stamm, Lew Tabackin, Turtle Creek Chorale and Phil Woods.

Currently, Mays tours and records in many varied configurations including a duo with trumpeter Marvin Stamm, the Inventions Trio, The Bill May Trio (featuring Matt Wilson & Martin Wind), duo with Bud Shank, a sextet and as a solo pianist.

David Shelley- Vocals, Guitar, Songwriter

David began his career as a Blues artist in 1990 after touring the world as a guitarist with show business icon, Cher. David has shared the stage with Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes’ band Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers alumnus Dan Toler, blues artists like Anson Funderburg, Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Tommy Castro, Larry McCray and many more.
Writing and creating his own brand of blues, David uses world rhythms, traditional blues instrumentation and soulful vocals as a vehicle for his songs. His songs call to mind the struggles and joys of real life.
Charles Gasper – Bass

Receiving an electric guitar on his 10th birthday allowed Charles to refine his “ear” and help his musical passion to blossom.

“If there was a song to learn, I learned it note for note, even if it took me all day”.

Albuquerque alternative rock quartet Alien Lovestock provided a platform for his definitive sound and style and allowed for even more exposure after the band relocated to San Francisco. There, Alien Lovestock collaborated and performed with George Clinton, Storm Large, and other luminaries on the band’s sophomore album “Planet of the Fish”. Charles also continued to work with Alien Lovestock alumni Eric McFadden (EMT, Stockholm Syndrome) and Paulo Baldi (Cake, Les Claypool) and later joined up with longtime Bay Area Latin rockers Orixa whose crossover sound of rock/reggae/funk/ska had helped to garner accolades and to establish the band as the premier rock en espanol group in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2010 Charles relocated to South Florida to join up with long time friend “David Shelley” and his Florida based band “Bluestone”.

Randy Ridenour – a/k/a RED- Drums
Florida born, Randy Ridenour’s style of drumming and personality shine with Bluestone. Randy started playing drums at the young age of 7, influenced by Don Brewer, Buddy Rich, Thomas Lang and Dave weckl to name a few.

This is a new (non-cheesy) dating workshop, dubbed The Love Club, taught by personal development writer Nikki Novo and held at The Standard Spa, Miami Beach on April 10.

Nikki has a crazy idea: that dating should be fun. So she created a two-hour class meant to answer burning questions like “Do I really have to wear a tight dress to score a dude in Miami?” and “Do I just have to leave this city all together to find love?”

Rather than offer one-size-fits-all advice (ahem, He’s Just Not that Into You), she encouragesher students to jump off the crazy, overanalyzing wheel and instead start gaining clarity on what they really want from a partner — and then she offers instructions on how to get them.

It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures; where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

‘Low’ Art? Well, Yes and No …
New Art Show Brings Fine Art to Young Children’s Eye Level

Miami, Fla.—“More than Meets the Eye,” opening Friday, April 19, 2013, from 7 to 10 p.m., at Prints Giclée Shop, 8747 SW 134th Street, presents a fun new twist on art shows—no piece of artwork will be hung or exhibited any higher than three feet off the ground, thus “lowering” the art to young children’s eye level.

“The artwork won’t be ‘childish’—it will be PG-13—but it will be displayed so children as young as 3 to 5 years old can easily see it,” said show creator, co-curator and Miami artist Christine Lyall. She added that children of all ages are welcome to attend and admission is free. Also curating are Miami artists Aida Tejada and Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo, who owns and operates Prints Giclée Shop.

Ms. Lyall said she thought of the show’s concept when she noticed a young boy at an art show straining to see a piece of her work hanging on a wall. The boy’s father could see the piece just fine. The boy could not.

“I thought, ‘What if an entire professional art show were designed specifically for children?’ It seems so simple, and yet, I’ve never seen it done before,” said Ms. Lyall. “Children have a natural appreciation for and curiosity about art, and they often see things in art that adults, who tend to be more critical, don’t see. And yet, most art shows automatically exclude children as viewers because everything, unless it’s big, is too high for them to see.”

With governments cutting back on arts funding and school districts slashing their arts education budgets, “it’s increasingly important to find other ways to cultivate children’s appreciation for art,” said Ms. Lyall. “We hope this art-show concept helps.”

More than a dozen South Florida artists representing a diversity of styles and media (so children can see the many ways in which art can be rendered) are participating in “More than Meets the Eye,” including:

Aduni Abu Bakar—Sumi Ink Painting Marilyn Lemay—Watercolor
Leonel D’cröix—Digital Painting Adriano Nicot—Painting
Jose Luis Dias Montero—Mixed Media Jee Yung Park—Mixed Media
Jaime Ferreyros—iPhonography Edilberto Pelegrino—Painting
Sandra Garcia-Pardo—Sculpture Daniel Portnoy—Photography
Raciel Gomez—Mixed Media Clara Varas—Mixed Media
Rigoberto Rosales Jalil—Colored Pencil Katarina Vicenova—Oil Painting

“Poetry for all” comes back to Miami in 2013
O, Miami Poetry Festival returns in 2013 to once again attempt to deliver a poem to all 2.6 million+ residents of Miami-Dade County during the month of April.

Created by University of Wynwood with founding sponsor the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, O, Miami is both a celebration of contemporary poetry and an experimental project to turn a metropolitan area into a canvas for the literary arts.

In 2011, we flew poems behind airplanes, dropped them out of helicopters, sewed them into clothing, and attached them to every single bus in Miami-Dade County. We produced events with actors (James Franco); choreographers (Jonah Bokaer, Rashaun Mitchell); artists (Anne Carson, Sam Winston); and, yes, poets (W.S. Merwin, Tracy K. Smith, Raúl Zurita). The festival was covered nationally and internationally by The New Yorker, NPR’s Morning Edition, Dwell magazine, Best American Poetry, and the Associated Press, and chronicled in a new Knight Foundation report. http://www.knightarts.org/omiami/index.html

“Poetry is a living, breathing force that can light up the city. O, Miami is its platform. The written word leaves the printed page for a parade on South Beach, morphs into interpretive dance in Hialeah, and along the way helps art become part of people’s everyday lives,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation. At the conclusion of the 2011 festival, The Miami Herald asked, “Will we ever see another month so full of poetry?”
The answer is, Yes.
Y tambien, Sí.
University of Wynwood

This April, we will present a brand-new series of projects, interventions, and events that will once again re-imagine what’s possible in the presentation of contemporary poetry, including:
-A special celebration with Thurston Moore, lead singer of Sonic Youth; Richard Blanco, the Miami-raised poet who read at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration; and Megan Amram, a poet, comedian, and writer for the NBC show Parks & Recreation
-A final weekend, hosted by The Betsy Hotel-South Beach, that will feature readings and performances from the most diverse group of poets we’ve ever assembled, including Kevin Young, Chase Twitchell, Jean Portante, Jose Angel Leyva, Eduardo C. Corral, and Frank Báez
-A book called “That’s So Miami!” published by you, the people of South Florida. Send us your poems that begin or end with the phrase #ThatsSoMiami and we’ll play them on WLRN 91.3 FM, post them online and select the best ones to go into the book.
-“Poetry is Dead”: the first-ever poetry parade on South Beach featuring performances by well known dead poets
-A special “local poem” displayed pasted on 100 lampposts banners throughout Miami-Dade County
-Poems written by South Floridians flown behind airplanes
-Brand-new “poetry films” commissioned from and created by the geniuses behind the Borscht Film Festival
-A Tatoo + Poetry Night featuring legendary tattoo artist Duke Snyder
-A new dance + poetry piece by Merce Cunningham alumni Rashuan Mitchell and Silas Reiner commissioned and created for O, Miami
-An opening ceremony with Miami legend Trick Daddy -The first-ever Miami Literary Trivia Night -An open mic reading series for locals -A “poetry soapbox”: everyday at 5 p.m., a poet will read on the front steps of The Betsy Hotel -A poetry-themed flash mob

Miami For a taste of what’s to come this April, check out the multimedia report on our inaugural festival, describing how O,MIami made poetry compelling in one of the country’s most diverse cities. The report, commissioned by Knight Foundation, is available at knightarts.org/ omiami.
O, Miami Poetry Festival was created in 2011 by the University of Wynwood and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The festival occurs every other year and has the mission of delivering a poem to every single person in Miami-Dade County in the span of one month. For more, visit omiami.org.

Knight Foundation supports transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts. O,Miami was inspired by Knight Foundation’s arts program, which aims to engage and enrich communities in part by bringing art to unexpected places. For more, visit knightarts.org/omiami.

The Miami Classical Guitar Society is very proud to present the final Concert of our 25th Anniversary Season, featuring one of the most renowned, iconic classical guitarists in the world, Scottish/Spanish guitarist David Russell!

David Russell certainly needs no introduction. The legendary, internationally acclaimed GRAMMY award-winning guitarist has had a phenomenal performing and recording career and is reaching for new heights with his recent Baroque album. No matter the genre, David’s interpretations serve as references for all who wish to be more complete guitarists, as he occupies a unique position of universal respect and admiration among amateurs and professionals alike. Concert-goers and musical critics alike are amazed by his musical genius and captivating stage presence. His seemingly effortless performances are highlighted by great attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing, suggesting an innate understanding of what each individual composer was working to achieve and bringing to each piece an unparalleled sense of adventure. A past winner of virtually every international guitar competition, Mr. Russell is an esteemed Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London and in 2003 was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics and named an “adopted son” of Es Migjorn, the town of his upbringing in Menorca, Spain.

“In the realm of classical guitar, there is a small handful of luminaries whose concerts and recordings have earned them international stature…Scottish-born guitarist David Russell is one of these rare performing artists who has garnered favor with audiences, guitar aficionados, music critics and concert presenters around the world.” -Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

This is the third time the MCGS brings Russell to perform in Miami, and we are honored that he will be here to celebrate this anniversary with us! Don’t miss this opportunity to see Maestro Russell in Concert!

Monday, 04/01/2013, 05:00 pm –

1440 Ocean Drive,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
Webpage Link

n honor of National Poetry Month (April 2013) and in partnership with O, Miami, the month long festival that celebrates poetry throughout Miami Dade County, The Betsy South Beach has a full slate of events, promotions and interactive activities on tap. Produced by the University of Wynwood with principal support provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, O, Miami creates a series of events and projects with the simple goal of every person in Miami-Dade County finding a poem during the month of April. As host hotel for O, Miami, The Betsy provides accommodation for out of town poets in its Writer’s Room and in hotel rooms; as well as presenting public readings, salons, parties and the annual Poetry Broadside Exhibition.

The Betsy Writer’s Room, created as part of the hotel’s commitment to cultivating arts and literature programs, funded in part by a Knight Arts Challenge Grant to create a special place on South Beach that inspires writers to do their best work, celebrates its first anniversary in April. Six poets will stay in the room during April 2013 as The Betsy works with O, Miami to champion the power of words including a residency by Inaugural poet Richard Blanco, who read his poem, “One Today” at President Obama’s Inauguration in January.

On Monday, April 1st, the literary month kicks off with a series of events, if not poetic in nature, than poetic in spirit, featuring ethics pioneer and author Dov Seidman, who will make special presentations off-property as part of Betsy’s robust community outreach efforts presented in collaboration with leadership from Florida International University and the Miami Dade Public Schools. Seidman is the author of HOW: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything; events at FIU are free and open to the public.

Also debuting on April 1, Lamppost Readings (a.k.a. the stoop poetry project). Curated by O, Miami founder, Scott Cunningham, the event will feature poets each evening at 5 PM on the Northeast Corner of the Betsy Terrace to read a poem of their own as well as one from a poet who has inspired their creative work. Readings will be photographed and recorded and will become part of a digital archive, accessible on line. To become a featured reader, contact info@omiami.org

On Thursday, April 4 and Sunday, April 14th at 7 PM in BBar, Betsy will host ‘Open Mic’ poetry, encouraging poets from all walks of life to read their work in the presence of peers and become ‘an official’ part of the vibrant regional writing community. O, Miami founder Scott Cunningham will host the April 4th event. To sign up as a reader, contact info@omiami.org, or just show up and sign up to read (first come first served).

On Tuesday, April 16 at 7 PM in Betsy’s event space, B Bar a collaborative reading and conversation: Sylvia Plath and Tradition: 50 Years and Counting will pair Miami’s resident poet Campbell McGrath with poet Catherine Bowman from Indiana University. Ms. Bowman will stay in the Writer’s Room from April 15 to 19. A ‘Betsy Salon’ on Monday, April 18th at 10 AM at BLT Steak with Ms. Bowman will be co-hosted by FIU’s Dr. James Sutton as part of an emerging partnership with the Department of English at FIU. Both events are free and open to the public; however salon seating is limited. RSVPs at artsandculture@thebetsyhotel.com for both events.

Also on Tuesday, April 16, Betsy’s annual Poetry Broadside Exhibition opens with a light box display titled Manuscripts: the illuminated broadsides exhibition. Fragments of poems from both contemporary poets who will be in residence at The Betsy during O, Miami and internationally renowned poets with a link to Florida, past and present, will be interpreted by graphic artists and projected on light boxes. Miami artist Andrew Reid is curator and principal designer for the project.

From Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, 27, the Betsy will be hosting a dozen poets in residence, in support of O, Miami’s efforts to create a three day intensive poetry festival on the beach.

In addition to Richard Blanco, other visiting poets include Chase Twitchell, Achy Obas, Stacey Waite, Jose Angel Leyva, Jean Portante, Delana Demeron, Eduardo Corral, Kevin Young, Victor Rodriguez Nunez, Frank Baez, and Megan Amram. Readings will be held in B Bar throughout the festival weekend. For more information see www.omiami.org.

What better way to celebrate allof this literary splendor than with a reading and a party? On Saturday, April 27, O, Miami will present a Global Reading on Roofdeck featuring international visiting poets. The Betsy will then sponsor its third annual Poetry Partay on Roofdeck following the reading, with food provided courtesy of culinary partner, BLT Steak at the Betsy. RSVP to attend this event to artsandculture@thebetsyhotel.com

Textile Artist Maximo Laura is one of South America’s most accomplished weavers. He is a fifth-generation master weaver who learned the traditional style of ancient weaving, known as Cumbimayocs, from his parents and grandparents – all master weavers from Ayacucho, Peru. While he is ultimately respectful of the iconography and colors of the ancient Huari culture (which predates the Inca culture), it is his juxtaposition of those traditions with his own design elements and narrative that have earned him many international awards, distinctions, and exhibits. Laura is a scholar of textile art and has traveled the world exploring and teaching in his field.

In the ancient world of the Andes, the Wari Empire is quite known to the general public, eclipsed by the Incas. However, the Wari reigned for 400 years as the largest dominant culture before the Inca took over their territory. Who were they and what happened to them? What can we learn from the artifacts that remain? This talk will introduce the Wari, the objects of their culture now described as art, and their relationship to the Inca Empire that followed almost 200 years later.

Iron Throne:
6.5% ABV blonde Ale, brewed with a robust amount of pils, honey malt, and aroma malts and red wheat. Gentle hoppin includes Styrian Golding and Hallertau Spalter Select, appropriately noble hops. Spiced with grains of paradise and lemon peel. The hue is a slightly-hazy golden amber. The head is full and fluffy. Finish is crisp, backed by a touch of spice and hops. Aroma is a bit grassy with a hint of lemon and fruitiness from the yeast. Taste is lightly malty rounded out by honey malt sweetness. In Iron Throne we’ve brewed a fine ale combining rich flavors and aromas- along with easy drinkability, bringing sheer drinking pleasure.

Robert Ferrara / Swine Southern Table & Bar

It seems 50 Eggs Restaurant Group can do no wrong. The gustatory geniuses behind South Beach successes Yardbird and Khong River House have taken their winning recipe to Coral Gables. Enter Swine Southern Table & Bar, your next downhome dining favorite.

Chat Chow TV talked bacon and bourbon with Swine bar manager, Robert Ferrera.

Swine’s cocktail program focuses heavily on its own on-site barrel-aged rums and ryes.

“We’re actually creating our own original cocktails here,” explains Ferrera. “We have a full-sized Buffalo Trace barrel and right now we’ve got Cabajisco, a nice, beautiful, white spirit; Dolin Blanc Vermouth, so as that changes, it’s going to fortify and change; and Mandarine Napoleon, an orange based cognac liqueur.”

Prefer your spirits a little lighter? Not to fret, there’s something for everyone on this drink menu. Expect local, just-ripe ingredients from Homestead and creative applications (a glass misted with Mezcal for a hint of smokiness, in-house Swine bitters). And of course it all complements the sink-your-teeth-into-it fare.

Although Swine shares some food inspiration from Yardbird (you’ll find the succulent Shrimp & Grits on both menus), Ferrera describes Swine as Yardbird’s tougher, younger brother. Chalk that up to Swine’s competition-winning rib rub, massive smoker in the kitchen, and wood-burning grill. Try the fall-off-the-bone Memphis Smoked Ribs, or gather a group and go to town on a whole hog, communal-table style.

Now, while your mouth waters, watch the video above to figure out why fat washing makes rye tipples tastier (it’s a good thing, we swear) and find a new reason to drink rum (as if you needed one).

NWM2013/SPRING BREAK presents Planetarium KRAUTROCK: a Multimedia Audio Visual Timeline. Artist Kevin Arrow and Musician Romulo Del Castillo present an audio and visual experience on Krautrock, an umbrella term for the rock and electronic experimental music that originated in Germany in the late 1960s. The term is a result of the English-speaking world’s reception of the music at the time and not a reference to any one particular scene, style, or movement, as many who came to be known as krautrock artists were not familiar with one another.

Largely divorced from the traditional blues and rock & roll influences of British and American rock music up to that time, the period contributed to the evolution of electronic dance and ambient music as well as the birth of post-punk, alternative rock and New Age music. Key artists associated with the tag include Can, Amon Düül II, Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, Popol Vuh, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Neu!, and Kraftwerk.

This presentation will be accompanied by the technical support of Mark Bennett, Robert Cruz, Dylan Römer and Barron Sherer.

Krautrock at the Planetarium is presented by Miami Art Museum and Miami Science Museum in collaboration with SPRING BREAK as part of MAM’s New Work Miami 2013 exhibition.

MDC Live Arts Celebrates the Rebirth of Jazz Tango with Pablo Aslan Quintet
When the great Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla died in 1992, there were few musicians keeping his music alive. But Argentine-born, Brooklyn-based bassist, bandleader, and producer Pablo Aslan has brought an extraordinary focus on tango’s relationship to jazz, and on Piazzolla’s ideas about jazz tango. Piazzolla in Brooklyn, the latest recording by Aslan, was inspired by Take Me Dancing, a 1959 jazz tango recording by Astor Piazzolla. Newly recorded in Buenos Aires with a group of musically bilingual Argentine players, Piazzolla in Brooklyn updates Takes Me Dancing into state-of-the-art jazz tango. Join us for a one-night performance of the rebirth of Jazz Tango.

Multiplicity is defined as the quality or state of being multiple or various. The artists in this exhibition do not work with the quantitative notion of the word but rather examine the multiple uses of materials and their transformative quality to take on a range of meanings and functions. Whether they are found objects, recycled trash or simple materials utilized in daily life, the artists challenge, re-use and re-invent them in the creation of sculptural pieces, paintings, installations and photographs that reveal their aesthetic qualities and reference the personal context in which they were made.

“Environmental Consciousness in Eco-Art”
In Conjunction with Earth Week

Mary Jo Aagerstoun is an “accidental environmentalist” whose expertise is in contemporary activist art and cultural production. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Maryland’s Art History and Archaeology Department and proceeded to found EcoArt South Florida, Inc. in 2007. Since then her work has facilitated large-scale, environmentally conscious architectural and sculptural installations around South Florida in order to make a difference within native ecology through art that also engages the community.

Aagerstoun will speak about the role that EcoArt can play in bringing attention to and fighting the causes of climate change as well as the need for artists to assist in presenting the world with warnings and solutions to major environmental issues. Her talk will also encompass the history of “Earth Art” and the connections between the 60’s based movement and EcoArt’s current and future projects.

Since EcoArt South Florida’s inception Aagerstoun has directed many collaborative endeavors. The organization’s work can be seen in Dreher Park, the LEED certified Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek and in Belle Glade and continues to expand as projects are currently in progress for each of South Florida’s 5 watersheds, each to be finished in 2015.

This event is free and open to the public.
Meet and greet with the artist will begin at 5:30pm with free refreshments.

The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85

Eat, play and be healthy at Heart of a Chef (HOAC), a special culinary experience benefiting Florida Heart Research Institute’s mission to stop heart disease through research, education and prevention. On Sunday, April 28, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., foodies and families alike are invited to attend this family-friendly food festival focused on the education and prevention of childhood obesity. At this fun, interactive event taking place at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, activities for all ages will include food and wine tastings and educational seminars, all designed to entertain, heighten awareness and give children and their parents the tools to adopt heart healthy lifestyles. Guests are also welcome to explore the new exotic Wings of the Tropic butterfly exhibit.

No doubt, the event’s highlight will be Heart of a Chef’s annual culinary battle. This year’s chef cook-off will feature two of South Florida’s most buzzed about chefs – Todd Erickson and Aaron Brooks. In addition to helming the kitchen of Haven South Beach, Chef Erickson was recently seen as a competitor on ABC’s hot new culinary show The Taste. Brooks serves as executive chef at Edge Steak & Bar at the Four Seasons Miami. A basket of mystery ingredients will be given to the chefs, challenging them to create a meal in only 30 minutes which is both delicious and heart healthy.

Another not-to-be-missed moment is the high school cook-off featuring star student chefs from John A. Ferguson Senior High School and returning championship school, Coral Gables Senior High School. In addition, crowds can gather to watch Ellen Kanner, vegan chef and award-winning author of Feeding the Hungry Ghost: Life, Faith and What to Eat for Dinner, who will be giving a special cooking presentation.

Tickets for HOAC are $30 per person in advance, $40 per person at the door; the purchase of one adult ticket includes admission for two children.

Alberto Vejarano, aka Chanoir, is a Colombian artist raised in France that became known for his graffiti and especially for the iconic cat that in the mid-nineties began to flood walls in different cities in Europe and Latin America. Chanoir studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Annette Messager, Christian Boltanski and Jean Michel Alberola and others. Among his most important exhibits is the one in the main hall of the Cartier Foundation in 2009.

“No hard feelings” questions the basis of unnecessary suffering and tyranny of power undisturbed. It is based on our experience as human beings, our fears, and emotions and how consciousness and society interferes and manipulates our reality. Beliefs are by definition alienating and to start to question is to start being not alienated, suffering is to accept that alienation.

In his works, the chains symbolize impotence and stuffed animals symbolize the carnal and mortal condition of man. The use of these popular characters allows the viewer to feel identified with the subject. By torturing these inanimate beings there comes an inquiry on human instinct and why they feel satisfaction when others are tortured, killed and humiliated. This desire to “revenge” is a recurring theme in humanity. Good and evil are relative but fundamental, as the symbol of yin and yang, which symbolizes the many dualities that make up our lives and govern the balance of life itself.

Who has the power, is the real question on torture. The opposition between victim and villain defines the notion of equality, an unusual equality, who has power and who has the truth? Both the victim and villain feed on each other’s energy without knowing if happiness is to be bound or loose. Fear is one of the most powerful forces in the world, we, as the knight of the Middle Ages, must separate ourselves from the fears that are not ours and if not, rejoice in our suffering, our compassion that defines us as human beings for anyone who has not suffered is not a man, not a human being. This is an invitation to fear only for our inevitable condition, for have wanted to be gods when we are nothing but animals.
