The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor (1948-2015) developed Synergism as a new art method through a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.
Artist-led hands on workshop. Participants should bring two to three everyday objects (wood, leather, rubber, ceramics, metal, no fabrics) with a personal connection to their lives and hometown. Objects will be combined to create a community collage/art piece reflective of Ekaterina and Victor Khromin’s aesthetics. Participants will share personal histories and discuss contemporary art aesthetics.

Originally created for The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, the Biennale of Moving Images (BIM) is a one-of-a-kind hybrid event that brings together visual artists, film directors and performers. It seeks to investigate new exhibition models and formats by building a show as a choir, merging polyphonic voices to offer a window into contemporaneity. This marks the 15th edition of the Biennale of Moving Images and the first time that it will be presented in the United States. Comprising a wide array of multimedia installations, films and documentaries as well as performances, the biennale is situated somewhere between a cinema festival, a constellation of solo video installations, one-night only performances and a site for research and experimentation. All works presented in the biennale are new, having been commissioned specifically for the event in 2016 in response to the current sociopolitical climate and as such are representative of the most innovative works in contemporary video and film production today.

Grammy-nominated jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa has been recognized as one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was included in the 2011 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. Ignacio also received a Lifetime Achievement Award during from The Montreal Jazz Festival in the same year.
Both a veteran and a pioneer, the Cuban-born drummer has been applauded through the years for his facility in combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk – resulting in a fiery blend that swings and grooves, with a touch of old country roots.
In the early 80s, Ignacio joined jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet, quickly becoming an in-demand drummer in the contemporary jazz world. Ignacio has also worked with other star artists like Tito Puente, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Gilberto Gil, the Lincoln Center Orchestra, and more.
Gillespie best described Ignacio as: “the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz…”.
The Ignacio Berroa Quartet positively sizzles and grooves, full of flair and flash. Ignacio possesses the uncanny ability to dazzle with his fills and lift a crowd to its feet. His electric energy, combined with his incomparable skill, gets people excited about playing drums in the first place.

Elsten Torres is a singer/songwriter/producer who came to New York from Havana as a child. He was lead singer and songwriter for the American Latin Rock band, “Fulano de Tal.” After the breakup of the band, Elsten has continued both his own career as a solo artist and has had success writing for other well-known performers such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermúdez, Alejandra Guzmán, Julio Iglesias, Aleks Syntek, Oscar de Leon, Marshall Crenshaw, John Rich, and many others. He has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, the second for his first solo independent album, “Individual.” He has won several BMI music awards for his songwriting and is on the board of governors for NARAS. Currently living in Miami, Elsten works with charity organizations such as “Hope” (Miami Beach Homeless) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He has recently released his second all English album, “Waiting for Clouds”.

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, hosts the Little Havana Social Club social dance series season finale with Herencia de Timbiqui – direct from Colombia, at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 22.
Hailed as “one of the most exciting tropical music acts out of Colombia in recent years” by World Music Central, and “Pound for pound, the best band of the Colombian Pacific” by Carlos Vives, Herencia de Timbiqui is an Afro-descendent group from the Pacific coast of Colombia, that combines ancestral and modern instruments for an irresistible sound that is folkloric and contemporary.
“Our musical richness is the fruit of many afternoons spent on the banks of the Timbiquí, River, in the middle of the Colombian Pacific jungle, when the marimba made from the chonta tree and traditional drums overtake the silence. That is our heritage”!
Timbiquí is a small town on the Colombian Pacific Ocean coast, surrounded by jungle and rivers. In the early aughts, composer Begner Vásquez and four other friends were forced to abandon their hometown due to the violence generated by illegal groups that controlled the area’s gold mines as well as the serious danger posed by paramilitary groups to Afro Colombian communities. They moved to Cali, the largest city on the Colombian Pacific coast, founded the band, and began to develop their unique take on their folkloric-rooted grooves, which are played with marimba made from the chonta tree, deer-hide drums called cununus and seed-filled percussion instruments called guasá–fused with contemporary instruments such as the electrical guitar, drums, trumpet and sax. An eleven member band, Herencia also added to the mix the salsa of Colombian dance halls as well as an exploration of funk, jazz and reggae. It is said that each concert is an explosion of energy, flavor and rhyhms that force audience members up from the seats.
Luckily, the Little Havana Social Club series–dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance–provides a dance floor for such an occasion. Intent on promoting community and engagement, the evening featuries a pre-concert dance lesson, DJ set, and local vendors selling specialty food and cocktails. Situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion, the audience has plenty of opportunity to mix and mingle, learn and engage.
About Herencia de Timbiqui
The folkloric ensemble honors traditional regional music styles and maintain a strong commitment to social issues, offering workshops and outreach to benefit underserved populations in Colombia. Their compositions harken back to ancestral roots – instruments, vocals, call and response, and rhythm – all the while being completely contemporary.
In 2006, Herencia de Timbiquí won first place in the Free Form Category in the renowned “Petronio Álvarez Pacific Music Festival”, the largest gathering of the music of the Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast. In 2010, their first international performance brought them to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and that same year, they were featured in the Colombia episode of PBS’s “Music Voyager”. In 2011, they performed two official showcases at SXSW to rave reviews. They’ve been awarded the ‘Gaviota de Plata’ award for Best Folkloric Song at the International Festival Viña del Mar in Chile, and the Colombian Shock Prize for Best Recording of the Year for their single “Amanece”. The band has performed in the closing ceremony of the World Games in Cali along with Colombian superstar Carlos Vives, and were selected to participate in the projects created by Vives as USAID’s first “Inclusion Ambassador.”
Their most recent album, “This is Gozar!”, bears the mark of renowned British producer William Holland (aka “Quantic”) and features two tunes deeply steeped in the band’s African roots: “Negrito”, which is a currulao (ancestral song and dance) and “A tu manera”, a fusion of reggae with aguabajo (traditional chants based on two vocalists). The album also features “Afrika”, a song composed during Herencia’s tour throughout Zambia y Zimbabwe, featuring Ghanaian guitarist, bandleader and living legend Ebo Taylor.
Herencia de Timbiquí has toured extensively thoughout Central and South America, Eurpoe, Africa and the US, and have also completed a series of 30 concerts in Dubai. This show marks their South Florida debut.

The Spot Barbershop will have a pop up for the men, and stylists will showcase multiple fashion shows by local boutiques, fashion bloggers including iShine365, Dyme Lyfe, graciouslylovedllc, Koko and Palenki, to name a few.
The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The Bitter Truth will have a pop up where they’ll carve the ice for each cocktail with a chainsaw, and they will also compete against Employees Only to come up with the “Best Cocktail” at Wynwood Life.

The Miami Design District Palm Court Performance Series is a weekly Friday night ensemble of live musical performances, open to the public. Expanding on the theme of Estefan Kitchen’s live entertainment, 19-time Grammy© Award winning producer, Emilio Estefan will produce the weekly series to showcase some of Miami’s brightest and hottest musical talent, including critically acclaimed rising star Emily Estefan.

Orchestra Miami commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) with the Florida premiere of Marvin David Levy’s Atonement on Sunday, April 23, 2017, 4:00 PM at Temple Israel of Greater Miami. Atonement is a reworking of three of Levy’s previous pieces that have never before been performed in South Florida. Exploring three critical moments of Jewish history — “Holocaust”, “Inquisition”, and “Masada” — Atonement will be performed by dynamic soprano and Miami favorite Elizabeth Caballero and Heldentenor Michael Robert Hendrick, with narration by Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn, Temple Israel’s spiritual leader. Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi will conduct the 53 professional musicians of Orchestra Miami and 16 voice choir.
The famous and frothy Overture to Candide by beloved composer Leonard Bernstein will open the musical program, followed by Atonement. The concert will be presented without intermission and last approximately 90 minutes.

Interconnecting the worlds of Christianity and Judaism, art and reality, life and death, love, desperation, and the ultimate triumph of hope and the human Spirit, the subject of the discussion is #NeverAgainIsNow.
The Dachau Album tells the story of two men that seek to reveal the mysteries Arnold Unger discovered at 15 years old. Upon surviving the concentration camp is Dachau, Germany, Unger possessed a leather-bound album of 30 drawings by Michael Porulski a Roman Catholic Polish political prisoner. The album also contains artifacts such as uniform patches, prisoner information and photos that help readers experience of the Holocaust in a way never depicted before.

Rose Max is the most in-demand and award winning Brazilian singer based in South Florida. Although she is most well known for her Bossa Nova and Brazilian jazz performances, this special project, Rose Max Samba Band, features 100% pure and authentic samba music from Rio de Janeiro. Led by Rose Max on vocals and percussion and renowned guitarist and arranger Ramatis Moraes, plus a rotating cast of guest drummers and percussionist, the evening features the great anthems of samba, from the traditional “marchinhas” of the 1920’s to the samba hits of today by Zeca Pagodinho, Arlindo Cruz, Beth Carvalho and more.

MCCJ is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Charles Blow, New York Times Op-Ed columnist since 2008.
The Hank Meyers Award goes to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community. Past honorees of this award include Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., ABC’s John Quiñones and Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd.
Charles Blow joined The New York Times in 1994 as a graphics editor and quickly became the paper’s graphics director, a position he held for nine years. In that role, he led the publication to a best of show award from the Society of News Design for the information graphics coverage of 9/11, the first time the award had been given for graphics coverage. He also led the paper to its first two best in show awards from the Malofiej International Infographics Summit for work that included coverage of the Iraq war. Blow is the author of “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” released in September 2014. He graduated magna cum laude from Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he received a B.A. in mass communications.
MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians & Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. In this work, Wilson asks, “What does it mean to belong?” and “What does it mean to NOT want to belong?”, core questions of Reggie’s investigations for this new evening-length dance work. In CITIZEN, Wilson drills down into the human desire to belong with exponentially expanding questions: “Do the injustices in today’s America engender a feeling of belonging? What supports belonging? What happens when three strangers walk into a shop for a haircut, only to find out they are all connected. Their future lies in their barber’s hands — the haircut they get will determine their fates. An improper nip will change the course of who they are. A perfect snip might save their lives. Come listen to how it all plays out — how the threads are braided together at Monarchs Cut and Shave.
Temple Fade a theatrical performance involving a hybrid of scripted and improvisational action. There will be an early and late seating followed by a reception with the creator, Vanessa Garcia, the cast and refreshments from Tito’s Vodka and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.

South Florida foodies can unite to help fight childhood hunger on Friday, May 12, 2017 when South Florida’s Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry returns to Soho Studios in Wynwood. The annual tasting event will feature the area’s top chefs, sommeliers and mixologists united for a cause: making sure all children in this country get the healthy food they need, every day. Proceeds from the event benefit No Kid Hungry’s work to end childhood hunger in America. The 2017 event signals its second year in Wynwood, inarguably one of the country’s hottest neighborhoods.
The 29th annual tasting event will take place from 7PM to 10PM, followed by an exclusive after party for VIP ticket holders and Chefs at Wynwood’s own R House from 10PM to midnight.
Led by new Chef Chairman Timon Balloo, South Florida’s food and beverage tastemakers will provide guests with savory samplings, craft cocktails and delectable desserts. The event will be emceed by CBS4’s very own Lisa Petrillo and Y-100 Miami’s on air personality Nick Pena. The benefit will also feature a silent auction with exclusive packages and a Citi lounge area for guests to relax and savor specialty cocktails. New to this year’s festivities will be the first ever Taste of the Nation Speakeasy featuring six of the hottest mixologists in South Florida paired with a select spirit, serving a specialty cocktail of their creation.

April 16 at 7 PM: The French Horn Collective comes to Arts Garage in Delray Beach. They are an energetic and progressive band that performs an eclectic variety of Gypsy Jazz, Swing, and modern original French music throughout South Florida. Led by Parisian Musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and songwriter Vincent Raffard, the diverse group consists of anywhere from 3 to 8 highly talented musicians from a myriad of musical backgrounds, with instrumentation including Trumpet, Guitar, Violin, Double Bass, Clarinet, and Vocals. Their wide variety of musical influences, ranging from Gypsy Jazz, Hot Swing, Ska, to Polka, result in the band producing a smooth mixture of progressive Gypsy/Parisian/Swing/World Music.

Conceived by Cuban-born guitarist/composer Eddy Balzola after years of touring with show bands, reggae and Latin bands, Las Vegas clubs etc., Oriente’s signature sound features funky, guitar driven tumbaos, blazing harmonic brass, and explosive Afro-Latin percussion – fusing Cuban roots with Blues, Jazz, Caribbean and Brazilian influences. Their first New Orleans concert at world famous Snug Harbor Jazz Club created a major buzz, attracting local musicians and world class audiences excited by their new Cuban roots fusion. Max Boot, the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, will be the featured speaker as part of the Dr. Bernard & Jeanette Gordon Halperin Memorial Lecture Series. Mr. Boot will appear on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 4:00pm in the Abess Sanctuary at Temple Israel.
A frequent guest on MSNBC, Max Boot is an independent thinker who writes prolifically about history, defense strategy, and foreign affairs. Mr. Boot is far more than an accomplished historian. He is engaged in current foreign policy challenges and debates.
He is frequently called upon to advise national leaders with respect to defense and foreign policy matters. Most recently, he served as a foreign policy adviser to Senator Rubio’s 2016 campaign. Previously, Mr. Boot advised Senator John McCain and Mitt Romney. The New York Times has called him, “A master historian,” and The Wall Street Journal has referred to him as, “A penetrating writer and thinker.”
Max Boot is a military historian and foreign-policy analyst who has been called one of the “world’s leading authorities on armed conflict” by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Max Boot’s latest book—The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam—is due out in early 2018 from Norton/Liveright. The Jeane J. Kirkpatrick senior fellow in national security studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, Max Boot is the author of three previous, widely acclaimed books: The Savage Wars of Peace: Small Wars and the Rise of American Power (2002), War Made New: Technology, Warfare, and the Course of History, 1500 to Today (2006), and, most recently, the New York Times best-seller Invisible Armies: The Epic History of Guerrilla Warfare from Ancient Times to the Present (2013). The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering a monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will host its 11th Annual Fairchild Artists in Bloom Exhibition and Sale on Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9; during the Spring Garden Festival.
The Garden House will transform into a gallery featuring more than 150 original works from more than 50 artists and Fairchild art instructors. The exhibition will showcase botanically-themed works in watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, and illustrations. AIDS Walk Miami is a 5K walk-a-thon fundraiser through the picturesque streets of South Beach benefiting over 15,000 individuals living in our Miami-Dade and Broward Communities who have been affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS.
The event continues to be Miami’s largest HIV/AIDS awareness fundraiser and continues to attract thousands of participants who walk for different reasons, but walk together for one common cause: to support Care Resource and Food For Life Network food bank and its work to prevent new infections, maximize the health outcomes of those infected, and to end the epidemic here in South Florida.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is launching its spring season with the presentation of “Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin.” With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor developed Synergism as a new art form through the use of a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.
Synergism centers on a search for freedom of expression, and captures the journey of this husband-and-wife team from their Soviet past to their emigration to the United States. The exhibition will feature paintings, installations and video by the Khromins, and will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017.
The artist reception will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet and greet Ekaterina and exhibition curator Maria Zavialova.
