Proxy Selves: a fast-paced, prompt-driven writing workshop with Girls’ Club writer in residence Jan Becker

$20 registration

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
– Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer.
Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process.

Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Yo Miami and artist Kareem David Piper are pleased to announce the opening reception for “Metaxy and the Magic City.” Concrete Beach Brewery will be providing refreshments for the opening and closing receptions, occurring respectively on May 21st, 2016 and July 21st 2016. Music will be by Kwesi Kris. Kareem’s work reflects the contemporary human condition of existing in a transient state. His work questions the true depth of these relationships created with people and places which are encountered only in passing. They evoke a feeling of internal splitting or dislocation, and force the viewer to question how they perceive their own reality. This body of work reflects Piper’s feelings and perceptions of various social settings and transient scenes he encounters on a daily basis while living in Miami. The depicted images are sourced from photos the artist has taken while riding the Miami Dade Metrorail. The Metrorail is very close to the artist’s studio, and is itself very symbolic of the transient state that exists here in Miami. This exhibition serves as a celebration and validation of the Master of Fine Art in painting degree he will be receiving this year from MIU. His studio can be found in downtown Miami at 500 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132 and is available for visits by appointment only.

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

Good For You Gelato at VIXI in Coral Gables

For VIXI owner Melissa Stam, gelato is in her roots. Stam’s great grandfather, Giovanni Rattazzi, opened a gelato parlor in his home city of Genoa in 1865 and her shared passion for gelato inspired her to open Coral Gables’ gelateria VIXI more than a century later.

VIXI proudly boasts a large selection of authentic and healthy Italian gelato made without any artificial flavorings, colorings or additives, using only fresh natural ingredients. Flavors run the gamut from traditional varieties like chocolate, vanilla and hazelnut, to the more funky like parmesan cheese and pesto with basil sauce flavored gelato. Lactose-free sorbets are also available.

Curious to know what the difference is between gelato and ice cream? And how exactly it gets its intense smooth flavor? Check out the video above to find out that and more.

Step back in time for a vintage-inspired cultural immersion at Swyngwood in Miami’s cultural arts epicenter, Wynwood on May 20, 2016. Swyngwood’s mission is to inspire social change by bringing people together for deeper human connections through vintage swing dance and its culture.

In the 1940s, segregation was commonplace, but several Historians credit swing dance and music for leading the way to integration, bridging the gaps between communities. South Florida Lindy Collective (SFLC) aims to bridge gaps that continue to exist today. Swing dance instruction will encourage attendees to meet their neighbors, rotate partners, and make new friends to build a stronger sense of community.

Also on Swyngwood’s jam-packed agenda:
– The Pitbull of Blues Band performing rockabilly and blues to keep the party hopping.
– Burlesque performances by Miss Jenna Beth and Candy Muldune showcasing the class and sass of yesteryear.
– View Swyngwood’s Inaugural Rat Rod Car Exhibition, curated by Russ G Events and Miami Movie Cars
– Try our signature Swyngwood Ale or O.G., carefully crafted by Infected Brewery*

– Vintage fashion and treasures available from the LA Boudoir’s pop-up shop.*
– Photography sessions with Erika Nelly Photography, Pin-Up Photographer featured in Delicious Dolls Magazine, Teased Pin Up Magazine, and Vintage Affair Magazine.*

TALDE Miami Beach hosts another themed brunch day party on Saturday, May 14 with an authentic Jamaican dance hall theme

This Saturday, May 14, Brunch Life at TALDE Miami Beach is back in full force with Caribbean vibes for the third installment of the monthly musically themed brunch series. This month’s brunch, Buju Brunchton Jamaican BBQ, will be the first of the series to incorporate an all you can drink option ($30 per person), because what’s a Caribbean destination without bottomless Cool Rummings Punch, Tropical Bellinis and PBR to boot?!

As for the food, guests will indulge in an all you can eat Jerk Bar ($30 per person) including jerked chicken, pork, whole fish, shrimp, curried mushrooms, rice and beans, callaloo and coconut milk roti. As usual, Dale Talde will party alongside guests and DJ Andres Amadeus, who will be spinning Caribbean and reggae tunes. Once guests are finished eating, they’re invited to the lounge area of TALDE Miami Beach for a Jamaican dancehall-type experience. The rules for Buju Brunchton Jamaican BBQ: get weird, real weird.

Reservations are requested; guests may call (786) 605-4094 or visit taldemiamibeach.com. And, check us out on Instagram: @taldemiamibeach. TALDE Miami Beach is located at 4041 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33140.

Whether you are a young professional just entering the workforce, or someone more seasoned and ready for retirement, we can all agree on one thing, BULLYING HURTS and it has a lifetime effect on everyone involved! This is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of teens by connecting with other professionals and networking for a good cause.

**Please Note**

You may donate to a team to help raise money even if you’re not able to attend by simply clicking “Donate” instead of “Join”. All donors will be prompted to create a free account, and even if you’re not attending it will ask for your shirt size. If we have any left over shirts you might receive a surprise in the mail.

Your donation will help cover the cost of housing, meals, t-shirts, and tuition for at-risk and low income students to attend PALS; a 10-day leadership conference for students who commit to being upstanders instead of bystanders when it comes to bullying and harassment. Whether students are looking to expand their leadership and social skills, learn peer mediation, enhance their public speaking and job interviewing ability, learn to write an impactful resume or to simply develop conflict resolution skills, PALS is here to help students obtain all of those skills in a safe space among a diverse group of their peers. More importantly, all students will practice showing empathy, tolerance, and respect for others.

Miami, Florida 33130
RSVP / Register
Cost: General admission is $20 for gentlemen and complimentary for the ladies, please visit the box office upon arrival.

WHO: The crowd holds their breath, time is suspended in the moment and then it hits you… lights go up and details of your surroundings are fully illuminated for the first time: bronze touches, creamy tropical palettes, rich velvet accents, beautiful people in extravagant fabrics, clinking champagne glasses, and sparkling crystal chandeliers. Lights, sound, action! From Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Miami’s newly opened, buzz-worthy cabaret, El Tucán, draws the curtains on Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros for a weekend takeover launch.

The Havana-born Gerardo Contino, “El Abogado de la Salsa,” is a Cuban singer and songwriter. This former lead singer of the Cuban mega-group NG La Banda is a party onstage: he loves to improvise, pull the audience into call & response, and provoke fans into hip-shaking abandon. Since moving to New York City, Gerardo started his own band, “Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros,” with Axel Tosca Laugart, Luisito Quintero, and John Benitez. They released their debut album, Somos Latinos, in 2013 to very high critical acclaim. Together the two have toured all over the world, as well as in Gerardo’s new hometown, NYC.

WHAT: Offering a departure from the usually scheduled shows, “Weekend Takeovers” will bring to the stage an exciting, new concert series. El Tucan hopes to enlighten Miami by providing access to unique Latin American talent. Once a month, the weekend takeover will also bring great Cuban bands from New York to perform an exclusive 3 day residency.

Performing Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros will be the second installment of the weekend takeover. After a successful Weekend Takeover this past April by Chino Pons y Grupo Irek, another New York City cuban artist, the venue is excited to have Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros join them this month of May for the next 3 day residency.

“Once a month, we hope to give people the chance to catch something different, fresh and from another city. With this, we hope to highlight the best talent in town as well as showcase strong talent outside of Miami.” Quotes Emilia Menocal, Creative Director of El Tucan.

WHEN: Thursday, May 12 through May 14, 2016

RSVP: El Tucan has one live music and entertainment show on Thursday, and two seatings Friday through Saturday. First dinner seating offers availability at 8:00 pm and the second seating over the weekend is at 11:00 pm. Guest should arrive promptly and with all guests in attendance prior to being seated. There is a 15 minute maximum hold time for all table reservations. To request dinner reservations, please call 305-535-0065.

Dinner reservations are not required of all guests, and El Tucan invites guests to gather at the bar and general admission area to enjoy the show. General admission is $20 for gentlemen and complimentary for the ladies, please visit the box office upon arrival.

When we talk about civic engagement, problem solving, and the future of Miami, we hear the same two questions: where are the young people and who is engaging the next generation of leaders?

To help answer those questions, the New Leaders Council (NLC) Miami invites you to an evening of cocktails and celebration on June 9 from 6 PM to 10 PM at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove. Meet the 2016 fellows at our graduation and fundraiser and help us build a more civically engaged Miami!

NLC Miami is one of the premier chapters of a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to recruit, train, promote, and network the next generation of progressive social and political entrepreneurs. We bring a diverse group of rising stars together for a leadership institute that develops their practical skills, focuses their impact work goals, and connects them with local leaders in politics, government, business, education, the arts and sciences, and the nonprofit sector.

With your support, we can continue to plant the seeds for dynamic collaborations among people and organizations that would never have come together but for NLC. We want you to get to know our fellows (past and present) and we know you will be energized by the experience. It takes a village, and Miami is ours. Join us, celebrate, and help us build a community we are all a part of!

Tickets and sponsorship packages are available at a variety of levels. All tickets include open bar during the event (21+)! Take advantage of early bird pricing and purchase your tickets at this link: http://miami.newleaderscouncil.org/cmaddennewleaderscouncilorg/2016_fellows_fundraiser

Lina Bo Bardi: Together Exhibition 5/12/16, 7/29/16

In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. The furniture was cast using snowcrete with vermiculite aggregate, which was then hand-hammered to make a rough, gold flecked surface. The material palette and construction methodology learn directly from Lina Bo Bardi’s approach to making buildings, and the display of exhibition contents, without hierarchy, follows many of Lina’s own curatorial practices.

The exhibition is curated by Noemí Blager and presented by Arper. Major support to MCAD is provided by the Miami Design District and TWENTY TWO GROUP. Additional support is provided by Luminaire.

The cultural virus that has infected the city of Miami in the past decade has led to the rise of art-driven concepts and has drawn the attention of designers, architects, and overall creators from all corners of our globe, whose presence has helped in the development and enrichment of Miami’s cultural personality.

The Young Artist Initiative aims to celebrate and encourage this creative spirit by instilling “Renaissance” as the conceptual base of its next installation. All participating artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing the cultural rebirth occurring in the city of Miami and consider its effects and ramifications on the identity of our city. Their performances and installations will exist as reflections of their individual interpretations on the matter, expressed through each of their iconic aesthetics and methodologies.

We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflection of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists on Saturday, May 7th at Lou La Vie featuring Miami’s Micro Theater!

PRESS RELEASE
Date: April 29, 2015

Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar Announces Opening and Charity Program

primeCasa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar, is about to open in one of Miami’s most dynamic neighborhoods, where commerce and nightlife combine seamlessly. The 4,700 square foot location at the new Millicento tower, 1106 S Miami Ave Suite 202, is soon going to show the public what “sophisticated relaxation” really means. The term coined by owner-operators Jason Reznik and Ryan Leeds is actually a culture they developed at the first Boca Raton location. Very soon, Miami cigar enthusiasts, and active movers and shakers, will experience the Prime- lifestyle.

Prime Cigar’s first location set them apart as the premier cigar bar in South Florida. This second location will be in partnership with Altadis USA, one of the world’s top premium cigar manufacturers. In just two weeks, this one of kind cigar and whiskey lounge will officially open its doors to local VIPS, city officials, and special celebrity guests.

Knowing they were setting up shop in Miami’s business district, at Brickell’s newly built 1100 Millecento residential tower; Reznik and Leeds have upped the ante. Upon entering the very chic bar and lounge, to their walk-in humidor, lounge, private board room, private members lounge, custom furniture and elegant design elements, this location will speak to the individual wanting much, much more.

Prime Cigar is commitment to providing only the best for true cigar aficionados and power players, via a multitude of elements including: rare whiskeys, craft cocktails, premium and vintage cigars. Not stopping there, Ryan Leeds and Jason Reznik have committed to the community they are now in. The duo is proud to announce their community partnership program which will launch with their multi-day grand opening this May.

Commencing with the grand opening, Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar and Lifestyle Lounge will partner up with, and support twelve local charitable organizations as a way to give back to the South Florida community that has helped them since they began the Prime Cigar brand. They carefully selected organizations that need support, local awareness and strong local partners.

Some of the amazing foundations include: Neat Stuff for Kids, Easter Seals of South Florida, United Way, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Boys and Girls Club of Miami-Dade, Zoological Foundation, Miami Children’s Health Foundation, Children’s Home Society, Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, Latin Builder’s Association’s LBA Children and Families Foundation, St. Jude and Ronald McDonald House Charities’ of South Florida. The community partnership program will consist of awareness, driven directly via the marketing, promotional and publicity efforts by Casa De Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar, and its partners. This will include and not limited to fundraisers at the venue and product donations. They hope to inspire other neighboring locations, to embrace this program and launch similar efforts.

Ryan Leeds stated: “We are coming into a new [community], we want to support the needs of local organizations. We understand we must do our part in supporting those around us as well. Our hope is to create amazing relationships that will make a difference.”

Dara Friedman was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and currently lives and works between Miami and Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

She is an internationally acclaimed, Miami-based artist who is best known for experimental, non-narrative works that deconstruct the techniques of conventional filmmaking. Using the camera lens as an extension of her eye and body, Friedman strives for a heightened sense of subjectivity, distilling individual moments in time down to their emotional essence.

Artists in Action! is a 4-part presentation series at Girls’ Club, where prominent local artists offer a glimpse into their unique methods of artmaking. Chosen from the current exhibition Self-Proliferation, the 4 presenting artists work with diverse media, employing various printing and proliferation techniques to carry their message. Artists will share their inspirations, career paths and ah hah! moments with the public.

At each event, Girls’ Club will release a limited edition multiple for sale, under $100. This is an opportunity for budding art collectors to own one copy of a signed, limited edition work, published by Girls’ Club.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is excited to present the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 8:00 PM. This is the first appearance in South Florida for this international star guitarist. The concert takes place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 students with I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online at southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

One of the most influential jazz guitarists of his generation, Kurt Rosenwinkel, who recently returned full-time to the US from his academic position in Europe, brings a unique approach to composition and interplay typically with magnificent sidemen, as will be the case for this appearance, his first in South Florida.

Mr. Rosenwinkel was trained at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and immediately hired by Gary Burton, who has a penchant for discovering the most important guitarists for more than 40 years. He has devoted thousands of hours refining a techniques and conception that a huge number of young guitarists now regard as definitive. Kurt played in several cutting-edge bands in addition to becoming a successful leader.

Added to his prowess as a player, he is a gifted composer and arranger and has surrounded himself with like-minded collaborators, especially pianist Aaron Parks.

ARTISTIC PERSONNEL
Kurt Rosenwinkel – guitar
Aaron Parks – piano
Eric Revis – acoustic bass
Nasheet Waits – drums

Marina, orphaned daughter of a merchant captain, awaits the return of Jorge, the man who took her in after her father’s death. She is in love with him, but as he is older and her guardian, she has never dared tell him the truth
Another ship’s captain Alberto, Teresa’s father and a friend of Marina’s, tells the girls he is sailing away that evening. Marina asks him to give her a letter he had kept from her father, which she would like to have as a memento. Alberto gladly agrees, but their fond farewells are misinterpreted by Marina’s jealous suitor, the ships’ fitter Pascual, who considers himself virtually engaged to her Pascual tells her roughly that his clumsy ways stop him expressing his love for her. In exasperation she tells Pascual to ask her guardian for her hand – if Jorge agrees, then she will marry him. As Jorge returns, Pascual loses no time in telling Jorge that he intends to get married, and the older man heartily tells him that he has had the same thought, so why don’t they marry on the same day. Pascual names Marina, to Jorge’s shock and consternation. Marina is equally hurt that Jorge apparently wants to marry someone else.
Pascual intercepts a sailor bringing the letter from Alberto to Marina, and seeing it is a declaration of eternal love, he leaps to the obvious conclusion, denounces Marina bluntly, breaks off the engagement and rushes away cursing into the night.
As he leaves Jorge appears, and soon understands Pascual’s mistake and the innocent identity of the letter writer. When he hints he will be leaving tomorrow, Marina can no longer avoid telling him the identity of the man she really loves, and in a brief duet they admit their love for one another.
