The Big Serve is a philanthropic event presented by Jonathan Nussbaum, President of LaceClips, in an effort to provide 400 inner-city youth with access to the sport of tennis and engage the residents of Miami Beach with children in Greater Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, children from the four non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and partake in four stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and notable local celebrities, a tennis clinic with lessons from pro tennis players, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Fast Twitch and a concession station with drinks provided by Menin Hospitality and Icelandic Glacial and food provided by Shake Shack and David’s Café. DJ Irie will provide beats alongside the Miami Heat’s MC, Uptown Dale, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember.

The United States Tennis Association will organize and provide resources and follow-up locations where kids can play tennis after the event. Children will also receive a tote bag provided by Head with various items including tennis balls provided by Biscayne Tennis, a Head Tennis racquet, and a t-shirt provided by Jonathan Nussbaum and Becker & Poliakoff. All proceeds from the event will benefit Overtown Youth Center, Irie Foundation, Wade’s World Foundation and the Miami Beach Tennis Foundation. Other sponsors include Honey Shine Inc., World Red Eye, Menin Hospitality, City of Miami Beach, LaceClips, Fast Twitch, the Mourning Family Foundation, and Cox Media Group.

Lightning Has Struck Twice. Soul Legend Timmy Thomas, who serenaded the world in 1973 with his million-selling smash “Why Can’t We Live Together,” has conquered the world again. Thanks to Drake’s beyond-obvious sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his monster worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Timmy Thomas’ groove. 2016 will find Timmy Thomas releasing a string of singles on Overtown Records and one on Saustex Media, prior to his comeback album. His collaborators range from the late Steve Jobs to Timmy’s old hitmaking crew at TK records. They were recorded in the manner Soul Music deserves: Living and Breathing on analog tape – so it may be released on vinyl. Timmy Thomas famously sang “People Are Changing” on his first LP. The people may have changed, but their love of his soulful groove remains the same.

About the Bird Road Art Walk:
Five years strong, the Bird Road Art Walk continues to bring artists and collectors together. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, artists’ open their studios, along with alternative spaces and galleries that dot the industrial area along SW 74 Ave & SW 75 Ave.

The event features a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums ranging from photography to sculpture, mixed media, conceptual art, ceramics, drawing, painting etc… art and unique items for all tastes and budgets.

The Bird Road Art Walk is FREE & OPEN to the public.
The event is organized and funded by the Bird Road Art District, Inc., a non-profit volunteer based organization.

In 2011, Miami New Times ranked The Bird Road Art Walk as Miami’s Best Art Walk. Since then the Bird Road Art Walk has continued growing and has gotten even better. Visitors to the area will find a thriving community of artists who open their studios, alternative and creative spaces to the public every third Saturday.

The Bird Road Art Walk is organized by an alliance of artists founded in 2010. The member-powered organization promotes and funds experiences that bring artists, art enthusiasts and collectors together. Events include the monthly Bird Road Art Walk, which features open studios, alternative spaces and creative businesses.

Since the 1980s, the Bird Road Art Districts’ slanted warehouses, antique stores and overall industrial vibe have provided a haven for artists. The Florida International University Department of Architecture’s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This year’s runway is expected to showcase more than 50 outfits, all of which will be reusable. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for students in the FIU Department of Architecture.

The Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is hosted by Event Founder, Artistic Director, and FIU Architecture alumna Amira Ajlouni ’14 and Event Partner, Artistic Director, and current Architecture graduate student Jennifer Luis. The 3rd Annual Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is sponsored by the FIU Office of University Sustainability (Gold Sponsor), Berenblum Busch Architecture (Gold Sponsor), HKS (Bronze Sponsor), the FIU Department of Architecture, MIA Beer Company, and Dadeland Mall (Simon Malls). On Feb. 24, Knight Foundation’s second News Challenge on Libraries will open for applications. We will be offering applicants a chance to share winnings of $3 million for projects that answer the question: How might libraries serve 21st century information needs?

For centuries, libraries have been the keepers of public knowledge, spaces for human connection and educators for the next generations of learners. For this challenge, we hope to unearth new ways to advance libraries and their collaborators to meet the needs of their communities and carry these ideals into the future. T

The challenge will be open for applications from Feb. 24 to March 21. Anyone working in the U.S. on U.S. – based projects can apply, including public and private libraries, businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Projects have the chance to receive funding anywhere between $100,000 – $500,000 for a grant period of one to two years.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion: Exploring L.A. in a Miracle Dress

We all have big dreams and seemingly insignificant pero important dreams. One of the latter for us was to one day find a dress like the pink velour one Hallie wore in “My Date with the President’s Daughter”—the one dramatically revealed at minute 7 of this YouTube clip from the movie. After years of passively searching, we finally found it (albeit a more hipster tunic version but perfect nonetheless)! The long-awaited dress was waiting for us inside of the Hyden Yoo Boutique on Abbot Kinney where we came across it last Saturday while shopping with our friend Sarah. Finding this dress was one small part of a five day-long marathon of amazing juju that carried us through our recent Los Angeles trip (of which you will hear more about on ThankYouMiami.com next week) because it turns out it is impossible to find Hyden Yoo’s women collection anywhere on the internets.

Because this outfit was a miracle a long time in the making, we naturally bumped all other OOTDs planned for Sunday Brunch to make room for this fabulous dress. So, on Sunday, armed with our new dress, our favorite sunnies, and our favorite ASKA Collection booties (you may remember them from our last #ThankYouMiami for Fashion post because we love them so much we wear them everyday) we headed to The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach with our sister Lucy and her friends. The tunic cut was perfect for brunching—ergo, extremely applicable to Miami life—because it allowed our bellies to expand for unlimited mimosas, a massive plate of chilaquiles, zucchini fries, and donut holes and still looked flattering. And, afterward when we went on a post-brunch buzz drive down the California coast blasting Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” with the windows down, it turned out to be the prettiest, most comfortable outfit for that too. #winning.

The Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services Inc. is hosting its annual fundraiser on April 23rd from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm with Galactic Nights … Launching Into The Future, a gala to celebrate the organization’s bright future. This year’s gala will focus on the organization expanding its services and raising funds to help kids in distress who don’t have a place to call home. Proceeds will benefit Miami Bridge, which is the only 24-hour emergency shelter for youth in crisis.

We kicked off SOBEWFF®’s 15th anniversary with longtime friend Giada De Laurentiis! His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

Come explore Miami’s historic downtown like an architect! See our city’s landmark buildings through an architect’s eyes, using a sketchbook and pen. Learn to draw by sketching some of downtown Miami’s historic landmarks, like the Dade County Courthouse, the Church of Gesù and the old US Post Office Building, home of MCAD! This 2-hour course is open to beginners and novices of all ages who love architecture and want to explore it through drawing.

Joaquim Perez (University of Miami) and David Rifkind (FIU), local architects and educators, will introduce you to basic drawing techniques and lead you on the urban adventure brief sketching tour of downtown Miami. A good pair of walking shoes, maybe a hat and certainly a sketchbook and drawing implements will come in handy!

2016 Miami Youth Fair Celebrates 65 Years of Smiles and Offers More Family-Friendly Fun Than Ever

The Youth Fair runs from March 17 – April 10, 2016, except March 28-29 and April 4-5 at Tamiami Park, which has been its home for 44 years, located at Coral Way (SW 24th Street) & SW 107th Avenue.

Gates open at 3:00 p.m. March 17, 18, 30, 31, April 1, 6 & 7. Gates open at 12, noon all other operating days. Admission at the gate is $14 with free admission all day, every operating day for guests 5 years and younger and 65 years and better. Admission is also free all day for active duty and retired military personnel (with valid military ID) on Opening Day, March 17 and each Wednesday. Returning in 2016 is The Youth Fair 21-Day Admission Pass, which allows guests to pay $25 for one admission each operating day and includes one free Souvenir Cup. The Second Annual Miami Beach Concours will take place on Sunday March 20th, 2016. The Miami Beach Concours will be a celebration of the greatest post-war sports, exotic and racing automobiles.

This year’s lineup includes some of the world’s finest collections. Notable vehicles on display include a $19 million Ferrari 250 California, a $3 million Lamborghini Miura SV and a $6 million 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible. American artist John Dowd shows his new series titled “Tropical Gardens: The Contemporary Florida Landscape”” at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Friday, March 4th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until March 30th.

John Dowd shares, “This show is a further exploration of my interest in the landscape of Southern Florida… the surreal juxtaposition of the geometric modernist architecture often with vivid colors set against the lush tropical vegetation… the highly artificial night lighting creating a sense of the romantic and yet unreal… dreamlike … vacillating between the worlds of attraction and detachment. This is what I see.”

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

Concrete Beach will be celebrating the birthday of Sola, the mysterious matriarch of the brewery. BrightStar Credit Union is participating in the 21st annual fundraiser, Clueless on Las Olas, to benefit Partners in Education (PIE). Inspired by the popular board game “Clue,” the mystery themed event will take place on Thursday, March 10th, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Proceeds from Clueless on Las Olas will benefit PIE programs that assist public schools and students in Broward County by developing partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.

Clueless on Las Olas is an interactive murder mystery, street party where participants solve a fictitious case after discovering seven planted clues along Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard. This year’s theme is “Lotto Demise.”

Following check-in at Stranahan House and Laura Ward Park, participants will enter a street party where they will be given the mystery plot synopsis and meet the “suspects” before embarking on a search for additional clues along Las Olas Blvd. There are 17 clue sites, including American Social, Kilwins, Royal Pig Pub and Kitchen, and Dazzles Boutique. At 8:30 p.m., the final clue will be read and murder suspect accusations cast.

Registration is $35 per person in advance or $40 at the event. Tickets can be purchased online at www.browardpartners.com. Participants can play individually or get a team together. For every three advance ticket purchases, participants get one free ticket. Each person will receive a gift bag and event t-shirt. Miami has always been a land of open doors, each one representing a unique opportunity. Doors of Perception challenges Miami’s top artists to let their creativity flow using a humble door monolithically mounted within the cavernous space that played host to Miami Art Week’s Superfine House of Art and Design. Artists will be on hand to engage with their work and each door will be available for purchase at an accessible price of $2500 per door. Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents an entire day of theatre fun for the whole family at Kids Fest Family Day 2016 on Saturday, February 27. This year’s Kids Fest will feature two performances of the Musical Theatre for Young Audiences production of The Jungle Book at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. A ticket to either performance of the featured show secures patrons a Kids Fest Day Pass to enjoy several other great events and activities.

Kids Fest Family Day gives Actors’ Playhouse the opportunity to share the musical with the community and also integrate exciting cultural experiences for young people. Highlighting the Kids Fest this year will be a series of activity stations in which attendees can explore the creative arts in the following interactive stations: Puppet Making, Costume Creations, a Video “Dress Up” Studio, Painting Area, Interactive Acting Classes, and more.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is excited to present the Joey DeFrancesco Trio on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 8:00 PM. Joey DeFrancesco is not only a masterful jazz organist, but also an accomplished trumpeter, and vocalist. He has released more than 30 albums as a leader and also has played or recorded with jazz icons Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith, as well as David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Benny Golson, James Moody, Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, George Benson, Ray Charles and even Bette Midler.

In addition to his three Grammy nominations, DeFrancesco is a 10-time winner of the Down Beat Critics Poll and has won the Down Beat Readers Poll every year since 2005, plus a number of JazzTimes and Jazz Journalist Association awards. He was an inaugural member of the Hammond Hall of Fame in 2014.

DeFranceso’s emergence in the 1980s marked the renaissance for the B3 organ, which had been largely replaced by more portable keyboard synthesizers.  Joey reignited the flame with the vintage sound of his Hammond, and in so doing, also revived the careers of many other proponents of the “big dawg” of keyboard instruments. Joey, however, is the universally acknowledged “King of the Jazz Organ.”

Orchestra Miami’s series of FREE outdoor concerts returns in March with Beethoven on the Beach! This year’s concerts feature the 39 members of Orchestra Miami conducted by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi performing works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, and featuring special guest Ian Maksin, cello soloist. Sunday, March 6th at 7:00 PM in Pinecrest Gardens (11000 SW 57 Avenue), Saturday March 12 at 8:00 PM at the North Beach Bandshell (7275 Collins Ave in Miami Beach) and Sunday, March 13 at 6:00 PM in Heritage Park (19300 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach). These are free concerts, but a suggested donation of $10 per person will gratefully be accepted- no one turned away!

International Migratory Bird Day is FREE and open to the public

Tropical Audubon Society and its Steinberg Nature Center will be the site of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) celebrations on Saturday, March 5, from noon until 4 p.m. An array of engaging educational activities for participants of all ages will mark the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds between non-breeding grounds in the Caribbean, South America and Mexico, and their nesting habitats in North America.

Featuring interactive games and prizes, and led by a host of bird experts, the free festival is an enriching experience for families with young children, Ecology Clubs and anyone looking for a pleasant afternoon outing. Attendees will learn why bird conservation is an imperative, and how taking a few simple steps in our own yards to create a welcoming “rest stop” will also enhance quality of life in South Florida.

In addition to other planned festivities, participants can learn how to identify birds by their silhouettes, craft a Wildlife T-shirt, purchase native plants and explore the trails that thread the Hardwood Hammock and Pine Rockland grounds. Architecture buffs can tour the 1931 Doc Thomas House, which serves as TAS headquarters and was recently named to The National Register of Historic Places.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will host an artist reception for the solo exhibit “Acta Non Verba” by French-Guadeloupean artist Marielle Plaisir. Her work features paintings, drawings, textile/fiber installations, and live performances that capture highly intense visual experiences. The reception will give the artist a chance to discuss her work and the inspirations behind each piece on display. The event will be held on March 31, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. MOCA members, North Miami residents and City employees enjoy free admission to the reception; non-members and non-residents pay museum admission of $10.
