A honored graduate of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Toshiko Akiyoshi and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. He won the 2007 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz CD and three additional nominations, including 2017.

The Coral Springs Museum of Art currently houses three exhibitions created by three talented local artists. All three exhibitions will be on display through May 20, 2017.

Stan Slutsky
From Op to Pop
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stan Slutsky skillfully employs geometric shapes in his “op” artworks that are rooted in Egyptian and classical Greek antiquity. His sense of humor, evidenced by his 3 dimensional sculptures of everyday delicacies, makes for a fun and interesting exhibition.

Virginia Fifield
Pneumatikos – A Spiritual Gift
Broward County resident Virginia Fifield’s seemingly familiar subjects in her charcoal drawings encourage a deeper contemplation about man’s relationship with nature. Her work is deliberately devoid of context and color to strip away all stylized associations to her subjects.

Alisa Grodsky
My Life as an Artist: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Recently relocating from New York City, Alisa Grodsky’s exhibition tells the story of her life as a professional artist and her unique ability to articulate a message.

300 + CRAFT BEERS IS NO JOKE AT
SPRUNG CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL

It might take place on April Fools, but when it comes to pulling together a unique lineup of beer from around the World, Sprung Craft Beer Festival doesn’t joke around. This free spirited approach to some serious beer tasting of over 300 craft beers will take place on April 1 and will overflow with unlimited beer samples, live music, food and games! It’s time to get Sprung!

This year, the festival put together an incredible beer lineup that includes New Belgium, Founder’s, SweetWater, Green Flash, Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewery, Kona, Magic Hat, Shiner, Shipyard, Harpoon, Blue Moon and others looking to showcase their spring and summer ales. Representing Florida will be Wynwood Brewing, Biscayne Bay Brewing, The Tank, J. Wakefield, Concrete Beach Brewing, Cigar City, Miami Brewing Company, Tequesta Brewing, Hialeah Brewing, Funky Buddha and M.I.A. Beer enthusiasts will also be treated to a selection not available in South Florida, and in keeping with tradition, the homebrew section will showcase brews created by locals who are passionate about their beer. Aficionados know to keep an eye on homebrew participants, because more often than not, they end up opening a brewery of their own.

The Kitchen Lab will feature four notable chefs who will conduct a cooking demo that either uses beer as an ingredient or pairs well with beer.

$45 at the door (general admission). To purchase tickets online, go to
www.SprungBeerFest.com. Ticket options include Beer Socialite ($70) and VIP ($90). Follow SWARM and Sprung! via @IGotSprung, #IGotSprung, @SWARM_EventAgency

Miniaci Theater
3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd,
Davie, Florida 33314

Cost: $40

South Florida Jazz, South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is thrilled to present The Stanley Jordan Trio on Saturday April 8, 2017, 8:00 PM. This concert will take place at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd in Davie. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased online from http://southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954.462.0222.

In a career that took flight in 1985 with immediate commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination and technical wizardry that sets him apart from every known guitarist. His music also is imbued with a combination of passion, sensitivity, humor, daring, and sheer brilliance. Whether bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight-ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected – sometimes playing the piano simultaneously!

In the mid-1980s, Stanley hit the scene much heralded because of his extraordinary, even revolutionary technique and virtuosity. Curiously, he remains under-recorded as a leader. Early acclaim and a nagging desire to do more than tour has led this shy and retiring artist to eschew the limelight. While many of his dates are solo performances, he will appear for South Florida JAZZ with an exciting trio with the extraordinary bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard, both long-term associates.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

In 2013, Iglesias was selected as a top contestant on NBC’s hit show “The Voice.” Her incredible performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” turned into a YouTube sensation overnight, and every judge had glowing comments after her performances. In 2012, Iglesias sang a duet with Franco de Vita and was featured in his live DVD album, “En Primera Fila,” which won two Latin GRAMMY Awards®. She has also shared the stage with artists including Beatriz Luengo, Alejandra Guzmán and Gilberto Santa Rosa. Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm & blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song.

In 2013, Karina was selected to be a top contestant on NBC’s #1 TV Show “The Voice”. Her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” turned into a YouTube sensation overnight and every judge had glowing comments after her performances. Wth her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias has showcased her strong elements of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

“I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly…, the light fixtures were just gonna explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”
(Adam Levine, The Voice)

Mad Cat Theatre Company continues its 17th season with a production of two of Vaclav Havel’s sharp political dramas AUDIENCE and PROTEST.

The subversive Czechoslovakian playwright, Prime Minister & President, Vaclav Havel was in danger of being declared a “social parasite” by the neo-Stalinist regime of Gustav Husák when he wrote AUDIENCE & PROTEST back in 1975 & 1978.

AUDIENCE deals with the travails of Havel’s alter-ego Ferdinand Vanek – recently released from jail for anti-government activities. Valek is stuck in the bleak office of the foreman of the brewery where he has been forced into menial labour. The tedious bureaucracy and constant paranoia of life under the Communists have driven the foreman to alcoholism and to the brink of insanity – he is prone to bouts of rage and despair.

In PROTEST, Havel’s alter ego Ferdinand Valek has escaped his hellish office to visit the middle-class home of one of his friends. He is hoping to convince his old friend Stanek to sign a petition renouncing the regime.

Both plays seek to shine a light on the darkness of censorship and tyrannical rule. Don’t miss the show that critics and audiences are raving over!

Directed by Paul Tei and Theo Reyna
Featuring Erik Fabregat, Michael Gioia, Noah Levine, and Pete Smith Rogan

Vaclav Havel’s AUDIENCE and PROTEST is running now through March 12, 2017, with performances Thursday – Sunday 8 p.m. in MTC’s Sand Box located at 9816 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores FL 33138. Tickets available NOW online at www.madcattheatre.org, www.mtcmiami.org and 305-751-9550 during MTC Box Office Hours.

Cochon555, the hyper-local festival with a flair for innovation, returns to Miami with its Heritage BBQ edition on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. The promotion of global food cultures and family farming will be the central themes of the day. From winemakers and distillers to barkeeps and chefs, dozens of the city’s biggest hospitality talents will be cooking – or creating drinks to match – Old World barbecue recipes cooked over live fires. To further champion the good food movement, a portion of all proceeds will go to Cochon555’s sister charity, Piggy Bank – a pig farming sanctuary.

Cochon555 is proud to announce the competing chefs for 2017 in Miami:
Chef Clark Bowen and Chef Rick Mace of db Bistro Moderne & Café Boulud Palm Beach – Contemporary French
Chef Tito Vargas of The Bazaar by José Andrés – Modern Spanish with a Twist
Chef Paula DaSilva of Artisan Beach House – Bold New American Cooking
Chef Jeremiah Bullfrog of gastroPod – Elevated Global Street Foods

At the heart of all Cochon555 barbecue events lies a culinary competition to promote local family farming and global grilling traditions. The chefs are each given one whole, heritage-breed pig of 200 pounds and one week to prepare the whole animal. Each chef must present a “Judge’s Plate” of six dishes to a panel of 20 notable judges. The panel scores each plate based on utilization; global influences; cooking techniques; and overall flavor in order to select a winner, who will then be crowned the “BBQ Prince/Princess” of Miami.

Video & live performance
Created by Natalia Lassalle

A powerful exploration of what it means to be a woman. To grow old, and to remember. This piece, which is part documentary video and part live performance, is a journey into the lives of women over 65 years of age across Miami, Puerto Rico and Quebec. Retiro melds the autobiographical with the surreal to illustrate the volatility of time, the reconstruction of memories, and the process of aging in women.

The opening exhibit will highlight the works of 18 contemporary artists whose bold and imposing pieces celebrate and honor the literary works of Maya Angelou, award winning author, poet, dancer, inspirational speaker and women’s advocate. The show will be on display through April 8th, 2017.

Untold Stories, an exhibit that highlights the female figure, historical transitions, societal opposition, silence, stories, hope and renewed vision, is sure to delight the senses of art aficionados and newbies alike. The exhibit features the works of established artist and muralist Freddy Villamil, mixed media artist and painter Alicia M. Vallejo and colorful bucolic scenes by renowned Sophia LaCroix among the many fantastic presenters. The exhibit was curated to present the best our Southeast Florida Community has to offer.

The opening reception for Untold Stories will take place on Saturday, March 11th at 6:30 pm and open the doors of NMB to a display that will accentuate the International Women’s Day/ Month celebration. The stage will be set with art in various formats including installations and sculptures. Local author, journalist, mixed media artist and winner of the 2016 Latin Book Award, Vanessa Garcia will launch the evening celebration. Inspirational and Empowerment speaker and author Kathy Andersen and Illustrator and author Alexandra Barbot will also be on-hand to make this a momentous event. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar will be available.

NMB Library observation of IWD has been celebrating accomplishments and energizing women of all ages to dream and achieve rather than allowing societal constraints for the past three years. As a member of the Institute of Museums and Libraries, NMB library is elated to present an occasion of powerful cultural significance to the North Miami Beach Community. “I’ve always been inspired by the stories of those who are able to rise above adversity” said, Edenia M. Hernández, NMB Library manager. “Maya Angelou went without speaking for five years after a hideous abuse, later she arose and told her stories.” This exhibit will deliver a formidable message of strength, resiliency and resourcefulness that leads to triumph. It will elevate the spirit through the arts and resonate with those who are energized to tell their stories freely, those conflicted by the past, struggling in the present or someone who appreciates the challenges faced. We can all RISE above our circumstances and seek a life as intended, filled with hope, dreams and accomplishments for the future. Artistic expression is a healthy way to articulate our emotions. “Above all this event should inspire us to tell our stories that we may pass on the hope that has been placed in us.”

When Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal released their first collaborative album, Chamber Music in 2011, they caught the music world by surprise. Everything about this duo was unexpected: the Malian master of the traditional harp, or kora; the French cellist with the unlikely background in trip-hop; and the elegant, soulful music they made together. After years of touring together Sissoko and Segal have created their own hybrid tradition, one that draws on the ancient well of West African troubadour songs, the rich heritage of Baroque music, and an elusive but somehow clearly modern sensibility.

Girls’ Club presents Offsite Performance by Christina Pettersson:: Along the Shadow of the River, a multi-disciplinary public performance set along the banks of the historic New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Taking place on the riverside grounds of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society at 219 SW 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301, Along the Shadow of the River takes inspiration from the historic river and the women whose histories are forever linked to its waters.

Audience members are invited to tour the grounds, encountering different performers as they make their way east across the railroad tracks in this progressive performance and walking tour. The performance will begin promptly at sundown.

Created by Christina Pettersson, the performance brings together local musicians, dancers, opera singers and artists to embody historic female figures who have made integral contributions to the founding and history of Fort Lauderdale.

Part homage, part history lesson, these interpretive, performative biographies tell the story of Fort Lauderdale’s forgotten heroines including: Frankee Lewis, Fort Lauderdale’s first permanent non-native resident circa 1824; Mary Brickell, the largest single property owner in the central part of Fort Lauderdale and prominent real estate developer/manager circa 1908-1922; Ivy Stranahan, Fort Lauderdale’s first school teacher, an active social activist, suffragette and proponent of Seminole Indian rights who lived in Fort Lauderdale from the age of 18 in 1899, to her death in 1971; and more.

Performers include Shanna Nolan Gundry, a Mezzo-Soprano opera singer; Shira Abergel, a professional multi-instrument musician, singer and actress; Tara Long, Miami-based experimental performance artist and musician under the alias POORgrrrl; Nikki Rollason, dancer and performance artist; Octavia Yearwood, an arts educator, choreographer and founder of Team Ohhh; Jessica Farr, actress, playwright and stand-up comedian; and Mae Silver, historian and author of numerous books including ‘Too Hot To Hide: Remarkable Women of Fort Lauderdale.’

Students of the Guitars Over Guns program, in response to the tragic loss of Jakyri Fleurimar (age 15), are releasing a remake music video of Wiz Khalifa’s hit ‘See You Again’, March 2nd, 2017 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Replacing verses of the original song with their own lyrics, GOGO students such as Xavier Gustave, cousin of Fleurimar, had the opportunity to express themselves in honor of Fleurimar’s memory and the many others lost to senseless gun violence. The song and video remake, which involved more than 80 Miami-Dade County Public School students, is a community call-to-action; a platform for those who can still speak up, want to be heard and want to make a difference.

This special screening, hosted by Local 10 Anchor Neki Mohan, will be the first public showing of this project, promising to engage the community in conversation surrounding solution-based actions. As part of the evening’s program, messages of encouragement will be delivered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho (via video), WSVN 7 Reporter Ann Keil and Commander Francisco Fernandez of the City of Miami Police Department.

Students spent months writing, rehearsing and editing this project, which was recorded at Noisematch Recording Studio in Wynwood, and filmed at North Miami Middle School with a special appearance by members of the North Miami Police Department.

Karen M’Closkey, a founding partner of PEG office of landscape + architecture, is a licensed landscape architect in the States of Pennsylvania, California and Michigan. She has over ten years of experience working on a variety of award-winning landscapes.

Karen is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches core design studios, advanced option studios, and contemporary theories of landscape architecture. Her advanced options studios explore techniques for working with repetition, ornamentation and surface modulation as a means to produce new forms of topography. Her book titled Unearthed: the Landscapes of Hargreaves Associates (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013) utilizes a selection of work by this highly regarded landscape architecture practice as a vehicle by which to gauge recent disciplinary trends. She received a research grant and publication grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and The David R. Coffin Publication Grant from the Foundation for Landscape Studies.

Other writings include “Synthetic Patterns: Fabricating Landscapes in the Age of Green”(Journal of Landscape Architecture, Spring 2013), “Not Garden” in VIA: Dirt (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2011), “Criticality in Landscape Architecture: Origins in 19th-century American practices, in Modernism and Landscape Architecture, 1890-1940” (Washington D.C.: National Gallery Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts, forthcoming 2013), among others. Her focus considers the use of design techniques and the environmental values they manifest in both Modern-era and contemporary landscape designs. Her forthcoming book (co-authored with Keith VanDerSys), entitled Dynamic Patterns: Visualizing Landscapes in a Digital Age (Routledge Press), situates the emerging expressions of pattern in landscape architecture.

Karen received a Masters in Landscape Architecture with distinction from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).

Keith VanDerSys is a founding partner of PEG office of landscape + architecture. Prior to founding PEG, Keith worked for other award-winning architecture offices as a project designer and project architect.

Keith is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. His construction and fabrication knowledge provides the foundation for successful integration of new technologies with conventional practices and materials. These courses are geared specifically towards investigating the relevancy of new forms of digital media and fabrication to site application. Students investigate common landscape products such as geo-synthetics, gabions, and unit-based materials, such as pavers and wall components, in order to forge alternative methods for constructing landscapes.

He received his Master of Arts in Critical Studies in Architectural Culture from UCLA and Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy. He was also the recipient of an URF Research Grant, EDCO Research Grant, Graham Foundation Grant, BSA Research Grant and an AIGC Fellowship.

The 117 Girls’ Club building opened in the fall of 2007, renovated for use as an unpredictable art space by local architect and designer Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio. Founded by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, and led by director Michelle Weinberg, Girls’ Club opened as the only private collection open to the public with a focus on contemporary art by women, in the world.

Throughout its 10-year history, the building has stood as a convergence point and catalyst for the growing contemporary art developments in the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County area. Its galleries have witnessed 10 major exhibitions of contemporary art, curated by emerging and mid career artists and curators. The building has hosted film screenings, artist talks, stitch and bitches, professional development workshops, experimental theatre, lectures, musical performances, parties, dinners, outreach workshops and countless student and community tours. Its walls have supported students artists, emerging artists, critically acclaimed artists, international rock star artists, both female and male. It’s doors have welcomed women, men, dogs, cats, lizards, students, children, carebears, and everything in between in an effort to fulfill its mission to educate the public, act as a resource and the nurture of the careers of contemporary female artists.

Join us as we cheers to its last exhibit and hear about the exciting next chapter in store for Girls’ Club!
