Koubek Center Launches Free Bilingual Family Series
Monthly Activities En Español Kick Off with a ‘Dia De Los Muertos’ Celebration!

Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, launches its new bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias, from Noon – 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a Día de Los Muertos celebration. This event is free and open to the public.

The series fills an important niche in Miami, as it provides parents an engaging (and free) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days will highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en Español.

Playtime begins with a festive bang–a Dia de los Muertos celebration. With help from The Puppet Network, Ameyal Cultural Center, and the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami, activities will include a puppet parade; thematic face painting and craft making (skull masks and papel picado: paper decorated with cut-outs); live Mexican folkloric music and dance performances and storytelling; an ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar) exhibit; a musical instrument petting zoo and more! Mexican food will be available for purchase.

The Playtime series continues on November 12 with Aventuras de Don Quixote (Adventures of Don Quixote).

The 2016-17 Season marks a new chapter in Koubek Center’s history–one in which the venue realizes its own programming. In addition to Playtime: Dias Familiares, Koubek Center’s signature series include Little Havana Social Club, concert/dance parties in the gardens and En Residencia, an artist-in-residency initiative aligning art with activism, artist with community.

After an incredible season on June, 2016 and the participation at The International Young Dancers Festival in Indonesia, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida prepares its new 2017 season with amazing programs showcasing the very best of international ballet.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the master composer Sergei Prokofiev, the Art Ballet Theatre of Florida, presents excerpts from the acclaimed classical ballet pieces, Stone Flower, Cinderella, Romeo & Juliet, plus the world premiere of a piece inspired by Prokofiev’s first symphony, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev, Artistic Director of the company.

Cinderella, is Prokofiev’s most descriptive, melodious and beautiful composition. This ballet piece was first premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1945 with choreography by Rostislav Zkharov. But this time south Floridians will have the privilege to experience of our talented Vladimir Issaev who promises create a short suite, alongside other great classical ballet pieces of the great Russian composer.

Stone Flower is Sergei Prokofiev’s eighth and last ballet, written between 1948 and 1953. It is based on the Russian Ural folk tale of the same name The Story of the Stone Flower by Pavel Bazhov and is also the last of the trilogy of ballets Prokofiev wrote in the Russian ballet tradition, a mixture of real-life scenes and fantastic dreams, of classical dance and folk choreography.

Arts Ballet Theatre’s production of the Stone Flower will feature choreography by Maestro Issaev. The story concerns the fate of the stone carver, Danila, who wishes to see the full power of the stone and show its beauty to the people. This classical piece shows a love story that showcases how this powerful feeling exceeds the adversities.

Issaev’s Stone Flower was commissioned by the Michiko Matsumoto Ballet in Japan, and its performance in 2011 received excellent reviews.

Also this program presents the ultimately love story of all times Romeo and Juliet, this piece composed by Prokofiev is based on the universal and remarkable play by Shakespeare. It is a romantic and dramatic tale of love between two youngsters coming from feuding families forced to hide their love and tragically ending.

Suites of the ballet music were heard in Moscow and the United States, but the full ballet premiered in the Mahen Theatre, Brno (then in Czechoslovakia, now in the Czech Republic), on December 30th 1938. The famous adagio of the balcony scene, with choreography of Lavrovsky will be an important scene presented by The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida. Mary Carmen Catoya and Daniel Sarabia principal dancers will be responsible for leading the main roles.

The program will also feature the collaboration of the distinguished guest choreographer Miao Zong with a beautiful ballet number named Bolero from the French composer Maurice Ravel. Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein, the piece, which premiered in 1928, is Ravel’s most famous musical composition.

Chinese native Miao Zong, have danced with Le Jeune Ballet de France, Ballet Nacional de Caracas, Boston Ballet and Ballet de l‘Opera du Rhin in France where he is currently assistant director. In 2004 he made his choreographic debut with Le Chant de Dieu, a solo that he danced at Boston Ballet and then was invited by Mr. Peter Martins to create a new piece “Entre nous” for the School of American Ballet in New York. And now The Arts Ballet Theater of Florida is privileged to have him as a collaborator.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is launching its Fall season with the presentation of Rolando Peña: Black Gold. In this exhibition, Peña explores oil as a substance that has marked the destiny of of modern and contemporary life. Black Gold is “participatory art” and captures viewers in an immersive experience through dance, cinema, video, photography, installation, architecture and design.

“Black Gold is the latest exhibition in MOCA’s storied succession of cutting-edge contemporary art presentations,” says Natasha Colebrook-Williams, Interim MOCA Director. “This exhibition explores the oil paradox and how entangled oil products are in our everyday life. Our mission continues to be to present diverse artists and topics that serve the greater community. MOCA is equally proud of the international outlook it is able to present and the unique exhibitions we share with our audience.”

As part of the experience, viewers enter a room with reflective mirrors and asymmetrical golden barrels suspended in the air as a laser beam traverses the space. Surrounding the MOCA pond, an installation of seven barrels refers to both the chemical elements of crude oil and the seven elements of design. The exhibition will run from September 15 – November 13, 2016.

Knight Arts Challenge 2016 Finalists Announcement

PRESS RELEASE
Knight Foundation names 68 finalists in Knight Arts Challenge Miami

MIAMI – Sept. 13, 2016 – Sixty-eight ideas were named finalists today in the Knight Arts Challenge Miami, a community-wide initiative funding the best ideas for the arts in South Florida.

Emerging from nearly 1,000 submissions, the finalists propose a range of projects to help make art general in Miami, a place where high-quality arts and cultural experiences can be found throughout the many neighborhoods. They include creating the country’s only contemporary art gallery in a national park, blending art and technology to engage transit riders, embedding artists in city planning departments and launching a Native-American film festival.

“The Miami of today is radically different from the Miami of 2008 when we first launched this challenge. Artists and cultural organizations have pushed this community to seek high levels of excellence, while continuing to experiment with new ideas. Our belief in this city, and our investment in its people, is born out every day in the performance halls, galleries and streets of Miami, and again by the 68 finalists in this year’s challenge,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation.

A full list of finalists is below and at knightarts.org.  Knight Foundation will announce the winning ideas, which will share $2.5 million, on Nov. 28, 2016.

This is the ninth year of the Knight Arts Challenge Miami, which offers matching funds for the best ideas for the arts. Applicants must follow only three rules: 1) The idea must be about the arts; 2) the project must take place in or benefit South Florida; 3) the grant recipient must find funds to match Knight’s commitment.

Since 2005, Knight Foundation has invested $122 million in the South Florida arts, supporting both large institutions, to help them better engage the public, and smaller, grassroots groups through the challenge. Previous Knight funding for local institutions created a new media program that includes the signature “Wallcasts” at the acclaimed New World Symphony campus, helps present Ibero-American films at the Miami International Film Festival, and is bringing every Miami-Dade third-grader to the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

For more on Knight Foundation’s arts program, visit knightarts.org or follow Knight Foundation on Facebook, or #knightarts and @knightfdn on Twitter and Instagram.

Craft beer lovers know that Grovetoberfest is a fun way to do some serious beer tasting of over 300 craft beers from around the world. This year, Grovetoberfest will move slightly South to Miami Marine Stadium; a move geared towards allowing more people to experience Florida’s largest beer festival. In addition, it has upped the ante by bringing a beer connoisseur on board who has been hand-selecting some of the rarest beers available for this year’s festival.

“We’re overflowing with good news. In our new home, Grovetoberfest will continue to offer local favorites and mainstream craft beers, but with a renewed focus on elite craft beers. We are working directly with the brewers to secure and reserve batches of incredibly esoteric and unique brews,” says Tony Albelo, organizer and chief sample taster for Grovetoberfest. This year, Blackberry Farms Brewery will be pouring in the VIP area. Civil Society Brewing will also be pouring at the event, making this the first time they’ve ever poured at a Miami-Dade beer fest. In addition, for the first time ever, Grovetoberfest will be pouring Prairie, Crooked Stave, To Øl, Mikkeller, and Slim Pickins. Aficionados will delight in sampling beers in the Sunshine State-of-Mind, a collection of over 40 Florida breweries including Wynwood Brewing Company, J. Wakefield Brewing, MIA Brewing, Funky Buddha, Saltwater, Banging Banjos, Due South and Biscayne Brewing, to name a few.

The new location allows for more room and easier parking. Other aspects of the festival include the VIP Lounge, which will be hosted by Chef M from Latin House Grill. In addition, it will offer certain perks not available to the general ticket holder such as specialty brews, covered seating area and air-conditioned bathrooms. The Homebrew Pavilion will showcase special brews made by passionate beer drinkers; the Food Row will offer food for purchase and the Kitchen Lab will feature beer/food pairing demonstrations by local chefs such as Ryan Martin from 180° at the DRB, and Zeke Man from 305 Brews. As usual, a Live Music Stage will feature dance-inducing music throughout the entire day.

Saturday Oct. 15 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

This long-established Cuban Son ensemble has charmed audiences everywhere with their ability to transport audiences to a nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Co-founded by Johnny Aguiló and Jose Elias in 1999, the group has since grown from a quartet to a group of nine members.

Through the many years of performing, Conjunto Progreso displays an array of legendary artists including Johnny’s father Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Congrego Luis Miranda, and bassist extraordinaire Eddie “GUA GUA” Rivera of the renowned group Batacumbele. Their familiarity on stage spans back to many major orchestras and musical associations in Cuba.

Their anticipated debut album titled “Masters of Cuban Son” was released in 2004. The record showcased an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers and astonishing arrangements from several members of the group. Their music is so widely acclaimed by the American public that they were honored with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album.

Art Basel in Miami Beach 2013 | ImpressionArt Basel stages the world’s premier art shows for Modern and contemporary works, sited in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong. Defined by its host city and region, each show is unique, which is reflected in its participating galleries, artworks presented, and the content of parallel programming produced in collaboration with local institutions for each edition. In addition to ambitious stands featuring leading galleries from around the globe, each show’s singular exhibition sectors spotlight the latest developments in the visual arts, offering visitors new ideas and new inspiration.

Exhibitors will present works of art – from historically significant projects and film, to painting, photography and largescale sculpture – by Modern and contemporary artists. With a reapplication rate of 98% for the Galleries sector and in addition to a strong selection of returning exhibitors, the show features 21 galleries who are completely new to the Miami Beach edition, including 12 first-time entrants to the Galleries sector. The fair, whose Lead Partner is UBS, takes place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 1 – 4, 2016.

Attracting leading collectors, curators, museum directors and critics from across the globe, Art Basel in Miami Beach is the premier art show of the Americas, with half of the galleries having exhibition spaces in the region. The geographically diverse list of participants spans 29 countries around the world, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
2016 marks the fifteenth edition of the Miami Beach show, which has expanded over the years to include dedicated sections for film, outdoor sculpture, works in edition and curated shows of historical significance. The show has always offered both exploration – with new works created by emerging artists – and a continuity of a high quality international roster. Over 85 galleries exhibiting this year also took part in the very first edition in Miami Beach in 2002.

Joining an extensive roster of returning galleries will be first-time participants from North and South America, including from Los Angeles: The Box, Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Various Small Fires; from New York: Callicoon Fine Arts, Clearing, Di Donna, Thomas Erben Gallery, JTT and Off Vendome; from Mexico City: House of Gaga and joségarcía ,mx; and from Curitiba in Brazil: Simões de Assis Galeria de Arte.

New participants from Europe include Christian Andersen, Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M., Galerie Greta Meert, Galerie Maria Bernheim, High Art and Vigo Gallery.

Reflecting Art Basel’s global reach, first time exhibitors from Asia will include Edouard Malingue Gallery, Leo Xu Projects and Nanzuka. For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/miami-beach/exhibitors.

Comprising 193 of the world’s leading galleries, the Galleries sector presents the highest quality of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography and video works. Highly competitive, the sector is always a highlight, leading 98% of last year’s exhibitors to reapply. In addition to many long time exhibitors, Galerie Nagel Draxler returns for this edition following a five-year hiatus. After previously participating in the show’s proposal based sectors, eight exhibitors will join the Galleries sector for the first time, including: Altman Siegel, Bergamin & Gomide, Cherry and Martin, GALLERYSKE, Galerija Gregor Podnar, Labor, Menconi + Schoelkopf and Pilar Corrias. For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/miami-beach/galleries.

The Edition sector presents 11 global leaders in the field of prints and editioned works. This year’s show will feature Alan Cristea Gallery, Carolina Nitsch, Crown Point Press, Gemini G.E.L. LLC, Pace Prints, Paragon, Polígrafa Obra Gràfica, Sabine Knust, STPI, Two Palms and ULAE.

Also of note will be solo exhibitions of Wanda Pimentel (b. 1943) at Anita Schwartz Galeria de Arte and Michael Dean (b. 1977) at Supportico Lopez. Simone Subal Gallery will present a large-scale collaborative environment and video by Anna K.E. (b. 1986) and Florian Meisenberg (b.1980), while Ghebaly Gallery will exhibit a site-specific collaboration between Kelly Akashi (b. 1983) and Patrick Jackson (b. 1978), exploring the use of architectural space and a visceral relationship to the body.

In addition to showing premier artworks across five gallery sectors, many exhibitors will present works in Art Basel’s project-based sectors: Kabinett, Public and Film, currently being selected. Over the coming months, further details about these special sectors as well as about the Conversations and Salon program of panels and talks will be released.

The Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel’s home since the Miami Beach edition launched in 2001, is currently undergoing renovation, to be completed in 2018. Carefully planned by city officials around the Art Basel shows, the construction will result in improved exhibition halls and state of the art facilities for exhibitors and visitors. During the renovation, Art Basel will continue to take place throughout the same four exhibition halls as in past years. For more information on the project, please visit mbccfuture.com.

Other highlights include ‘Modern Dutch Design’, ‘The Pursuit of Abstraction’, The Politics of -Isms’ and ‘Visionary Metropolis: Tony Garnier’s Une Cité Industrielle’ at the WolfsonianFIU; a project by Mark Dion at the Kampong National Tropical Botanical Garden in partnership with Florida International University; ‘Question Bridge: Black Males’ and ‘Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers’ at the Norton Museum of Art; ‘When We Were Young’ and ‘José Parlá: Roots’ at YoungArts; and ‘The Other Dimension: Contemporary art practice as the existence of higher dimensions’ by Antuan Rodriguez at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Recently rebranded as The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum will present off-site activations throughout the week as the museum looks ahead to its re-opening in Spring 2017.

Visitors from across the world will also have the opportunity to view the city’s internationally renowned private collections. This includes ‘Toda Percepción es una Interpretación: You are Part of It’ with works from Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and CIFO Collection at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), ‘Progressive Praxis’ at the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, ‘Jannis Kounellis: Paintings; Anselm Kiefer: Installations; Featuring: Radcliffe Bailey, Florian Baudrexel, Mark di Suvero, Mark Dion, David Ellis, Mark Manders, Olaf Metzel, Meuser, Will Ryman and Jason Schmidt’ at the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse and ‘High Anxiety: New Acquisitions’ at the Rubell Family Collection.

This masterwork by Krzysztof KieÅ›lowski is one of the 20th century’s greatest achievements in visual storytelling. Dekalog focuses on the residents of a housing complex in late-Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas. Its ten hour-long films screen in pairs once during the course of a week and draw from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure. Dekalog arrestingly explores the unknowable forces that shape our lives.

Concrete Beach Brewery celebrates the great German tradition of Oktoberfest with its second-annual Blocktoberfest celebration. The event marks the launch of Floridafest, Concrete Beach Brewery’s Oktoberfest-inspired lager (description below). Guests are encouraged to get their oompah on with the Larry Roberts Polka Band. Oktoberfest-inspired food will be offered, including special handmade sausages by Miami Smokers. And what’s an Oktoberfest celebration without traditional games like the pretzel toss, a pretzel eating competition, a pretzel eating relay race and a stein hoisting contest to challenge those beer muscles?

In recognition of September being Hunger Action Month, one dollar from every pint of beer sold during Blocktoberfest will be donated to Feeding South Florida, the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in South Florida (with a maximum donation of $1,000). During the month of September, Concrete Beach guests are also encouraged to bring in nonperishable food items. Those who bring in three or more items will get their first beer for only $2.
