OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, will open its 24th edition with the first Florida live screening of “B-Boy Blues” (2021) at The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater on April 22 at 7 p.m. Producer Circle members and filmmakers will enjoy a 5:30 p.m. pre-event Filmmakers Soirée. The film will be followed by a live Q & A and an opening night party featuring cast from the film, filmmakers and Vanguard honoree Venezuelan actress, model, and philanthropist Patricia Velásquez.

“B-Boy Blues” USA (2021), is an African American romantic comedy-drama based on the 1994 groundbreaking, and beloved classic book by James Earl Hardy. Class and culture clash when Mitchell, a college-educated journalist from Brooklyn, and Raheim, a homeboy-bike messenger from Harlem, fall in love. Despite his friends’ misgivings and several red flags, Mitchell is enraptured by the incredibly sexy and smooth Raheim, but the repercussions of their mutual obsession will affect his work, friendships, and family. Described as “Moonlight” meets “Queer As Folk,” this unapologetic celebration of African American gay men will leave you wanting more. The film stars Timothy Richardson, Thomas Mackie, Brandee Evans, Landon G. Woodson, Ledisi and Heather B. “B-Boy Blues” was the recipient of the 2021 Narrative Feature Fan Favorite at American Black Film Festival and an official selection of Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Fil Festival 2022.

An opening night party will also follow the film with guest of honor and Vanguard Award winner Patricia Velásquez. Velásquez is best known for her portrayal of Anck-su-namun in “The Mummy” (1990) and its sequel, “The Mummy Returns” (2001). She has appeared in numerous other films including “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019) and television shows including “Arrested Development” and “The L Word.” She is the founder of the Wayuu Taya Foundation which is dedicated to aiding Venezuelans struggling along the Colombian border. She was appointed the UNESCO Artist for Peace and is a Goodwill Ambassador at the Organization of the American States.

Continuing its mission to unite the community through premier social events and programs that inspire, entertain, educate and encourage a sense of community, this year’s festival features more than 45 international features and documentary screenings, panel discussions, three shorts programs, exclusive virtual showings, Cocktails & Cinema Happy Hours and parties that will take place across various venues in Miami-Dade County through May 1.

Experience an immersive evening of music and art at this Art Week 2021 capstone event. Composed in 1874 and orchestrated by Maurice Ravel in 1922, Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by a posthumous show of more than 400 paintings and drawings by Modest Mussorgsky’s close friend, architect and artist Viktor Hartmann, who died in 1873. In this dynamic presentation, each of the work’s ten movements and five “promenades” will be paired with projected images created by leading contemporary artists (Doug Argue, Omar Ba, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Claudia DeMonte, Juan Roberto Diago, Michele Oka Doner, Carlos Estévez, Karen LaMonte, Yassi Mazandi, Ed McGowin, Gladys Nilsson, Virgil Ortiz, Carlos Quintana, Alexis Rockman, Arthur Simms, and Agnieszka Traczewska) as well as key works from the Lowe’s permanent collection.

The evening also includes music by Aaron Copland, Julia Perry and others.

(Virtual) Miami Champagne Week Day 2: The Art of Perrier-Jouët

Join us for Day 2 of Miami Champagne Week to experience champagne from one of the region’s most unique Houses, Maison Perrier-Jouët. The House was founded by two independent-minded free spirits who shared a passion for art and nature – and a bold vision for champagne.

Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët founded Maison Perrier-Jouët in 1811 with a desire to create a Champagne House with a difference. They selected Chardonnay as the signature grape of Maison Perrier-Jouët, elevating it from a little-used grape variety to the cornerstone of the world-renowned intricate, floral style of Perrier-Jouët champagne. Their attachment to the terroir, unconventional vision of champagne and belief in creativity redefined the history of champagne.

Alessandra Esteves, DipWSET, MW candidate, Director of Wine Education for Florida Wine Academy, will co-host the Webinar with Perrier-Jouët Champagne Ambassador Elise Cordell.

We will taste the following champagnes:
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Brut Blason Rosé
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Edition Premiere 2007

Date: October 14th, 2020, from 6pm to 7.30pm

PRESS STATEMENT
MIAMI BEACH | SEPTEMBER 2 | 2020

Due to the pandemic’s impact, Art Basel announces the cancellation of its Miami Beach fair

Given the current situation regarding the pandemic’s impact, which spans from South Florida to other parts of the country and the world; limitations and uncertainty about the staging of large-scale events; international travel restrictions and bans, as well as quarantine regulations within the United States and internationally, alongside other factors, Art Basel has no other option but to cancel the 2020 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. Art Basel in Miami Beach was scheduled to take place from December 3 to December 6, 2020 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Noah Horowitz, Director Americas, Art Basel said: ‘It is with great regret and disappointment that we announce the cancellation of our December show in Miami Beach, as we know how crucial our show is for our galleries, as well as for the greater Miami arts community and economy. We thank everyone who shared their perspectives and insights with us over the past months and weeks and look forward to returning to Miami Beach next year to deliver a successful show.’

As the artworld continues to face momentous challenges, Art Basel remains firmly committed to supporting the global gallery community in the best way possible through its digital initiatives and by hosting its upcoming 2021 shows in Hong Kong, Basel, and Miami Beach. Art Basel’s digital initiatives will continue this fall with two individual thematic editions of its Online Viewing Rooms: ‘OVR:2020’, dedicated to artworks produced during 2020 and running from September 23 to 26, and ‘OVR:20c’, presenting works created between 1900 and 1999 from October 28 to 31. These digital events will be followed in December by Online Viewing Rooms that will be open to all galleries accepted to the 2020 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. Further details on the upcoming Online Viewing Rooms will follow in the coming weeks.

As has been communicated previously, galleries selected for Art Basel in Miami Beach 2020 will not be charged any participation/booth fees for the December show and application fees will be rolled over to 2021 for accepted galleries.

The next edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach will take place from December 2 to December 5, 2021, with preview days on December 1 and December 2, 2021.

An Evening of Music and Thought

with guest speakers Allison Matulli and Darius Daughtry
Hosted by Nicole Henry

WHAT: The South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents a FREE Livestream broadcast of the South Beach Chamber Ensemble performing chamber music by African-American and African-French composers, with poetry and performance by Allison Matulli and Darius V. Daughtry

The program comprises four works:

Joseph Bologne: String Quartet #1 in C major (1771)
Jessie Montgomery: Strum (2012)
DBR: String Quartet No. 1, “X” (1993)
George Walker: String Quartet #1(1946)

WHO: Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) was a champion fencer, classical composer, virtuoso violinist, friend of Mozart and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris. Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first known classical composer who was of African ancestry; he composed numerous string quartets and other instrumental music, and opera.

Jessie Montgomery is an acclaimed composer, violinist, and educator. She is the recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award from the ASCAP Foundation, and her works are performed frequently around the world by leading musicians and ensembles. Her music interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, language, and social justice, placing her squarely as one of the most relevant interpreters of 21st-century American sound and experience.

Daniel Bernard Roumain (“DBR”) is a prolific and endlessly collaborative composer, performer, educator, and social entrepreneur. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR has worked with artists from Philip Glass to Bill T. Jones to Lady Gaga; appeared on NPR, American Idol, and ESPN; and has collaborated with the Sydney Opera House and the City of Burlington, Vermont. He has been acclaimed as a violinist and activist.

George Theophilus Walker (1922-2018) was an American composer, pianist, and organist, who was the first African American to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “Lilacs” in 1996. Over the course of five decades, he balanced a career as a concert pianist, teacher, and composer. In 1946, Walker composed his String Quartet #1. A string orchestra arrangement of the second movement of that work received its world premiere in a radio broadcast that was conducted by pianist Seymour Lipkin. Originally titled “Lament”, Walker later changed the title to “Lyric for Strings.” It has been one of the most frequently performed orchestral works by a living American composer.

The performers:

The South Beach Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1997 by Michael Andrews. It began with a free concert of Haydn and Dvorak Piano Trios at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach. Our Music in Beautiful Spaces series has been supported by Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council and the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs for more than 20 years. The ensemble is one of the only arts organizations in south Florida dedicated to offering affordable chamber music programs to new audiences while showcasing local musical talent. Music in Motion: Miami to Rio, August and September 2005, was a great success. Our performances of Villa-Lobos, Copland and Mendelssohn at the Villa-Lobos Museum, Rio de Janeiro and Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, were well received in both countries. Music in Motion: Miami-Argentina-Brazil, September 2007, included concerts and student programs in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Buenos Aires, Miami Beach and Miami Shores.

MOAD is teaming up with the Ceramic League of Miami (CLM) to bring this art experience to the South Florida community. With a special focus in ceramic arts, CLM prioritizes access and inclusion, creating environments that are tailored to various experience levels. This month, MOAD Makes will pay tribute to the ancient teachings of the Chilalo, a tradition that Ramírez has championed into present day art spaces.

This program is inspired by Miami Dade College’s Kislak Collection.

Indigenous and Afro-diasporic spiritual systems have long interested internationally acclaimed artist José Bedia, who avidly collects ritualistic and ceremonial art. Bedia has traveled extensively to research and expand his knowledge of the people and the places where this art is created.

Bedia and Carol Damian, Curator of the Kislak Center, discuss how collecting and collections enhance our world view, both historically and in the present. Examining a selection of works from the Jay I. Kislak Collection at MDC and the artist’s own collection, Bedia and Damian explore the significance of these fascinating objects to our cultural history.

One of Miami’s most prominent artists, Jose Bedia was born in Havana, Cuba, and was one of the pioneering group of young artists in the groundbreaking 1981 exhibition Volumen 1, which helped spark a transformation of the Cuban cultural scene. His deep interest in indigenous American and Afro-Transatlantic cultures have led to both anthropological study and personal engagement with the religious beliefs of “La Regla Kongo” (in which he was initiated in 1983), the “Regla de Ocha,” and the Leopard Society of Abakuas. Fascinated by the African roots of American culture, Bedia has traveled widely in Africa and Latin America. His work has been exhibited around the world, including in the biennials of Havana, São Paulo, Venice, and Beijing, and is included in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Tate; Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Daros Collection; Institut Valencià d’Art Modern; Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

Dr. Carol Damian is an art historian, former Professor of Art History in the School of Art and Art History at Florida International University, and former Director and Chief Curator of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU. She has contributed to numerous publications and lectures frequently on Latin American and Caribbean art, and the local art scene. She is currently Curator of the Kislak Center, part of the Miami Dade College Special Collections, housed at the Freedom Tower; and of the Chapel of La Merced Colonial Collection at Corpus Christi in Miami.

Kislak Center programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. They are sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
