For more than thirty years, Miami-based artist Karen Rifas has amassed a body of work that endeavors to understand and re-imagine space. Well known for her minimal cord and leaf installations, and precise, methodical line drawings, in 2016, Rifas began a focused exploration into the constructive possibilities of color. Employing densely hued shapes and irregular lines, Rifas creates spaces that oscillate between the two- and three-dimensional. Deceptive Constructions surveys this recent body of work for the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in over 10 years. Through variegated floor and sculptural installations, works on paper, and wood panel, Rifas uses a concise language of richly contrasted color to alter our perception of space.

Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly”  5/24/18

Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly”

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will present the group exhibition “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly” from May 24 – Aug. 5, 2018. Curated by Risa Puleo, the exhibition features the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas separated into conceptual categories including indigenous, immigrant and assimilated.

The exhibition focuses on the monarch, the only butterfly that migrates in two directions, as a geographic range and a metaphor. Monarchs (specifically those of eastern North American) fly from southern Canada through the Midwest on their way to Michoacán, Mexico and back.

This survey of artists from or living in the path of the monarch, brings to life the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call to build a wall in Mexico as unrelenting issues that create challenges for people native to the Americas — being separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated.

Like the butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely navigate its way through middle America with inherited knowledge, these artists also use inherited cultural memory to showcase and explore historical narratives of their respective heritage through abstract techniques.

Artists incorporate processes such as basket weaving, beadwork, copper hammering, and quilting, and materials such as stucco, plaster, ceramics, and feathers, that hold a high degree of resonance within native, immigrant, and brown aesthetics and vernacular cultures. The exhibition also charts the movement of styles and approaches through large spans of time across the Americas, speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form.

William Cordova, a nationally respected Miami-based artist, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. Other artists include Gina Adams, Carmen Argote, Natalie Ball, Margarita Cabrera, Juan William Chávez, Rafa Esparza, Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez, Guillermo Galindo, Jeffrey Gibson, Sky Hopinka, Donna Huanca, Truman Lowe, Ivan LOZANO, Cannupa Hanska Luger and Marty Two Bulls, Jr, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Nicholas Galanin and Merritt Johnson, Rodolfo Marron III, Harold Mendez, Mark Menjivar, Ronny Quevedo, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez, Josh Rios andAnthony Romero, Guadalupe Rosales, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Francisco Souto, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Mary Valverde, Dyani White Hawk, Nathan Young, and Sarah Zapata.

Admission to MOCA is $5, free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place on Thursday, June 14, 2018 with an admission cost of $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

Menu highlights include the Culinary Influenced Bacon & Eggs featuring bacon-infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon, egg white, fresh lemon, honey and black pepper. New Classics include Dark n’ Stormy – a Bermuda classic, made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum instead of the traditional Gosling’s Rum. The latest addition to L Bar’s Not So Classic offerings is the Hibiscus Punch made with Flor de Caña Rum, fresh lemon, hibiscus syrup, pineapple and raspberries.

For those looking for a refreshing spirit-free drink, creative offerings remain on the menu including the Blood Orange Cooler with blood orange, lime, agave, soda water, and mint; Grape Rosemary Smash with green grapes, honey, simple syrup-infused rosemary, lime and soda water, topped with rosemary sprigs; and Watermelon Cilantro Fresca with watermelon chunks, cilantro, lime, agave, simple syrup, soda water and a pinch of salt.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Presents Verano y Humo, an original Flamenco Ballet inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke 6/10/18

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Presents Verano y Humo, an original Flamenco Ballet inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke
Sunday, 06/10/2018 – 03:00 pm – 05:00 pm
Colony Theatre
1040 Lincoln Rd,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
Website
Cost: In advance: VIP $35, General Admission $25; Students & Seniors $20. Prices increase at the door.

The original and groundbreaking Flamenco work, Verano y Humo, by Ballet Flamenco La Rosa’s Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, is an international collaboration with stellar guest artists from Spain. Inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, this is a not to be missed experience, as a great American play is interpreted in the language of Flamenco. With two vivid main characters that are polar opposites, the stage is set for drama. The principal themes of intense love and desire along with resulting loneliness and despair, make this work a challenge yet a perfect fit for Flamenco’s compelling arsenal of physical and emotional expression. There is ample opportunity for Flamenco’s passion and force as well as the nuance and delicacy that it embodies at the same time. In the masterful hands of the dancers, musicians, choreographers and director that will collaborate to create Verano y Humo, Tennessee Williams’ master work finds a new and compelling interpretation.

Both exhibits will be on display from Saturday, June 2, 2018 through Saturday, August 25, 2018.

Francie Bishop Good: “Comus”Good and her mother graduated from the same high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After reflecting on photographs in her mother’s “Comus” yearbook, comparing them to those is her yearbook, she used her interpretations as a limitless source of material for this series. Good cross-pollinates painting, photography, drawing and collage with digital layering to create portraits in a series that is a staccato of media and a hybrid form of portraiture. In “Comus,” Good transforms high school yearbook pictures to a new reality.

Dana Donaty: “Profoundly Playful – A Survey of Work”Widely recognized for her provocative canvases with unusual narrative, Donaty’s unmistakable satirical lexicon is a perfect collision of reality and fantasy, psychological flirtation and a super-charged palette that is like a party about to get thoroughly out of control.

Forever Broward: “ForEver Glades – en plein air”The Coral Springs Museum of Art, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, takes a look at life west of Interstate 95 with a delightful collection of paintings created en plein air (painted outdoors) on the edge of the Everglades at Markham Park. The “west meets east” program continues throughout the season with lectures and art in public places.

North Beach Bandshell

Miami Beach, Florida 33141

Cost: $20 advance / $25 day of concert / $35 Axis of Love series pass

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Emergency medicine is currently the prime focus of research in medicinal research. Emergency medicine is also called an accident and emergency medicine. Emergency medicine is the medical specialty treatment for undifferentiated, unscheduled patients with injuries or illnesses requiring immediate medical attention in the acute phase. Emergency medicine is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills to diagnose disease and injury affecting patients of all age groups in an acute phase. In most of the modern emergency departments, a large number of patients are treated by emergency physicians and decide according to their conditions either admitting them to the hospital or releasing them after treatment as necessary. This has a wide scope with no boundaries of organ, system or disease pattern. Emergency medicine shares with family medicine the uniqueness of seeing all patients regardless of age, gender or any specifications. The main goal of Emergency Medicine 2018 to share knowledge and getting ideas from expertise that can help us to provide a healthy life for everyone and to fight with emergency situations.

Our neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by Corinna Moebius, a local resident and co-author of the book, “A History of Little Havana.” She’s been leading tours of Little Havana since 2006, when she served as director of the monthly Viernes Culturales festival, and is currently a PhD Candidate in cultural anthropology at FIU, where her research focuses on racial politics of the community’s memorial landscape. This walking tour is not an ordinary experience of Little Havana. There will be highlights of the popular “arts district” or “heritage district” on Calle Ocho, but you’ll learn how to “see” the district as a stage. How does it function as a stage? What stories are told here, and why? Where and what are the silences? Attendees are encouraged to think critically about the role of “heritage districts” and “heritage tourism” in reproducing myths about race/ethnicity and racial/ethnic difference. Stops along the way include: Cuban Memorial Park, murals, Domino and Azucar Plazas, and some sites outside the tourist district as well. Accessibility: #MiamiWalks seeks to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs. This walking tour in particular, will be kid-friendly and dog-friendly.
Contact: For questions or in need of additional accommodations, please send an email to celebratediversitymiami@gmail.com at least 24-hours in advance of the event.
