Wynwood Art Walk has become one of the most iconic events in Miami, and SWARM, the creator of its epicenter along NW 23rd Street and 5th Avenue, is now poised to serve as an advocate for the Miami music scene by showcasing local talent. “We’re committed to bringing live music to Wynwood Art Walk, and much like our passion for all things local, we intend to give Miami musicians a platform to promote their music,” said Tony Albelo, partner of SWARM.

Wynwood Art Walk will include a main stage where several bands will be scheduled to perform starting at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, August 13, SWARM is hosting four local bands, including the sun-drenched, garage rock headliners SunGhosts and their debut album release party. The album was recorded at Cutting Cane Studios in South Florida and was produced by two-time Grammy-winning producer Joel Someillán. Although the album is set for worldwide release (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) on August 23, eager fans will get to pre-purchase it at Wynwood Art Walk, ten days before its official launch. This installment of Wynwood Art Walk will also feature live music sets by Alexander Di Leo, KIDS, and Magic City Hippies. For info on pre-ordering SunGhosts’ new album, follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sunghostsofficial.

As always, Wynwood Art Walk is free and open to the public every second Saturday of the month. It’s the best place to people watch. It’s where locals get meet local artisans eager to showcase and sell their craft. It’s the place to satisfy that craving for five-star food trucks, and now, it’s the place to get up close and personal with Miami musicians who deserve to be center stage. Metaxy and The Magic City
An M.F.A. Thesis Show by

‘Metaxy and The Magic City’ was Kareem David Piper’s Masters in Fine Art thesis show, and reflected his perception of various social settings and transient scenes he encountered on a daily basis here in Miami, FL. The depicted images were sourced from photos the artist had taken while riding the Miami Dade Metrorail, which is very close to the artist’s studio and is itself very symbolic of the transient state that exists here in Miami.

Kareem’s work reflects the contemporary human condition of existing in a constantly ephemeral state. With technology making the world much more accessible, human beings are able to connect far and wide like never before. His work questioned the true depth of these connections, made with people and places which are encountered only in passing. The pieces evoked a feeling of internal splitting or dislocation, and forced the viewer to question how they perceived their own reality.

Buffalo Brown (Cog Nomen) provided some vapor funk / ambient live music for us, all hosted at Yo Space.

Millions around the world are tuning into what will be the most remarkable Summer Olympic Games yet. On Friday, August 5th at 4:30 p.m., JohnMartin’s Restaurant and Irish Pub will kick off their Brazilian-themed “Premiere Party” for the highly anticipated 2016 Rio Olympics. Watch the must-see Opening Ceremony streaming live from all seven of their TVs, while wearing a Carnival mask, sipping caipirinhas and eating Coxhina and Pastels. And if you look like the famed Brazilian model, Gisele Bundchen, now’s your time to win prizes!
JohnMartins will be the perfect place to watch and celebrate your favorite athletes. Guests will also be able to enjoy a selection of Brazilian cuisine and the hypnotic rhythm of a Brazilian dancer during the Olympic premiere party.
The evening festivities will begin just prior to NBC’s scheduled telecast of the event at the world-famous futbol (soccer) Maracaña Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Guests at JohnMartin’s will have the chance to order the national cocktail of Brazil, called las caipirinhas, which is made with cachaça, sugar, and lime. “We’re trying to get as close to Rio as possible, without having to buy a plane ticket. We anticipate it being a night of celebration and unity, as the world comes together in respect and honest competition,” said Martin Lynch, co-owner with John Clarke. “This event is a great opportunity to experience the hype of cheering for your country amongst a fun and friendly crowd.”
The 2016 Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony will be an artistic spectacle, including more than 6,000 volunteers, and will feature welcome remarks by dignitaries, the Parade of Nations, and the final leg of the torch relay before the Olympic cauldron is lit. The last torchbearer is a closely guarded secret during the months-long journey from Olympia, Greece to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It might even be soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, but it will remain a mystery until the show begins. This celebration of Brazilian culture and world nations can’t be missed.
JohnMartin’s has been continually recognized for its delicious cuisine and voted “Best Pub Food.” The restaurant has Trivia Night on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Karaoke on Friday at 10 p.m. On Saturdays, guests can expect contemporary top 40 hits to rock to today’s popular Irish ballads and Sundays the restaurant serves brunch and hosts an Open Mic Night for aspiring singers at 8 p.m. JohnMartin’s is located at 253 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. The award-winning feature-length documentary film chronicles the life of MDC graduate Juan Gomez. Academically gifted, Juan firmly believes in the philosophy and promise of the American Dream. Facing separation from his parents, and caught in the midst of a dysfunctional immigration system and a deadlocked Congress, this bright, hardworking student struggles to gain legal status in the United States, the country he entered at age two with his parents who fled Colombia seeking asylum.
Much is at stake for DREAMers like Juan, remarkable young immigrants currently protected from deportation by President Obama under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The 2016 presidential race has further heightened their fear of deportation, amid calls for mass round-ups and the deportation of all persons lacking legal status. AI Justice has been fighting for immigration reform since opening our doors in January 1996 and staff continue to work tirelessly to protect immigrant’s basic rights.
Panelists will include the film’s director, Aldo Bello, former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, and prominent DREAMer and immigrant rights leader, Gaby Pacheco. AI Justice’s Executive Director, Cheryl Little, will moderate.

Photographs of South of Spice by Bob Quesada

This past Tuesday, hundreds of Foodies stormed the Southern tip of South Beach looking to experience the ultimate gastronomic crawl…and my oh my!!!… did they ever!!!

La crème de la crème of the world-class restaurants in the South of Fifth neighborhood rolled out their red carpets and proceeded to showcase their greatest hits to welcome the participants of South of Spice.

Only in its second year, South of Spice is quickly becoming the “must do” event for all foodies in the South Florida area. Its popularity can be attributed to three factors: affordability, quality and execution. Where else can you experience eight Top-Tier restaurants for $45.00?

Now, this is not a one meal, one dish type of set-up. We are talking about an unending parade of samples of the best each restaurant has to offer. You can eat as much as you want. Each restaurant also included complimentary beverages to accompany the samples. We are talking from a wonderful Sterling Vineyards Merlot at Red, The Steakhouse to Caipirinhas at Fogo de Chão.

As if the price and the quality weren’t enough, there are motor coaches, provided by miRide, on constant rotation to effortlessly chauffeur you from doorstep to doorstep. You don’t have to walk if you don’t want to but after several waves of delicious samples, a little walking helps.

Another good thing about the event is that South of Spice benefits the CI Foundation and their community initiative Eat Smart, which finds a balance between battling childhood hunger and providing healthy meals to promote youth nutrition.

The participating restaurants were: Red, the Steakhouse; Cibo Wine Bar; Il Mulino; Fogo de Chão; Izzy’s Oyster Bar; The Local House; Radio Bar and Craft Social Club .

We couldn’t visit all of them this time around but we can’t wait for next year!

A reverberation, or ReVerb, is created when a sound or signal is reflected causing a large number of reflections to build up and then decay as the sound is absorbed by the surfaces of objects in the space… At AV the sounds and words never decay… they’ll echo through the crowd and energize the vibe throughout the night. So come out, kick back, free your, mind and express your soul! And this month AV will be celebrating the love we all feel for the summer with an amazing line-up that includes: Rene Castell, Juan Gamero, The Motels, Lucille, Above the Skyline, Folks Tale San Pedro and many more!

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Five FOMO-Inducing Miami Swim Week 2016 Moments

Tori Praver and daughter Ryan. Image by Alexander Tamargo / Getty Images for 1 Hotel and Homes South Beach

Have you ever suffered from FOMO? Well, every time I leave Miami I’m plagued by major fear of missing out and last weekend it hit an all time high as Brad and I jetted off to California right smack in the middle of Miami Swim Week. Swim Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year for three reasons: (1) it is my chance to catch up on the swimwear trends of the upcoming season, (2) the rosé and champagne filled parties are always super fun, and (3) I can stock up on bikinis at bargain prices. Alas, this year it was not meant to be for me but I was super grateful that #ThankYouMiami contributor Celeste was able to capitalize on (and cover) the beautiful chaos in our absence. Thanks to her excellent reporting and our ace investigative skills, I was fully aware the entire time of how much awesomeness I was missing while out of town. Here are the five Miami Swim Week 2016 moments that elicited the most FOMO:

1. Miami Fashion Bloggers modeling at Miami Magazine’s Splashion 2016
On Wednesday, July 13 several Miami Fashion Bloggers, including our tot-loving, trouble-making friends Evelyn Torres of Brickellista Files and Kelly Saks Guerra of Kelly’s Kloset, kicked off Miami Swim Week by strutting their stunning bikini bodies down the runway. The event started off like your run-of-the-mill swimwear runway show but the blogger babes turned it into an entertaining affair by putting their personalities on full display. I award full points to Ginger Harris who broke out a flawless bird of paradise pose on the catwalk. (I mean, I can’t even get my leg half as high in the comfort and privacy of a yoga studio.) Way to show the world that Miami bloggers bring it, ladies!

2. 6 Shore Road by Pooja x Jose Cuervo’s #BeachToBar Party at the FAENA Hotel
On Friday, July 15 it was all about the 6 Shore Road by Pooja x Jose Cuervo limited edition swimsuit collar. Celeste reports:

“Right upon entry we were greeted by Jose Cuervo stocking up the pool bar with amazing ready-to-drink margaritas, in every flavor you might have ever fantasized. Although we can definitely vouch the deliciousness of every flavor after trying them all, the refreshing watermelon margarita was our favorite and the perfect poolside companion during 6 Shore Road by Pooja’s Resort 2017 reveal. Across the pool we could see pastel florals swaying in the wind and decorating the crowns and bodies of 6 Shore Road’s girls—until surprise host Adrienne Bailon brought the unique designs over for a closer look. (We were delighted to have the pleasure of catching up with her and admiring the curve hugging one piece she was rocking!) From the collection, the long sleeve one-piece caught our eye because it looked feminine and the model vouched for how comfortable it was to wear. That said, the entire collection was beautiful in its retro-inspired goodiness. It’s exciting to see a comeback of one pieces and those retro high waisted bikini bottoms past generations had the pleasure of experiencing back in the day.”

3. ESCAPE Miami at The Sagamore Hotel
Back for its 4th year in a row, the ESCAPE Miami Style Lounge curated by Annie Vazquez of The Fashion Poet and Peroni was hot, hot, hot. Celeste recounts:

“On Saturday July 16 the ESCAPE Miami Style Lounge transformed the usually serene environment of the Sagamore Hotel into a hustling-and-bustling pool party celebrating Miami’s visionary entrepreneurs. We stopped by to meet local up-and-coming businesses who were showcasing their products on-site. The main attraction was the fashion show launching ZK Swimwear by the beautiful Zuleyka Rivera. The former Miss Universe 2006’s swimwear line may be inspired by her home of Puerto Rico, but thanks to its delicately crafted patterns and tropical vibes fits seamlessly in the Miami style. Pool parties can get messy—especially given how brutally hot this summer has been—so we couldn’t have been more grateful for ESCAPE Miami’s beauty vendors. We were able to keep ourselves looking (and smelling) presentable with our DIY signature scent from Akscent Perfumes, beautifully braided tresses by Blo Blow Dry Bar, and expertly groomed brows from the Brow Lash Brow Bar. They worked hard to us on fleek from head to toe, while we cooled off with deliciously naughty mango slushies by Kryogenifex.”

4. The Mommy & Me Cuteness from Tori Praver of Tori Praver Swimwear and Sharleen Ernster of Hot-As-Hell
To our absolute surprise (and delight), Miami Swim Week 2016 was all about working moms and their super cute kids, with designer mamas Tori Praver and Sharleen Ernster leading the way. In addition to celebrating her 10th year showing her collection at Miami Swim Week, Praver shared some incredibly adorable moments with her husband, her daughter and her son while living our dream life (i.e., daily SoulCycle, green juice, avocado toast and ocean views) at the penthouse of the 1 Homes South Beach. Meanwhile, Ernster kicked some serious butt with the debut of her second collection for Hot-As-Hell and the first-ever children collection, Hot-As-Halo. Hot-As-Hell’s Miami Swim Week 2015 show took us for a walk on the wild side. This year, it gave us all the feels thanks to the show’s mommy (and mommy-to-be) models and their mini-me’s, including Ernster and her two beautiful daughters.

5. “HEALTHY” Rooftop Party Launch hosted by MIKOH Swimwear at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach
Exhausted from a general lack of food, sleep, and “me” time, Miami Swim Week goers need nothing more than a relaxing day by the pool as the weekend comes to a close. The 1 Hotel delivered just that with the launch of their “HEALTHY” Sunday rooftop pool party series on July 17. Fresh cocktails, juices, and bites, accompanied by the sounds of DJ Hannah Bronfman, was just what the doctor ordered to recover from a long week.

Conceived and created by Island City Stage Artistic Director Andy Rogow and City Theatre Director John Manzelli, Shorts Gone Wild 4: Decision 2016 takes six actors, seven playwrights, five directors and a design team, and whips them up into seven short, provocative, funny and thoroughly entertaining plays that are relevant to the LGBT and Progressive communities. This season’s line-up features a hilarious, edgy and politically-themed selection of brand new, never performed ten-minute plays penned by nationally recognized playwrights (many of whom are local to South Florida) that are guaranteed to be “YUGE!”

Read to Learn Books for Free Distributes Over 100,000 Books

at the Read to Learn bookshelfPRESS RELEASE

CHILDREN COLLECT THOUSANDS OF BOOKS FOR COMMUNITY
From the beginning of the 2015 school year to the present, Read to Learn Books for Free has distributed over 113,307 books to the children of our community.

Read to Learn Books for Free works on two community-based levels: young children are able to select books for free from 40 bookshelves found in a variety of locations around the county, such as juvenile court to community service offices, clinics, park and community centers. Because the books fly off the shelves, they are restocked weekly. To meet the demand of stocking 3,500 books per week, children’s books are always being collected.

To donate books, visit www.MiamiBookFair.com to find a Read to Learn Books for Free donation bin closest to you.

During the past year, our community has truly come together to share the love of reading by providing children from our community the opportunity to select and keep free books from the Read to Learn Books for Free bookshelves. These books have been provided by so many others in our community via book drives, special events and personal donations. Read to Learn Books for Free, a literacy initiative sponsored by Miami Book Fair and The Children’s Trust, has been diligently collecting books to insure that all kids in our community have free access to books, and to the joy and adventure of walking through windows and doors made possible by reading.

Read to Learn Books for Free would like to say thank you to the children of Temple Beth Am, Ponce de Leon Middle, Cushman, Southwest Miami High, Casa Dei Bambini Montessori, Palmetto Elementary, Gulliver Academy, Carver Middle, Palmer Trinity, Leewood K-8 Center, and Glades Middle School, who together have collected over 6,000 books during the 2015-16 school year.

Read to Learn for FREESpecial thanks to Limmud Miami who, during a one-day book drive, collected 285 children’s books; to the members of the Jack & Jill Club who collected 231 books; to Ponce de Leon Middle school student Braulio Gonzalez and Librarian Mercy Mont-Ros for collecting 1,717 books; and to Anjana Mishra, who along with her two children Shreeya and Shaunak of Palmer Trinity and Leewood K-8, have since 2014 collected 5000+ books. Hats off to Etta Gold, Librarian for Temple Beth Am for collecting over 580 books in just a couple of months, and much gratitude to Miami-Dade County Public Schools for its donation of almost 4,000 books from its warehouse.

Much appreciation goes out to the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, a women’s fraternity, who received a $1,000 grant from the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation. With that money, Read to Learn Books for Free was able to purchase 236 bilingual books in Spanish and French. Said Kirstie Bray, “Because the goal of the Foundation is to partner with alumnae chapters to support projects that support the Fraternity’s educational and philanthropic efforts, we felt that Read to Learn Books for Free would make a good service project for our alumnae chapter.”

Read to Lean Books for Free is so grateful to Publix Supermarkets and TD Bank for their donations: the staff of Publix collected over 9,000 books for their drive, and TD Bank donated over 6,000 books purchased from First Book. We are continuously thankful to a variety of organizations for hosting on-going books drives: to Miami-Dade Public Library for collecting more than 5,600 books; to the City of Coral Gables for spearheading an on-going book drive and thus far collecting over 700 books at the Coral Gables Youth Center; to the Miami-Dade Police Department for collecting 400+ books; and, to Florida Memorial University for collecting almost 400 books.

R2LB4F thanks Kappa Alpha Theta for all these books!

Photographs of 6 Shore Road The Beach to Bar Party by Bob Quesada

During Swim Week we were invited to the Beach to Bar Party, the launch of the limited edition swimsuit collaboration between 6 Shore Road & Jose Cuervo Ready to Drink Margaritas poolside at The Faena Hotel – Miami Beach.

The 6 Shore Road collection by designer Pooja Kharbanda, who is an industry leader in swimwear & women’s apparel, was inspired by lazy beach days. 6 Shore Road captures the spirit of carefree days amongst friends. Intended for sipping champagne at the bar and dancing as the sun goes down, the effortlessly sexy styles easily transition from day to night.

The authentic Cuervo Margaritas, made exclusively with Cuervo Gold, are the world’s number one ready-to-serve margaritas and come in six flavors: classic lime, strawberry lime, mango, watermelon, grapefruit-tangerine, and coconut-pineapple.

For those of us who count calories, the Authentic Cuervo Light Margaritas offer the same great taste as the original, but they have fewer than 95 calories per serving. These no-guilt margaritas come in three flavors: classic lime, wild berry, and white peach.

We sipped as many flavors as we could (responsibly, of course) and they all tasted great!

Transport yourself to a world of gritty Miami pride; a blend of old school 305 and in-your-face art experiences as Secret Garden presents a 5 Year celebration for Mr. Nice Guy Records.

When we found out that his label, Mr. Nice Guy Records, was ready to celebrate its 5th birthday, we jumped at the opportunity to help Jesse Perez, the label’s owner, recreate the Miami he’s known for embracing. Recalling those days that Jesse spent in the ‘90s grinding on chongitas to Miami booty-bass music at backyard jams, we aim to transport you into a world of gritty Miami pride; a blend of Jesse’s old school 305 and the in-your-face art experiences that Secret Garden has brought to Wynwood.

Mr. Nice Guy Records is a smooth-yet-dirty coalescence of old school ‘90s hip hop and glorified Miami sleaze with a touch of funk. For the past five years, they’ve been pushing bass-infused, ass-clapping music, successfully exporting an entire Miamian party culture to international dance floors. This label has given birth to an impressive cast of top DJs, including Sex Sells, Mika Materazzi, Dakap, and of course, Jesse “El Sucio” Perez himself.

Get schooled in the art of graffiti and breakdancing in an immersive interactive experience. Beats and bass will be flying, and booties will be bouncing to the sounds of Mr. Nice Guy Records’ crew at a soon to be announced location in our very backyard, Wynwood. In a tribute to Hialeah house party traditions, expect red cups, complimentary croquetas and pastelitos-without the abuelitas-and a whole lot of bumping ‘n’ grinding.

Its only a Secret… if you keep it!

Event is strictly 21+.

John Maxwell stated “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Aspiring leaders can learn the principal of leadership by developing the confidence to show “others the way” through dance. In the same token, a good follow expresses the ability to be a great team member, thus swing dancing is an excellent tool to teach youth the life skills of leading self, communicating with others, and learning the balance of power and influence. In fact, life is not about getting to a certain place on the floor, it’s enjoying the steps and interactions of others along the way!

“Teaching Leadership Through Swing Dance” is a workshop conducted in partnership with South Florida Lindy Collective and The University of Florida/IFAS Miami-Dade 4-H Youth Development Program.

On View July 30, 2016 – September 2016

Girls’ Club presents an exhibition of recent collages from T.J. Ahearn, inspired by and created on vintage LP vinyl record albums from the 60s and 70s, in the Annex Space. Gallery hours are by appointment only during August 2016.

The music spanning the 60s and 70s represents a dynamic shift in the cultural strata of western civilization and beyond. Rock ‘n Roll the prevailing musical genre signifying that era remains embedded in our contemporary society — to the point of banality as it is often co-opted for TV advertising and mass media.

The evocative, imaginary scenes in TJ Ahearn’s works are ignited by the spark of the music’s intent and flavor– reflections on concepts of Utopianism, sexual liberation, spirituality, ecology, war resistance and other themes that continue to be relevant today.

A limited edition series of prints from Ahearn’s unique collages, published by Girls’ Club will be available for sale in conjunction with the exhibition.

Pre-order information available soon!

During the opening reception, on Saturday, July 30th, at 7pm, South Florida-based band Pocket of Lollipops will perform inside the gallery to kick off the exhibition.

Made of wife and husband team of Maitejosune Urrechaga and Tony Kapel, Pocket of Lollipops will swirl together a mind melding indie rock frenzy leaving the listener with a dizzying, organic sound and taking the audience to another dimension, far off into the past or future.

“The duo has been instrumental in merging South Florida’s stuffy art scene with a spunkier, all-fun, no-gloom attitude. The aural results are an art-punk, danceable, no wave sound that glistens in the diabetic saccharine glory of power-pop.”

-Abel Folgar, New Times Broward Palm Beach

Editions of the band’s LP album Broken Balloon, with cover art by TJ Ahearn, will be available for sale.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Moving Art ATL: Miami Edition on 7/9/16

“Not all art hangs on a wall. Sometimes, it moves. And in especially exciting instances, art happens live and in person. Moving Art ATL decided to explore this concept further back in the spring of 2015, fusing yoga and art. And now, the Georgia collective is bringing it to Miami with a few more—shall we say—moving parts. In addition to yoga, Moving Art ATL: Miami Edition, the organization’s fifth regional edition, also includes live body painting and performance art. Yogis, athletes, body painters, dancers, artistic vendors, and more share the commonalities of their individualized expression while DJ Empress Rah provides the soundtrack. Come to stretch your body and mind. Moving Art ATL’s Miami Edition takes place at the Wynwood Warehouse Project (450 NW 27th Ave., Miami) this Saturday at 8 p.m.” – Miami New Times
