Peter Hosfeld: Entropia

Sept. 10 – Oct. 23, 2016
Friday, Sept. 9, 6 – 9 pm

Born in Spain and raised in Norway, Peter Hosfeld studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His subsequent career in the video-game industry has combined with influences of modernist abstraction to produce a vocabulary of expressionist/comic style mark-making that signals entropy as a dynamic force of transformation.

Entropia features paintings of “narrative abstraction” in which frenetic movement is portrayed using high- and low-culture references. Two installations utilize decay and time as active ingredients to produce uncertain outcomes. Using local ocean water as a hostile medium of corrosion in which oil paintings on steel plates are submerged, Hosfeld considers issues of impermanence, temporary measures and unpredictability. The same elemental forces are at work on everything in this world, including us.

Cirque du Soleil returns to Miami with Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities!

Premieres December 10, 2016 under the iconic
blue-and-yellow Big Top next to the Miami Dolphins Stadium

Cirque du Soleil returns to the Miami area in 2016 with its acclaimed touring show, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiositiesâ„¢ proudly presented by Visa Signature®. KURIOS will premiere under the iconic blue-and-yellow Big Top on December 10th, 2016. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed. The name of the show refers to the humble and strange characters that inhabit the Seeker’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

Tickets are now available for purchase by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/kurios or calling 1-877-9 CIRQUE (1-877-924-7783). Tickets range from $39 – $160.

KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities had its world premiere in Montréal in April 2014 and is Cirque du Soleil’s 35th production. Since its debut, the critics have been raving across North America: “Cirque du Soleil has come roaring back with KURIOS – a dazzling, hyper-detailed, potent, quixotic and generally fantastic show that reveals this extraordinary artistic company’s singular capacity for exploration and metamorphosis. It is not to be missed on any account,” said Chris Jones in The Chicago Tribune. “KURIOS is the most enthralling, consistently over-the-top magical show Cirque du Soleil has sent our way in a long time,” raved Robert Hurwitt in The San Francisco Chronicle. “KURIOS is the most joyous piece of theater I’ve seen in years and it will lift your spirits to the stars,” said Richard Ouzounian in The Toronto Star. And Misha Berson in The Seattle Times raved, “KURIOS thrills in a splendidly captivating new show.” The Los Angeles Times made it a Critic’s Choice.

In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a Seeker discovers that in order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, we must first learn to close our eyes.
In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker is convinced that there exists a hidden, invisible world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. A collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor in an attempt to ignite the Seeker’s imagination, his curios jump to life one by one before his very eyes.

Michel Laprise
Michel Laprise worked in theatre for nine years as an actor, director and artistic director before joining Cirque du Soleil in 2000. At Cirque du Soleil, Michel spent fi ve years as a talent scout before taking on, in 2006, the role of Special Events Designer. In that capacity, he directed the act with Quebec diva Diane Dufresne during the Opening Ceremonies of the Montreal 2006 Outgames; the large-scale performance event created for the launch of the Fiat Bravo in Italy (2007); the Cirque du Soleil performance event celebrating Quebec City’s 400th anniversary (2008); the launch of Microsoft’s Kinect console at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, broadcast on MTV; the opening show at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Russia in 2009; and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 FIBA International Basketball Federation World Championships in Istanbul. In 2012, Michel collaborated with pop star Madonna, providing artistic direction for her performance at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show; he later went on to direct her MDNA tour. In 2013, he directed the musical Robin des Bois – Ne renoncez jamais which toured in Europe. Michel co-wrote and directed the VR movie “Kurios : Inside the Box” which won 3 prizes, one of them being the Emmy Daytime award in the Outstanding Interactive Media category. Michel is currently working on 2 Cirque du Soleil upcoming shows.

You will be hard pressed to find a movie without at least one car scene and some of the most iconic movie scenes take place in them – Mad Max, True Detective, Fear and Loathing Las Vegas, Pulp Fiction, David Cronenberg’s Crash, Children of Men, Repo Men, the Virgin Suicides. The entire movie LOCKE was shot inside a car. So how do you deal with tight spaces, many actors, action scenes, lenses, lighting for mood, accounting for moving shots, rigs?

Not many resources online address this topic. That’s why we at FilmGate Miami, together with our friends at RED Digital Cinema, have created a workshop to answer these questions.
This is a hands-on workshop for participants with some knowledge of camera and lighting, who are interested in exploring original ways to interpret their car scenes visually. Students will practice their skills on a stationary car set within the RED Digital Cinema store.

iPads For Soldiers mission is to purchase and donate iPads to US Soldiers serving in Afghanistan and those wounded stateside in military hospitals.

After Winnie Pritchett’s oldest son, Wesley, a WestPoint 08′ graduate who flies Kiowa Helicopters was deployed to Jalalabad, Afghanistan she learned that many of our deployed warriors serve in remote regions and have very limited access to TV, internet, cell phones, and no way to carry heavy books or computers in their 110-lb rucksacks. It became obvious to her that the typical care package of candy and magazines wasn’t enough. They needed something that allowed them to speak with their families back home, apps that could help them cope with strenuous situations, the ability to share photos with loved ones, watch movies, listen to music, read books, and even learn new skills and stay up to date on their training… what they really need is an iPad.

It’s time to say goodbye to summer (boo!) and hello to a new school year, so what better way to celebrate this (and say until next year, lovely summer) than with some awesome 90s grunge music? Once a month Artistic Vibes, otherwise known as AV, produces a booked music and poetry night called ReVerb. This month AV presents a totally 90s infused Grunge ReVerb. Some of the line-up for this month includes the very popular local band Panda-Rama, Vee & the Villains, the amazing poet Erika Marrero, and, of course, a performance by our own house poet Narciso Montas (who will make your heart beat faster with his poetry!).

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Unbroken Resilience, Independent Film Premiere on August 20, 2016

She was raped as a teenager. Aprille was hopeful about the world and how she would contribute to it. Imagine our young ladies are wrapped up with this same innocent feeling, with back to school and college upon us. This independent short film, Unbroken Resilience, takes on innocence, trust and dating to help all-young women know how to have and command respect. On August 20th, 8:00 pm at the Awa Kava Lounge in Miami, FL, Executive Producer, Aprille Franks-Hunt and Producer, Nikki Woods, of the Tom Joyner Morning Show brings their powerful message to our community.

After returning home, native Miamian, Barbara Pender wanted her first project to give back to the community. A part of the proceeds were also gifted to the Women Recharged foundation; they provide tools and resources to women “helping them lead lives that are electric”.

Join SFLHops as we host LINCOLN’S BEARD BREWING COMPANY’S third bottle share. This is your opportunity to come check out this new, massive brewery. If you would like to participate then you agree to (1) bring at least two good, quality bottles of beer*, (2) purchase at least a beer from Lincoln’s Beard Brewing, and (3) relax, let the bottles be opened orderly by one or two people only.

For the novices, bringing a good bottle means NOT bringing anything found at grocery stores. If you go to a liquor store then be sure to purchase bottles from the special release or seasonal section. Your best bet is to bring a beer that has been specially released from a brewery These are just some examples. If you are a beer trader then we know you’re coming with some awesome beers from other states.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is delighted to announce this month’s musical performance by the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Jazz Band’s name “Dixieland” is a name bestowed to the style of jazz performed by early New Orleans jazz musicians. This is one of the earliest styles of jazz music and the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band is the leading band devoted to this genre of music. The style combines earlier brass band marches, French Quadrilles, beguine, ragtime, and similar styles to achieve this unique style of music.

While instrumentation and the size of the bands may vary, the “standard” band comprises a “front line” of trumpet, trombone, and clarinet; and the “rhythm section” of either guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, or piano and drums. This intricate jazz sound of music is kept alive by a handful of dedicated bands.

The MOCA galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, in partnership with the Miami Science Barge, is bringing the expression of art to a scientific experiment with Trash Detectives during Art Days 2016 on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority, Art Days 2016 kicks off the arts season with events and exhibitions around downtown Miami.

Taking place onboard the Miami Science Barge, a floating marine laboratory and public environmental education center located in Museum Park, Trash Detectives invites visitors of all ages to create artworks on drift cards that will be deployed into Biscayne Bay as part of the Bay Drift research project being conducted by Frost Science, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and University of Miami-based ocean currents consortium, CARTHE (Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment). Visitors will also have the chance to tour the barge and interact with visiting artists and scientists. Drift cards are thin, biodegradable pieces of wood, colored with bright non-toxic paint that will be used by scientists to learn more about how ocean currents in the bay transport oil, marine debris, and other pollutants.

Following Art Days, local organizations will release the drift cards from seven locations throughout Miami-Dade County. The beautifully colored drift cards will move into and within Biscayne Bay until someone finds it and reports the discovery to the scientists. On the cards are instructions asking the finder to report the date and location found.
