The Board of Directors of the Florida Museum for Women Artists Cordially invites you to attend the Membership Preview Opening of Witness to Creativity II

Watching art being made can be very inspiring. It allows the viewer to see the process in action instead of just the finished product. Such an opportunity begins on Friday, July 15th. Eleven art installations will be in-process through the weekend culminating in an exhibition that will remain in place until the first week of September. The public can engage the artists about their projects, work methods and messages. There will be an interesting mix between artists and visitors which is a great way to have art understood. Dialogue about a conceptual work while it is being made actually becomes part of the work. We will be documenting and posting on our website and Facebook daily progress.

Evolving Installations by:
• Jamie Bardsley of St. Petersburg, FL. • Melissa Bresnahan of Daytona Beach, FL. • Michelle Carollo of Farmingdale, NY • Nathalie Chikhi of Sanford, FL. • Stephanie Cunningham of Fort Lauderdale, FL. • Grace Leal of Cocoa, FL. • Terri Lindbloom of Tallahassee, FL. • Judy Rushin of Tallahassee, FL. • Ileana Tolibia of Miami Beach, FL. • Jan Tomlinson Master of St. Augustine, FL. • Alex Trimino of Miami, FL.

Patty Ascher CD Release Show 8/18/11

Thurs., Aug 18, 201
Deauville Lounge
6701 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL
www.deauvillelounge.com
www.pattyascher.com

Patty Ascher and Zoho Music are pleased to announce upcoming tour dates in support of her new ZOHO CD “Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba”

“Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba” (Zoho 201103) Street Date: April 12, 2011
Brazilian singer Patty Ascher holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature from the University of São Paulo (USP), but she has always had the music in her life. Her father Neno was part of a very successful Brazilian band from the 70s, Os Incríveis (The Incredibles), and she has an uncle who works with many Brazilian popular artists.

In 2007, Ascher released her debut album, Bacharach Bossa Club, produced by the great Roberto Menescal. The album featured Ascher’s versions of famous Burt Bacharach songs with bossa nova arrangements and was a best seller on Uol, the biggest internet portal in Brazil. The album was also released around the world.

Ascher’s new album, Deu Jazz no Samba (Jazz in Samba), is a collection of 11 exquisite songs, most of them written by the singer with co-writers Marco Ponte and Ronaldo Rayol. Many great Brazilian musicians participated in this album, and Ascher says the disc is, in a way, a tribute to them. “We have so many talented musicians in Brazil, so we thought about making Deu Jazz no Samba a tribute to them. For me, it’s an honor to be able to have so many incredible players on the same team.”

With the talent, personality, and elegance of Dori Caymmi, Amilson Godoy, Jota Morais, Eduardo Lages, Gilson Peranzetta, Aluisio Pontes, and Cristovão Bastos – some of the great names that participate in this work – and Ascher’s one-of-a-kind voice, the final result is an album filled with pop and jazz with a bit of bossa and some Latin ballads. Roberto Menescal – a famous Brazilian songwriter and Ascher’s mentor – was the Production Supervisor on the album, and he played his bossa-jazz-guitar on the track “Sunrise,” Ascher’s English version of the Brazilian song Amanhecendo, from writers Lula Freire and Menescal. “Summer Knows,” by Marilyn and Alan Bergman and Michel Legrand, has arrangements by Dori Caymmi and is a tribute to another important musician and inspiration in Ascher’s career – the French orchestra conductor, pianist, and composer Michel Legrand, who is a three-time Oscar winner, and with whom she toured around Brazil in 2008 and 2009.

Famed local jazz artists make noise for Friday night happy hour at the Bass

The Bass Museum of Art will resume its celebrated Hot Nights Cool Jazz concert series on Friday, July 15 through August 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The six-week summer series will run every other Friday evening and will feature some of the best contemporary Jazz artists in South Florida.

The ever-popular happy hour and jazz night kicks off with the Martin Bejerano Trio on July 15. Martin Bejerano, a Miami native, has been active as a professional musician since the age of 15. Employing a serious technical command of the piano and a commitment to lyricism and musicality, Bejerano has continually garnered critical praise across the world.

Bejerano has performed with Grammy award-winning artist Roy Haynes, Russell Malone, the Christian McBride Band, Kenny Garrett, Lonnie Plaxico, Jimmy Heath, Ignacio Berroa, Mingus Big Band, Ira Sullivan and Marcus Strickland. He has also toured with “Jazz Reach,” a non-profit organization that presents multimedia concerts for school children across the country, educating them on the history of jazz music as an American art form.

Martin Bejerano will perform with his trio consisting of Josh Allen on bass and Reinier Guerra on drums.

On July 29, the series continues with Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth World Ensemble. Voted “Best Jazz Musician in Miami” by the Miami New Times in 2009, pianist-composer Monasterios began his professional career at the age of 18. A true piano prodigy, Monasterios has become one of the most admired and requested piano jazz players in Miami.

Monasterios has performed with a number of acclaimed artists including Ira Sullivan, Terumasa Hino & the World Jazz All-Stars, Othello Molineaux, Dave Liebman, Melton Mustafa, Marc Johnson, Donald Byrd, Alan Harris, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Nathen Page, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Paul Wertico, Mark Egan, Shakira, David Lee Roth and Nestor Torres.

Monasterios will be joined by the Fourth World Ensemble, featuring Troy Roberts on saxophone, Gabriel Vivas on bass, Rodolfo Zuniga on drums and Jose Gregorio providing additional percussion. Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth World Ensemble is presented by KCC Productions.

On August 12, the Troy Roberts Quartet will bring its signature style to the museum. Hailing from Perth, West Australia, award-winning saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts is currently based in the U.S. and on adjunct faculty at the University of Miami. He recently received his first Grammy nomination for his performance on Sammy Figueroa’s latest record, “The Magician.”

Troy Roberts will be joined by Silvano Monasterios on piano, Erick England on bass and David Chiverton on drums.

The series will conclude on August 26 with a performance by the David Siegel Quintet. As an alumnus of both New World School of the Arts and University of Miami School of Music, pianist David Siegel has performed nationally with major jazz artists including Maynard Ferguson, Nestor Torres and Arturo Sandoval. As a commercial writer and producer, his name has appeared on over 40 million records sold worldwide.

David Siegel will be accompanied by Dave Fernandez on saxophone, Fernando Ulibarri on guitar, Josh Allen on bass and John Yarling on drums.

Hot Nights Cool Jazz is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. Jazz Happy Hour offers complimentary beverages courtesy of Rex-Goliath Wines. Seating is limited.

Legends Alumni Classic was created to allow former collegiate alumni athletes an opportunity to compete in friendly competition against their ultimate collegiate rival, this four-day long charity weekend celebrates a timeless battle which strives to raise money to support a deserving charity in the community. In its first year, the organization has chosen the Boys and Girls Club as the beneficiary of the charity weekend.

The two participating organizations of the charity weekend, Noles 4 Life and Canes 4 Life, include alumni players from The University of Miami and Florida State; whose main objective is to unite alumni football players of all eras in an effort to give back to the community which cheered for them passionately on the field every Saturday. “It’s a great way to see old friends, but more importantly an outlet to service our community,” says Ken Alexander, director of Noles 4 Life. In Sense Miami culminates their 2nd anniversary celebration with a whopper of a burger By Betty Alvarez

In Sense Miami Social Media Management celebrated their 2nd year anniversary and also their incorporation at 80z Burger Bar. Other than networking, guests had the opportunity to have a welcome drink with other drink and Happy hour menu specials.

However, the big thrill of the night was the gigantic burger that served as the “anniversary cake” Nobody ever seen such a huge burger and it was the talk of the event. 8oz burger bar introduced the burger challenge to guests and even passed out pamphlets indicating the rules of this challenge. This challenge should be on Man vs Food, it is the perfect item. The burgas was cut with a saw. That is how enormous it was.

All in all, guests enjoyed themselves with great networking and great burgers.

Joseph C. Grant Jr. presents his artwork with live jazz performance at Artway 66 by Betty Alvarez

On June 7, Joseph C. Grant Jr. presented a collection of his artwork at Artway 66 in Coconut Grove. Grant’s artwork embodies nostalgia with a figurative style of elongated human forms and vibrant colors. One of my favorite pieces was entitled Tango in Miami where the artwork showed that this city is one fun city to live in. His renderings depict life through the eyes of the black male in America by way of the Caribbean.

To accompany this spectacular artwork celebration, New York based Jazz quartet, Innovative Sounds, who played at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington DC provided the musical atmosphere for the evening.

The cocktail hour was sponsored in part by TOMA Vodka and featured Joseph’s signature drink: The “Chocolate Eyez Martini”

Artway 66 is located at 2911 Grand Avenue, Ste. 400D in Coconut Grove. Please visit www.artway66.com

Modern Masters at Barry Gross Gallery 10/8/11

Modern Masters
October 8, 2011, 7pm to 11pm
Barry Gross Gallery
3335 NE 32ND STREET
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL 33308
Facebook Evite.

MODERN MASTERS is an art exhibition showcasing the careers of three talented and accomplished artists: Painter Barry Gross, Painter/sculptor Salvatore Principe and Digital Media Pioneer Laurence Gartel. The opening reception will be Sat Oct. 8, 2011

MODERN MASTERS will be a showcase exhibition, comprising the works of three accomplished artists working in completely different mediums and styles. Painter Barry Gross, painter/sculptor Salvatore Principe and Digital Media Pioneer Laurence Gartel, whose work spans nearly 4 decades, all originally born and raised in New York and now living and working in South Florida.

Barry Gross earned his BFA at Pratt Institute and continued four years private study under David Byrd. He considers himself a self-taught artist, learning many techniques he uses today by trial and error and experimentation. He has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries including Brooklyn Museum – Brooklyn, New York; Galleria Renata – Chicago, Illinois; Fulton County Library – Atlanta, Georgia; State Capitol of Georgia – Atlanta, Georgia; The Atlanta History Center – Atlanta, Georgia; The Lowe Gallery – Atlanta, GA; Trinity Gallery – Atlanta, GA; Winter Gallery – Naples, FL; Madison Noble Gallery – Sarasota, Florida; and Caesarea Gallery, Boca Raton, FL.

Barry’s work is a powerful statement of man’s continual quest for spirituality and the beautiful expression of human physical beauty. Barry confronts the human condition on every level and this drives his passion to paint and create. The imagery and intimacy that Barry creates in his paintings emanates from dreams and visions, in which he expresses his awareness of a higher power that permeates our physical world and lights our way with its beauty.

Barry’s paintings and drawings are empowered with technique, the use of paint, the consistency of oils which seems to flow through the body to the brush, the powers of space, shape, form and color. The conclusion being in how the viewing public interacts with the work, imbued with all emotions – spiritual inspiration, humor, drama, anger or sensuality, becoming reflective and inheriting a deeper access to the canvas, becoming more involved with its theme.

Barry’s work hangs in the private collections of Richard T. Rice, Hard Rock Cafe Intl.; Steven R. Kanter, The Coca Cola Co.; Burt Reynolds; Malcolm Forbes; Sir Elton John; Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Singer, Singer Sewing Machine Co.; The Woodruff Family; Mr. & Mrs. A. D. Frazier, COO Atlanta Olympic Games, CEO Invesco, Inc.; Mr. & Mrs. Leo Mullin, CEO Delta Airlines; Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia and numerous commissioned pieces and individual collectors.

Barry has donated art to many charities including Breast Cancer, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Childhood Diabetes, Aids Atlanta, Center One, Mario Leumieux Foundation, Sickle Cell Anemia and local HIV organizations, including Miami Beach Community Health Center.

By contrast, the art career of SALVATORE PRINCIPE wasn’t born from formal training. It would take ten years and the death of his mother to find his soul’s desire, “to paint the world with love.” Born in New York City in 1959, Salvatore was raised in Manhattan. His parents thought he might be a pro soccer or tennis player.

But Salvatore left school early, trading school for a new playground in the streets of New York, landing a job at Studio 54 in its heyday, where he assisting the lighting technician, surrounded by Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Mick & Bianca Jagger, Calvin Klein, Halston, Valentino Garavani, Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor. Three years later, his lighting experience landed Principe a job at The Underground, the next “It” club of the early eighties. Salvatore longed for something more fulfilling and quit in pursuit of a deeper meaning to his existence. He had this overwhelming need to “create”.

With no training and no real tools, Salvatore Principe began creating sculpture art from objects mostly found in New York City trash heaps. His heroes became Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Bergdorf Goodman gave Principe an exhibit in its famous window displays and this led to exhibits in Tiffany’s, Saks and Casabella. Soon, SoHo galleries were inviting him to exhibit, when his mother got cancer and died three years later at the early age of 48. To heal, Sal headed to South Florida and has never looked back. But he never forgot his mom and her legacy of love. His method of paying homage to his mom was to paint hearts, filling the world with love. He made and sold thousands of them in so many beautiful variations over the years that he became known for them, opening a gallery in Delray, and recently launching his own line of fine wines, and designing a line of ties and clothing with his pop friendly, modern style.

Salvatore’s collectors include: Lisa de Kooning, Donald Trump, Adam Sandler, Patty Labelle, Pink, Carmen Diaz, Ralph Lauren, Jenny McCarthy, Andy Roddick, Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Jennifer Capriati, Channing Tadum, Jenna Dewan, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Michael Recanati and Randy Falco.

His ABSOLUT GARTEL commission for Absolut Vodka is perhaps his most well known artwork gracing the pages of magazines such as ART in AMERICA, Artforum, Sotheby’s, Art & Auction, Art & Antiques, ArtByte, Scientific American, Technology Review, WIRED and NY Magazine. It is known as the first Digital Photograph ever ever created for this famous advertising campaign and is included in “ABSOLUT BOOK” by Richard Lewis.

Gartel has numerous monograph books on his work including “Laurence Gartel: A Cybernetic Romance” published by Gibbs Smith, (c) 1989 Utah. Introduction to the book is written by video guru Nam June Paik; “GARTEL: Arte & Tecnologia” published by Edizioni Mazzotta, (c) Milan, Italy (1998); “La Storia Dell Arte” published by Editions Giunti (c) Florence, Italy (2001); “Creative Computer Graphics” Cambridge University Press, UK (1984); “Art Of the Digital Age” by Bruce Wands (2006); “Digital Art” published by Ullman, Germany (2009); “The Digital Print” published by The Getty Museum, Malibu, California (2009), “THE WORLD OF DIGITAL ART” published by HF Ullman, Germany, (2010)

Laurence has spent the last several years focusing on SUPER CARS and exhibited a Ferrari based exhibition at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Edison State College, Ft. Myers. He produced an oversized book by the same title, introduction written by Jason Castriota, designer of the Ferrari 599. During Art Basel Miami Beach he produced the Tesla Electric Art Roadster. The automobile caused so much attention that it went viral on the internet, now present on over 40,000 websites. Gartel created another first, wrapping a FERRARI Scuderia LIVE on the internet to over 242,000 viewers. His current project is GRAFFITI painting a classic Mercedes Benz 1971 300 SEL. Corrosion is aphotographic series by artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke, that was born in 2008 toreference the strength of contrast, the passion for the opposites and theimposition of an aesthetic over another one in order to create a canvas full ofalmost tactile textures, which allow to read between the lines an image that itwas, but that will never be again its original beauty. According to Vanmarcke, the art pieces reject any visual fidelity in theviewer to herald new shapes that go beyond traditional photography, andincorporate themselves into new mixed techniques of visual expression.

Vanmarcke’s series is the result of aparadoxical encounter between the human body (overall, the female bodyphotographed assymbol of glamour and eroticism), and textures that cohabit in our everydaylife, but that nevertheless go unnoticed.

Inhis images, a photograph of a body overcome by an act of sensuality manifeststhe thin line between pureness and impureness, between the natural and what canbecome pagan. At the same time, the sublimation of an idealized body is rescuedand humanized by means of the use of photographed textures that repeat themselveswithin the world of the things: a crack on the wall, a blotch of paint onconcrete, a rusty object, cigarette ashes or even an old and scratched fryingpan. For the artist, all of these symbolize the wear-out of life, theinevitable pass of human time, the filth of routine, and mortality.

As a result of this juxtaposition, Vanmarcke’s series initiates a battle betweenthe beautiful and the ugly, both in their own aesthetical sense, arousing anirresolute debate on the definition of a culprit: Who makes the other dirty? Moreover, who beautifies whom?

Thecombination and interplay of these constituents allow the artist to play withthe somber, the imprecise and the fleeting, where observing the art pieces doesnot only result in an aesthetical activity that pursues delight, but anactivity that is at the same time intellectual as well as sensitive. At theend, Corrosion examines how fears andillusions, delirium, utopias and fantasies become at some point ornamental, andat some other point a reflection of the unequivocal and cruel reality.

Photographer Marlene de Lazaro and video artist Marlene Lopez’s imagery are in the opposite end of the spectrum. De Lazaro’s photography’s serenety and quietness gives the viewer a deep sense of zen like feeling, where Lopez’s videos move at a very past face, contain high energy and are very experimental. It is the contrast of the two what decided adal delgado, chief curator at the 6th street container to have them together in the same space.
This is an exhibition you don’t want to miss!

Exhibition runs until August 15th. 6th Street Container is open from 10 am to 4 pm. Monday thru Friday.

Says a recent Jewish Nun theatre-goer “Seeing the Jewish Nun at New Light Theatre is the best $10 I ever spent!”

Introducing the revolutionary concept of LIVE performances in combination with the visual arts! A new concept introduced by Adam White, gallery owner and Wendy White, playwright and founder of the New Light Theatre. (no relation)

Adam White went to see one of Wendy’s plays recently in Miami at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101.

The Jewish Nun is a coming of age time capsule portraying the journey of my youth in a deliriously emancipating musical comedy thanks to the extraordinary talents of Casey Dressler who brings it all to life and then some!” states playwright, Wendy White; “it is truly an honor to showcase The Jewish Nun as the premier play at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101. Special thanks to Adam White, gallery owner and fine artist for opening his doors to us!”

The Jewish Nun by Wendy White, performed by Casey Dressler is a comedic portrayal of a Jewish-American woman as she strives to find herself during her 19th year by delving into the pulsing life of Manhattan, juxtaposing the racy lifestyle of NYC with a self-imposed celibacy during an era of free-love.

This coming of age drama is a hysterical journey of close encounters of every kind filled with reckless abandon, amorous explorations and a momentous struggle between religious purity and the temptations of love and sex.

Femme de la Fire at Sidebar 7/9/11

Sidebar
210 SW 2nd Street,
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301.

All guests who RSVP to Events@peworldwide.com in advance will enjoy a complimentary cocktail from 10pm-12am. The first show starts at midnight and throughout the night DJ Todd Stylez will be spinning the best in TOP 40 hits and house music. So come on in and make Sidebar your Saturday destination! No fire extinguisher necessary.

All patrons must be 21 years of age to enter.

Sidebar of Downtown Fort Lauderdale introduces “Femme de la FIRE,” a new, sizzling Saturday night from 10pm until 4am with an entertainment line-up that is sure to give you a fever. Fire blowing performances, professional burlesque dancers, and the best in music and drink specials will have you burning for more!

One place that is ‘upping the ante’ in entertainment selection than any other venue in Downtown Fort Lauderdale will have you thinking, “What an experience!” Sidebar is introducing a new night for those looking for excitement. And we aren’t just talking good music and mediocre dancers. Sidebar is now featuring fire blowers and burlesque entertainment every hour starting Saturday, June 25th and every week thereafter. Appropriately named “Femme de la Fire,” the night is full of women entertaining you with burlesque dancing and fire heavy performances. As you walk up to the door, you will be greeted by beautiful girls dressed in burlesque-style attire and as you make your way over to the bar, get ready for a mind-blowing dance performance by ZHANTRA Entertainment, as seen on E! Entertainments “Sexiest Jobs in Miami.” And if that’s not enough, just outside is a fire performer putting on the ultimate show as she twirls and dances with flames. I guess when mama said, “Don’t play with fire,” it may not have stuck. But don’t worry; they are professionals, although you shouldn’t stand too close.

Over the past year, downtown Ft. Lauderdale has changed immensely from the simplistic setting of restaurants and boutiques to now what many locals call an “overly-crowded and overly-priced area.” With new clubs and expensive restaurants on the rise, the landscape of Fort Lauderdale is ever changing. But if you ask a local “Where is the best place to go for inexpensive food and drinks surrounded by a great ambiance?” they will certainly tell you one place, Sidebar in downtown Himmarshee Village, just a few blocks away from the overly- crowded scene of East Las Olas.

When it comes to Fort Lauderdale restaurants, very few have stood the test of time. Adjacent to Sidebar, Himmarshee Bar & Grille is one place you can count on for authentic cuisine in a relaxed setting. The restaurant has earned its reputation, dish by dish, for exceptional dining in Fort Lauderdale. On any given weekday, hundreds of professionals dine at Himmarshee Bar & Grille and on the weekends, the place is packed with locals who opt for a different kind of atmosphere. One where they can sit indoor or outdoor in a hassle-free environment.

Kurt Schwitters’ profound impact on art history is rarely given just recognition. A pioneering artist in the spheres of collage, sculpture, architecture and installation, Schwitters was an innovator; he set the tone for the avant-garde. At a young age in war torn Germany, Schwitters stylistically evolved through genres such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, and European Avant-garde to ultimately generate his signature modus operandi, Merz. Designed as a distinctly Schwitters architectural assemblage, his transformative installation known as Merzbau is recognized today as one of the most riveting artworks of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the Merzbau was bombed and destroyed in 1943 during WWII. Kurt Schwitters’ vast artistic impact nevertheless continues to have an influence on artists and developing movements as his multifaceted legacy lives on.

Held over due to popular demand, Fredric Snitzer Gallery will modestly aim to pay homage to the late Kurt Schwitters in their summer group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition Fredric Snitzer Gallery will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Jessica Laino and Jose Bedia. Kurt Schwitters’ comprehensive influence on art history resonates with each of these artists uniquely. While each of the participating artists has a distinctive style of their own that has surely evolved since the early 20th century, cohesively their collages, sculptures, photographs, and installations are intertwined with the multidimensional artistic relationships that Kurt Schwitters himself explored.

Tropical Symphony Concert Celebrates Sister Cities Ft Lauderdale & Medellin, Colombia 7/16/11

July 16 Tropical Symphony Concert At Broward Center
For Performing Arts To Celebrate 50-Year Anniversary Of Sister Cities Fort Lauderdale & Medellin, Colombia
Energizing Concert Breaks Boundaries between Classical and Tropical Music;
Media Invited to Attend Pre-Concert Ceremony Reaffirming first Sister Cities Relationship

The Broward Center for Performing Arts, a cultural partner in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District, will be buzzing with activity on Saturday, July 16 when the 50-year Sister City relationship between Fort Lauderdale and Medellin, Colombia will be commemorated with the Tropical Symphony concert in the Au-Rene Theater. Featuring dancers from the prestigious National Ballet of Colombia, this special event brings together Claudia Diez and her orchestra, TONO 40, and the renowned Amadeus Youth Orchestra from Medellin for an evening not to be missed. The Tropical Symphony Concert breaks the boundaries of classical and popular music and gives new meaning to the concept of a tropical orchestra. With an exciting fusion of music and folkloric dance, this special event promotes the rich cultural identity of Colombia.

Celebrated as one of the world’s premier dance companies, Ballet de Colombia, established by Sonia Osorio, has delivered its love for its country’s culture throughout the world for 50 years. The first folkloric ballet established in Colombia, Ballet de Colombia is a celebration between dance and music, and marries the rituals of the country’s folkloric history with the athleticism and majesty of its dancers. These elements are combined with colorful costumes and vibrant music to create an electrifying performance.

Established in 1998 as a music school that reached out to children from the underprivileged neighborhoods of Medellin, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra’s talented ensemble has traveled throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Europe, performing before noted dignitaries including Pope John Paul II. The first youth symphonic orchestra in Colombia, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra encourages its performers, ages 10-17, to nurture a love and appreciation for music through learning and exploration. This will be their first appearance in South Florida.

Tickets for the Tropical Symphony concert range from $30-$100 and are available through the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Box Office or online at www.browardcenter.org. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and takes place in the Au-Rene Theater.

The concert is presented by Claudia Diez with support from Nova Southeastern University, Ana G. Mendez University, and Coordi Util along with many throughout the Colombian community.

“We are delighted that the Tropical Symphony concert will take place at the Broward Center for Performing Arts during the city of Fort Lauderdale’s Centennial year,” said Carmen Ackerman, project manager for Riverwalk A&E District. “The Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District supports and promotes the international cultural ties between Fort Lauderdale and cities around the globe, and we’re honored that the Broward Center was selected as the venue for this exciting event.”

Tickets: $10 at the door
All guests receive a complimentary copy of “Beach Season”

Subtropic pop sensation and South Florida New Times’ Best Male Rock Vocalist winner Mike Mineo is back with a new album after his successful three-month national tour in support of his freshman release “Eccentricity”. During this tour the combination of missing home and hearing complaints about the cold weather inspired the new album “Beach Season” which is coming out July 22nd at The Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery.

The 10-track album is conceptualized as a full day at the beach, starting with a sunrise and ending with a psychedelic night beach jam. “You can practically hear the waves and feel the sea breeze in all the songs,” Mike Mineo attests. With track listings such as “Subtropic Sunrise,” “Beach Guava,” and “Follow Your Heart,” it’s a true summertime soundtrack.

“Beach Season” was produced by Grammy-nominated recording engineer and producer Matt Wheeler (Stevie Wonder, Dr. Dre, Koko Taylor) along with long-time producer Teasley at South Florida’s Power Station Studios. Also along for the second ride on the new album and tour are existing members Bill Muter on Bass/Tuba, Darin Scott on drums and brother Johnny Mineo on Bass and Guitar.

Miguel Paredes Unveils Superhero During July Wynwood Art Walk 7/9/11

Saturday, July 9th from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Second Saturday Art Walk.
Miguel Paredes Fine Art Gallery
173 NW 23rd Street
Miami, FL 33127.
Those interested in attending should confirm their RSVP by emailing RSVP@miguelparedes.com.

Miami-based pop and multimedia artist, sculptor and urban realist Miguel Paredes will unveil his newest piece of artwork, Superhero, at his Wynwood gallery.

“I’ve been a comic book collector almost my entire life,” says Paredes. “As a child, I often fantasized about having special powers, and those memories were a source of inspiration when creating Superhero. True to the Los Niños collection, my children were also involved in the creative process, and this eventually led me to paint my own interpretation of a superhero.”

Superhero is a hand-painted oil on canvas piece measuring 48 inches by 60 inches. The foreground features a child who is elevating by using his superpowers and winged feet, while the background showcases the artist’s personal comic book collection organized on a wooden bookshelf. A silver clock located on the upper-right-hand side of the bookshelf reads “4:20” and is a reference to the artist’s successful printing company, PK Graphics, located at 420 Lincoln Road in South Beach. Paredes’ Birds, which are a recurring image in his works, are also featured and serve as the child’s loyal, brave guardians. Superhero will be the last addition to the artist’s well-known Los Niños collection.

At the premiere, guests will enjoy refreshing nitro ice cream treats (liquid nitrogen ice cream with premium fruity and nutty mix-ins), compliments of HaVen Gastro-Lounge. In addition, complimentary Zignum Mezcal signature cocktails will be available, along with beer from the Heineken Light art bar, a selection of Rex Goliath wines and sparkling water courtesy of Perrier. Local DJ Ari X will provide the tunes for the evening. PK Graphics is also a sponsor and supporter of the event.

Artist, Author and Filmmaker Invites You and a Guest to attend an Evening of Art and Entertainment For One Night Only

Joseph C. Grant, Jr. presents a collection of his Artwork on Canvas including never before seen images. with Live Jazz Performance by “Innovative Soundz”
As seen at the Presidential Inauguration In Washington DC, Louisiana Jazz Festival
Attire Grove Chic

“To witness Joseph’s works in person is to experience something truly unique. The energy of his paintings seem to radiate off the canvas, possessing a life of their own,” says Brooklyn Congressman Ed Towns.

Joseph C. Grant, Jr.’s artwork embodies nostalgia with a figurative style of elongated human forms and vibrant colors. His renderings depict life through the eyes of a black male in America by way of the Caribbean. Inspirational yet reflective, his paintings have been compared to those of the late Ernie Barnes with the nostalgic quality of Norman Rockwell.

New York-based Jazz quartet “Innovative Soundz” will provide the musical atmosphere for the evening.

The cocktail hour is sponsored in part by TOMA Vodka and features Joseph’s signature drink: The “Chocolate Eyez Martini.”

A native of the Island of Trinidad, Joseph C. Grant, Jr. Is a respected artist, an accomplished author and an independent filmmaker. Using his adventures as the youngest of 11 children, Joe often incorporates his childhood into his works. Collectors of Joseph’s works includes comedian Bill Cosby, Miami Dade District 1 school board leader Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway, iconic journalist Gill Nobel and wife of NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas, Lynn Thomas. When not creating, Joe mentors disadvantaged South Florida youth through his award-winning Arts To Literacy program. For more information on artwork visit: www.JosephCgrantjr.com.

This vibrant young jazz band has played at the Presidential Inauguration In Washington DC, the Louisiana Jazz Festival and opened for one of Jazz’s finest, Irvine Mayfield all before the age of 25. Each member of the band has been formally trained in jazz with a musical education from The Julliard School (MAP), New York City All Jazz High School, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Brooklyn Music & Arts Program. Sketchy Miami i at Lester’s on Thursday, June 30, 2011.  What a great idea!!!  Sketchy Miami was created by the people behind Beached Miami, a blog dedicated to documenting all of Miami’s many cultural offerings no matter how obscure

The goal of Sketchy Miami is simple and impossible: to create a portrait of every person in Miami. Here’s how it works: 1) Miami residents submit photographs of themselves. 2) Local artists — i.e., all locals who consider themselves artists — create portraits (aka “Sketchys”) based on the photographs and then submit them through sketchymiami.com.  3) The finished Sketchys appear on the homepage with a link to their photographs and to the artist’s personal page.

BLP Presents Greenhouse Lounge with Sir Charles at Tobacco Road 7/23/11

Jacksonville’s Greenhouse Lounge (GHL) is hitting Tampa (Crowbar) and South Florida (Tobacco Road & Pineapple Groove) for three dates, supporting the release of their new album, Right On Time. Merging dub basslines and pumping electronica beats with breakbeat dynamics and some subtle guitar axe-wizardry, GHL’s sound has been described as euphoric. Right On Time, exemplifies the different personas GHL has taken over the years while still focusing on their current style. Featuring a total of 7 songs including “Koto” and other GHL staples, the album release coincided perfectly with their impressive set at this year’s Purple Hatter’s Ball at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. While multiple genres are touched upon within the album, one theme is current throughout; high energy electronica. The album is available for free on their website and hard copies will be on sale at all of their live shows.

Greenhouse Lounge: Greenhouse Lounge (GHL) is adept at merging rumbling dub basslines with pumping electronica beats, breakbeat dynamics, bright emotional melodies met with smart and staggering sample manipulation, and some subtle guitar axe-wizardry. Their music can been described as euphoric; a hypnotic groove-based sound; tightly woven sonic soundscapes that are rich in melody and texture. Born of the new dawn of live electronica music that almost fuses jam, jazz, funk, breakbeats, as well as live dub step recently. www.GreenhouseLounge.com

Sir Charles: Formerly known as Monozygotik, Charles Weinert has hit milestones many producers only dream to achieve. At the young age of 20, his sound has evolved from a dubstep monster to a far more sophisticated, bass hungry sex beast that thrives on intelligent low end manipulation and melodic over-tones that when meshed with underground and mainstream hip-hop acapellas takes on a life of its own. Playing to sold-out crowds primarily in the southeast and beyond, 2011 is looking to be a huge one for the young prodigy. Charles has shared club gigs with many big players in the electronic game right now including Bassnectar, Big Gigantic, Bonobo, Conspirator, Paper Diamond, RJD2 and more. Recently signing with Eliot Lipp and Old Tacoma Records, Charles is finding himself mentoring under one of his greatest inspirations. Charles will release an EP this Summer, in advance of his dropping his new album this Fall. www.Soundcloud.com/ItsSirCharles

Aquaphonics: Aquaphonics is a uniquely funky electro-soul indie band from South Florida. Derived from friends and jam sessions, Aquaphonics has boasted several different members and worn different skins, yet to this day retains its original, liquid, “Aquaboogie Sound.” The band is comprised of founding members, Jessiah Weston (drums/vocals) and Alan Martinki (keys), who have been melding their music since 2000, along with dynamic guitarist/vocalist Steve Elmore. Their edgy grooves and inspired song writing as demonstrated in their hit cult classics ‘Waiting for It’ and ‘Spooky Beats,’continues evolving and has recently earned them spots supporting Perpetual Groove and The New Mastersounds and a set at Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival. www.aqupahonicsband.com

DJ Craig Heneveld: Sliding his way into the innovative electronic artists coming out of the South is producer and DJ, Craig Heneveld. Craig combines a diligent work ethic in the studio with a passion for igniting the dance floor. Highlights of his career include opening for acts such as Mark Farina, EOTO, Perpetual Groove, BoomBox, Pnuma Trio as well as performing at Underground Sound 5, Trinumeral 2010 and Aura 2010. He is a set break staple for the freshest up and coming acts in the “jam-tronica” scene such as The Malah, Ep3 and Papadosio. If there’s a national jam-tronica act coming through southern Florida, chances are Craig will also be on the bill. Craig’s digital releases can be found under New York Dance music label SYSTEM RECORDINGS which include: Then There Was Single, DEEP LIFT EP, and Dig This EP. Other remixes include: Excess (RPO on Pure Perception Records), a remix of the theme from The Taking of Pelham and a remix of Malah’s track “Yorokobu” (free download). www.DJCraigHeneveld.com

As a hallmark that makes Locust Projects stand out from other art venues, the organization embraces cutting-edge exhibitions and innovation in art. In furtherance of the not-for-profit’s thirteen-year commitment to providing an approachable arts venue for the South Florida community, for the second year, Locust Projects presents exciting new program in which a young generation of artists are given the opportunity to create a collaborative exhibition in a public venue.

The project will be developed and exhibited in Locust Projects’ 2,700 square foot space in Miami’s Design District and culminate in a publicized show, open to the public. Black Gold – Struggle for the Niger Delta Screening at the 15th Annual American Black Film Festival 7/7-8/11

Black Gold – Struggle for the Niger Delta to Compete in the Narratives Film Competition at the 15th Annual American Black Film Festival July 6-9, 2011 in Miami, FL
Thursday, July 7th at 3pm (with a talk-back) and Friday, July 8th at 10:30 am
Colony Theatre on Miami Beach
1040 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, Fl

Tickets can be purchased at the box office or by calling (305) 674-1040 starting July 6, 2011.

Struggle for the Niger Delta will compete for the Grand Jury Prize at the 15th Annual American Black Film Festival, July 6-9, 2011 in Miami, Florida. The movie is nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Screen Play in the Narratives Film Competition. Director, Jeta Amata brings to the screen, a powerful story of greed, murder and corruption in the volatile oil rich Niger Delta region.

The scope and significance of the story has attracted a noteworthy cast, including several from Hollywood: Billy Zane (Titanic), Mbong Amata (The Amazing Grace), Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill), Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Hotel Rwanda), Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), Eric Roberts (Dark Knight) and Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs). Based on true events, Black Gold is already following in the footsteps of Hotel Rwanda for its social and environmental statement on corruption and the violation of human rights in the Niger Delta, as current headlines on the international news carriers: CNN, BBC and Al Jezeera reveal.

“It is a region where good and evil have been blurred by shady government officials, greedy oil companies and violent rebels fighting over the control of the scarce oil resources that run the world. Now the people are seeking peaceful resolutions to their grievances”, states director Amata.

Black Gold is Jeta Amata’s long awaited follow up to his award winning feature, The Amazing Grace. Black Gold was shot in his native Nigeria and the US to tell the story of an unlikely hero, a Nigerian woman who courageously stands up to unite the warring factions and rallies the world to take notice, putting her life on the line.

Producers and production companies for the movie includes: Jeta Amata and Hosa Okumbo (Wells and Jeta Entertainment; The Amazing Grace), Wilson Ebiye (Rock City Entertainment; Barack Obama: The Power of Change), Dede Mabiaku and Ori Ayonmike (Starkid Inc.).

“We believe that Black Gold will shed light on the degradation of the environment caused by oil exploration in the Niger Delta and hope that the multi-national oil corporations and the government will clean up their act.”, states producer, Wilson Ebiye.

According to Hosa Okunbo, Executive producer, “Black Gold is a powerful and timely story which will compel the stakeholders to build infrastructures that will improve the living conditions of the indigenous people.”

The six-hour event is scheduled to take place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Teams consist of 5 members, four (4) races and one (1) rider, racing against the clock until the fastest beds in each division are determined. Divisions are Men’s, Women’s, Co-Ed and Corporate/Over 30. Those finalists go head-to-head in a race for the top position. More important than the speed trophies are the top prizes are awarded for theme, engineering, décor, best overall and crowd favorite through our TEXT your vote telecom sponsor.
Open to the public, the race is organized as a fun community event to improve awareness and economic impact to the Grove Village and raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

Race fee: $100 registration fee per team for virgins (1 bed, five participants) ($50 for returning veteran teams) from June 1, 2011 to July 15, 2011 — $125.00 late registration (including late veteran teams) fee up to the Final entry deadline of 5 pm, Aug. 26, 2011. 100% of the registration fee goes to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

Prizes: Prizes will be announced at Bed Race for the various categories (Top Online Fundraiser – Best Engineered Bed – Crowd Favorite (by text votes) – Most Creative Bed – Best Theme – Best Pit Performance – Top Virgin Entry) Cash and gift certificates go to these categories only. Argentinean-born Guti embarks on an exciting tour featuring his acclaimed live performance, following the release of his inaugural album teeming with echoingly hypnotic jazz-infused house music. This unique live performer effortlessly presents a collection of beautifully constructed productions that demonstrate the convergence and symbiotic nature of his vast musical past, and present.

Classically-trained jazz virtuoso and national rock ‘n’ roll hero in his native Argentina, Guti is no stranger to music. A musical education that takes in Argentinean folk, blues, rock and jazz, Guti is currently enjoying a new chapter in his musical adventure within electronica. From the moment his track “Salsón” with Damian Schwarz on Frankfurt label Raum…Musik was licensed by Loco Dice for his compilation ‘The Lab’, it was obvious Guti’s decision to explore house music was a positive step.

With his productions now being a regular feature in the record bags of DJs as diverse as Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Marco Carola, and Carl Cox, it is apparent Guti is enjoying a watershed moment in his long adventure.

‘Patio de Juegos’, which translates as ‘playground,’ is a wonderful multi-genre journey through the mind of an artist who is both on top of his game, and on the rise towards the stars. Lashings of his ever-present South American heritage infuse with incredibly intricate and perfectly simple house structures that give the whole album it’s almost ‘child at play’ ethos that is rarely found in electronic music.

Current club hits such as “Wanna Be”, with its nod to the historical upbeat lineage of house music, and “All the Girls”, with its chugging rhythm, trickling piano loops and erotic vocals sit effortlessly alongside more experimental and jazz inspired tracks such as the explorative “Still Here”. Another fine example is “Sun”, with its deep bass line punctuated with the sun-soaked synths and summer high-hats that export listeners away to a warm utopia.

Guti produces a number of tracks with high profile artists from both within and outside the DJ fraternity – a sign of his increasing popularity within electronica, and also his innate ability to collaborate with more mainstream artists. This has resulted in Guti pushing his productions in new and exciting directions.

Israeli techno producer Guy Gerber features on “We Shall Overcome”, with it’s rising synths complemented by a chunky beat that will ensure it features in many sets over the coming months. Visionquest’s Ryan Crosson lends a hand on “No Promises” which has resulted in a truly driving dancefloor groove. And “My Whole Thing” features Anthea Marie Nzekwu whose uplifting vocals accompany a dreamy chilled out beat. Berklee College of Music graduate, and Guti’s long-time friend, Grünbox features on “Miraloo” – an example of Guti’s ability to collaborate with the worlds musical elite.

Notably, and perhaps the biggest coup, is that of Daniel Melingo who features on “Lucio El Anarquista”. The Grammy nominated tango singer and world–renowned musician is well known for his composition work on Pedro Almodóvar’s films, and he brings a rich musical education to a truly sublime track.

Overall Guti gives up a beautiful mixture of tracks that bridge the space between the club and the living room with consummate ease. A breathtaking first album which clearly demarcates the live performer’s ability and ambition for the coming years.

Registration: On-site the day of the event at 10th and Ocean Drive (Lummus Park) Required

Local “Green” Organizations Join Commissioner Libbin in Post-Holiday Beach Clean-up and Rally Support for the Smoke-Free Beach Zones Petition

As the sun rises on South Beach the day after the 4th of July, history shows that the area will be particularly litter-laden with cigarette butts, plastic and glass bottles and other debris.

In an effort to educate, empower and inspire the community, while emphasizing his commitment to the Miami Beach environment, Commissioner Jerry Libbin is putting together a volunteer beach-clean-up and encourages Miami Beach residents to participate, and if so inclined, show their support for his Smoke-Free Beach concept by signing Libbin’s petition. The Smoke Free Beach Zones petition is aimed at restricting smoking to designated areas outfitted with ash cans for better clean up and decreased pollution.

The Commissioner’s office will provide garbage bags and other materials needed to collect litter, and volunteers will receive a complimentary continental breakfast and beverages. It is recommended that volunteers bring their own reusable bottles of water as well as sunscreen. Finally, all participants are eligible for the “Who Picks Up the Most Litter” contest, competing for gift certificates, including Jet Ski rentals provided by the Boucher Brothers.

Jerry Libbin has spearheaded several major environmental initiatives as a Miami Beach City Commissioner. The Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB) recently honored him with the prestigious Emerald City Award. In addition, he lead a crusade to keep beaches clean with the “NO LITTER, NO BUTTS” campaign and created the Adopt-a-Beach program with 17 adoptees to date.

On June 28, 2011, 42 years after the Stonewall riots, Pioneer Winter and Jared Sharon will present “42: A Stonewall Prospective,” a live multi-disciplinary dance performance that combines film and large-scale props to recall the events leading to the uprising and violent protests which ignited the modern-day gay civil rights movement. The intimate event will include three live dance sections that will range from dark to humorous, along with the premiere of an original film to further expand the performance.

As an artist growing up in a post-Stonewall society, Pioneer Winter says he owes his freedom to his cohorts — the social advocates that paved the way for greater acceptance for an important segment of the population. “It’s not always strife,” Winter says. “It is a passion to progress.” – Neil de la Flor, Knight Arts

Funding for this project was provided by a Miami Beach Arts Gala Grant through the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council, Cultural Affairs Program.
