“Roofs Rising” Represents Miami’s Greatest Reminder That Housing Ends Homelessness
Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Creates Art Installation to Ignite Awareness and Support Among Landlords About Homeless Housing Programs
November 8 – 15 at Brickell City Centre

More than 1,000 people call Miami streets home. The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust wants to change that by growing its stock of available rental units to house the homeless. To help raise awareness of this goal, and in honor of Homeless Awareness Day, November 9, 2017, the Homeless Trust is launching an art installation called “Roofs Rising”– an initiative that encourages the public to rethink the connections they have to landlords who may have available housing.

Roofs Rising is mosaic made up of more than 1,000 hand painted mini-homes laid out in the shape of one large house. Each house was painted by a different student, elected official, community leader or activist.

“Roofs Rising may be Miami’s greatest reminder to date that housing ends homelessness,” said Ronald L. Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.  “Our entire community needs to coalesce around the issue of affordable and supportive housing for homeless individuals and families, while learning about our RentConnect initiative, set up to fund homeless housing. We are using Roofs Rising as a non-traditional way to identify rental units so we can get more people off the streets, out of shelters, and on to living new lives full of hope and potential.”

Designed to call attention to the homeless housing needs in our community and to educate people about RentConnect, each house represents a homeless person living on Miami streets and in need of a home. The mini-homes will eventually become house-warming gifts to those in the Trust’s Continuum of Care, but more importantly, serve to open doors and pathways for supportive housing solutions for those most vulnerable in Miami-Dade.

The Homeless Trust’s RentConnect provides a team of housing professionals who connect landlords with tenants. The initiative provides guaranteed rent, high touch support for landlords and renters, security deposit support and claims based mitigation funds. Landlords wanting to register properties with the Homeless Trust should visit www.homelesstrust.org or call 305-375-5605.

More than thirty organizations– such as Ransom Everglades School, Florida International University, Chapman Partnership, Swire Properties, local elected officials and even federal officials – gave of their time and talent to decorate and paint houses and to assemble the project into a16’x20’ piece of art open to the public.

This unique art installation is being constructed as a first time project by Life Is Art, a Miami Beach based arts organization creating positive change in the community through art and culture events.

For more information on hosting the Roofs Rising art installation in your community, contact Adrienna Sotomayor at 305-571-1455.

About the band
Jarabe de Palo is unquestionably one of the biggest bands on the Hispano-American music scene in the last two decades.
However, Spain is currently embracing three big music genres: Latin, African and Anglo-Saxon (not forgetting its own flamenco, of course). This wealth of musical influences has helped to shape their music and given it its unique character.
Rock, funk, jazz and blues in a fusion with flamenco, Afro-Caribbean, Cuban and Brazilian music. Influences with a definite Latin feel intermeshed with other very strong musical influences from the Anglo-Saxon world. The result: pure fusion rock.
Jarabe de Palo was born in Barcelona (Spain) in the mid-1990s. The band’s first album, La Flaca (1996), opened up a new chapter in the fusion music scene of that time. In a very short space of time they became one of the most high-profile Spanish groups on the Latin-American music scene. Their unique way of understanding and mixing different styles made them one of the landmark bands in their genre. After La Flaca came Depende (1998), then De Vuelta y Vuelta(2001), Bonito (2003) and so on up to eight original albums and the same number of compilations, all published over the course of just 18 years.
15 nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards and collaborations with artists of the stature of Celia Cruz, Compay Segundo, Pavarotti, Alanis Morrissette, Chrissy Hynde (The Pretenders), endorse the quality, credibility and stature of the band.

This thematic competition gives eight artists, as well as two alternatives, the opportunity to paint their artwork on a unique medium: eight parking payment stations in Wynwood’s Business Improvement District (BID).

Perseverance is this year’s theme in order to empower the countless individuals affected by the recent natural disasters in the Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Texas, Mexico, Barbuda and St. Martin. Park Your Art will give winners the opportunity to paint messages that uplift victims. The goal is to empower the community through nonpolitical messages. Additionally, Park Your Art allows winners to request for donations to be made directly to their chosen charity.

This contest gives a voice to those victims as well as winning artists (established or otherwise) through a wide range of media coverage.

Miami Beach’s own Jacober Creative, an award-winning design and marketing studio, invites the public to a FREE opening night reception and art exhibition, IRL (In Reel Life): From Celluloid to Cellular, Recasting the Classics Through Graphic Design, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. With favorite films from the 1940s through the 1990s to serve as the agency’s inspiration, Jacober Creative placed their graphic design spin on American film culture, as filtered through the lens of the usually disposable medium of Instagram, recast onto everyday “objects of desire.” On display at the Cinematheque will be a unique range of 3-D showcases for the graphic designs, such as Bkr water bottles with Carrie inspired graphics, Vans sneakers with a design that is a tribute to The Birds, and a lunch box with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s-style graphic.

IRL (In Reel Life) will open with a reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5. The exhibit will run through December 31, and is free and open to the public. Saturday November 4 at 8 PM: International jazz/blues singer/songwriter Polly Gibbons, who has been compared to Adele and Gregory Porter, is receiving brilliant reviews and praise for her talents by artists like Van Morrison and Joss Stone, continues her quest of the U.S. with her third mini tour this year. She is accompanied by Kevin Bales (piano), Chuck Bergeron (bass), John Yarling (drums), and featuring Paul Bollenback on guitar. Inspired by Billie Holiday, the budding singer experienced an initial flurry of excitement in discovering jazz and blues, listening to such artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Thelonious Monk, etc. She was also greatly influenced by artists like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones and Bob Dylan. Polly has cultivated her craft and eclecticism over the past decade, performing at all the leading UK jazz clubs, international festivals and as a regular at the legendary venue Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, where she has sung with the All-Stars, led by pianist and house musical director James Pearson.

“There’s always this element of surprise from people who haven’t seen her perform,” says Pearson, Polly’s longtime songwriting collaborator and arranger. “She astounds me, too. She’s unpredictable.” In 2016, she opened the sold out UK tours for George Benson and Gladys Knight and had two acclaimed performances at the Royal Albert Hall. She was also a featured singer with the Liverpool Philharmonic in a presentation of the music and life story of John Lennon. Polly is quickly establishing herself in the States as well, with shows these past few years in Florida, Boston, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles and Birdland in NYC. She released her critically acclaimed UK debut album, “My Own Company,” in 2014.

Polly’s road now leads her to one of those extraordinary places with the release of “Is It Me…?” The album is a journey all its own – a culmination of so many moments that also signifies a meaningful new beginning for both the singer and contemporary jazz.

“A voice that is to Jazz what Adele’s is to pop: rich, powerful, soul-baring!.” – London Evening Standard

Arts Garage is located at 94 NE 2nd Ave in Delray Beach. Tickets are $30-$40-$45 at artsgarage.org or 561-450-6357. BRING YOUR OWN … WHATEVER! The theater boasts cabaret-style table seating, where patrons can bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol. Music courtesy of KCC Productions

Miami Motel Stories is a real-time immersive theatre experience that takes place inside one of Little Havana’s most beautiful and iconic buildings – the Tower Hotel. Built in 1920, this newly-restored boutique hotel has nearly a century of deep-rooted history in the neighborhood, and we’re telling those stories, inviting you on a journey of Miami’s past, present, and future… one room at a time.

Three ticket types unlock different experiences at the Tower Hotel. The first floor allows you to come and go as you wish through 12 hotel rooms. You’ll meet and mingle with characters from the neighborhood, and get to the heart of Little Havana in an experience through decades of its music, culture, history, and crime. The second floor is designed to be an intimate experience; you will enter these rooms, two at a time, for a close-up look at the people who lived or stayed in the hotel through time, including jazz icon Billie Holiday, who was a frequent visitor in the 50s.

Sunday shows begin at 3:05 p.m. and are supported by 305 Cafecito. Enjoy cafecito before, during and after the show.
Stay tuned for the secret code to get into the Tower speakeasy after the last show featuring live music from Miami’s favorites.

WHERE IS PACHANGA ISLAND?

WHEN IS THE PACHANGA’S HALLOWEEN PARTY?

If you are planning on staying overnight, you must bring with you everything you’d need for a comfortable stay… Especially, don’t forget:

— Small Trash Bag (Pick up after yourself. It’s a LEAVE-NOTHING-BEHIND event); We will provide Large Trash Cans for your smaller bags)

— Positive Energy (Collectively, we are going to create a Mind-Blowing Experience…)

WHERE TO PICK UP THE BOAT?

The boat pick up location will be around downtown Miami and the final address will be emailed to the people who purchase their tickets online a few days before the party.
