Our neighborhood exploration of Little Havana will be led by Corinna Moebius, a local resident and co-author of the book, “A History of Little Havana.” She’s been leading tours of Little Havana since 2006, when she served as director of the monthly Viernes Culturales festival, and is currently a PhD Candidate in cultural anthropology at FIU, where her research focuses on racial politics of the community’s memorial landscape. This walking tour is not an ordinary experience of Little Havana. There will be highlights of the popular “arts district” or “heritage district” on Calle Ocho, but you’ll learn how to “see” the district as a stage. How does it function as a stage? What stories are told here, and why? Where and what are the silences? Attendees are encouraged to think critically about the role of “heritage districts” and “heritage tourism” in reproducing myths about race/ethnicity and racial/ethnic difference. Stops along the way include: Cuban Memorial Park, murals, Domino and Azucar Plazas, and some sites outside the tourist district as well. Accessibility: #MiamiWalks seeks to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs. This walking tour in particular, will be kid-friendly and dog-friendly.

Miami, Florida 33131

Cost: $65, $48, $35

Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, closes its 2017-18 season with a gala event: Layali al-Andalus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Olympia Theater, featuring the National Arab Orchestra and special guests.

The Ojalá/ Inshallah season was named for the Spanish word for “I wish” and the Arabic phrase for “God willing” as a reminder of the Moorish impact on the Spanish language and Hispanic identity shared by so many greater Miami residents. This final performance, Layali al-Andalus, or “Andalusian Nights,” embodies the Arab-Hispanic connection, conjuring the oft romanticized historical place and time of cultural co-existence and exchange in an enchanting evening of Arab Classical music, flamenco and more.
Dedicated to performing and preserving the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music, the 24-member National Arab Orchestra features violins and cellos alongside traditional instruments such as oud, qanun (zither), nay (reed flute) and a percussion section including riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble will be joined by esteemed Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez, and Flamenco singer Alejandro El Gambimbas (direct from Spain!); Arabic singers Marian Layousse, Abdallah Moussa, and Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

A pre-concert reception will celebrate the season, offering complimentary Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for all concert goers.

April 29 from 1-4 PM: The Lincoln Road B.I.D. presents “Live #onLincoln,” a FREE concert featuring vocalist Stephanie Michaels. The performance will be at the Euclid Circle stage, Lincoln Rd and Euclid Ave, Miami Beach. Of Puerto Rican and Jamaican descent, Stephaine Michaels weaves her multicultural background into her talents as an entertainer. Her scope covers vintage rhythm and blues, classic rock, contemporary pop, rap and hip-hop. After joining The Fusion Band she began to perform at various places throughout South Florida. Performances at The Fling Lounge at the Isles Casino, Mardi Gras Casino, The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Seminole Classic Casino and Gulfstream Casino increased the entertainer’s loyal fan base. After working with the band for three and a half years, Michaels was offered an opportunity to work with legendary musicians as the lead vocalist in B.B. King’s Allstar Band. Currently, she can be seen performing at B.B. King’s Blues Club in West Palm Beach. Michaels is a career-minded, soulful talent who connects with her fans as if they were old friends, with an honest smile. Gaining strength from her challenges, Michaels believes, “limitations only exist in the minds of those who refuse to overcome them.” As her fresh tattoo reads, “Destined for Greatness.” Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

Last call for Kill the Keg!!

On Saint Patrick’s Day 2008 the Miami bar scene was forever changed when The Irish Times Pub & Eatery opened its doors for the first time, and for the last 10 years it’s been an honor to feed your bad decisions, alcohol addiction, and late night cravings for bangers and mash and corned beef sliders.

However, after many, many frustrating months of negotiations with our landlord over the rent, and being on a month to month tenancy due to not being able to reach a compromise, we had to make the terribly difficult, emotional decision to close the doors for good.

BUT!! In true Irish Times’s spirit, we’re going out with a BANG and so we invite you out on our last weekend to come in to say goodbye, write all the shitty Yelp reviews you want, Instagram all the wonderful quotes on the walls, and TIP YOUR BARTENDER!!!!

Peace out!

Dance Now! Miami presents “The Book of Psalms,” which will have its World Premiere at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, April 21, at 8:30 pm, as part of their evening of work called Contemporanea 2018. Tickets for the Saturday, April 21 Contemporanea 2018 evening are $35 general admission, and $15 students (at the box office in-person only). Regular price tickets can be purchased in advance online at tinyurl.com/Contemporanea2018 and by phone at (877) 311-7469, or in person at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center box office, 3385 NE 188th Street, in Aventura. For group sales of ten or more, and for more information, visit www.dancenowmiami.org or contact DanceNOW! at (305) 975-8489 or info@dancenowmiami.org.

The Bible is filled with some of the world’s most beautiful lyrical poetry. Dance NOW! Miami has daringly created a new work inspired by probably the best Old Testament example of this in their “The Book of Psalms.” The company, South Florida’s leading proponent of contemporary dance, brings its emblematic graceful athleticism and syncretic of-the-moment style to this very special event. The performance, choreographed by company Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, is a contemporary dance journey through the hopes, joys, loyalties, sorrows, doubts and aspirations of the human heart. The piece will feature an original score from Milwaukee Conservatory of Music percussionist DeLane Doyle, costumes from Renato Armijo of Chernaya Bridal House, a breathtaking set from Elizabeth Camargo, and lighting from Technical Director Bruce F. Brown.

Also on the program are the Miami Premiere of “Touch Me,” the duet “XY The Engine of Life,” and the World Premiere of “Here On Earth.” “Touch Me” is a reconstruction of the choreographer Gerald Arpino’s moving solo, danced to a crackling gospel score, originally created for the Joffrey Ballet in 1977. This is part of Dance NOW!’s ongoing “Masterpiece in Motion” series that brings historically important modern dance works back to life on South Florida stages. “XY The Engine of Life,” choreographed by Salterini, is a striking duet with a man and a woman who are at once spiraling DNA strands and flesh and blood people, with a return performance from Cuban dancer Isvel Bello, and scored to striking music from Miami-based Federico Bonacossa. “Here On Earth,” with choreography by Baumgarten, brings the whole company on stage for a playful exploration of our responsibility to one another, with music from Alexandre Desplat, the Books and Gil Scott-Heron.

Says Salterini, “We love the way our work this season is literally bridging divides, from the secular to the religious, and across cultures, while continuing to push our company to new heights of artistic excellence.”

The Koubek Center

Miami, Florida 33135

The “Voice of Venezuela” brings her powerhouse vocals, spirit-shaking percussion and pointed lyrics to Little Havana as Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center presents Little Havana Social Club: Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 21.

Machado hails from a small village near Venezuela’s coast called El Clavo, where most of its 1,500 inhabitants are descendants of slaves who worked on the region’s cacao plantations. For generations, they’ve preserved aspects of African tradition and developed a uniquely Afro-Venezuelan heritage–particularly in their music, which includes intricate African polyrhythms and percussion, call-and-response singing and close harmonies.

Her band–which includes three cocoa farming brothers, a mother and son team and Machado’s sister–has played together for nearly three decades. They are masters of parranda, a style of community music born in joyous celebrations where musicians strolled through town, commenting on daily life (parranda is also a term for “party”). The music they create preserves the tambor genre, said to make dancers float.

“When Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo begin to sing, their layered harmonies and richly textured percussion are so vibrant, they swirl around your heart, soul and body so joyfully, it’s impossible to do anything but surrender and dance along.” -NPR

While the group has performed primarily at village ceremonies and celebrations, they recently made waves with debut appearances in North America–even catching the attention of the New York Times, which wrote: “The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted.”

The evening will include a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson, DJ’ed sets by Mr. Pauer, specialty food and cocktails for purchase, and more.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts/ dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables. Each event features vibrant live bands, dance instruction, and vendors, all situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion.

Her creativity comes from influences like Celia Cruz, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra & Ella Fitzgerald to Luciano Pavarotti. She was accepted to the American Music and Dramatic Academy, a music conservatory in New York City where she quickly moved after graduating high school. This gave her the opportunity to study vocal performance, dance, acting and musical theater. Upon returning to Miami, Envee joined the music department at Miami Dade College where she became lead soloist for Juba Gospel Choir, leading them in a national competition and tour. She began her writing career shortly after that.

EnVee’s professional career has led her to a two year running show at Magic City Casino & The Casino at Dania Beach as the Opening Act for Kevin Ceballo. She has performed in great community events such as Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016 and Orgullo 2015. She wrote the theme song for the World Out Games Miami 2017, and had the honor of being the opening act for Cher at Hilary Clinton’s Presidential campaign fundraiser with the cast of The Cabaret South Beach at The Fillmore Miami Beach. She has sung the national anthem for The Florida Marlins in both 2012 & 2015, and was a special guest at the Orlando Pulse tribute at the America Airlines Area. EnVee was also invited to sing at the Miami Rocks Concert 2016 with the Miami Symphony Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center. She was crowned the First “Ultimate Voice Miami” and has competed in National and International television singing competitions such as the NBC show “The Winner Is” and “Yo Soy El Artista” on Telemundo, finishing in the top 6.

EnVee can currently be seen as the featured singer at the Faena Theater, inside the Faena Hotel in their new resident show SENSATIA and is working on a new jazz project which promises not to disappoint. Simple in their aesthetics, but profound and transformational in their messages, Menena Cottin’s books have been recognized by the New York Times, The Bogota Post, The Indian Express and the School Library Journal’s Best Books for Children, and some have been translated into as many as 20 languages. A sensation in her native Venezuela, and throughout Latin America, now she looks to crossover into the U.S. market alongside curator Pedro Quintero with an experiential exhibition that promises to spark curiosity and empathy, while awakening the inner child in us all.

Deliver the Dream, a South Florida-based nonprofit organization that organizes retreats for families experiencing a serious illness or crisis, presents its 6th Annual Red Hot Party at Hunters. Generously amplified by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and hosted by Daisy Dead Petals & Electra, this year’s free anticipated event begins at 7 p.m. with a scorching charity date auction showcasing some of South Florida’s most eligible LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Deliver the Dream’s first-ever LGBTQ Youth Retreat that will host as many 15 families (at no cost to the participants) to help them enhance coping skills, reduce stress and cultivate relationships with other families who have a child struggling with “coming out.” The retreat will also incorporate an HIV educational component and offer therapeutic discussions for both teens and parents. This retreat, along with nine other planned yearly retreats spanning various crises and medical conditions including autism, cancer, Down syndrome and epilepsy, combines traditional recreational activities with therapeutic activities, peer-to-peer discussion groups and expressive arts and music activities.

Guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the select group of LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes who come with their own unique accompanying entertainment packages which may include concert tickets, outdoor adventures, performing arts shows, sporting event seats plus dinner and much more, plus bid on silent auction items, enjoy drink specials and have fun while benefiting a great cause.

Admission to the 6th Annual Red Hot Party at Hunters amplified by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is complimentary. Guests are asked to party responsibly and arrive in style with an Uber or a designated driver.

“South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall” presents the outstanding clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Anat Cohen Saturday, April 21 at 8:00 p.m. in elegant Bailey Hall on the Broward College A. Hugh Adams central campus located at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie, FL 33314.The performance is preceded at 7:45 p.m. by “Ron’s 15” a jazz discussion. A graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, her imagination was captured by jazz. She explored Sidney Bechet to Sonny Rollins. Now a seasoned veteran, the Jazz Journalists Association has voted Anat Clarinetist of the Year for the past nine consecutive years, and she has topped both the Critics and Readers Polls in the clarinet category in DownBeat magazine every year since 2011. Why? Because Anat plays beautifully and is compelling as the ultimate musical story-teller. Exposed to myriad forms of music, she was particularly taken with classic Brazilian choro. She has become a major exponent of it in her performances and recordings, both as a leader and sideperson. Demand for her performances in Brazil and around the globe has created a heavy travel schedule for this seemingly indefatigable charismatic artist. This performance features her touring quartet.

ARTISTIC PERSONNEL

Anat Cohen – clarinet and tenor saxophone
Gary Versace – piano and keyboards
Tal Mashiach – acoustic bass
Ferenc Nemeth – drums
