Global sea levels have risen about eight inches in the twentieth century. The rate of annual rise has doubled in the past few decades and estimates are that sea levels could rise one to six feet by the end of the century. Efforts are underway to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities and prepare them for the adverse impacts of short- and long-term flooding. Not as much attention, however, has been given to protecting heritage resources or preparing for their loss. This presentation examines the threat of sea level rise to historic cities and cultural resources and explores strategies for adaptation or mitigation.

BEACONS: BY JOÃO ENXUTO AND ERICA LOVE

Opening April 13 at the ArtCenter/South Florida, New York-based artists João Enxuto and Erica Love’s institutionally-focused work forms the basis of their new show “Beacons.” The exhibition builds upon their continued interest in the role technology plays in mediating the power dynamics between institutions and their publics.

Running through June 19, 2016 at the ArtCenter’s Project 924 gallery, the exhibition features a 15- minute video Institute for Southern Contemporary Art (ISCA): a proposal for an institution that utilizes an algorithm to analyze the contemporary art market in order to automate a production plan to create the means for artists to work otherwise. This strategy outlines the way in which artists can successfully make inroads into the global art market. The video—with scenes shot in Atlanta and in Miami Beach—sets up the framework for the exhibition where viewers can expect to engage with the gallery as a system of objects, artworks, and sensors––relaying both the signal and noise of data monitoring.

Lecture Series Created to honor Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin
Temple Israel to host Professor Joseph Epstein

April 2016/Miami, FL/– Temple Israel of Greater Miami will welcome Professor Joseph Epstein who will kick off the inaugural lecture for the Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin Memorial Lecture Series on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 4pm. The topic of the inaugural lecture is Jewish humor. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Epstein is an essayist, short story writer, and editor. The author of more than 20 books, he was a lecturer at Northwestern University from 1974 to 2002 and is an Emeritus Lecturer of English there.

He is a contributing editor at The Weekly Standard and a long-time contributor of essays and short stories to The New Criterion and Commentary. In 2003, he was awarded a National Humanities Medal by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He originated the Enter Laughing feature which examines Jewish humor. William F. Buckley once wrote that he is “the wittiest” essayist alive.

This lecture is being underwritten by the Halperin families who created this lecture series to honor and remember their parents; Dr. Bernard Halperin and Jeanette Gordon Halperin.

“I have vivid memories of their passionate discussions about, among other things, Jewish culture, politics, movies, and books. Quite often, the most compelling lessons my parents taught me were sugar-coated with laughter,” said son Keith Halperin. “My siblings and I wanted to remember their love of laughter, and with Joe Epstein’s wit and wisdom, we could think of no better guest speaker to kick of this lecture series.”

Additional lectures will be planned in the future.

About Temple Israel of Greater Miami:

Founded in 1922 and located just north of Miami’s downtown business district, Temple Israel is Miami’s oldest Reform congregation.

In Racing Extinction, a team of artists and activists exposes the hidden world of extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way we see the planet. Two worlds drive extinction across the globe, potentially resulting in the loss of half of all species. The international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years. And the other surrounds us, hiding in plain sight — a world that the oil and gas companies don’t want the rest of us to see. Using covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, the Racing Extinction team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it. Wood art has a long history that can be traced to ancient cultures through mythology and folklore. It would appear that man has always had an ambiguous relationship with trees and wood. Worshipped for perceived magical powers, and revered for its strength and beauty this age old element is perhaps one of the oldest mediums used for artistic expression.

Today contemporary artists continue to work with wood but with a different using materials that are local and reclaimed artists explore the unique characteristics of wood pushing the boundaries to incorporate the authentic nature of wood in a new visual language that is fresh, bold and confident.

The exhibit, Knock on Wood includes panel paintings, intriguing sculptures with subliminal forms, and exhilarating installations juxtaposed to underscore the strength, beauty and sensual nature of wood.

Traditionally, a fifth anniversary is celebrated with a gift made of wood. One of the longest-running ballroom dance competitions in the United States, The Grand National Championships is celebrating its 46th year. The 2016 event is sure to be South Florida’s most “gala” ballroom dance extravaganza ever with more than 500 of the top professional and amateur dancers from across the country gathering to compete.

In addition to its 45-year tradition of bringing together amateur and Pro-Am competitors to vie for the title of Grand National Champion, this year’s competition will feature the 2016 World Professional Ten Dance Ballroom Championship. The top-ranked professional couples from around the World will compete for this most prestigious title – World Champion.

For an unprecedented second year in a row, authorized and sanctioned under the auspices of the World Dance Council (WDC) and the National Dance Council of America (NDCA), the competition is organized by Peter & Cassandra Schneider, in conjunction with the 46th Grand National Dancesport Championships, one of the longest running Dancesport Championships in the USA. Only three times before in the history of the World Professional Ten Dance Championships has the USA been honored to host these outstanding dancers from around the world!

The venue of the Ritz-Carton is an idyllic location, close to Miami International Airport, yet a world apart on its own tropical island paradise. Cassandra Schneider, Executive Secretary of the National Dance Council of America and former United States Amateur Champion, together with Peter Schneider, former Bavarian Latin Champion, and together World Exhibition finalists, will host this most prestigious event. With the support of their amazing staff at their company, Dance America, Inc., they work assiduously to guarantee the event will be one that the city, state, and country will be proud of.

In addition to the World Professional Championship, there are a multitude of other Open and Closed Championships—in all divisions from Professional, Amateur, Pro-Am, Senior, and Junior—beginning Thursday October 20th and culminating in the crowning of the Professional World Champions on Saturday evening, October 22nd, 2016.

More than 20 countries will be represented at the competition. A legendary panel of adjudicators—from USA, Scotland, Italy, England, Germany, Austria, Norway, Russia, and Canada—will be present, many of them former World Champions themselves, to officiate and determine the Champions of the most physically difficult event in the World.

Ten-Dance Championships encompass the five International Standard dances: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, and the five International Latin Dances: Cha Cha, Samba Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive. Couples in this Ten-Dance division must be masters of not only one division, Latin or Standard, but they must be unsurpassed in quality and artistry in all ten dances, making this one of the most difficult divisions in the world of dance.

Competitors will be announced one month prior to the event as their nominations from their respective countries are received.

Representing the voices of thousands of participants in hundreds of meetings over three years of development, the Miami-Dade County Parks and Open Space Masterplan addresses the interconnectedness of life, and the potential for parks to provide an infrastructure that builds individual, community, and ecological resiliency and well-being. The drawings illustrate a shared vision for an integrated system of great parks and public spaces, natural and cultural areas, all linked across the region through greenways, waterways, complete streets and sidewalks. Three fundamentals guide the plan:
• Placemaking – creating dynamic, resilient communities for all people
• Health and Fitness – enhancing individual, family, and community health and well-being
• Conservation and Stewardship – protecting open space, connecting children to nature, developing park stewards, and advancing conservation
Most importantly, the plan establishes a process of inquiry designed to support ongoing exploration to address the challenges and opportunities of the future, while preserving the significant ecological and cultural legacy of one America’s largest and most diverse park systems.

This classy music venue—former home to dance clubs Power and Glo—has the fairly dubious distinction of being located next door to a Western Beef supermarket. But indoors, the spartan 700-person-capacity space distinguishes itself with exposed beams, lounge-worthy lighting, and a column-free main floor with great sight lines from both the wide downstairs area and the carpeted balcony. (When seats are added to both levels, the place maxes the lookout.) Bookings are consciously eclectic, but overall reflect the evolved vibe of the neighborhood with bling- and controversy-free hip-hop acts, mellow songstresses, and veteran critical darlings.

Miami based hip-hop artist and wordsmith Nick Grammar will be bringing his MC skills to the Sunday School Festival at Sidebar, Miami. Grammar will be one of six artists opening the show for Rakim, a highly regarded figure in the hip-hop culture.
Nick Grammar is a man of many talents and he will be putting his MC skills on display Sunday, April 17th at the Sunday School Festival at Sidebar. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and the event ends at 12:00 a.m. ( midnight.)

Suffice to say he is not a man of few words. In fact, Nick Grammar has a lot to say and he articulates it with the discipline, focus and precision of a sensei warrior. Grammar’s ability to master the language of hip-hop and rap verbiage comes from his love of the music and a desire to dispel any and all myths about this particular music art form. Rap and hip-hop for many years had the reputation of having come from street performers who forewent the benefit of higher education to pursue a life in the world of music. Grammar’s illuminating performances prove that particular line of thinking to be false and that it takes a lot more than just hanging out on the corner to carve out a successful career in music or any profession a person may choose as their life’s work.

“Having the opportunity to leave a footprint is important to me. The contribution I would like to make to Hip-Hop is conveying the significance of originality in one’s music and style, reminding people that hip-hop is the culture and rap is the musical and lyrical art form born out of that culture,” said Grammar. Nick’s dedication and hard work ethics are a mainstay of his life and play a big role in why he has been able to realize many of his goals and see them come to fruition. “I do not let a day go by without giving thanks and then I proceed with the work at hand,” said Grammar.

When asked how he felt about opening for Rakim, who is regarded as one of the most influential and skilled MC’s of all time, Grammar was quoted as saying, “I’m excited. Rakim represents the foundation for lyricism in hip-hop content and style. It was Rakim who brought the microphone to the frontline of the stage show.” Music has always been at the forefront of Nick Grammar’s goals, and yet, it is just one of the many pursuits he has excelled in. Grammar is also a mixed martial artist with distinction, a Golden Gloves champion and holds a black belt in Brazilian Ju-jitsu. He is currently on tap to open O2 Bar – a fitness and nutrition center in the Miami area. Opening O2 Bar may arguably be one of the best and most auspicious endeavors to date, for Grammar. Having risen above great odds with a life that has been as storied as the imagination would allow, at present, it would be fair to say that Nick Grammar is a man whose time has come.

To help Challenge participants with the planning, writing, and execution of their projects, The Miami Foundation will host a series of public workshops with Urban Impact Lab and Design Thinking Miami.

For more information and to submit an idea, visit ideas.ourmiami.org. To schedule interviews or discuss the Challenge with The Miami Foundation, please contact Meieli Sawyer at 305-668-0070 or msawyer@weinbachgroup.com.

for the fourth year in a row, The Miami Foundation is launching the Public Space Challenge, a contest for ideas that create, improve or activate local gathering places like parks, playgrounds, sidewalks, basketball courts and plazas in Greater Miami. The Foundation invests $305,000 to make the top ideas a reality. Health Foundation of South Florida will support winning ideas increasing access to fresh food and healthy lifestyles; the Office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Juan C. Zapata will support ideas in West End. Anyone can submit and idea – individuals, groups, public agencies, nonprofits, private companies – at ideas.ourmiami.org from March 15th through April 21st.

“The success of Greater Miami’s exponential growth depends on our ability to develop and enhance the spaces that keep us connected as a community,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “Residents strongly supported our advocacy push to help increase the county and city parks budgets last year. That energy, plus excitement around catalytic parks like Underline and Ludlam Trail, prove that this community is fervently demanding activated, safe and beautiful open gathering places. The Challenge puts the power in residents’ hands to create these important spaces themselves.”

The Challenge has funded projects big and small from Homestead to Hialeah, Wynwood to Miami Gardens. Most of them are submitted by local residents committed to improving Greater Miami, like David Hazim, whose passion for disc golf led him to submit a winning idea to create a course in his neighborhood at Homestead Air Reserve Park. Dejha Carrington, a 2015 Challenge winner, sought to activate the Miami skyline as a place to unite the local community. She created a public art project on the side of the InterContinental Miami. The hotel’s 19-story digital wall lit up with original art moving in sync with contemporary, instrumental music streamed online for a community-wide experience. More than 1,000 ideas have been submitted and over $500,000 invested in winning ideas since the Challenge’s inception.

“This is a movement toward creating a county bursting with great public spaces – a county where every Miamian is a 10-minute walk from an urban retreat to share with their friends and neighbors,” said Stuart Kennedy, director of program strategy and innovation. “This year, we want to cast an even wider net, so we’re encouraging creativity to reimagine what local public spaces can be.”

Miami, FL.- Imago “Art in Action” is a new cultural space opening on April 6th in the heart of Coral Gables. More than just another gallery, Imago Art in Action create and introduce an all-in-one multipurpose concept of cultural space with a purpose of contributing to growth and human development through the promotion of visual and fine arts and literature and committed to making inspiring experiences out of artistic expressions.

Ever since Miami´s cultural life began booming, the city seems friendlier and more humane to this kind of initiatives. Made up by Marlene Lebrun, Juanita Antonorsi, Raúl Lira, Thais Marquina and Trina Oropeza; a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs specialized in many areas of arts and culture with more than 30 years of experience, which they´ve used to set the basis of this new cultural proposal.

This all-in-one space, designed for the growth and amusement of each as a unique and social individual, offers children and adults the possibility of enjoying art and literature while channeling talents and gaining knowledge, making it a great contribution to the city.

The center includes two areas from the world of arts -Visual Arts and Hispanic-American literature- into four vital spaces for its functioning: The Gallery, The Library, The Workshops and The Designer-Objects Store.

Imago Art in Action will offer a permanent programming where the community will be able to enjoy visual arts exhibitions, a small library and lecture room, gallery talks, cinema forums, classes, a store and special events designed for guest of all ages.

“ON” the opening exhibition.

“ON” has been established as the first exhibition which Imago “Art in Action” will use to formally open its cultural center; Marisela Chivico, who is responsible for the text, said: “When a new space that is allocated to disseminate culture and to facilitate the merging of reflection and enjoyment of art emerges, a light and a flame are turned on; and so we thought it favorable to name our first project “ON”.

Chivico points out that “the showing is comprised of ten Venezuelan artists linked to speeches engraved in a diversity of interests, all related to contemporary art, with proposals that address and answer to current dynamics and aesthetics” Harry Abend, Pedro Terán, Nadia Benatar, Sigfredo Chacón, Vicente Antonorsi, Patricia Van Dalen, Isabel Cisneros, Javier León, Paulo Castro and Rafael Rangel will show the best of their small formats in an exhibit beginning April 6th through the end of July.

Sprung! Spring Beer Festival 2016

This year’s Sprung! Spring Beer Festival had a new home: and old RC Cola Plant in Wynwood (Miami)! Sounds sexy, right? But it makes perfect sense with the craft beer boom in Wynwood. Wynwood Brewing is across the street and Concrete Beach and J. Wakefield Brewing are just a few blocks away. And after a super soggy and muddy Grovetoberfest a few months ago, it’s cool that this one changed venues to a concrete base!

My wife and I arrived promptly on time, one of my best virtues! First stops, J. Wakefield and Concrete Beach, right next to each other. And we hit Wynwood Brewing shortly after, duh, locals first! I was actually sporting about a month of unkempt beard and an unruly head of hair so I could fit in with the Wynwood brewers (along with MANY others). My wife hated that, so call it a sacrifice!

Along with the Wynwood favorites, lots of other local and Florida breweries were representing: MIA, Big Storm, Barrel of Monks, Hatuey, Coppertail to name a few. There were also dozens of awesome must stops at every beer festival. Founders, Green Flash (including that awesome Alpine Brewing), Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas (thanks to the girl there that helped me kill the Apple update out of nowhere), Saint Arnold and Sweetwater to name just a few.

Cooking and beer demos, a really nice lineup of food trucks (yum, roasted corn on the cob), fun games including one that reminded me of the sweeper arm in that show WipeOut, homebrewers, a fun band, and of course the VIP Area. For me, the VIP area compared to prior years was a little different. We thought (and overheard many similar remarks) that the food part was a bit of a letdown while the VIP beer offerings were a major upgrade. Think Black Ops and some rare sours and other specialty options, was great. And the VIP area also offered some shady relief on a super angry hot day!

We saw some old friends and made new ones. I also took pictures of some really cool t-shirts the attendees were wearing! Check those out and the photo album below. I’m definitely a fan of the new location too! A must drink Miami event! See you next year!

Proxy Selves: a fast-paced, prompt-driven writing workshop with Girls’ Club writer in residence Jan Becker

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
– Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer. Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process. Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Jan Becker, local writer and poet, has been selected as Girls’ Club 2015/2016 writer-in-residence. Becker will work collaboratively with Girls’ Club to present various public programs and contribute writings in conjunction with the exhibition Self-Proliferation, curated by Micaela Giovannotti.

Jan Becker was born in a small coal-mining town in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and subsequently grew up in a Marine Corps family on military bases all over the United States. She completed her BA in English, Creative Writing and Rhetoric with a concentration in Global Cultures at SUNY Binghamton, where she was awarded the Andrew Bergman Prize in Creative Writing, and the Alfred Bendixen Award for her creative honors thesis.

Annual Dr. Nelson L. Adams Walk A Mile With A Child Set for Saturday, April 16, 2016

The James Wilson Bridges Medical Society Inspires Kids And Looks To Raise Awareness About Health Disparities Impacting The South Florida Minority Community

In honor of National Minority Health Month, the National Medical Association (NMA), James Wilson Bridges, M.D. Medical Society (JWBMS), along with their title sponsor, Sunshine Health will host the annual Dr. Nelson L. Adams Walk a Mile With A Child on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. This is the 9th annual year that the event is taking place.

Overweight and obesity rates tend to be higher among African American children compared with White children, with obesity rates increasing faster at earlier ages and with higher rates of severe obesity. Approximately 60 percent of Florida’s overweight children have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

The walk will be followed by a pop-up health and wellness fair that will be held at Gibson Park (401 NW 12th St, Miami, FL 33136). Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in the fit clinic, face painting, games, family Zumba class, as well as learn ways to improve the health and well-being for the whole family.

NMA is a 121-year-old not-for-profit organization that represents the interests of over 40,000 African American physicians and the patients they serve. The JWBMS is the local arm of the NMA dedicated to fulfilling their mission to promote optimal health for communities of color.

“The health and wellness of Florida’s children should be our primary focus. There are many chronic conditions associated with obesity that are easily preventable with a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr. Nelson L. Adams, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Sunshine Health. “I am committed to raising awareness about this growing epidemic, and I look forward to working with our partner organizations to provide health education and resources to the community.”

The Walk A Mile through Historic Overtown hopes to encourage organizations and adults to serve as community mentors by walking with the children and inspiring them to keep their minds and bodies active.

“Community service drives our company’s culture,” said Chris Paterson, CEO of Sunshine Health. “We believe it is important to positively impact the lives of our members in the communities where they live. This important initiative was introduced to us by our Board Chairman, Dr. Adams, and Sunshine Health is proud to be a sponsor each year.”

“We would like to commend Dr. Nelson L. Adams and Walk a Mile with a Child for bringing attention to the health and wellness needs of African American children residing in Historic Overtown. “ Chairman Keon Hardemon, District 5, City of Miami.

“The primary focus of the 100 Black Men of South Florida is the intellectual and physical health and welfare of our children, says Stephen Johnson, President of 100 Black Men of South Florida. “It is therefore important to us, as men in the community, to walk with Dr. Adams and our children to promote healthy living through historic Overtown. We are proud to support this event”
Sponsors and community partners include: Sunshine Health, Wellmax Max Medical Center, 100 Black Men of South Florida, Sigma Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Just My Height Art Shows® brings fine art to young children’s eye level by displaying professional quality fine art at 36 inches high. Talking Off the Wall Magazine has been documenting the South Florida street-art scene for the past two years. These two organizations have joined forces to produce “Secret Doors,” a fine art show that will proudly feature 15 of South Florida’s best street artists and muralists to benefit ArtCares for Kids.

Sponsored by The Florida House Experience, VITAS Healthcare, Artist & Craftsman Supply, Aventura Mall and others, the show will feature family friendly street- and mural-style artwork.

The opening will feature games and hands-on art activities designed to engage patrons with the exhibits. Persons of all ages—from 2 to 102—are welcome to enjoy complementary light bites and age-appropriate beverages, including sponsored adult beverages provided by Peroni beer, with an open bar from 6 to 8 p.m., and a cash bar from 8 to 10 p.m.

With the increasing number of new digital technologies, is it a surprise that everything is being disrupted, most importantly distribution practices? Audience consumption habits are changing and we can argue that film distribution is shifting from a supply-led to a demand-led market.
There is also an abundance of content which is only matched by the complete accessibility to it, anytime, anywhere, the options are endless. There are no barriers to distribution, only to awareness and engagement. You need to allocate time and resources to engage people with your work. This is the workshop to help you learn how to independently distribute and be an entrepreneurial filmmaker.

Topics Will Include But Not Limited To:
– Armed with a good story and good storytelling skills, you should be able to profit if you know how to take responsibility for your creation, how do you do that?
– How to adapt to an ever-changing industry that requires great creativity as well as business savvy?
– How do you utilize the virtually endless avenues of self-distribution, like VODs, iTunes, YouTube, and Vimeo (just to name a few)?
– How do you create your own theatrical release or should you bypass it all together?

Meet our Speaker: Ricki Cikowski
Rick co-produced and edited the PGA Nominated, crowd-sourced, theatrical documentary Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and it can currently be seen on Netflix.

South Florida Jazz presents “Great Women in Music” 4/9/16

South Florida Jazz presents “Great Women in Music”

April-2016-emailRose & Alfred Mianiaci Performing Arts Center
3100 Ray Ferrero Blvd,
Davie, Florida 33314

Cost: $40

On April 9 at 8 PM, South Florida Jazz presents “Celebrating Great Women in Music,” starring Lynne Arriale, Carla Cook, and Grace Kelly, at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Boulevard in Dania, FL. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students with ID) at southfloridajazz.org or (954) 462-0222.

Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Joni Mitchell have established themselves as iconic performers and composers. The depth and authenticity of their music has profoundly influenced generations of musicians and touched audiences worldwide.

Pianist Lynne Arriale, vocalist Carla Cook and alto saxophonist/vocalist Grace Kelly have been moved and influenced by the strength and power of these legends. They celebrate these great women of jazz by sharing their unique reinterpretations of popular classics with passion, soul and sensitivity in a magical evening of empathetic collaboration. Joining them are bassist Evan Gregor and drummer Jordan Perlson.

These artists are highly innovative and original leaders. Lynne is an established star with worldwide status; she was the first prize winner of the 1993 International Great American Jazz Piano Competition, and soon launched her touring and recording career. “Lynne Arriale’s music lies at the synaptic intersection where brain meets heart, where body meets soul. As a result, there’s a directness, a purity, an unalloyed honesty that makes us listen and therefore “see” anew. She is one of jazzdom’s most intensely unique voices.” – JazzTimes

Carla Cook, from “Motown,” Detroit, is daring. She is a jazz singer/songwriter who sings standards beautifully — but she doesn’t stop there. Cook is willing to put a jazz spin on songs not written by traditional jazz composers. Songs that, until you hear her sing them, you’d never imagine could be interpreted as jazz. That willingness to simply sing what she loves is what gives Cook her signature style. “Carla Cook…a mad-loose straight ahead jazz diva with a gospel soul, big band heart, classical cool and improvisational hot …. and what a beautiful voice … a warm amber-hued contralto.” – JazzTimes

Bostonian Grace Kelly is a vivacious saxophone prodigy and composer with incredible polish for her tender age (23). She’s not looking to be like anyone else. “Got my own thing,” she sings over an urban, trance-like groove. Although the singer and saxophone player has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike as a jazz musician, her work shows an artist interested only in playing what she loves, labels be damned. “Grace Kelly plays with intelligence, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to adapt… the hallmark of a first-class jazz musician.” – Wynton Marsalis

Join Lynne, Carla and Grace for an evening of joyful interaction and musical spontaneity featuring modern jazz classics, reinvented popular favorites, and memorable original compositions.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by a grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

On the surface the Puccios look like most other families. But something sinister is lurking behind the closed doors of the Puccios’ home. Steely-eyed patriarch Arquimedes (Guillermo Francella), along with the help of his eldest son, have started a deadly family business that involves kidnapping members of wealthy families for ransom, and then swiftly disposing of victims after receiving the money. This stranger-than-fiction story is based on a series of real-life crimes that took place in Argentina in the 1980s.

Steak Brasil Churrascaria, the most authentic and enjoyable Brazilian restaurant in Downtown Miami, is announcing its anniversary celebration taking place on March 26th. For the past three years, the restaurant has brought entertainment and mouth-watering food to our plates, making us travel to Brazil without leaving the city of Miami. Many restaurants claim true authenticity in their food offerings, but Steak Brasil lets its customers do the talking. The restaurant prides itself in providing patrons an all-encompassing legitimate Brazilian experience by focusing on family, friendship and a love for tradition.

Jaciel Santos, owner of Steak Brasil, has worked in every possible aspect of the restaurant business for more than 12 years to finally craft together what he likes to call, “unique experience of proximity” to his native country. By emphasizing on little details, such as greeting customers with a welcoming and joyful “Bom Dia!” to hiring accomplished gauchos with over 20 years of experience preparing and serving according to Brazil’s richest traditions, Santos is showcasing to numerous customers the best parts of his culture.

“It was important for me to create a space where family and friends have the luxury to eat outside their home, yet still feel the comfort and ease of being at home,” said Santos. “I wanted more than a place where you go once a year to celebrate a big event, but instead a place that feels like the weekend visit to your favorite aunt’s house where you eat until your heart is content while talking and reconnecting.”

During the third anniversary celebration, the “passista” dancers will be presenting an impressive performance for all of our guests and the restaurant will be offering complementary Caipirihna tasting, the most popular and delicious cocktail in the country of Brazil, 2 for 1 drink specials and traditional sharing options like picanha, an assortment of sausages or cheeses that will awake your taste buds.

“The 3rd year anniversary of our restaurant serves as a testament of all of our staff’s hard work,” said Jaciel Santos “We plan to expand and open a second location very soon”

Celebrate with the Churrascaria the astonishing year it has been and transport to South America from your seat.

The City of Miami Beach presents Karina Iglesias & the Nu-Thang
featuring:
Brian Robertson, piano
James McCoy, bass
Brian Lange, drums

Finalist on NBC’s “The Voice,” Karina Iglesias brings her powerful vocals to Arts Garage Sept. 26. She will be accompanied by her “Nu-Thang,” featuring Brian Robertson, piano, James McCoy, bass, and Brian Lange, drums. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. Karina’s classically-trained voice unveils the nuances of her lyrics and adds layers of meaning and emotion that are more commonly found in operatic vocal performances. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias has showcased her strong elements of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

“I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly…, the light fixtures were just gonna explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”
(Adam Levine)

MDC Live Arts Offers a Mind-Bending Theater Experience
The Org Welcomes Back Cutting-Edge Chilean Theater Company Teatro Cinema

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts performing arts series presents the wildly inventive Chilean theater company, Teatro Cinema , at 8 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 16, at the Colony Theatre. The company will present Historia de Amor (Love Story), the final work in a trilogy on the subject of love, based on a graphic novel by Regis Jauffret.

The cutting-edge Teatro Cinema virtually escapes the confines of theater, using film technique, special effects, mirrors, digital imaging, and highly stylized sets to create the illusion of travelling through time and space. Live performers insert themselves into filmed and photographed backdrops and interact with illustrated stills and animations inspired by graphic novels, immersing audiences in the world that is being created.

In Historia de Amor, the company applies these techniques to tell a story that addresses the thin line between reason and madness, love and domination. An English teacher abducts a young woman and turns her into his victim, concubine and mother. He takes over her life in multiple ways, leaving her with no choice but to accept her situation and turn inward for solace. The comic-book aesthetic and black-and-white palette highlight the fragmented, solitary psyches of the woman and her captor with more nuance than theater or film alone could.

“The technical ingenuity in what they do is undeniably immense” -The Guardian

“I remain in awe of the company’s unparalleled creativity and technical prowess,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.”We are thrilled to welcome them back to Miami where they will surely influence future theater makers and audiences with their distinctive technique and style.”

Leading up to their performance, the Teatro Cinema company will offer a mullti-day workshop to Teatro Prometeo students at MDC Wolfson Campus. The residency will be an instensive look in to the company’s technique–from storyboarding to content to staging and direction.

ABOUT TEATRO CINEMA
Teatro Cinema was founded in 1987 by puppeteer Jaime Lorca, performer-designer Laura Pizarro, and writer-director Juan Carlos Zagal. They explain they chose their company’s original name “La Troppa” (The Troop) to suggest “a troop of artists marching across the demolished horizons of the cultural decay that our country had been pushed to.” The group toured extensively as La Troppa with El Santo Patrono (1987), Salmon-Voodoo (1988), Rap del Quijote (1989), Pinocchio (1991), Lobo (1992), Viaje al Centro de la Tierra (1995), Gemelos (1999), and Jesús Betz (2003). In 2005 it was renamed Teatrocinema to highlight the way its diverse artists unite theater and cinema. Historia de Amor is part of a trilogy that includes Sin Sangre (Without Blood, 2007) and El hombre que daba de beber a las mariposas (The Man Who Fed Butterflies, 2010), which toured to Lincoln Center Festival; Théâtre de la Ville and Odeón; Teatro San Martín, Buenos Aires; Piccolo Teatro, Milan; and festivals in Avignon, Bogotá, Berlin, Edinburgh, Guanajuato, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Vienna. Juan Carlos Zagal and Laura Pizarro were both born in Santiago and trained at the Catholic University of Chile. Zagal is director, performer, writer, and composer for Teatro Cinema. Pizarro was a performer, writer, and director for their work as La Troppa and is art director and designer for Teatro Cinema.

Erick Morillo:
With his A-list celebrity chums, astronomical bank balance and palatial homes in Miami, Ibiza and soon Los Angeles, few people epitomize the ‘superstar DJ’ like Erick Morillo. The organizers of the IMS music conference in Ibiza certainly thought so, inviting Erick to give a talk entitled ‘Big Dog DJs: Fuck You I’m Famous’ earlier this year.
“People definitely know my name, but I’ve worked hard to get here,” Erick says. “It’s not like I think people should bow before me because I’m some big star.”
Although, with his Subliminal Sessions nights at Pacha having enjoyed their 13th year (making Morillo the White Isle’s longest-serving resident DJ in 2010) Ibiza is already conquered. With a resurgent Subliminal Records churning out floor fillers by the month, two new albums – one solo and one with Jose Nunez and Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero as The Dronez – in production and a live show in the works, Morillo is now redoubling his campaign to take America. The next shot in which will be DJing at the opening of the exclusive Marquee club in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, appearing alongside Jay-Z and Coldplay.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Stealing Stares with Sequins in Vail

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-I-Love-Bowie-Chaser-Tank-Sequin-Skirt-Planet-Blue-Vail-6

It’s no surprise we love to travel but, during our most recent trip to Colorado, we realized one new reason why: traveling reminds us that Miami life is not normal. In Miami, no one bats an eye if you walk to the pharmacy with your booty hanging out. At the same time, no one questions if you walk out in a ball gown with full hair and make up to do the same. Miami lets you do you, boo boo. Few other places on this planet are magical like that—and, as we learned last week, Vail most certainly is not one of those places.

Around 2 weeks ago we were doing the zombie-like Instagram scroll when we came across a post by Chaser Brand featuring a David Bowie muscle tank from their collection and a sequin slit skirt from Planet Blue. It was one of those major outfits that once you see it you can’t not own so for the sake of our sanity and well-being we immediately bought both pieces. The David Bowie tank lasted a total of 3 hours following its arrival before we wore out for a run along the Miami Beach boardwalk, but we were saving the sequin skirt for a special occasion.

On our last night in Vail we had reservations to one of the top restaurants in Vail Village called La Tour. (If you’re ever in the area, make a reservation and order the lamb. You won’t regret it.) The whole affair screams special occasion, no? Well, we thought so. Alas, the skirt came out of its neat plastic bag and became the foundation to one of our more eclectic outfits, paired with the omnipresent David Bowie tank, our Forever 21 faux fur and our Aska Collection Trooper booties.

In wacky Miami, no one would have given us a second look but in conservative, Norwegian sweater-jeans-and-boots-wearing Vail we stood out like Björk at a priest convention. Regardless of whether the people we passed were throwing shade at the shiny sequins, its weather inappropriate thigh-high slit, or the entire look in all its non-conformist glory, the experience made us realize that the Miami aesthetic is not acceptable most places and appreciate that Miami is so open-minded. #ThankYouMiami for letting our freak flags fly or not…as long as we’re happy.

What do you think of this look? Would you have put it together? Where would you wear this outfit? What pieces would you substitute or add? Leave a comment below or send us a tweet @ThankYouMiami!

NEWS: #PodQuest – Radiotopia Launches Search For Podcasting’s Next Breakout Hit, March 17 – April 17. 2016

PRESS RELEASE

Radiotopia Launches #PodQuest, the Search For Podcasting’s Next Breakout Hit

podquestWith $10,000 and four months of mentorship, three finalists will vie for a spot in Radiotopia’s network of acclaimed story-driven podcasts.

Podcast show submissions can be sent via radiotopia.fm/podquest until the April 17, 2016 deadline.

Aiming to discover diverse new voices, introduce audiences to fresh talent, and explore what it takes to bring a podcast to life, the Radiotopia podcast network today launched Podquest, a competition that will give three finalists financial and professional support to develop a podcast for the story-driven network of acclaimed shows such as 99% Invisible, The Memory Palace, Criminal, Song Exploder, and The Mortified Podcast.

Podquest kicks off with a one-month open submission period, during which anyone can submit an original idea for a podcast. Ten semi-finalists will then be interviewed by the Podquest selection team, with three finalists receiving $10,000 (each) to produce pilot episodes for their proposed shows. Over the course of four months, these finalists will receive hands-on support for creating a sustainable podcast, as well as editorial and technical input from Radiotopia’s team of seasoned podcasting experts. At the end of the production phase, one winner will be selected to develop their idea into a full series for inclusion in Radiotopia in 2017. Throughout the Podquest process, 99 Radiotopia supporters will participate by weighing in on submissions and offering feedback on pilot episodes-in-progress.

To help in the development of their podcasting endeavors, all ten of the semi-finalists will also receive an array of professional support including $300, office hours with Radiotopia producers, free Hindenburg radio editing software, a free two-year PRX membership, and a year-long membership with the media talent network AIR.

“Radiotopia’s mission is to provide a powerful, supportive platform for podcasting’s boldest voices,” said Julie Shapiro, Executive Producer of Radiotopia. “Podquest will connect us with ambitious, emerging producers and bring their creative talents to audiences hungry for Radiotopia-style podcasts: shows that consistently showcase innovative, provocative and carefully crafted storytelling.”

Launched in 2014 by PRX, the award-winning public media company, Radiotopia has quickly become the leader in today’s audio storytelling renaissance and grown its roster of hit shows from seven to thirteen. In 2015, Radiotopia podcasts were downloaded more than 10 million times per month, nearly doubling their 5.7 million monthly downloads from 2014.

Podquest is one of a series of new initiatives funded by a $1 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that Radiotopia received in May 2015. Podquest is additionally supported by Hindenburg Systems and AIR.

For more information and to submit your idea, visit radiotopia.fm/podquest.

Listening to a song now is likely to involve digital innovation, similarly to when one rents an apartment, uses a car, or books a taxi. The music that used to be bought and owned is increasingly an ephemeral choice, ordered for limited periods when and as wanted.

Delivery, consumption, and creation changes have been constants of the music industry for decades. The evolutions have been from live to analog formats, to digital platforms such compact discs and copies, to full downloads, and most recently internet streaming. Each shift has altered the relation-ship and income split between delivery intermediaries and the artists.

Ubiquitous internet access coupled with smart phone and tablet sophistication now offer access that previously required premium services or a PC. What will be the next iteration of content delivery and distribution? Will it involve music only or incorporate other mediums? Which new delivery platforms will be developed? What role might big data play in target marketing and sales? Will it be easier for new or independent artists to obtain a market for their creations? Will new intellectual property ten-sions arise?

Explore these and other facets of Music on Demand with our moderators and participants at this interactive educational event sponsored by the MIT Enterprise Forum of South Florida. The registration and networking period starts at 6:30 PM. The discussion will begin at 7:30 PM.

Terra Group and The Related Group, the development team bringing the Park Grove community to the Coconut Grove neighborhood come 2018, gave back to its future community by sponsoring the kids at Coconut Grove Cares to an evening of fun and sports—over 100 of them.

The pre-construction development, which also happens to be the future home of a key figure from the Miami Heat, rented two buses and purchased over 100 tickets to bring the kids of Coconut Cares to watch the city’s most beloved team.

David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group and Cathy Strafaci, Director of Sales at Park Grove, gave the kids their tickets to the game at the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares, who, in turn, presented them with a big thank you card for taking them to the game.

The buses then shuttled the kids off to American Airlines Arena for the Heat game and returned them back to the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares following for their parents to then bring them home.

This is the first in a series of efforts for the future residency, Park Grove, to give back to its community.

Cordel is an abstract, intelligent dance that links themes of marginalization and social tensions of various cultures to show the universality of the human experience. Tango, Hip Hop and Cordel literature have a common thread in that all three art forms emerged from communities faced with poverty and inequality.
