Photographs of Creative Connections 11 at Mano Fine Art Studio on 3/22/11

Life is Art Creative Connections 11 at MANO Fine Art in the Bird Road Art District on Tuesday, March 22, 2011.  We had a great crowd and everyone had a great time.

We had John Mahoney do a presentation on The Social Media Starter. John Mahoney was a currencry trader. He started using social media and found that it enhanced his own business. He taught himself all about Facebook and Twitter and Meetup, as well as the other social media sites. He then converted that use to support his love of the arts. As a self-taught social media expert, he knows exactly what other beginners are going through.

Find John Mahoney on his website at www.socialmedia305.com .

MIAMI BEACH – Symbio, a new gym featuring an innovative science-fitness program, wants to meet its neighbors.

So, on Saturday, March 26, Symbio is opening its doors at 1815 Purdy Ave., so locals can put its trainers, instructors and all-new Cybex equipment through iron pumping, heart pounding paces.

Everyone who works out qualifies to win a free three-month membership.

So what is Symbio (http://www.symbiofit.com)? The gym takes working out and gyms to a level not yet seen in the industry. The founders, two champions of South Florida fitness, have developed the BioFit Metablic Test, which gauges an individual’s unique needs based on their metabolism, heart rate and stage of life.

The BioFit test establishes a person’s biological age (i.e. you can be 50 but workout like a 30-year-old, or you can be 30 and workout like a 60-year-old) and ideal fat-burning zone. Based on the results, Symbio’s staff can develop an individualized workout and nutrition plan.

The testing is so innovative that doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital use the BioFit Metabolic Test to help patients with a variety of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and hormone imbalances improve their health.

Athletes use the test to ensure that they can improve their performance in competition.

Giacomo Gates approaches jazz singing with a showman’s poise and an aficionado’s zeal. Holding court on Wednesday night in the mezzanine lounge of the Kitano New York Hotel, he was solicitous but cool. He wanted to let his listeners in on a secret, bring them into his confidence. With his deep, cognac baritone and his vintage-hipster lexicon, he seemed an appreciative throwback, eager to share credit with his precursors while mindful of keeping a little for himself.

Opening with “Melodious Funk,” a medium-bright swinger from his most recent album, “Luminosity” (G88), Mr. Gates laid out his core principles from the start: sporty syncopations, nimble turns of phrase, sure-footed scat choruses. His stage manner conveyed a muted but stout physicality, perhaps as a byproduct of his experience. (Before turning full time to jazz in 1990, he spent more than a dozen years in heavy construction, working on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, among other things.) In his phrasing and his bearing, he upheld a distinctly masculine ideal of deceptive nonchalance.

Mr. Gates has made a specialty out of vocalese, the jazz practice of setting original lyrics to a musician’s improvisations. It is probably no accident that his vocal timbre can evoke Eddie Jefferson, a pioneer in the style. Backed more than capably here by the pianist John di Martino and the bassist Steve LaSpina, Mr. Gates made a point of finessing Jefferson’s “Disappointed,” based on a Charlie Parker solo over Gershwin’s “Lady Be Good.” He also made a point of featuring some lyrical inventions of his own.

Wisely, he slipped a pair of songbook ballads into the set — “P.S. I Love You” and “You’ve Changed” — and each was a model of austere, straightforward pathos. And he closed with a winner: Monk’s “Let’s Call This,” with original lyrics about the dwindling flame of a love affair.

“When I first met you / You were so inviting,” Mr. Gates sang at the tune’s start, articulating clearly. He held out the last syllable, “ing,” for five and a half beats, echoing the jangle of Monk’s pianism, and expecting everyone to get it.

KCC Productions and the Museum of Contemporary Art present Big Poppa E and the E Band 3/25/11

Born in 1948 and now in his third decade as a professional performing artist, E continues to nurture his passion for the Blues. Growing up in New York, he discovered his purpose at the age of 13, when he was drawn to the sounds of Acoustic Blues, and got his first harmonica when he discovered Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, he developed his singer/songwriting talents, as well as an aptitude for playing other instruments beautifully… His specialty was the blues harp. He established himself as a ground-breaking harmonica player, and became a percussionist with Hodges, James and Smith (back in the early 70s) as well as a studio musician with Bolic Sound Studios, playing behind Ike and Tina Turner. He also played percussions on Sussex Records with Bobbi Hall behind Bill Withers in 1971 through 1974. In the 80s, he moved to Chicago where he played with the likes of John Prine, Jo Mapes, and Joseph Jarman.

While family and other commitments would interrupt his career, E always returned to his roots in blues, and 2000 saw the release of his second album, “The First Time Out”, an extraordinary recording that was an eclectic mix of ten original compositions comprising Blues, R&B, Jazz, Delta and Gospel. In 2002, E hit his stride, adding his exceptional harmonica skills and powerful vocals to the mix. He delivers charismatic, compelling, and passionate performances that are charged with emotion and filled with his authentic signature style. Always experimenting with new sounds, he sometimes makes bold, daring renditions of obscure tunes of legendary icons such as Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, adding his unique spin to them.

2006 was a creative year for E, what with three albums released and building his own record label, Black Owl Music. While his albums showcase the sensual range of his vocals and the use of his voice as an incredibly multi-faceted instrument, it is his haunting harp signature style that captivates and inspires his audience. “Mississippi Reminiscence” is the most personal of his work, and “Five Long Years: A Tribute To Carey Bell” has been hailed as sheer unadulterated blues.

Yes, you read that right. WooFstock. As in, woof woof, what your doggy says to you when he needs to go out, or sees someone at your door, or hears the front gate close, or you sneeze, or….

Anyway, this isn’t about my dog’s frequent and annoying habit of barking at the air, it’s about a fantastic, free, dog-friendly event sponsored by MarrVelous Pet Rescues & Adoptions. The location? Well, this is Florida after all, and all fabulous events here take place ocean-front, and Woofstock was no exception. Beautiful Founder’s Park in Islamorada, FL played host to the thousands of furry friends and the people who obsess over them.

Every dog you could imagine was represented at Woofstock: big Great Danes, tiny Chihuahuas, new hybrid types like my unique German Sheagle, marvelous mixes of all kinds, and even a fluffy white guy who was tie-dyed pink, blue, and green in true hippie form. Speaking of tie dye, there certainly was plenty of it. From the vendors to the staff, bright colorful fabric abounded, keeping the theme of the day consistent.

The adjacent dog park served to shed some energy off the excited pups, but all animals were leashed and well-behaved as they explored the many booths. Treats and lunch for dogs and humans alike were for sale at reasonable prices. Local restaurants offering fresh seafood added spice to the usual street food type fare. But by far, the most popular and exciting areas were the doggy dock diving and lure racing. For a meager $10, your little angel could race around the track chasing a stuffed animal or fly through the air and into the pool after his favorite toy. It’s a competition so make a note of your time and distance! Ours was 10.4 seconds, heck yeah!

Plenty of scents for doggy noses and sweet tunes for human eardrums polished up the day perfectly. A local band of teenagers brought ska style funk and fun loving fans who danced hard right up front. Juxtaposed thereafter was the middle aged group of rockers whose drummer crooned 70s ballads and 90s rock anthems to which everyone sings along.

Keys Woofstock was a well-organized event that was fun for the entire family. Next year we’ll be back, and I’ll be sure to get the word out in advance so everyone can enjoy it. If you would like to support Keys Woofstock, please follow the below link to make a donation to the Marr-Velous Pet Rescues & Adoptions of the Florida Keys.

Helping Haiti Art Exhibit and Benefit at Gallery Art 3/24/11

Helping Haiti
Art Exhibit and Benefit at Gallery Art
March 24th 7-10 pm
http://gallart.com

From Michael Capponi:
Please come support our Helping Haiti Fundraiser this Thursday at Gallery Art, we desperately need your support to keep this mission alive!

With your support, we have been able to provide food, tents, water, medical supplies and sustainable housing for the people of camp Belvil, since that tragic day. As most of you already know, we have moved 22 families to our new humanitarian village in Jacmel, Haiti. The families of this camp are celebrating and thankful for the opportunity to live a better life. We have been able to provide sustainable housing for each family and have enrolled over 35 children in Jacmel’s advanced school system.

I am hoping this fundraiser will be able to raise the necessary funds to continually support these families and provide the same opportunity for various families still in need. I have been working with the non-profit Lageho and Ken Hendel, in organizing an Art Exhibit and Fundraiser to help keep this mission alive!

Please join me tomorrow night at Gallery Art in the Promenade shops in Aventura. The doors open at 7pm. I hope you will stop by for a cocktail and a bite to eat. You’ll be able to show your support by adopting a family, purchasing the featured art or simply participating in the live auction and raffle. 100% of all proceeds benefit our mission for the people Haiti.

Please call my office to RSVP. 305-695-4410 or email rsvp@capponigroup.com

MDC Cultura del Lobo Performance Series Presents Last Meadow 3/25-26/11

Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25 – 26, at 8 p.m.
MDC’s Cultura del Lobo Performance Series Presents Last Meadow
The Colony Theater
1040 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach

Mining scenes from James Dean’s East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant films, Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People reach back fifty years to portray an America where the jig is up and the dream has died. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Cultura del Lobo Performance Series will present this powerful work, titled Last Meadow, on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25 – 26, at The Colony Theater in Miami Beach.

Last Meadow, which earned a 2010 Bessie Award, is set to a collage-like score created by composer Neal Medlyn and lighting by longtime collaborator Lenore Doxsee. With gorgeous dance passages, monologues and action, the show expresses longing and frustration in ways that words cannot. Gutierrez is accompanied onstage by Powerful People performers Michelle Boulé and Tarek Halaby.

“This is the most experimental performance that we are presenting this year,” said Elizabeth Doud, Cultura del Lobo’s artistic director. “Gutierrez’s work is important because it represents a young American voice that is directly questioning not only social norms but also norms in artistic practice. He is an intrepid dance maker who isn’t overly concerned with the aesthetics of beauty, but delivers a blend of dance-poetry that is unapologetic and irreverent, yet endearing in image, movement and voice.”
“We are proud to include Gutierrez’s work in the Cultura del Lobo Performance Series and stand behind emerging artists and their risk taking,” she added.

This presentation of Last Meadow is supported by the National Performance Network, which provides support for established and emerging artists in dance, music, theatre, performance art, puppetry and spoken word.

The Cultura del Lobo Performance Series is an MDC initiative, through the Cultural Affairs Department. It was originally conceived as a play on the name of the downtown campus (Wolfson) and the adventurous spirit of the college’s programs, and has a celebrated history of featuring international and culturally specific work, both traditional and contemporary, which would not otherwise be seen in this region. In fact, two recent Grammy Award winners – Esperanza Spalding and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra – were featured artists in the series.

Tickets for Last Meadow are $20 – $25 for general admission; students and seniors $18. MDC students, faculty and staff with proper ID receive a discount.

For more information, please contact MDC Cultural Affairs Department.

Avant Gallery
3850 N. Miami Avenue
Miami. Florida. 33127

Avant Gallery proudly presents the work of ‘Alec Monopoly’, a young street artist based in Los Angeles, known throughout major city centers such as New York, London and Los Angeles for his placement of the beloved protagonist of the synonymous board game over lampposts, billboards, walls and telephone posts.

‘Alec Monopoly’ is the alias of an unidentified graffiti artist, originally from New York City. The artist primarily works… in the urban environments of New York and Los Angeles, using varied materials (including stencils, spray paint, epoxies, varnishes and newspapers) to subversively depict the protagonist of the internationally-beloved board game, Monopoly. ‘Alec’ cites his artistic origins as learning from his mother, an artist, eventually abandoning traditional academically-driven art classes to pursue an individual methodology. ‘Alec’ and his work have been covered by The Huffington Post, The Wooster Collective (New York), Juxtapoz Magazine, and The Dirt Floor.com. Recently, Paramount Pictures commissioned Alec to design the logo for their new production company, Insurge. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.

Kids Eat Miami 4/9/11

Kids Eat Miami

Miami, FL 33132

Ticket price is $25.00, but tickets must be purchased from our site www.KidsEatMiami.com in order to get that price. What’s not to like!

Kids Eat Miami (“KEM”) is an event similar to the Signature Chef’s event presented by the March of Dimes in which well-known chefs from local restaurants share samplings of their menus with the public who might not otherwise be inclined to visit their restaurant. The event, like the “Taste of” events, is extremely popular and open to the public and the chefs usually attend and staff their booths.

KEM will have some significant and important differences from similar events:
 KEM will be family friendly;
 KEM will take place on Saturday afternoon, on April 9th, 2011;
 KEM will involve local restaurateurs and chefs who are focused on healthy eating and offer healthy fare;
 KEM will leverage the resources of a large number of entities throughout Miami Dade who focus on the Childhood Obesity and Nutrition issues, such as, but not limited to: Healthy Schools Program, Healthy Lifestyle, Alliance for a Healthy Generation; American Heart Association, and Common Threads;
 KEM will team child “graduates” of Common Threads with the local chefs in preparing and presenting the food offerings;
 KEM will have booths from local and national organizations extolling the virtues of healthy lifestyles.
 KEM will offer children a safe environment in which to learn and play.

Event proceeds will benefit the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and ATN’s Programming Fund.

ATN’s mission is to support the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s strategic plan to grow the Museum into a dynamic hub for cultural life in South Florida and an educational resource for the 21st century through educational, social, and philanthropic programming.

West Encounters East at the Lowe Art Museum

On the evening of Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at the Lowe Art Museum, Joel Hollander, Ph.D., full-time faculty member at the University of Miami, delivered an informative speech for the project “West Encounters East,” whose focus is to rethink the significance of cultural exchange and diversity by identifying emerging Latin American artists of Asian heritage. Dr. Hollander focused on reflections of Japanese art and culture in the imagery of contemporary Argentine artists, including Valeria Yamamoto, Ary Kaplan Nakamura, Guillermo Ueno, and Lucila Heinberg, whose work will be highlighted in a special pavilion at arteaméricas art fair, March 25 – 28, at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

“One of the primary considerations in ‘West Encounters East’ is to investigate how officially sponsored Japanese emigration programs to South America during the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century changed the ethnic and cultural heritage of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru, as well as other countries in the region,” said Dr. Hollander. He added, “The precedent for exploring how Western artists respond to Japanese art can be traced back to the French Impressionists who helped to shape the genesis of modern art.”

The lecture, which began with a moment of silence to honor the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, along with the reception and refreshments that followed, were sponsored by Stella M. Holmes, president of The Brickellian, Inc., an art consultancy group, and founder of Brickell Gallery Night. According to Ms. Holmes, “’West Encounters East’ is a natural evolution of Brickell Gallery Night’s mission to introduce emerging artists with Asian roots to the West.” She stated that, “For me, the emphasis is the fusion of the two traditions. I think of it as Artists Without Borders – a beautiful way that we can learn from each other through a meaningful exchange of culture.”

“Hill sounded fantastic. She’s probably the best female singer-rapper of all time (sorry, Nicki!), switching between Nina Simone-style soul incantations and limber Caribbean-inflected rhymes with ease.”
-Rolling Stone

“As she bobbed and weaved through the thickets of sound, it became clear that Hill had a firm grasp on bringing both the noise and the funk.”
-Variety

“Several of the songs from ‘Miseducation’ were substantially reworked, but Ms. Hill’s energetic delivery enabled the crowd to find familiar segments to embrace… it seemed clear that she has renewed her enthusiasm for the music on which she built her reputation.”
-The Wall Street Journal

Angela Valella, Changing Hands, 2011, photograph taken during installation.
February 24 – May 1, 2011

Miami artist Angela Valella’s installation, Changing Hands, is part of a series of exhibitions celebrating the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s 40th anniversary. The installation is composed of 24″x 36″ color and black and white prints on bond paper and a projection of interchangeable static images; it is more of a gesture than a documentary or a description of a place. The prints are derived from Google Earth satellite images, online archives, aerial photographs taken through a telescope and from the tops of cranes, and photographs taken around the city by the artist. These images have been enlarged and juxtaposed with photographs of the buildings, land, sky, and horizon surrounding the Hispanic Branch Library as well as elsewhere in the city.

Complimentary Prosecco & Tapas from 6-7pm

Continuing the Successful MaiArt Series, Maitardi Features Underwater Macro Photography, Figurative Realistic Paintings and Whimsical Reality Photography

On March 30th, Maitardi hosts its fifth MaiArt event with artists Henrik Welle, Bruce Gilling and Tom De Vita. Though with very different approaches to their subjects, all three artists work with light and colors in their pieces exploring emotional and visual contrasts and forms. Guests enjoy complimentary Prosecco and tapas from 6 to 7pm and music by Soul P until 9pm.

Henrik Welle, an avid diver and passionate about everything related to water, shares his underwater experiences through photography. Born in Germany and now living in Miami, Henrik’s work showcases nature’s creation up-close with its strange yet hypnotizing structures, forms and colors. “In a way most people will never see it otherwise,” comments Henrik. He chose media photography over film for the basic reason of capturing a moment and freezing it in time. “A photo can create an emotion, a feeling and inspire your imagination whenever you gaze at it,” Henrik adds.

Tom De Vita was born and raised in Queens, New York and currently owns his own De Vita Studio, an art and design company that creates murals and fine art, while teaching at the Art Institute of Forth Lauderdale, Barry University and Broward College. The essence of his work is based on “sea of visual noise” where he wants to force multiple readings of images and the deconstruction of their meanings. “We inherited our contemporary way of seeing, but I wanted to still preserve my conviction towards painting in the grand tradition of figuration,” De Vita explains.

England-born Bruce Gilling has been said to master the essence of photography. He projects intensity through spectacular angles, bright utopic colors and shadowing. His subjects are people, places and animals captured in such a way each picture transports the viewer into a whimsical world where perfection of movement, color and light is undeniable.

April’s MaiArt event will bring Michele Palmisano and Alex Heria. Michele is part of the Graspa Group family and his pieces focus on light and movement of elements like water as well as manipulations of plexiglass photography. Alex is a nationally recognized artist whose work has been exhibited in Miami, New York and Spain. MaiArt is scheduled for Wednesday April 27th at 6pm.

Located in the oak-shaded plaza corner of NE 2nd avenue and 39th Street (163 NE 39th Street), also known as the heart of the Miami Design District, the risto-bar, a European concept combining ristorante and bar, opened Fall 2009. Maitardi’s experience rests on a casual, outdoors and sociable ambiance, delicious tapas meant for sharing and friendly and professional service. The location has retained its architectural design with the floor to ceiling leaf-mosaic façade along with the native oak trees throughout the patio giving it an irresistible appeal to relax, catch up on work or a book, hang out with friends for happy hour or lunch with a client. Complimentary Wi-Fi and outside bar available.

Objektivity, Aquabooty Mia and Giant Step present: NueWave Renegades Miami 2011

Say New Jersey to certain people and the first thing they will think of is house music – the kind of music that laid down it’s roots in late 70s / 80s Club Zanzibar home to DJs such as Tony Humphries, Tee Scott and Larry Levan. The kind of music that was slowly elaborated on and built by producers such as Blaze and many many others. into a powerful pantheon that is respected worldwide.

Today Dennis Ferrer’s New Jersey house music imprint Objektivity carries the torch for house music – continuing that vibe in a way that reflects the original spirit without being retrograde. Ferrer has been riding high on a consistent stream of praise from fans and others alike. From a Grammy nomination for his remix of Dido to his crossover hit of 2010 “Hey Hey” to his alternative vocal track of 2011, “The Red Room”, Ferrer has a magic touch.

Never happy to sit on his laurels, this year Ferrer brings a new concept to Miami for Ultra Week with his hugely popular annual Objektivity event spread across two rooms in downtown Miami’s Grand Central venue. NeuWave Renegades is his new project moniker and features Ferrer alongside a rotation of friends who represent something of the spirit of US house music.
In Room 1 and as part of this special edition of the NeuWave Renegades tour, he will play back to back for the first time ever with his mentor and friend, Kerri Chandler. This marks the return to Miami of Chandler after years missing from the WMC circuit and in unison with Ferrer will surely be a night to be remembered. The Martinez Brothers who made their Miami debut in 2007 as Ferrer’s young proteges are all grown up now and back on this years bill with a stellar single “Issshhh!!!” dropping on Objektivity in the weeks leading up to the festivities. Dyed Soundorom of the now defunct Parisienne Freak N’ Chic crew and Circo Loco resident joins the lineup with his brand of modern house.

Room 2 welcomes Karizma who is back on the bill after a one year hiatus. Things just weren’t the same without him and expect nothing short of the usual CDJ extravaganza with his unique take on underground and soulful house. 19 year old Kyle Hall joins this lineup as a prelude to his scheduled date at Coachella in April. Hall’s eclectic blend of Detroit house, techno and bass energizes underground dance floors globally. DJ Qu and Anthony Parasole of the Deconstruct / Strength Music family mark their Miami performance debut with their edgy representation of New York deep house and techno. Objektivity soldier, Filsonik opens the night.

Touring In Support of their First Full-Length Album of Original Songs – First Light

Easy Star All-Stars, the musical collective known internationally for their wildly popular dub-reggae tributes to iconic rock albums – Dub Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd), Radiodread (OK Computer) and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band (The Beatles) are coming to South Florida on Saturday, April 9. Touring in support of their first full-length album of original songs, First Light (April 5, 2011), their live show will offer an extensive sampling of songs from each of these popular releases along with selections from the more bass-heavy remix album Dubber Side of the Moon and the original EP Until That Day.
Easy Star All –Stars are supported by Hawaii’s, The Green, whose self-titled debut album was named iTunes Best Reggae Album of 2010 and finished 2010 at #9 on the Billboard reggae charts, along with Cas Haley, who is best known as runner up on Season 2 of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”.

Easy Star All-Stars: Combining musical versatility, instrumental prowess, beautiful vocal harmonies and a superb rhythm section, the Easy Star All-Stars have established themselves as one of the top international reggae acts. Thanks to their best-selling tribute albums: Dub Side of the Moon (2003); Radiodread (2006); and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009), as well as the original EP, Until That Day (2008), the band has brought together fans of reggae, classic rock and indie rock into one big family. Their first full-length album of original songs, FIRST LIGHT, is set for release on April 5, 2011. Originally formed in 1997 for Easy Star Records’ earliest recordings, the Easy Star All-Stars existed mostly as a studio entity until releasing Dub Side of the Moon. The group, which operates as a collective with a rotating cast of musicians and singers, was put together by Easy Star co-founders Michael Goldwasser, Eric Smith and Lem Oppenheimer. These three have directed and managed the band ever since. In 2009, the All-Stars played 125 shows in 25 countries on 6 different continents, truly establishing themselves as one of the top reggae touring acts in the world. The band was nominated for a UK Festival Award for its three-day, three-stage performance at Glastonbury 2009. www.easystar.com

The Green: Formed in 2009 in Oahu, The Green blends roots reggae with traditional Hawaiian vibes. The Green’s self-titled debut album was named iTunes Best Reggae Album of 2010 and they were recently awarded Best Reggae Album at the 2011 Hawaii Music Awards. In February, they supported Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the Distant Relatives tour and they have several headlining and supporting dates in the US in 2011. Cas Haley: Cas Haley has spent his life developing a sound that is truly original, combining classic influences from Bob Wills to Bob Marley, with a powerfully soulful voice and prolific talent for song writing. His evolved style has helped him to share the stage with UB40, Burning Spear, Al Green, Martin Sexton, Blues Traveler, Soulive, Mofro, Jah Roots and many more. In 2007, Cas took an unusual opportunity to appear on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent” where he took the national audience by storm with his incredible rendition of Sting’s Walking on the Moon. His self-titled album (2008) has consistently remained in the top ten reggae albums on iTunes and the Billboard charts, finishing 2008 as the #8 Billboard Top Selling Reggae Album of the Year. Mixed by Danny Kalb (Ben Harper, Beck), his newest album, Connection (2010), bristles with chill grooves, rocking guitars and funky horns, all fuelling Cas’ irresistible melodies. www.cashaley.com

Certified Specialist of Wine Stephanie Miskew and Acclaimed Local Chefs
Lenore Nolan-Ryan, and Remy Gautier to Host

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University, continues its “Art of Wine and Food” tasting series with locally renowned chefs and Certified Specialist of Wine Stephanie Miskew in March and April. The once-a-month series gives attendees a social, fun and educational opportunity to learn about delicious wines and foods.

Each event within the series will be co-hosted by Miskew, author of the blog Stephanie Savors the Moment. March 24th, Chef Lenore Nolan-Ryan of Lenore Nolan-Ryan Cooking School and Catering in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea; and April 28th, Chef Remy Gautier of Argentelle in Fort Lauderdale will co-host.

During each tasting, attendees will enjoy three to four wines presented with food pairings. Miskew will discuss each wine, theregion it is from, color, aroma, flavor, etc. Each chef will describe the food experience and how the accompanying dish, artfully prepared and using the freshest and highest quality ingredients, was created. During and after each presentation, guests are encouraged to discuss the wines and pairings and will have the opportunity to ask questions; then socialize before moving on to the next wine.

Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Miskew is an independent wine consultant and enjoys blogging about adventures in food & wine on Stephanie Savors the Moment.

Chef Lenore Nolan-Ryan opened Lenore Nolan-Ryan Cooking School and Catering in 2000. She was chosen by Paula Deen to represent the entrée category of a cooking contest sponsored by Kraft Foods. Chef Nolan-Ryan creates recipes and videos that are used as sales and promotional pieces for various companies. Currently, she is writing a memoirs cookbook with her sister and launching a line of spices and food.

In 1981, he joined the culinary staff of New York City’s Carlyle Hotel. He founded Argentelle in New York City in 1984.

All wine tastings take place from 6 until 7:30 p.m. The Museum’s galleries remain open from 5 pm until the start of the wine tastings to allow a private viewing of stellar installations of art from around the world. Mayor Myron Rosner Of North Miami Beach Among Those Honored At The First Annual Legacy Gala At The Ancient Spanish Monastery

The Historically Designated Ancient Spanish Monastery, widely regarded as the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere, was built in 1133 AD in Sacramenia, Spain. Cistercian monks occupied The Monastery for nearly 700 years. Dismantled and shipped to the United States by William Randolph Hearst in 1925, the Cloisters of The Monastery were reassembled in North Miami Beach, Florida in 1952. In 1953 TIME magazine called The Monastery “history’s biggest jigsaw puzzle” and chronicled the journey and the ancient artifacts of the collection.

In keeping with the unique legacy of The Ancient Spanish Monastery, The Cloisters Foundation of The Ancient Spanish Monastery is proud to honor individuals whose distinguished achievements and contributions have provided a legacy for community involvement and exceptional leadership. At 7:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, 2011 on the picturesque grounds of The Ancient Spanish Monastery the First Annual Legacy Gala, rightly deemed “Preserving the Legacy,” will honor selected community leaders whose legacy in Miami-Dade County has been longstanding.

The distinguished honorees of the First Annual Legacy Gala are: The Honorable Myron Rosner, Mayor of North Miami Beach, Dr. Dorothy Jenkins-Fields, Founder of the Black Archives History and Research Foundation, Mr. Michael Snyder Esq. President of North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Tony Lesesne, Co-founder of Lesesne Media Group and InFocus Magazine.

The Board of Directors and Trustees of The Cloisters Foundation of the The Ancient Spanish Monastery cordially invite the South Florida community to join them and Mistress of Ceremonies Neki Mohan of WPLG Local 10 in an elegant evening of cocktails, dinner, and dancing under the stars in honor of these exceptional community leaders.

In addition to a silent auction, cocktails, dinner, and dancing, invited guests can look forward to the musical stylings of Jazz performer Jon Saxx, a special designer fashion show presented by The Teen Board, and a festive steel band ensemble. Meet with living legacies at the historically designated Ancient Spanish Monastery located at 16711 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida 33160 on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 7:00 pm. Attire, Black tie.

For more information or invitations to this event, please contact The Monastery at 305-945-1461, or visit http://LegacyGala2011.wordpress.com to RSVP. Cost per person is $100. All benefits are used for the preservation of art, antiquities, building and edifices of this historic site.

During wine, wander, wonder at the bass museum of art, panelists will be discussing the slow art movement, dedicated to realizing the idea that “if you look slowly, you will see.”

karelle levy | stitching bitches
dr. adrienne von lates, phd | bass museum of art

www.pecha-kucha.org/night/miami/10

The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach will host a PechaKucha, a creative networking event, exploring the local Slow Art Movement on Saturday, March 19th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. as part of the museum’s monthly Wine, Wander, and Wonder program. PechaKucha is a Japanese inspired event for creatives to meet, network and share their work in public.

With 20 Power Point slides shown for 20 seconds each, local thought leaders – Myra Wexler (Musing with Myra), Jason Hedges (Artist), Kathleen Carignan, Esq (LegalArt Residency Program), Karelle Levy (Stitching Bitches), Dr. Adrienne Von Lates (Bass Museum of Art), Kerry McLaney (Miami Independent Thinkers), Dennis Leyva (Miami Beach Art in Public Spaces) – will have about seven minutes to talk about developing conversations and community issues around their passion in the arts.

A wine reception available to all attendees will immediately follow the presentation.

About Slow Art
Slow Art Day started in 2009 as an experimental program with the hypothesis to see if it was possible to make great art more enjoyable and accessible to the general public – i.e. to share the “secret” that art experts, curators, educators, artists and others know: that if you look slowly, you will see. The end goal is to create “inspired, not tired” art experiences that keep audiences engaged. www.slowartday.com/index.html

About PechaKucha
PechaKucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity with over 380 cities represented hosting 900 events last year. The combined power of these cities equates to an incredible 10,000 presentations and 200,000 PechaKucha attendees annually.

Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the PechaKucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. www.pecha-kucha.org/cities/miami

Saturday, March 26th
Ritz-Carlton South Beach

Honoring The Miami Dolphins CEO, Mike Dee and Univision President, César Conde.

Community and corporate champions will join Comcast and City Year Miami to celebrate the work of 82 young leaders who dedicate a full year of tutoring and mentoring in Miami-Dade County’s most challenged public schools.

Corps members work towards lowering the high school dropout rate by serving in eight of Miami-Dade County’s lowest performing schools. Since its inception to our community in 2008, City Year Miami corps members have served over 160,000 hours each year to Miami-Dade County.

As City Year Miami completes its third year of service in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, it will be joined by corporate and community leaders during its annual Red Jacket Ball on Saturday, March 26th at the Ritz-Carlton in South Beach. “As the presenting sponsor of this year’s Red Jacket Ball, Comcast believes strongly in the work City Year does in our most underperforming schools, putting students back on track towards high school graduation,” said Klayton Fennell, Regional Vice President, Comcast – FL East Coast Region.“Comcast has proudly partnered with City Year for more than ten years and we are thrilled to support the young leaders who have answered their call to service.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Univision, President, César Conde, The Miami Dolphins, CEO, Mike Dee and Senator Anitere Flores will be amongst the honorees and speakers for the evening in recognition of their commitment and dedication to City Year and the community as a whole. It is through the efforts and partnership with these corporations, among others, that City Year has been able to demonstrate a high level of success in the public schools it serves. The critical support of government, individuals, foundations and corporate partners have allowed City Year Miami to serve over thousands of students throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools over its first three years of operations. Proceeds raised from this event will allow City Year to grow its program reach for the 2011-2012 school year.

“We are truly excited to host City Year Miami’s closest champions and supporters on a night when we celebrate the work of our 82 corps members who are everyday heroes to the students we serve in Miami–Dade County schools,” said Saif Y. Tonight, we are presenting two exciting multi instrumental groups: El Muco from New Haven, CT and The UOM from Miami, FL.

El Muco’s Brian Kane and Scott Petersen will perform on custom designed electronic instruments, creating ambient evolving and self-sustaining sonic textures with a high degree of complexity and internal life. El Muco will talk about their instruments before the concert and invite the audience to play the instruments before and after the concert!

The UOM uses a gyroscope as a metaphor for collective improvisation. Through the exploration of current and vintage technologies, the UOM seeks the inner sanctum of sound art: the majesty of a gesture that cannot be repeated and an experience that is at once unforeseeable and inevitable.

This event is a part of XXI Subtropics Festival (subtropics.org).

O, Miami Miami-Dade Poetry Festival April, 2011

Is it possible to get all 2.5 million people in Miami-Dade County to encounter a poem in just thirty days? Who would even try?

University of Wynwood is proud to announce the most ambitious project in its three-year history: O, Miami, a county- wide celebration of contemporary poetry.

How Pedestrian – Poems on the Street

[tubepress mode=”user” userValue=”UofWynwood” hqThumbs=”true” resultsPerPage=”31″ showRelated=”false”]

O, Miami is a month-long effort to get every single person in Miami-Dade County—all 2.5 million of them—to encounter a poem. Designed and produced by University of Wynwood, O, Miami is made possible through generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

“O, Miami will help engage South Florida in great literature, and remind us all how important and enriching poetry can be in our lives,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/arts.

Beginning April 1st and ending April 30th, Miami-Dade County will be flooded by over 30 events and 23 projects that bring poetry to a new audience. Over fifty poets from around the world will participate, in addition to 30 partner organizations and a vast array of cultural curators.

“Traditionally, you ask the audience to come to your festival,” says O, Miami Director P. Scott Cunningham, “We tried to design a festival that comes to the audience.”

Events include

-Poetry readings by United States Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin, the actor James Franco, Tony Hoagland, and Iraq War Veteran Brian Turner

-Poet Anne Carson collaborating with choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Jonah Bokaer from the Merce Cunningham Dance Company

-The Anthology of Rap—Yale University Press’s definitive text on hip-hop lyrics—presents an evening of rap and poetry

-Dual language readings by Forrest Gander, Victor Rodriguez Nunez, and Raúl Zurita

-Eating Our Words, a night of food and poetry inside of Key Biscayne’s Bill Bagg State Park

-Abe’s Penny Live, a month-long exhibition of Miami photographers designed to incite new work by local poets (with original “writing spaces” designed by New World School of the Arts students)

Projects include

-“Herald Bloom”, a poetic spokesperson for The Miami Herald who will be writing original verse versions of the day’s news published on miamiherald.com and on Twitter @heraldbloom

-Poetry Society of America’s Poetry in Motion program on Miami-Dade County buses, featuring a poem by Charles Simic in English beside brand-new translations of that poem in Spanish and Creole

-A “Poetic Guide” to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, created by local Miami poets and installed inside the Gardens throughout the month of April

-“One Poem, One Community”: a poetry postcard created by Florida Center for the Literary Arts and featuring a poem in English and Spanish by W.S. Merwin that will be distributed throughout Miami-Dade County

-“Now Taste This!” Poetry in Miami area restaurants curated by Jen Karetnik

-“How Pedestrian” Random Miamians will be stopped on the street and asked to read a contemporary poem; then the videos will be posted to omiami.org

-Poetry banners in Everglades National Park

-Poems in Miami-Dade County schools and prisons

O, Miami begins on the morning of April 1 with a dedication ceremony and special announcement at the Ziff Ballet Opera House courtyard at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and culminates in a four-day celebration titled “Final Lines” at the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center on Miami Beach.

“Final Lines” begins on Wednesday, April 27th with a bilingual reading by Forrest Gander and Victor Rodriguez-Nunez. Thursday, April 28th features the poetry of James Franco and Tony Hoagland, moderated by Campbell McGrath, and also includes a late night event hosted by Literary Death Match that will feature New Yorker editor Ben Greenman and Miami author Patricia Engel. On Friday, April 29th, the main hall at New World Center welcomes Yale University Press’s “The Anthology of Rap”, followed by a late night performance at Purdy Lounge by Andrew Whiteman from Broken Social Scene and Andrew Yeomanson, aka DJ Le SPAM of the SPAM All-Stars. “Final Lines” culminates on Saturday the 30th with poets Brian Tuner, Raúl Zurita, Jill McDonough in the afternoon and W.S. Merwin and Carla Faesler in the evening.

The highly anticipated race expects to draw hundreds of spectators to cheer on the fierce competition, as well as enjoy an activity-filled day on the sizzling sands of Miami Beach. The Nautica South Beach Triathlon benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where a portion of the proceeds goes directly to pediatric cancer research. Celebrities confirmed to participate include “Rules of Engagement” stars Patrick Warburton and Megyn Price, “Pirates of the Caribbean’s” Patrick Fabian and returning participants, 2010 Ironman World Champion Chris “Macca” McCormack, actors Geoff Stults and Cristian de la Fuente, as well as actress Heather Tom and NBC “The Biggest Loser’s” Ali Vincent.

Participants from around the world will travel to South Beach for what has become one of the top athletic events of the year in South Florida. At 6:55 a.m., the International Distance Race will kick off with an invigorating 1.5K ocean swim, a 40K bike over Miami Beach’s causeways, and conclude with a 10K run alongside Miami Beach’s famous Art Deco District. At 7:40a.m., participants in the Classic Distance Race will hit the beach for a half-mile ocean swim, 19-mile bike and four-mile run. Both races will make their grand finish on the warm and smooth sands of South Beach.

“With the success of last year’s Nautica South Beach Triathlon, we are pleased to welcome back our loyal competitors, along with a new group of dedicated athletes, triathletes and paratriathletes, as they prepare to take on the challenging journey ahead, “ said Karen Murray, President of Nautica®. “South Beach continues to be the perfect destination for the competition and we are excited for this year’s participants to make it an event to remember.”

This year, for the first time, the Nautica South Beach Triathlon will be a part of The Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup, an internationally-renowned series for both professional and amateur athletes that is made up of seven of the most prominent international-distance triathlon events in the United States. In the professional series, the fastest endurance athletes on the planet compete for points across America in pursuit of the Toyota Cup, in addition to one of the richest prize purses in the world. Accordingly, the most accomplished Elite amateurs compete for the Elite Amateur Championship. At the amateur level, top age group athletes from each race will be eligible to compete for their respective Amateur Championships at the Toyota US Open Triathlon in Dallas, Texas on October 2, 2011.

“For the past four years, we’ve teamed up with Nautica to bring together athletes from around the globe to swim, bike and run in one of the most renowned cities in the United States,” said Michael Epstein, President of MESP, Inc. “It is with great excitement that we welcome this event back to Miami Beach and continue toward our goal of promoting healthy bodies and raising money for an amazing cause.”

2010’s participants included twelve-time Ironman champion Chris “Macca” McCormack, co-anchor and national correspondent for NBC’s “Today Show” Natalie Morales, actress Eliza Dushku, former NBA player Rick Fox, NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” winner Ali Vincent, “The Bold and the Beautiful’s” Heather Tom, “The Bachelor’s” Andy Baldwin, three-time Winter X Games freestyle skiing gold medalist Sarah Burke and returning competitor, actor Geoff Stults, who helped raise $175,000 for St. Jude. Organizers of the Nautica South Beach Triathlon, the sister event to the popular Nautica Malibu Triathlon, are expecting to raise more than last year and already the sign-up and registration numbers have exceeded 2010’s figures.

For more information or to register for the Nautica South Beach Triathlon please visit the website at www.nauticasobetri.com. Registration is open to all. Aesthetics and Values 2011 at The Frost Art Museum Opening 3/23/11

The Frost Art Museum Presents
2011 Aesthetics & Values Exhibition An art exhibition curated by FIU Honor’s College Students
March 23, from 6 pm to 9 pm
Target Wednesday After Hours
The Frost Art Museum
10975 SW 17 Street
Miami, FL 33199.

Writing done with fly pigment, ping pong balls in the shape of clouds and paper shapes that seem to go on forever are just a few of the objects that bridge the line between the real and surreal, the natural and man-made and the figurative and abstract works in the next installation of Aesthetics & Values Fine Art Exhibition (A&V) at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU). Sixty-four FIU Honors College students worked with 10 of Miami’s most notable artists at the sixth annual A&V exhibition. This event, which is free and open to the public, runs from March 8, 2011 through April 17, 2011. The opening reception is March 23, 2011 during Target Wednesday After Hours from 6 pm to 9 pm at The Frost Art Museum located on 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199.

“This collaboration has proven to be quite successful,” said Carol Damian, Director and Chief Curator of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum. “Now in its second year at the museum, this is a unique experience for students to learn the intricacies of curating an exhibition within the confines of a true operational museum.”

Each of these works will have visitors challenging the concept of reality. The A&V 2011 exhibition will feature the works of Daniel Arsham, José Bedia, Ivan Toth Depeña, Jacin Giordano, Fabian Peña, Karen Rifas, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, John Sanchez, Jen Stark and Antonia Wright. Several of the artists have created works specifically for this year’s exhibition.

“Most of my recent pieces are made with insect parts in a process where I transform these repulsive creatures into other anatomies. I re-context these organic elements into significant objects that address existential matters. The questioning of the artwork as a cultural product happens through an image of death and resurrection. The viewer’s perception is relocated; it is a “re-awakening” to place the spectator in an ambiguous perceptual trap. The artwork becomes both a map and a detour,” says artist Fabian Peña, whose work for the exhibition is a phrase written with fly pigment across the windows on the first floor of The Frost Art Museum.

The Aesthetics & Values seminar teaches students about the role art plays in the social and cultural events in history and our daily lives. Taught by artist and Honors College John Bailly, the class aims to show how artists have enforced or challenged authority and ideas on controversial social and cultural issues. Students participate in the art community and learn how art makes people see the world differently. The students, who major in many different fields, then act as curators and work closely with established local artists to create their own increasingly prestigious contemporary art exhibition. The Aesthetics & Values class is respected not only locally, but across the nation. A&V students have annually presented at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference (NCHC) since 2007.

A&V will provide student-run tours of the exhibition on March 22, 2011 from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at The Frost Art Museum. The opening reception will be during the museum’s popular Target Wednesday After Hours event on March 23, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. Target Wednesday After Hours is intended to supplement The Frost Art Museum’s exhibitions and grant visitors the opportunity to meet contemporary artists and connect with thought-provoking art of all mediums, live music, dance, films, and talks.

The Aesthetics and Values seminar, taught by artist and Honors College Fellow John Bailly, examines the vital role visual art plays in the social and cultural dialogue surrounding controversial issues. It investigates how artists have challenged or enforced authority by creating new aesthetics. It further explores how art is used to initiate, accelerate, or combat social change. Lowe Museum presentation of West Encounters East 3/16/11

Brian Dursum, director of Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, and Stella M. Holmes, founder of The Brickellian Inc. and Brickell Gallery Night, invite you to the presentation of West Encounters East
Wednesday, March 16, 8-10 p.m.
Lowe Art Museum
1301 Stanford Drive
UM’s Coral Gables campus.

The event will be presented under the auspices of the Consulate General of Argentina in Miami.
Free and Open to the Public

The evening includes an informative speech by Joel Hollander, Ph.D., an art historian and full-time faculty member at the UM, focusing on reflections of Japanese art and culture in the imagery of contemporary Argentine artists, including Valeria Yamamoto, Ary Kaplan Nakamura, Guillermo Ueno, and Lucila Heinberg. This presentation will be followed by a reception and refreshments. The work of these artists will be shown in a special pavilion at arteamericas art fair, March 25 – 28, Miami Beach Convention Center).

Ms. Holmes said the focus of “West Encounters East” is to rethink the significance of cultural exchange and diversity in contemporary society by identifying emerging and mid-career Latin American artists of Asian heritage.

“It’s a natural evolution of Brickell Gallery Night’s mission to introduce emerging artists with Asian roots to the West,” Ms. Holmes said. “For me, the emphasis is the fusion of the two traditions. I think of it as Artists Without Borders – a beautiful way that we can learn from each other through a meaningful exchange of culture.”

“One of the primary considerations in ‘West Encounters East’ is to investigate how officially sponsored Japanese emigration programs to South America during the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century changed the ethnic and cultural heritage of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru, as well as other countries in the region,” Dr. Hollander added. “The precedent for exploring how Western artists respond to Eastern art and culture can be traced back to the French Impressionists who helped to shape the genesis of modern art.”

The Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti event was conceived after the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010. At the time, the InterContinental Miami reached out to its staff to determine how many were from and/or had family in Haiti. Nearly 90 employees, approximately one-fifth of the hotel’s staff, were affected. The hotel assisted its employees and families in a variety of ways such as assistance in locating lost loved ones and monetary and product donations. The fundraising event was created shortly thereafter to be able to have a greater reach in assisting the people of Haiti.

The InterContinental Miami organizes this event by donating its staff time and event space and services with 100 percent of the event proceeds going the Project Medishare and IFA. Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti was born of compassion and the urgency to partner with local community organizations in the relief efforts. ” We are honored to partner for the second year with International Firefighters Assistance and to begin a new partnership with Project Medishare,” said Robert Hill, General Manager of the InterContinental Miami. “One year later, this event takes on a greater importance because Haiti is not forgotten. More than ever we need to continue to promote awareness and provide much needed help that is still required.”

Guests of Chefs With A Purpose: Haiti will be greeted with music of renowned Haitian performers Mushy Widmaier and Phyllisia Ross. The event will feature over 20 tasting stations each offering a signature menu item by the participating top chefs. The evening’s silent auction will feature items ranging from hotel stays, unique dining experiences, art and other luxury items. A new addition this year is a Haitian art exhibit by Michele Frisch, Haiti’s leading art curator and collector. From March 16 through April 6, the lobby of the InterContinentalMiami will feature Haitian art from the Galerie Marassa collection and coincide with arteaméricas, the premier fair of art from Latin America. Advanced purchase tickets are $80 and will available starting Friday, February 18 through the event’s website at www.chefswithapurpose.org. The website will also feature updates on the chefs and the evening festivities as it becomes available.

Magic City Memoirs latest project from Andy Garcia at Miami International Film Festival By Betty Alvarez

This already sold out independent feature-length film directed, produced, written by and starring an ensemble cast and crew of Miami locals. Garcia serves as the film’s executive producer.

Magic City Memoirs is the story of three Miami high school friends-Milkey, Eric, and angle-who revel in their world of private school privilege and lax parental oversight while living large in the hip hop lifestyle of parties, fast cars, fast boats and easy sex. Miami director Aaron Salgado and producer J.D. Freixas capture the texture and energy of this pulse-pounding tropical paradise as only true insiders could. The cast included many locals and natives, including Garcia-Lorido, Nathalie Martinez (Detroit 1-8-7), Jordi Vilasuso (All My Children), and newcomers J.R. Villarreal and Mikey, Michael Cardelle as Eric and Andres Dominguez as Angel.

Family-Style Sundays At The Stage
New Live Music Venue Offers Families a Place to Experience Art Every Sunday

The owners of Miami’s newest live music and entertainment venue, The Stage, are impassioned when it comes to the impact art can have on a child. After watching schools cut art programs for years, owners Carlos Garcia and Sasha Torres wanted to give the community a place where children can experience art in its many forms. With their Family-Style-Sundays at The Stage parents and children have a whole new arena to explore music, art and food every weekend.

Every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Family-Style-Sundays at The Stage will host a farmer’s market style festival that includes live music, various activities, and local vendors. There is no entry fee. Food is available from Gastropod, Miami’s mobile gourmet, which will have a permanent home at The Stage in the near future. The Stage will also offer interactive art and music classes in the coming months.

“What I think attracts families on Sundays is this relaxed vibe that comes from having great bands like Stokeswood and Locos Por Juana,” said Lizzie Easton of Soula Booking, one of the minds behind The Stage. The Stage has invited some of Miami’s hottest bands to come out on Sundays to showcase more mellow sounds complementary to the family environment.

Inspired by the French Market in New Orleans, Garcia saw how families flocked to a kid-friendly weekend diversion. “I think it’s vital to get back to the basics. We get so wrapped up with our everyday lives that we forget how important it is to spend quality time with our families,” he explained. Sunday’s have always been reserved as a family day, “at The Stage we’re giving families something much more exciting to do than family dinner” Torres boasted.
