Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina
2301 SE 17th Street,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316

Cost: $100

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will host its 25th annual History Makers fundraiser on Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m., at the Superyacht Pavilion facility on the south grounds of Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina (2301 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). This year’s honorees are The Denison Family (Broward Marine), Broward County yachting industry forerunners, who will receive a History Makers Pioneer Family Award and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), which will be honored with a Legacy Business Award for its 60 years of industry and service at the event that commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Previous History Maker honorees have included The Forman Family, “Alligator Ron” Bergeron, City Commissioner Steven Glassman, developer Dev Motwani, H. Wayne Huizenga, Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, The Sun-Sentinel, Winterfest and Susan and Buddy Lochrie.

The Denison’s company, Broward Marine, and its workforce, were largely responsible for much of the marine industry that developed over the course of their 50 years of yacht construction that started on the south fork of the New River in Fort Lauderdale. In 1948, on their honeymoon, Frank and Gertrude Denison decided to buy a boat yard on the New River and shortly, thereafter, became the largest employer in Broward County, as well as the largest defense contractor in Florida. The contracts they secured for the construction of US Navy minesweepers during this time period led to the construction of large motor yachts. The Denison’s yachting business, launched in the early 1950s with the construction of the largest yacht built in the US, post WWII, the ALISA V, eventually led them to become most prolific large yacht builder in the world in 1993. The first of only two yacht builders in the US to have received this recognition.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States dedicated to promoting, protecting, and growing the 111,000 middle class jobs in Broward County and 142,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses promoting boating lifestyles from family cruising and fishing to yachts and the goods and services that sustain them, driving the economic output to $8.9 billion in Broward County and $12 billion regionally. Created in 1961, the nonprofit trade group is focused on the sound growth of the marine industry in the South Florida Region to benefit its members, their customers, communities and the environment. The Association has over 500 members in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Through the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, advocacy efforts, programs and services of MIASF have combined to raise the professionalism of the industry and awareness of its impact and contributions by the public, elected, and regulatory officials at the local, state, and federal levels. Members have fostered a reputation for the region to be known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 109th birthday with cocktails, food stations and entertainment.

Tickets for this year’s 25th anniversary History Makers fundraiser are $100 (online service charges not included) and can be purchased online at http://bit.ly/HFLHistoryMakers2020 or via email at info@flhc.org. Tickets are limited.

James’ body of work focuses primarily on painting and portraiture where his reputation of powerful figures balance between meticulous brush strokes, dynamic loose energy, and an explosion of tropical colors. These figurative pieces question the social notion of nature and beauty; thus the age-old human longing for perfection.

James’ current work draws from his parent’s proud heritage and cultural influences of the country, Haiti. Now, James’ adopt Moorish style elements from the city of Opa Locka, FL, which were drawn from mosaic tile pieces and architecture facades.

South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall presents the Latin Grammy Award-Winner and Flute Virtuoso NESTOR TORRES QUINTET, Saturday, February 15 at 8:00 PM. With his unique style, Puerto Rican flutist Nestor Torres will delight his audience on a magical night in which his unique sound will take them on a journey of Nestor’s greatest successes throughout his musical career. From mainstream jazz, R&B to Latin classics, Torres promises to present a musical kaleidoscope that makes each of his presentations variegated. Torres who is a native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, resides in both Miami and Los Angeles, and mentions that 2020 is loaded with new projects, including the release of a new classical music album, which is being produced by the Uruguayan GRAMMY-winning conductor and composer José Serebrier and Julio Bague, vice president of Peermusic. The release of a single is also approaching, where he had a special alliance with the Dominican reggaetonero Mafio, with whom Torres balances his flute skills. He will also be releasing an album of collaborations with important Latin artists in what he calls an avant-garde production.

According to Dr Ron Weber, South Florida JAZZ president and artistic director, “Nestor has retained his Caribbean roots, while exploring jazz in its many forms with intriguing fusions with other genres. While his early inspirations were Dave Brubeck, Tito Puente and Cal Tjader, his early heroes were the classical flute icons Jean Pierre Rampal and his literal ‘man with the golden flute’ successor, James Galway. Beyond them, his influences include Cuban legend Richard Egües, and jazz greats Herbie Mann and Hubert Laws.”

Bailey Hall is located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie and offers free parking. Subscriptions and individual tickets are available by visiting southfloridajazz.org, www.baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884. Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is presenting “HamacaS,” a socially engaged project by Liene Bosquê, coordinated by Ana Clara Silva, on view from February 8 through March 29, 2020. HamacaS explores the cultural dissonance and emotional displacement experienced by immigrants in the United States. The project consists of an interactive installation at the museum that will be activated through collective hammock weaving sessions and workshops. The project will offer a critical and expansive conversation around immigration with communities in Miami. As an integral part of the project, HamacaS will continue to develop and be presented throughout different locations in Miami after its inaugural run at MOCA North Miami.

HamacaS reconsiders the relational meaning of site and place for a group of people that both occupy several spaces at once and are rendered invisible in this country. The project asks us to imagine how immigrants carry place with them across borders and barriers. What purpose can a collective, shared space have for members of a community that is both villainized and erased at the same time? HamacaS is meant to act as a safe space for dialogue, debate, and understanding through engaging in making––the space between the hand and the mind that offers respite.

Liene Bosquê is a visual artist and art educator based in Miami. Bosquê’s artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States, at MoMA PS1 in New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, among other places. In 2016, she received the Emerging Artist Fellowship from the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, where she presented her first public sculpture. Recently, Bosquê was an artist in residence at Queens Museum’s ArtBuilt residency in New York, where she started the socially engaged project, HamacaS. Her work has been included in international exhibitions in Brazil, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, and South Korea; at places such as Museu de Historia Natural in Lisbon, Museu de Arte de Ribeirão Preto, and Sesc in São Paulo.

HamacaS is funded by The Ellies, Miami’s visual arts awards, presented by Oolite Arts as well as the WaveMaker Grants program presented by Locust Projects, and is supported by The55project.

The project will maintain public hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The artist will be onsite on 2/8, 2/9, 2/15, 2/16, 2/29, 3/1, 3/7, 3/8, 3/21, 3/22, 3/28 and 3/29 and welcomes the public to come participate.

On Wednesday, March 11, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., there will be a screening of 16mm film and digital video on the subject of weaving and culture surrounding this age-old craft. Screening to be followed by HamacaS artist Liene Bosquê and project coordinator Ana Clara Silva in conversation. The event is free and open to the public.

Guests are invited to a closing reception on Sunday, March 29 from 12:00-3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor the contributions and creativity of our African American community during its annual Black History Month celebration. This year’s events will include the global launch/book signing of “From My Jamaican Gully to the World,” a memoir, by writer and environmentalist Audrey Wright Peterman on Tuesday, February 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Living on their sailboat at Cooley’s Marina just west of History Fort Lauderdale, Audrey Peterman and her husband Frank wrote and spoke prolifically for seven years about the environmental challenges and opportunities facing South Florida and the nation. The Petermans have been advocates for the protection of America’s National Parks and publicly-owned lands for more than two decades. They have successfully challenged land managers and successive administrations to do more to include Americans of color as visitors, employees and supporters. In “From My Jamaican Gully to the World,” Peterman writes about the formative influences in the Jamaican countryside that gave her the confidence to continue to work to make change in the environmental sector. Going back to her roots, Peterman delves into “old time” Jamaica in a way that will delight audiences that remember those day and intrigue those for whom they are new. The book is a memoir, a history of the environmental movement from the perspective of a Black leader, and a guide to positively influence our response to the climate crisis. Peterman’s efforts have been recognized with various awards including Environmental Hero Award 2000 from Vice President Al Gore and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Outstanding Citizen Advocate Award from the National Parks Conservation Association, (1998) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Outdoor Afro, (2017.)

Additionally, History Fort Lauderdale will host a Dillard Center for the Arts’ Advanced Placement (AP) student exhibition and sale. Visitors of all ages are also encouraged to view the new “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” permanent exhibit which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting Caribbean, Latinx and women artists sharing their views of history.

The book signing is free. Entry to the show and sale is included with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is always free for members, military and children ages six and under.

The focus of this project is to transform SW 5th Street between SW 3rd Ave and 4th Ave in Little Havana into a fully accessible public space for all community members. The street currently separates Jose Marti Park into two isolated sections but can quickly become a space where community members can gather, community events will occur, and people feel safer and more attracted to the park overall.

Working with Little Havana residents, we are bringing a series of activities and events — all inspired by local community members — to SW 5th Street. The goal is to close the street for pedestrian and community use, as an extension of the Jose Marti Park area.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Kicks-off Awareness Raising Campaign in Palm Beach

Royal Park Bridge Lights Up Yellow for the Race of Hope
Shining Light on The Importance of Mental Health in 2020

February 4 – 15, 2020

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the country’s leading non-profit organization dedicated solely to fighting depression through research and education. Now in its 14th year, HDRF launched the Race of Hope in Palm Beach in 2019, expanding the event from Southampton, NY, where the Race first started in 2016. Last year the Race of Hope in Palm Beach raised over $300,000 for life-saving research.

Just after the bridge lighting and in the run-up to the Race, The Royal Poinciana Plaza will kick off the Week of Hope on Wednesday, February 5. Many storefronts at The Royal Poinciana Plaza will place a two-foot-wide, environmentally friendly and re-usable, yellow statement balloon at their front doors and hand out informational flyers about depression.

Over in the Worth Avenue shopping district, other stores along Via Bice will also display balloons and support HDRF’s mission with a percentage of sales during a Day of Hope on Wednesday, February 12.
“The bridge and the bright balloons represent a commitment to change the staggering statistics around depression,” said Audrey Gruss.

“The Royal Poinciana Plaza is thrilled to participate in this event for the second year in a row,” added Alexandra Patterson, Senior Director of Development and Interim General Manager of The Royal Poinciana Plaza. “The HOPE yellow balloons make a visual impact that will spark thousands of life-saving conversations and we are grateful to have the opportunity to support such an important cause.”

Here is a recap of the events launching the Race of Hope in Palm Beach:

· Tuesday, February 4: Bridge Lighting at sunset in HDRF signature sunshine yellow
· Wednesday, February 5: Week of Hope kicks off at The Royal Poinciana Plaza with visually-arresting HOPE balloons (environmentally friendly and re-usable).
· Wednesday, February 12, from 10am to 8pm, Worth Avenue’s Via Bice will host a shop and sip Day of Hope with music and refreshments and all stores donating a percentage of sales back to Hope for Depression Research Foundation. The day caps off with cocktails at Bice restaurant (313 Worth Ave, Palm Beach, FL 33480) starting at 5 pm.
· Thursday, February 13, Audrey Gruss and Frances Valentine are hosting an invitation-only luncheon at the Frances Valentine flagship store on Worth Avenue’s Via Bice.
· Saturday, February 15, the final day of the Week of Hope, Audrey Gruss and Palm Beach resident and HDRF Board member Scott Snyder, Race Grand Marshals, will lead the Second Annual Palm Beach 5K Race of Hope along the North trail and through the scenic streets of Palm Beach at 8am. Participants have registered from all over South Florida to unite as a community and raise awareness and funds to defeat depression. All participants will receive a finisher hat, short sleeve tech shirt, lightweight jacket and a finisher medal. 100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. Supporters who cannot travel to the race are encouraged to have their own “virtual race” in their hometown for $29. To sign up or learn more, please visit raceofhopeseries.org.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

· HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
· Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
· The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
· In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.
· HDRF has invested over 30 million dollars in advanced depression research to date.
