Coconut Grove Gallery Walk 7/2/11

Coconut Grove Adds Color to a Traditionally Red, White and Blue Weekend
Grove Gallery Walk Continues Saturday, July 2

Fourth of July is a holiday synonymous with flags, fireworks and franks on the grill – and now high-end art. Offering a colorfully creative supplement to the traditional red, white and blue weekend is this month’s Grove Gallery Walk. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, ten galleries will host a night of art, wine and fun while celebrating the ability to take artistic “liberties.”

Kicking off the popular patriotic weekend is “AMERICAN ICONS,” a solo exhibition by Hernando Alzate at Cristina Chacon Gallery. Showcasing how art can magically revive the emotional experiences connected to legendary figures of our recent history, “AMERICAN ICONS” uses Neo Pop elements to heighten the color, textures and the superimposition of impossible planes, creating worthy scenes of the personages to whom tribute renders. This unique collection from the Colombian artist teaches us that nostalgia can have a side of happiness, filled with energy and vitality. The exhibition runs through August 20.

Special to this month’s Grove Gallery Walk are living, travelling sculptures. Making its way throughout the Grove will be a spontaneously moving six-person figure, created by modern dance elements and inspired by an accompanied musician and narrator. The performance art is directed by Out of Africa store owner Trina Collins and begins at 7 p.m. in the Mayfair Promenade.

Two Grove galleries will be celebrating the opening of their newest exhibitions. Honoring a distant national instituton, Rodez Art Gallery will present “Reial Cercle Artistic of Barcelona,” an exhibition of works by distiguished members, Joan Abello, Matt Lamb, Pepa Poch, and Josep Puigmarti, of the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona; while the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery I hosts “The Art of Gary Longordo,” a collection of mixed media scenic portratis and vibrant Rockers seriers by one of the naion’s top forensic artists.

Housing the largest collection of Peter Max originals, Max in the Grove will be hosting a silent auction for one of the masters’ original pieces in celebration of Independence Day. It will also be exhibiting works by Picasso, Ferjo and Tadeo during the event.

Additional featured exhibitions in this month’s walk include AC Fine Art’s rare, signed and original large-scale works by Robert Indiana, Tom Wesselmann, Donald Sultan, Roberto Matta and Damien Hirst and Russell Young and “ART-I-TECTURE” by Danish born designer and abreact painter Hans Petersen at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery II.

Local artist Amy Reshefsky will be featured at FrameWorks Studio gallery. GroveHouse Artists will also highlight local artists by featuring Karen Deilke, alongside entries by the group’s open call exhibit “Summer Heat.”

Other galleries featured in the Walk include ArtWay 66, Blue Moon Studio of Art, and Dharma Studio.

The Grove Gallery Walk begins at 7 p.m. and continues through 10 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be made available at participating galleries, while live music can be found at some locations.

Art inspired events such as these are provided by partnering galleries and the Coconut Grove BID. The Coconut Grove BID exists to improve the quality and financial success of the Grove’s commercial core. It enhances Grove parking, lighting, sanitation, marketing, and safety, as well as supporting special events.

Coconut Grove Fourth Of July Weekend 7/2-4/11

Coconut Grove comes alive this July 4th weekend with a host of events for the whole
family to enjoy including Miami’s largest busking event, music, food, a coconut scavenger hunt, a hot dog eating contest and, of course, a spectacular fireworks show.

The festivities begin on Saturday, July 2 as the popular two-day “Cirque du Grove: A Busker’s Carnival” returns to the streets of Coconut Grove. Over a dozen performers will present unique fire routines containing baton twirling and rope lassos during the Saturday evening show, and Sunday’s shows which begin at 1 p.m. will offer free performances by trapeze artists, wire walkers, jugglers, acrobats, clowns, mimes, and balloon artists.

Before and after the sizzling Saturday evening spectacle, the Grove Gallery Walk will celebrate taking artistic “liberties” during the popular patriotic weekend. Ten galleries will host a night of art, wine and fun including opening exhibitions such as “American Icons” at Cristina Chacon Gallery.

The festivities begin at 11 a.m. on Independence Day with an old-fashioned picnic at The Barnacle Historical Park. Activities will include lawn games, board games, kite making and crafts and live music from Joel Zoss. Bring a picnic or treat yourself to hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie dogs and burgers, popcorn, soft drinks and ice cream available for purchase. Admission to The Barnacle is $5 per person; $2 for children ages 6-12.

For those who can “mustard” the courage, a gourmet hot dog eating contest will begin at 3 p.m. at CocoWalk. The competitor who eats the most hot dogs in 10 minutes will capture the title of Hot Dog Champion and receive a prize package that includes gift certificates from various CocoWalk merchants. Last year’s winner, who consumed 11 hot dogs, is expected to defend his title.

A Coconut Scavenger Hunt begins immediately after the Hot Dog Competition with participants scouring the Grove in search of painted coconuts. It is sponsored by the Coconut Grove Merchants Association.

The festivities continue in Peacock Park at 5 p.m. with food and beverages, photos with a live Lady Liberty statuette and culminate with a stunning fireworks display over Biscayne Bay at sundown (9 p.m.) under the coordination of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce.
The Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID) exists to improve the quality and financial success of the Grove commercial core. The BID enhances Grove parking, lighting, sanitation, marketing, and safety, as well as supporting special events. For more information on the Coconut Grove BID, visit www.coconutgrove.com or call 305-461-5506.

The Nostalgia Becomes Now In Full Color
American Icons, beyond a surprising and novel pictorial proposal, is a sample of how art achieves, in a magical way, to revive and create new sensations around mythical figures of our recent history.

This new collection of the artist Hernando Alzate, contextualizes these legendary figures within actual and very contemporary scenes, making them emerge like giants within the great cities of today, like an allegorical vision that leaves us with the impression that none of them has departed forever, that in a way they remain in our collective memory, like mythological gods that never die.

American Icons, uses Neo Pop like the more appropriate vehicle of expression to heighten this proposal, by vigor that allows in the handling of color, textures and the superimposition of impossible planes, in order to create worthy scenes of the personages to whom tribute renders.

American Icons, it is a unique collection that teaches to us that nostalgia can have a side of happiness, filled with color, energy and vitality

Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce 5th Annual Independence Day Fireworks & Food Trucks Extravaganza 7/4/11

Part of Grove-wide All Day Celebration on July 4th

Any moment now, the flags will be unfurled and once again be lining the streets of downtown Coconut Grove, as the village readies for its favorite holiday celebration. As in previous years, the events start early and end late, beginning with the traditional picnic at The Barnacle, and culminating with a big bash and fireworks display at Peacock Park (2820 McFarlane Road Miami, FL 33133).

The Board of Directors of Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce is excited to be at the helm of the fireworks extravaganza at Peacock Park, and especially looking forward to teaming up with returning sponsor, the Boston Beer Company. Sam Adams is once again the official beer for July 4th at Peacock Park, and nothing goes better with beer than an assortment of some of the city’s top gourmet food trucks, including, as of this date, CheeseMe Mobile, Dim Ssam a gogo, Gastropod, Latin Burger and The Fish Box, plus Fireman Derek’s World-Famous Pies and a Snow Caps stand. Soft Drinks, Cocktails and Zico Coconut Water will round out the menu.

Free Entertainment includes performances by The Ramblers Band, Pit Bull of Blues and Joel Zoss. There will also be a Children’s Fun Zone.

Festivities in the Park get going around 5 pm, and are expected to last until 10 pm.

As per tradition, the Coconut Grove Independence Day celebrations begin at 11 am with an old-fashioned picnic at The Barnacle Historic State Park. Lawn games, board games, kite making, crafts, and a treasure hunt will keep the whole family entertained and in a sporting mood. Live music from Joel Zoss adds atmosphere to a Park already decked out in traditional Fourth of July bunting. Bring a picnic or treat yourself to hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie dogs and burgers, popcorn, soft drinks and ice cream available for purchase. The Barnacle Historic State Park is located at 3485 Main Highway in downtown Coconut Grove, across the street from the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Admission to the Park on the day of this event is $5; $3 for ages 6-12; children under 6 are free. The park opens at 9 am with activities from 11 am to 4 pm. Park closes at 5 pm. The Barnacle welcomes Blankets, lawn chairs and picnics, but alcohol and fireworks are not permitted. For additional information call 305-442-6866 or visit www.TheBarnacle.org.

The fun continues in downtown Grove, with the Merchants Group Scavenger Hunt which starts around 3 pm, followed by the Hotdog Eating Contest at CocoWalk.

Once the winner is announced, it is time to head to the park and stake out a spot to relax and sup al fresco on a variety of food with ice cold Sam Adams, and let the fireworks begin!

The entire weekend is filled with festivities. Many of the Grove hotels will be having weekend specials, and the Grove BID will once again feature all manner of street theater – from flame throwers, to tightrope dancers and acrobats, performing daring feats along Grand Avenue.

Call for Volunteers: The Chamber is in need of volunteers to help at the vending booths in the park. It is a lot of fun and a great way to make sure you have a spot to see the fireworks. For more information, please contact Lisa Shallenberger at lmshall@hotmail.com.

Thanks to our Sponsors: The Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce thanks the generous contributions that make this event possible: Coconut Grove BID, Office of D2 City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, The Boston Beer Company, Creative Tools, Inc. Communications, CocoWalk, Fast Signs Downtown, Coconut Grove Grapevine, Zico Coconut Water, Turning Point Digital, Regions Bank, Sonesta Hotel and Suites in Coconut Grove and Coconut Grove Gazette.

Their sound mixes Dancehall, Cumbia, Reggae, Tropical Bass and Hip Hop Latino.

Mr. Pauer is one of the hardest working DJ/Producer from Miami. His recent release “Soundtrack” has taken him to cities like Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Manizales, Caracas, Brooklyn, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Atlanta in less than 2 months. His song “Cumbión Del Sur” was selected as “Download of the Week” by iTunes USA & Mexico. He will be representing Miami at Central Park Summer Stage this year along with Novalima, Jarabe de Palo and Ely Guerra.

Afro Kumbe is the DJ project for Latin Grammy Nomenees’ Locos Por Juana. This mashup band is taking over the city mixing an array of Latin American rhythms with a more electronic groove.

Elastic Bond is Miami’s own Latin Lounge gem. Their style represents a sexy and seductive city where the rhythm of Bossa, Salsa, Electro, Trip Hop and House blends with Sofi’s silky voice creating a rich and danceable atmosphere. They will also be performing at this year’s LAMC in New York the week of July 6-9.

Minimal is synonimous of evolution. This band has known each other since high school and evolved from doing Latin Rock to understanding and adopting the new sounds of rock mixing electronic beats, computers, controllers and sequenced keys with live drums, guitars and bass improving their sound to the next level. They will be releasing “Antibalas Corazon” in the next months promising a groundbreaking point for this band that deserves international exposure.

Mayan Chocolate Mousse, Guava Tequila Coulis

An evening of spectacular Coastal Mexican cuisine as Chef Andres Parlange presents an authentic, three-course menu from his Chiapas homeland while South Florida’s only Tequilier (tequila specialist trained in Mexico’s Agave-growing regions) Heriberto Ovideo unveils the Double Barrel Reposado crafted for Cantina Beach and pairs carefully chosen tequilas with each course alongside Casa Herradura tequila experts. Ovideo remains the authoritative voice on more than 85 premium tequilas carried at Cantina Beach, the largest 100 percent Agave tequila collection in Miami. The evening’s guests will enjoy freshly made guacamole and taste the rare, specially crafted tequila that goes for $450 a bottle at an oceanfront reception preceding dinner. It’s a beautiful, one-of-a-kind date night that’s reasonably priced at just $75 per person.

The Story Behind The Special Ritz-Carlton Tequila:
Only 240 of these exquisite bottles are in existence and will be unveiled, offered as tastings and available by the bottle ($450) or 2-ounce glass ($32) the night of the dinner, July 21.
Tequilier Heriberto Ovideo traveled to Amatitán, Mexico, believed to be the birthplace of Tequila, to nurture and select specially crafted double-barrel reposado Tequila from the House of Herradura distillery that would be reserved for The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. The process began in 2010 with 100 percent blue Weber Agave tequila “resting” in toasted oak barrels for 11 months before maturing in a second hand-made barrel. Finally in April 2011, Ovideo journeyed to the distillery to taste and choose the best of three barrels awaiting his arrival. The preferred barrel captured smooth, light, earthy flavors and was hand-bottled at Casa Herradura.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of the RedBull Red Bulletin Magazine Launch on 6/22/11

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of RedBull Red Bulletin Magazine Launch at the New World Center Atrium on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.

Last night in Miami Beach at the stunning building design by Frank Gehry, The New World Center, 450 guests gathered to celebrate the launch of The Red Bulletin, a global magazine that brings to life the creative and adventurous world of Red Bull through spectacular photography and feature stories. Music, live art, iPad demos and dynamic life size magazine pages sparked conversation and entertained guests.  DJ Africa kicked off the event and later transitioned the music to DJ Irie, while throughout the night LEBO impressed guests with a live painting of a colorful canvas in his signature style inspired by pages of the magazine.

Several Red Bull athletes flocked to Miami to celebrate the launch of The Red Bulletin including Reggie Bush, Daniel Dhers (X Games BMX gold medalist), female world champion wakeboarder Dallas Friday and world record holder wakeboader JD Webb.  Also in attendance were pro football players Zack Crockett (Oakland Raiders) and Michael Greco (Green Bay Packers) who were able to kick back and enjoy the party in their home state while they wait out the NFL lockout.

“It’s great to be associated with a brand that has its finger on the pulse of so many things,” said Reggie Bush. “The Red Bulletin showcases everything from sports to nightlife.”

The Red Bulletin is available at 20,000 retail locations nationwide and is inserted the 3rd Sunday of every month into the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Miami Herald and New York Daily News.  Readers can also download the free iPad app in the iTunes Apples Store or via www.redbulletin.com

Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go Starts Its Summer Tour In Miami 6/28/11

Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go Starts Its Summer Tour In Miami
Tuesday, June 28, 5:30 – 10:00 p.m.
Biscayne Truck Triangle Roundup
127th Street and Biscayne Boulevard
Miami, FL 33181

“Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go,” a national food truck tour showcasing Macy’s Culinary Council (MCC), is rolling into Miami! Macy’s first-ever food truck tour will feature a MCC chef on board at the Miami stop, cooking their favorite summertime recipes and dishing them out free!

Kicking off in Miami on June 28 at the Biscayne Triangle Truck Round-Up, the Macy’s branded food truck will visit multiple cities during its nationwide tour. With a member of MCC at each stop, it will be hard to determine if the master chef or their signature dish will be the star of the tour.

If delicious free food and celebrity chefs weren’t enough to get you to “go-go” visit the food truck tour when it rolls into your town, fans that “like” Macy’s on Facebook (www.facebook/macys), or follow Macy’s on Twitter (@macyevents) and the Macy’s Culinary Council on twitter (@CulinaryCouncil) and tweet using the hashtag #macyschefs, will receive a special gift at each food truck stop, while supplies last.

While the chef’s dishes are free, guests can support a good cause by donating to Feeding America ®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization. For every $1 donated, Feeding America can help provide seven meals to those in need on behalf of local food banks.

Macy’s Culinary Council is a national culinary authority comprising some of the nation’s leading culinary masters, including Rick Bayless, Michelle Bernstein, Cat Cora, Tom Douglas, Todd English, Marc Forgione, Emeril Lagasse, Marcus Samuelsson, Tim Scott, Nancy Silverton, Ming Tsai, Wolfgang Puck and Takashi Yagihashi. Launched in 2003, MCC’s team of distinguished chefs serves to inspire the way Macy’s customers shop, cook and eat at home. The chefs are both ambassadors and instructors, providing expert culinary advice and leading cooking demonstrations at Macy’s stores, with the aim of teaching customers how to cook and shop like a master chef.

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Ashley Ford Metrouroboros Reception 7/9/11

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Ashley Ford: Metrouroboros
Opening Reception For The Artist
Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 6pm.
UM’s Wynwood Project Space
2200A NW 2nd Avenue

Metrouroboros by Ashley Ford will be on view from July 9 – 29, 2011
UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Ashley Ford on view beginning July 9, 2011. Metrouroboros is the examination of the contemporary non-place. The term, “non-place” as coined by French anthropologist Marc Augé, indicates a kind of place that has a sense of liminality. These are spaces that are common to our everyday lives, that we pass through with frequency yet don’t hold enough significance to be regarded as places – highways, public restrooms, airports. Metrouroboros examines the psychological and sociological impact of these places and the interactions we have within them.

Ashley Ford has been exhibiting work in print, photography, drawing and bookbinding since 2001. She received her B.F.A with Honors in Studio Art as well as a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Because of this combination of interests, her work often has heavy psychological and anthropological themes. She has proudly exhibited her prints and books across the country and has been collected by the Miami Dade Public Library System as well as The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, The University of Alabama Libraries.

A full schedule of exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm & blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop, Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs in earnest during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. On “Song For Her”, from her forthcoming album, Karina’s classically-trained voice unveils the nuances of her lyrics and adds layers of meaning and emotion that are more commonly found in operatic vocal performances.

With this record, Karina explains, I want to incorporate the sounds of the artists that have influenced me and, while paying tribute to them, carve out my own space and create an album with a neo-soul pulse that pushes the boundaries of the genre. You can clearly hear this approach within the framework of a song like “Gone”, where multi-layered vocal harmonies and candid lyrics soar above an old-school groove, engaging the listener from the moment Karina opens the first verse.

In 2009, Karina was chosen to be one out of an eight-person choir/ensemble hired by the Miami Dolphins (Dolphins Voices) through Emilio Estefan to sing the anthem at all home games.

With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

After more than 30-years of live performances, five releases, and being covered by artists in nearly every genre of music, Graham Wood Drout’s IKO-IKO continues to get more attention than nearly any artist not signed to a “major label” and they have the accolades to show for it. Drout’s songs are covered by a wide range of artists – including Albert Castiglia and Joey Gilmore. Gilmore’s version of “The Ghosts of Mississippi” won him the “Best Blues Artist” award from The International Blues Foundation’s IBC awards in 2006 and BluesRevue magazine named it “Blues Song of The Year” for 2006. The band, itself, is award-winning and has movie soundtracks to their credit. “Don’t Mess With The Voodoo” appeared, as did the band, in the Martin Scorsese film, Cape Fear starring Robert DeNiro and the band performed on the soundtrack for the film, Contact starring Jodie Foster.

Graham Wood Drout (Guitar, Lead Vocals) is the driving force, principal songwriter, and front man of the band. He was born in Newark, New Jersey where, at the age of five, he got a plastic Roy Roger’s guitar and a 33-1/3rd LP recording of Western Swing music. All his life he has been dodging abnormal phenomena: From surviving floods to fires to hurricanes to lightning strikes and all forms and shapes of experience that would have caused many to quit in frustration; however, Drout persevered and turned all of that into powerful lyrics and driving rhythms for his music. At the age of eight, Drout’s family relocated to Houston, Texas and, after six painfully hard years, he moved to Miami, Florida for the first time. Two years after that, his family’s cultural aftershocks took him to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil where Drout farmed his musical diversity even further and, ultimately, returned to South Florida where he received a BFA in Art from Florida International University. His collaborations continue as he works with veteran artists and discovers young talent that he helps to cultivate. His reputation for inspired performances is simply legendary.

Vocalist and violinist Nicole Yarling’s vast array of musical interests has resulted in an artist who defies categorization. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., the eclectic tastes of her father, a fine Jazz pianist and organist himself, included artists as diverse as Miles Davis, Etta James, J.J. Johnson, Stuff Smith, the Beatles and the Motown roster. Absorbing all of those great artists, and “jamming” on violin with her father from the age of nine, it was inevitable that she would embrace a career in music.

Aside from the familial influences, Nicole’s education is extensive, ranging from a BA in Music from Baruch College, to a Masters in Music Education at Columbia University, as well as private training in composition, arranging, voice and violin.

Moving to Florida in 1980, Ms. Yarling soon became an important contributor to South Florida’s musical world as a singer and violinist, working in Jazz, rock, r&b, experimental music, and a few other styles that defy description. Nicole’s musical excursions have brought about stints with Dizzy Gillespie and three years on tour as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffett (1991-94). She also participated on Buffett’s platinum-selling CD “Fruitcakes” (MCA), and then went on to do eight worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks.

DOG, A Shadow Puppet Play
By Pablo Cano and Jim Hammond
2:30-3:30 pm at Lowe Art Museum
Art activity

In celebration of the exhibition, Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales, the Lowe presents another form of storytelling: the art of shadow puppetry.

Pablo Cano and Jim Hammond present “DOG, A Shadow Puppet Play.” Cano has collaborated with master puppeteer Jim Hammond in its writing and production. It is a story about a dog that pursues a “red squeaky ball” through ten famous paintings and sculptures in art history. The ball is used as a metaphor for each of our simplest pursuits of happiness. Keeping true with his use of found materials for his artwork, Pablo created each shadow puppet from plastic Beware Of The Dog signs. “DOG” brings together art education, music, and entertainment to young and old alike.

The performance is recommended for ages 6 years and up and lasts approximately 40 minutes. The room will be very dark.

Admission is $10 for Lowe members; $15 for non-members.

Blank City Opening at Miami Beach Cinematheque 6/24/11

Friday, June 24th
Miami Beach Cinematheque
1130 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL
blankcityfilm.com

Blank City is a well researched and captivating portrait of New York’s underground DIY cinema movement from 1977–1987, and features interviews with lots of great people including Steve Buscemi, Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Amos Poe, Debbie Harry, Thurston Moore, Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch & many more.

We really want reach out locally to get the word out to the Soul of Miami arts & music community when the film screens in the area. I came across your blog online and I was hoping you might be interested in helping us get info out about the film.

Blank City
A film by Céline Danhier

Blank City tells the long-overdue tale of the motley crew of renegade filmmakers that emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous period of New York history that crossed over with the East Village Art Scene and thriving music scene. It’s a fascinating look at the way this misfit cinema used the deserted, bombed-out Lower East Side landscapes to craft daring works that would go on to profoundly influence Independent Film today. Unlike the much-celebrated punk music scene, this era’s thrilling and confrontational underground film movement has never before been chronicled.

Directed by French newcomer Celine Danhier, Blank City captures the idiosyncratic, explosive energy of the “No Wave Cinema” and “Cinema of Transgression” movements. Featured players include acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Hip Hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, artist James Nares, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

Chairman Joe A. The 7th Annual Health & Safety Expo is made possible through the sponsorships of Kendall Regional Medical Center, AvMed Health Plans, FPL, Clear Channel, the Florida Department of Health, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Baptist Health South Florida, Borinquen Health Care Clinic, Univision Radio, Community Health of South Florida and Miami-Dade County.

Found Objects, Found Identity: Made In Colombia Installation By
Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi For Colombian Independence Day
On view July 8, 2011 to August 8, 2011

In celebration of Colombian Independence Day, Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi unveils Made in Colombia, a thought-provoking installation that explores the immigrant experience of self-discovery through displacement. Giving new purpose to found objects, the mixed media artist has culled discarded dolls, shoes, clothing and other things that will be suspended in ArtCenter/South Florida’s 2nd Floor Vitrine Windows, creating a layered effect of floating, tactile memories.

“When I moved to the United States in my early adulthood, I felt rushed to assimilate and lose my accent,” said Moreno-Yaghoubi. When questioned about her nationality: “A lady asked me where I was from and when I said Colombia, her face turned sour, ‘you mean the cocaine country’?”

Finding her own voice beyond the melting pot that is the United States or the blanket labels attributed to Colombia, Cecilia began using found objects in her artwork as a visual metaphor, one that reclaims identity and restores integrity. In juxtaposing one vintage item with another, some of pieces have been touched-up and been made to look new again, further sharing possibilities of transformation.

Through a combination of influences, Cecilia Moreno Yaghoubi’s concepts have traveled from the lush and beautiful landscapes of her homeland to riskier, mixed media work. Cecilia premiered her painting at “Origenes Latinos/ Latin roots” gallery in Chelsea, NY in 2005 and has since exhibited throughout New York and Connecticut, including the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center, the National Academy of Art Museum and at the Colombian Consulate of New York. She has been featured at Opera Gallery, Miami, and opened a solo exhibit named “Girl from Cali” at the Colombian Consulate in Coral Gables. Cecilia was selected to participate in the Biennale in Florence, Italy; in ArtCenter/South Florida’s windows program and at the prestigious International Kids Fund’s annual Latin American Auction. Donation /Dedication of Steinway Concert Grand Piano for Sobe Arts Institute 6/28/11

Donation /Dedication of Steinway Concert Grand Piano – Short Concert – Reception
Tuesday June 28, 2011 / 6-7:30PM
SoBe Institute of the Arts
2100 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach
Press and Invited Guests
Please RSVP to Carson Kievman, Executive Artistic Director events@sobearts.org.

As its fifth season offering quality arts education and innovative performances drew to a close, SoBe Institute of the Arts (SoBe Arts) received amazing and wonderful news: the donation of $75,000 from the LeRoy Schecter Foundation, to purchase a Steinway concert grand piano in honor of Ms. Ottavia McLaughlin. “Thanks to this very generous gift, SoBe Arts will continue to provide exceptional professional piano concerts to the general public, as well as motivate talented young piano students,” states Dr. Carson Kievman, SoBe Arts Founder and Executive Artistic Director.

One of these young musicians is Angel Perez. A SoBe Arts scholarship student for only three years, who last October, at the age of twelve, opened the concert season for the Brampton (Canada) Symphony with a Mozart piano concerto. Two weeks ago, on the eve of his thirteenth birthday, Angel was able to perform his first solo recital on this magnificent instrument to an enthusiastic theater-full of parents, friends and community members.

In recognition of this donation, the SoBe Arts Board of Directors, professional teaching artists and students will be presenting a check from the LeRoy Schecter Foundation to representatives of Steinway & Sons and dedicating the piano to Ms. McLaughlin. The press and special guests are invited. The evening will also include a short concert by faculty pianists Robert Chumbley and Adam Chefitz, followed by a champagne reception.

For the exhibition, MOCA’s galleries will transform into spaces that are quasi-recognizable as particular public and private settings, anchored by key seating elements.

United Way Miami Wine and Food Festival launches Bacardi’s 60 Second Cocktails, a monthly series By Betty Alvarez

In April, the United Way Miami Wine & Food Festival experienced record-breaking ticket sales and sold out events. To meet popular demand, the festival launched a series of year-round wine and food events – all for a good cause. 60 Second Cocktails with Bacardi is the kick-off event marking the expansion, and all proceeds benefited United Way of Miami-Dade’s work in education, financial stability and health.

On June 16, guests brushed up on their bartending skills and learned how to make delicious cocktails, with help from Bacardi mixologist and Miami-native, Gabe Urrutia who is an expert in the cocktail trend of molecular mixology. He taught guests how to make a balanced cocktail from a blend of unique ingredients in just 60 seconds.

A Bacardi Bar cocktail reception followed where guests enjoyed cocktails, appetizers, music, a special gift and exclusive entry to the private Emilio Bacardi Company Museum, not open to the general public. The museum showcases historical photos and memorabilia dating back to the 1860s, a recount of the company’s evolution, how Bacardi adopted its world famous “Bat” trademark, and much more.

Hello ladies! Forget about the lunch break meeting where you have to force yourself to talk to women, opt for the ice tea instead of the wine and run back to work. We believe that making business connections doesn’t have to be boring. High Heels and Handshakes is a group designed to merge women’s networking and philanthropy together with a twist of fun. So now you can opt for the wine, or the hot pink martini and bring your girlfriends, put on those glittery stilletos and have a great time with other like-minded business women! Here is the kicker, not only are you making contacts and having fun, you are also changing a woman’s life. At each event we ask for a $9.00 donation or that you bring business clothes that you don’t wear anymore. All the money we raise from the event will go to Women for Women Internationl to support women in war-torn countries and help them start their own businesses. The clothes will go to Dress for Success right here in Miami, to support local women starting their own careers. We know all of you wonderful business women have worked hard to take advantage of life’s many opportunities to get where you are, now lets give other women the opportunity to turn their hard work into meaningful success. Together we can make a difference and change many women’s lives.

RA Sushi in South Miami Honors International Sushi Day with Complimentary Tootsy Maki 6/18/11

RA Sushi Honors International Sushi Day with Complimentary Tootsy Maki
Informal Holiday Now Listed in Reference Book, Chase’s Calendar of Events

On June 18, 2011, RA Sushi in South Miami is celebrating International Sushi Day, an informal holiday created to encourage sushi lovers around the world to eat more sushi. In honor of this special day, anyone who “likes” RA Sushi in South Miami on Facebook can print a special offer good for one complimentary Tootsy Maki.

To make this holiday even more official, RA Sushi has declared June 18 as International Sushi Day in the 2011 Chase’s Calendar of Events, the most comprehensive and authoritative reference book available on special events, worldwide holidays, civic observations, and more.

The complimentary Tootsy Maki certificate must be printed and redeemed between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, International Sushi Day. It is valid at RA Sushi in South Miami (5829 SW 73rd St., Miami, FL.; 305.341.0092).

Tootsy Maki is one of RA Sushi’s most popular rolls containing kani kama crab mix, shrimp and cucumber, rolled and topped with crunchy tempura bits and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce. The certificate can be printed on June 18 and is good for that day only, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visit RA Sushi in South Miami’s Facebook page on International Sushi Day at http://www.facebook.com/RAsushiSouthMiami.

Sushi’s presentation has evolved over the years, when it began as a means of preserving raw fish in Southeast Asia and eventually became a form of “fast food” sold from street vendors. Now a celebrated cuisine worldwide, sushi has become an art form, with each restaurant offering its own signature dishes of nigiri, sashimi, and maki. On International Sushi Day, sushi connoisseurs and sushi novices are encouraged to dine on their favorite RA Sushi dishes or explore the menu and try something new. All 25 RA Sushi Bar Restaurant locations nationwide will participate in International Sushi Day.

See the certificate for official rules and details. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.

Moonfaire South Florida’s Spiritual Comunity Cooperative Festival 12/10-11/11

Moonfaire South Florida’s Spiritual Comunity Cooperative Festival
December 10th -11th, Sat 2-10pm Sun Noon-6pm
The Coral Castle
28655 South Dixie Highway
Homestead,fl 33033
Website.

Hear ye! Hear ye, Moonfaire is coming! What is it you ask? Well it is a two day community event at The Coral Castle in Homestead, fl. hosted by The Witch’s Garden since December of 2006. Who is The Witch’s Garden, well they are a local mom and pop pagan business owned by Marizel & Armando Almirall that started off at the castle on May of 2004 and now own a brick and mortar shop in Hialeah. Now about Moonfaire, we started this because we realized throughout the years that local spiritual artists and mystical businesses didn’t really have an event spotlighting them and their talents so we created this as a place where you can setup an inexpensive booth and get your name out there while getting to know the community. We also realized that among the various spiritualities there has always been too much separation because of what you practice, how many years of experience you have, credentials, and group associations. It always seemed to us that the community needed a place where all can come as one and celebrate earth, life and spirituality.

In these events the community gets involved and workshops take place throughout the day on various metaphysical topics hosted by individuals and groups alike. We also create a beautiful village where you can find lightworkers, psychics, massage therapists and local artistry as well as vendors featuring occult supplies, Indian clothing, natural bath and body products, handcrafted jewelry and more. The Moonfaire is definitely something to experience and even though we don’t host a public ritual we are however having a main drumcircle at 9pm under the beautiful December full “Cold Moon” which is a very sacred way to connect to one another, the energies of the castle and the elements surrounding us. The vision of the event is for it to continue to flourish and the only way this will succeed is with you.

What can you contribute you ask, well get involved. We need volunteers to help throughout the event, groups and community leaders to host workshops, happy faces passing out flyers and most of all help in getting the word out. We can also always use sponsors, vendors and donations since this is what pays for the production itself. Honestly anything anyone can contribute even if it is giving a flyer to a friend makes a difference we just want as many people as possible involved so we can create a community that brings forth all races, religions, age groups, denominations and so forth to drum, dance tour the castle and enjoy a day of family, spirituality and being all as one.

Please join us for the triumphant return of The Jewish Nun!
Flying in from Off-Broadway and Scotland, The Jewish Nun triumphantly returns to her newest Off-Off-Broadway venue, the New Light Theatre at Gallery 101.

Friday Night- June 24, 2011 from 7-8 pm
Saturday night – June 25, 2011 from 7-8 pm

Introducing the revolutionary concept of LIVE performances in combination with the visual arts! A new concept introduced by Adam White, gallery owner and Wendy White, playwright and founder of the New Light Theatre. (no relation)

Adam White went to see one of Wendy’s plays recently in Miami at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101.

The Jewish Nun is a coming of age time capsule portraying the journey of my youth in a deliriously emancipating musical comedy thanks to the extraordinary talents of Casey Dressler who brings it all to life and then some!” states playwright, Wendy White; “it is truly an honor to showcase The Jewish Nun as the premier play at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101. Special thanks to Adam White, gallery owner and fine artist for opening his doors to us!”

The Jewish Nun written by playwright, Wendy White, performed by Casey Dressler is a comedic portrayal of a Jewish-American woman as she strives to find herself during her 19th year by delving into the pulsing life of Manhattan, juxtaposing the racy lifestyle of NYC with a self-imposed celibacy during an era of free-love.

This coming of age drama is a hysterical journey of close encounters of every kind filled with reckless abandon, amorous explorations and a momentous struggle between religious purity and the temptations of love and sex.

GREAT REVIEWS from the EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL, SCOTLAND:

“New Light Foundation’s The Jewish Nun, Wendy White’s laugh-a-minute one-hander about a woman, Julie, and her lifetime of sexual misadventure. From clumsy, early-teen hanky-panky after school band practice to threesomes at college, Julie, dubbed “the Jewish Nun” by her classmates, has done it all and then some. Casey Dressler is a veritable whirlwind of sexual and comedic energy as the heroine, and she manages to take her character way, way beyond stereotype. She also sings about Mallomars in maybe the best confectionary-inspired number of all time.”
http://www.edinburgh-festivals.com/viewreview.aspx?id=1487

“Casey Dressler’s animated performance of The Jewish Nun bring the production to a close with a tone of much greater levity, as she retraces for us her entire sexual history, right from the moment when Sam from band class greets her refusal to have a baby before his grandfather dies with “What’re you, a Jewish nun?” We then pass through her first time, her first heartbreak, her first lesbian threesome and beyond, all while conserving her unique identity as a decidedly Jewish, very open-minded nun.”
http://www.festmag.co.uk/reviews/188-two_islands_jewish_nun_the_island_blogosphere

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 120 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the base for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced The Jewish Nun to sold out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 2009, New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

The New Light Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation, has won numerous awards around the globe, has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. More information about the writer and director, Wendy White can be found on her website: www.newlightgallery.org. Please visit: http://www.newlightgallery.org/paintingswendy/theater-resume.html

We will join hands from 12 noon until 12:15 p.m.

On June 25th at 12 noon in many time zones worldwide, people will join hands on beaches and in cities for an annual “Hands Across The Sand” event. They will say NO to expanded offshore drilling and YES to clean energy solutions.

“Hands Across The Sand” began in 2009, to demonstrate the depth of public support for protecting coastal economies, oceans and marine life from the threats of offshore drilling. As Woody Allen said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

“Hands Across The Sand” participants will join hands to urge decision makers to end the United States’ dependence on fossil fuels and begin investing in cleaner energy choices now.

Residents of Miami will “draw a line in the sand,” by joining hands in symbolic demonstration against offshore drilling. Last year’s “Hands Across the Sand” Miami event attracted thousands of people, making it one of the largest anti-drilling and pro-clean energy demonstrations in the world.

June 25th, 9pm & 11pm
Ironside Campus
7610 NE 4th Ct.
Miami, FL

The film will be the first in an our Summer program.

In her brief career, cut tragically short at the age of thirty-nine, Larisa Shepitko established herself as a leading voice in sixties and seventies Soviet cinema. Her work is rich in both image and narrative with a particular skill in evoking her characters’ interior worlds. Wings / Krylya is the story of Nadezhda Petrovna, a once proud fighter pilot in the Soviet Union forced to retire to a life of routine as a provincial schoolmistress. Unable adjust to her new life, Nadezdha finds herself retreating to a life of memory and fantasy. Shot in 35mm in black and white with a running time of 86 minutes, Wings is a forgotten gem of Soviet cinema.

Nomad Film Club is dedicated to screening films in unique spaces through out South Florida and we are proud to have Ironside Campus as our first location. Nestled between the Upper Eastside and Buena Vista neighborhoods, the Ironside Campus site is a mixture of artistry and industry. Coverings, a whole sale marble showroom, will serve as the screening room.

Born in 1948 and now in his third decade as a professional performing artist, E continues to nurture his passion for the Blues. Growing up in New York, he discovered his purpose at the age of 13, when he was drawn to the sounds of Acoustic Blues, and got his first harmonica when he discovered Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, he developed his singer/songwriting talents, as well as an aptitude for playing other instruments beautifully… His specialty was the blues harp. He established himself as a ground-breaking harmonica player, and became a percussionist with Hodges, James and Smith (back in the early 70s) as well as a studio musician with Bolic Sound Studios, playing behind Ike and Tina Turner. He also played percussions on Sussex Records with Bobbi Hall behind Bill Withers in 1971 through 1974. In the 80s, he moved to Chicago where he played with the likes of John Prine, Jo Mapes, and Joseph Jarman.

While family and other commitments would interrupt his career, E always returned to his roots in blues, and 2000 saw the release of his second album, “The First Time Out”, an extraordinary recording that was an eclectic mix of ten original compositions comprising Blues, R&B, Jazz, Delta and Gospel. In 2002, E hit his stride, adding his exceptional harmonica skills and powerful vocals to the mix. He delivers charismatic, compelling, and passionate performances that are charged with emotion and filled with his authentic signature style. Always experimenting with new sounds, he sometimes makes bold, daring renditions of obscure tunes of legendary icons such as Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, adding his unique spin to them.

2006 was a creative year for E, what with three albums released and building his own record label, Black Owl Music. While his albums showcase the sensual range of his vocals and the use of his voice as an incredibly multi-faceted instrument, it is his haunting harp signature style that captivates and inspires his audience. “Mississippi Reminiscence” is the most personal of his work, and “Five Long Years: A Tribute To Carey Bell” has been hailed as sheer unadulterated blues.
