The Experimental City is a documentary about the Minnesota Experimental City project, a futuristic attempt to solve urban problems by creating a full-size city from scratch in the isolated woods of northern Minnesota. At the heart of the story is renowned scientist, inventor, and comic-strip author, Athelstan Spilhaus, who dreams of a new kind of planned city—a truly experimental city that continuously changes to find workable urban solutions. This new city would employ the newest technologies in communications, transport, pollution control, energy supply—even large-scale domed enclosure—in an attempt to create more livable cities for the twenty-first century. It was a compelling vision, with powerful backers, hundreds of experts, and its own state agency. But not everyone fell in line with this newfangled vision for the future.

Fountainhead Presents Artists Open 5/11/19

Fountainhead Presents Artists Open
Saturday, 05/11/2019 – 11:00 am – 06:00 pm
Various Locations Throughout Miami
7338 NW Miami Ct,
Miami, Florida 33150
Website
Cost: Free

Fountainhead announces the inaugural edition of Artists Open, the first ever Miami-Dade County-wide open studios day. Initiated by Fountainhead and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, 16 artists complexes and over 225 artists will open their studios to the public May 11, 2019 from 11am to 6pm.

With the support of Knight Foundation, The Fountainhead will host a countywide open studio event in Miami-Dade county, the first of its kind. The Fountainhead is on a mission to unite artists and raise awareness of the vast, incredible talent right here in our own backyard.

On Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 11am to 6pm, 16 art studio complexes and studio communities, and artist’s studios within close proximity, will open their doors to the public. Over 225 artists are participating. The Fountainhead has been thorough in connecting with as many art studio complexes as possible for the big event. To keep navigation easy, we have focused on complexes and clusters of artist’s communities and studios. Complexes and communities, listed north to south, include; Bridge Red Art Complex, 8365 Studios, Fountainhead Studios, Visual Art Group, the Milk District, The Collective 62, Laundromat Art Space, ArtHood 56, Bakehouse Art Complex, 27/20 Studios, Oolite Arts (Miami Beach), Mana Contemporary 777, Void Projects, 4700 @ Bird Road Arts District and Deering Estate. Dimensions Variable is hosting their grand opening that night and will be open from 6 to 10pm ONLY.

Kathryn Mikesell, Co-founder and Executive Director of Fountainhead believes, “intimate access to artists and art opens people’s minds to the value of diversity and fosters dialogue, creating a more tolerant, engaged and inspired world. To have a voice, artists need a sustainable career. To be heard and to affect change, artists need a broad audience.”

Because many of the studios are not generally open to the public, information regarding ADA accessibility, parking and nearby public transportation is being provided for each location via the website.

As a green initiative we will not be distributing printed information or flyers. We will be providing a comprehensive map via the website, www.artistsopen.miami linking all complexes and artists and well as utilizing social media and communication platforms.

Many artists will have works available for sale in their studios.

For press inquiries, contact Kathryn Mikesell, Foundress and Executive Director at kathryn@fountainheadresidency.com.

ABOUT THE FOUNTAINHEAD

The Fountainhead, founded in 2008, serves as a catalyst for growth and sustainability in the professional careers of artists, provides Miami art professionals and enthusiasts access to emerging talent from around the world, cultivates new audiences for the arts and collaborates with institutions and businesses supporting the growth of Miami’s art and cultural community building a global family that transcends all borders and continues to give back.

Fountainhead believes that intimate access to artists and art opens people’s minds to the value of diversity and fosters dialogue, creating a more tolerant, engaged and inspired world. To have a voice, artists need a sustainable career. To be heard and to affect change, artists need a broad audience.

The Fountainhead Studios, located in Little Haiti provides Miami-based artists working in all mediums with affordable and flexible raw studio space outside of the public eye. More than just studio space, we provide a community for a profession that is often solitary. Currently, there are more than 20 artists working there.

The Fountainhead Residency is an international artists’ residency in Miami, FL that empowers artists to build a sustainable career and cultivates new audiences for the arts. Each month, Fountainhead hosts 3-4 artists, operating year-round between 30-40 artists. To date over 370 artists from 43 countries have taken part in the residency.

Fountainhead wants to thank all their generous donors. Without their continued support this would not be possible. Knight Foundation, Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, Lisa Schejola Akin & Jeffrey Akin, Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz, de Groot Foundation, Hillsdale Fund, IGT Media Holdings/Primecard, Adriana & Ricardo Malfitano, Mignon Marshall & Ryan Mahoney, CCH Pounder, Joan Quinlivan, Debi & Jeff Wechsler, Lois Whitman-Hess & Eliot Hess, Alexa & Adam Wolman

Reggae beats are taking over Wynwood on April 27 as three distinguished Latin American bands capture the audience at Mana Wynwood. Cultura Profética and Rawayana bring a new flavor to their now annual concert in Miami by adding Los Cafres to the line-up this year. SWARM, fastest-growing, premier event agency will be producing the concert for the second year in a row. Reggae fans will witness a historical evening as the top three bands perform for the first time together in Miami! Paco Lopez President of No Limit Entertainment, known for his work with Marc Anthony, Pitbull, Wisin & Yandel, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Jennifer Lopez, Maluma, Mana, Laura Pausini, Residente, and many more, brought together the bands together to present one of the most iconic concerts in Wynwood!

Cultura Profética, originally from Puerto Rico and the headliners of the night, have reached over 2 million Spotify streams a month and is one of the few Latin American bands to record a “Spotify Single” independently. Throughout their remarkable career and strong reputation Cultura has gained worldwide recognition, they believe in using music as a form of activism in the community. In their 23-year trajectory, the versatile band uses music to express socio-political issues, the beauty of life, love, freedom, equality, and nature through harmonic touches of jazz, funk, and electronic, hip-hop, bossa nova, and the indisputable Afro-Caribbean rhythms. After the success of their single “Llevarte Allí” they announced the “Qualia” Tour launched in Argentina which was at the beginning of this year, they sure entertained over 20k fans per concert. They are currently recording a new album which is expected to be released in October.

Los Cafres, from Argentina, were the pioneers of reggae music in the ’80s. In the early ’90s, the band toured the basement bars and pubs of Buenos Aires with their first single “Frecuencia Cafre”. Their jump to popularity began with their album Quién da más? which held the hit single “Si el amor se cae.” With the release of this album, Los Cafres was recognized internationally as one of the current industry influencers on the Argentinian reggae scene.

The last of the three bands to be formed was Rawayana in 2007. They made a name for themselves in 2010 when participating in Venezuela’s “Festival Nuevas Bandas”, capturing the hearts of spectators with their eclectic rock/reggae beats. They subsequently released their first album “Licencia para ser libre” in 2011. In 2016, they released their most recent and third album called “Trippy Caribbean”. Their song “High” featuring Apache known throughout America and currently has 38 million reproductions on YouTube. Trippy Caribbean allowed them to be recognized internationally and toured through North America, Europe, and South America.

“ We take pride in always bringing top tier talent and concerts like this to fruition in our city” Said Javi Zayas, President of SWARM “Being a company owned by Hispanics and partnering up with powerhouses like No Limit Entertainment and Cosa Buena, Inc., allows us to give back to our roots all while breaking boundaries in the industry!“

Dance NOW MiamiMakes Broward Center Debut 5/17/19

Dance NOW MiamiMakes Broward Center Debut
Friday, 05/17/2019 – 08:08 pm – 11:07 pm
Broward Center for the Performing Arts
201 SW 5th Ave,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312
Buy Tickets
Cost: 35

Friday, May 17 at 8: Dance NOW! Miami comes to the Broward Center with four works: Bridges NOT Walls, The Shifting Weight of Water, (B)Orgia: Decadence and Decay, and Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre.

Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When one of South Florida’s leading dance companies, Dance NOW! Miami, performs for the first time at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater, both meanings of the word will be invoked. Taking as its jumping off point the recent political struggles and turmoil that have divided America, Bridges NOT Walls, choreographed by Dance NOW! Artistic Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten, is an investigation of the human condition. “Differences among people cause us to fear one another, separating us, instead of allowing us to find common ground,” says Baumgarten. Inspired by the Barack Obama quote – “We must guard against a tribalism that is built on us against them” – the work explores ways to overcome these natural instincts and to find compassion for one another in a diverse society.

The evening also features three other signature works from Dance NOW!, including the world premiere of Salterini’s The Shifting Weight of Water, a poetic ensemble work for six members of the company, built around the music of South African composer Phillip Miller. Two Broward premieres round out the program: Baumgarten and Salterini’s jointly created (B)ORGIA: Decadence & Decay was inspired by the real life story of the famous Italian Renaissance-era family, and Baumgarten’s Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre a collaboration with composer Federico Bonacossa.

WHEN: Friday, May 17 at 8:00 pm
WHERE: Broward Centter Amaturo Theater, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale

About Taylor:

Taylor Cavazos is a Mexican American artist born along the southernmost border of the United States in Harlingen, Texas. She is most known for her colorful, detailed, and symbolic Mexican-American paintings. After moving to Miami in early 2018, Taylor produced her collection of acrylic-on-canvas art pieces, focused on Mexico’s representation of the calavera (skull), Dia de Los Muertos and “Fridamania,” referring to the growing celebrity status of famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

Taylor Cavazos Art also has a larger purpose. Living with anxiety, Taylor finds solace in painting repetitive “dots and swirl” patterns on her canvas. “It helps me clear my mind,” she explains.

“Sometimes, hours pass without me noticing. I block out all unnecessary thoughts and truly relax when I’m painting these patterns.” Taylor hopes her unique take on Latinx art will serve as a platform to discuss the prevalence of mental health issues among Latinx and Hispanic American populations.

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for “Best Play,” all elements come invigoratingly together like clockwork in John Patrick Shanley’s provocative play Doubt, A Parable, a gripping story of suspicion cast on a priest’s behavior that is less about scandal than about fascinatingly nuanced questions of moral certainty. Doubt, A Parable is blunt yet subtle, manipulative but full of empathy for all sides, and a powerful drama that represents the eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences.

Since then, the show has been a great success and has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents.

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by
quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience in a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

The cast of Corteo includes 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from all around the world.

The Fates…
Centuries ago, by chance – or perhaps, by “fate” – four long-lost soul-sisters were serendipitously brought together.

It wasn’t long before they discovered that they all shared a unified vision, finding themselfs identified with the empowering force of the Greek goddesses of destiny – The Fates.

In ancient Greece, these mythical goddess sisters were believed to spin, measure, and cut the threads of human fate.

With their cosmic spindle, they twist the fibers of our existence, spinning our dreams into reality. Though unlike the sisters of Greek mythology, the thread has no end – allowing for an infinite string of possibilities that may weave the beautiful, complex tapestry of our lives.

The Fates Collective are a nee twist in our generation, creating a new future; one built on love, support, and infinite creative freedom so the possibilities that anything can happen are infinite.

Through this concept and exceptional sound, their principal mission is to open our hearts to the universe, working with the unexplained magic that‘s part of their identity, aligning stars and creating an infinite string of “meant-to-be” moments.

There is no greater vessel for this than the connective power of music – and of course, the unbreakable force of love and unity. As the modern-day Fates, they are the sisters of destiny. The purveyors of possibility. Guardians of cosmic coincidence.

Don’t miss out this magnetic force.

CREAM DORAL
9715 NW 41 Street,
Doral, Florida 33178

With various locations on the map, including stores in Boca Raton, Pembroke Pines and Weston, CREAM will now add Doral to its locator map. The festivities will include FREE Handcrafted & Warm Ice Cream Sandwiches from Opening until 7PM and a ribbon cutting ceremony including Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and Doral Council, Bravo TV’s Richie Skye, renowned artist Carlos A. Doral is one of thirty-four municipalities in Miami Dade county, and is located just one mile from Miami International Airport. An area that has become known for commerce, tourists, and families only makes sense for a brand like CREAM. The “fan-favorite” plans to share the deliciousness (ice cream sandwiches) with the local Doral community.

CREAM, which stands for ‘Cookies Rule Everything Around Me’, serves handcrafted and warm ice cream sandwiches, as well as other delicious creations including scoops, sundaes, tacos, milkshakes, floats and more using super-premium, proprietary flavored ice cream and cookies. Founded in 2010, the brand goal since the first store opened, was to provide families and ice cream enthusiasts with a tasty, one-of-a-kind ice cream sandwich. After all, who doesn’t love fresh baked cookies paired with thick and creamy ice cream? This is one of the main brand pillars. Freshness all the way.

Although CREAM started with cookie ice cream sandwiches, the brand evolved, to satisfy fans and a wide audience of discerning palates. The development of ice cream sandwiches using brownies, do’sants, and fresh off the griddle waffles came to be, served in different variations and flavors enjoyed today in all the menu items from “scoop to shake”! For those wanting to take the CREAM experience to the home, office or special event, CREAM also offers catering.

This April 27th, CREAM fans can stop by, and enjoy a signature warm ice cream sandwich (on the house) from 12:00 Noon until 7:00PM, in a fun and relaxing atmosphere, right in the heart of Doral. Following that, from 7:30PM onward, guests can purchase for the full CREAM menu.

The CREAM Doral grand opening will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 12:00 NOON- 12:00 MIDNIGHT at 9715 NW 41 Street, Doral, Florida 33178. *Media and Bloggers can enjoy an all-day invite on Thursday April 25, 2019 to come in at their leisure for a complimentary CREAM item. TURKUAZ 4/27/19

TURKUAZ
Saturday, 04/27/2019 – 07:00 pm – 11:00 pm
North Beach Bandshell
7275 Collins Ave,
Miami Beach, Florida 33141
Buy Tickets
Cost: 22.00

Turkuaz at the North Beach Bandshell is presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with GMP Live and the Rhythm Foundation.

Opening set by Afrobeta.

Energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances.

The Brooklyn-based nonet —Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping sing-alongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

The album, which includes co-production work from Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, sees the band stretch their sonic palette and cover new ground lyrically as they grapple with reality and get personal, finding the light in what can sometimes be a dark world. Yet even in the midst of serious subject matter creeping in on this album, the musicianship of all nine band members and the group’s upbeat, fun-loving sensibility still shines through to give Turkuaz fans the joyous sound they’ve come to know over the last several years.

Your ticket comes with a free subscription to The New Tropic, Miami’s essential newsletter.

Red Bull partnered with American Social Bar and Kitchen to give 28 students an opportunity to participate in a landmark initiative that will showcase their world-class design insight at one of Miami’s most popular establishments. The students are part of the University’s renowned FIU: By Design and the Department of Interior Architecture program.

REVAMP, powered by Red Bull, gave the interior designers-in-training the chance to use their imaginations in redesigning the bar at American Social Bar and Kitchen’s location in Brickell. The seven teams, comprised of four students each, worked on a three-week Design Charette.

Throughout the three weeks, each team developed their ideas into a series of design proposals that were presented at different stages of the Design Charette. The final goal of the Charette was to reimagine the bar, with a chance to have it build out at the Brickell establishment.

“This is the first time our students have participated in a project for an actual client so early in their studies,” said Katie Rothfield, Senior Instructor, FIU Interior Architecture Department. “It is an incredible opportunity for the students to merge design theory with its practical application, and there is nothing more exciting than seeing your designs come to life. We are eager to see our students’ design proposals, and we look forward to the unique experience of working with Red Bull and American Social.”

REVAMP kicked off at the beginning of the Fall semester with an on campus meeting on August 23, 2018, throughout the project, students gained first-hand knowledge and experience in every step of the design process, from initial client meetings to the development of detailed drawings, equipment specifications, to the presentation of their final design proposals. American Social leadership briefed students on their initial vision, general project parameters and guidelines for a successful implementation.

The winners who were announced on September 6, 2018 were Maria Leon, Carolina Cardona, Mirtes Araujo, and Melissa Briceno. The buildout of the REVAMP powered by Red Bull project came to completion April, 2019.

American Social Bar and Kitchen is ready and eager to host the unveiling celebration showcasing the new bar, April 19, 2019 from 5 PM – 8 PM at 690 SW 1st CT Miami, FL 33130. The unveiling also marks the first look for the winners of the REVAMP project. Guest must RSVP for the event by visiting: redbull_revamp_project.eventbrite.com

“American Social is very excited to partner with Red Bull and FIU,” said Paul Greenberg, Managing Partner. “This project is a combination of teamwork, collaboration, and fun”. American Social is thankful for the opportunity, and we are thrilled with the new bar!”

Elected Officials and Business Leaders Unveil Anti-Fracking Art Installation

Elected officials, Hialeah business leaders, and local artists will present an art installation at the Leah Arts District to demonstrate the threats of oil fracking

Hialeah, FL — On Thursday, April 18th, local South Florida elected officials, business owners, artists, and residents will gather at the iconic 20ft flamingo mural in the Leah Arts District to unveil a new art installation to demonstrate the threats of oil and gas development near the Hialeah aquifer. Concerned residents will also present sweeping support for banning fracking among local elected officials and business owners in Hialeah and Miami Lakes. A recent court approval to drill for oil in the Everglades sparked outrage over the prospect of drilling and fracking in the Everglades a few miles from Miami’s drinking water sources, leading to this public demonstration.

House Speaker José R. Oliva recently stated that he would vote in support of banning fracking. Residents will discuss the legislation to ban fracking that has been filed in the State Legislature. House Bill 7029 to ban fracking has passed multiple House Committees. Speakers will discuss the loophole present in the bill that would allow fracking using matrix acidizing.

By the age of 30, the average woman is charged $40,000 because of the Pink Tax. European Wax Center is joining forces with the community of Miami in generating awareness to #AxElPinkTax throughout the month of April. The Pink Tax is the extra $1,351 that the average woman is charged every year for everyday products and services… just because it is for women!

With their efforts to bring these extra costs to light, Miami based artist Claudia La Bianca created a mural in Wynwood showcasing a set of pink and blue wings, with a price disparity, highlighting the price differences in men’s and women’s products to create must-share moments for the community. To put their money where their mouth is, European Wax Center will be paying the female artist $1,351 more than quoted, paying back an average year’s worth of The Pink Tax.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

Join in! Our community will be stronger when we all commit to focusing on what unites us instead of what divides us. A full calendar of events is available at http://bit.ly/ConnectionEvents2019.

The Brooklyn-based nonet ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping singalongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

“Turkuaz is made up of individuals, each their own shade of the color spectrum,” explains Dave. “Each person brings a signature style and embodies his or her own color. The respective auras come together to create our sound. The name itself implies that vibrancy, but it’s a different spin on turquoise. In the same way, we put a different spin on groove-oriented music by telling stories that you wouldn’t normally associate with funk.”

NAMI Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival 5/19/19

NAMI Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival

Donna Shalala Center
1330 Miller Dr.,
Miami, Florida 33146
Website
Cost: $10

NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.
