“Putting the PLUR in Politics”. The powerful acronym, Peace Love Unity Respect, has been recognized for decades as the ravers mantra and is commonly symbolized and represented in the EDM arena. The idea is to bring together people of diverse political backgrounds for a night of fellowship. Meet old friends and make new ones!

The name “Dance Party” comes from my belief of only trusting a dance party, being politically/civically involved but not loyal to a political party, making me the “NPA Rebel”. This is a fundraiser for the Good Government Initiative http://www.goodgov.net/ and League of Women Voters Miami-Dade County http://www.lwvmiamidade.org/

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of SBWFF’s Barilla’s Italian Bites on the Beach on 2/25/15

We kicked off SOBEWFF®’s 15th anniversary with longtime friend Giada De Laurentiis! Host of multiple shows on Food Network, including Giada in Italy and long-running hit primetime series Food Network Star, she brought a taste of her namesake restaurant GIADA at The Cromwell in Las Vegas to the sands of South Beach.  We joined the widely recognized queen of Italian cuisine who hosted more than 30 of the nation’s greatest chefs serving up dishes originating from various regions of Italy behind the iconic Delano Hotel. We perused Piedmont, trotted through Tuscany, savored Sardinia, canvased Campania, sauntered through Sicily, and more – while sinking our toes into the sparkling white sands of South Beach. Whether you prefer a traditional spaghetti and meatballs or a cooler antipasto-style pasta salad or a savory perciatelli and chicken, this was a celebration not to be missed.  All complemented by pours from the Campari Italian Spirits Portfolio and Folonari wines.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

“LeNard Rutledge is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. Like Rawls, Rutledge’s classy elegance is often permeated by the raw passion of his church choir work.” (Miami New Times)

The Young Artist Initiative presents a new partnership with Cafeina Miami. The second Young Artist Initiative at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge is Friday, March 4th with an incredible lineup of musicians, installations, live performances, exhibits, and more!

As a race, we live in a continuum of constant evolution. Countless minds have brought forth change to consciousness and culture and have moved our societies forward, restructuring the dynamics of our generations.

The ever-growing presence of technology in our daily lives has transcended the nature of a “trend” and has come to resemble a strong pillar in the structure of our approach to the life before us. It has changed the way we create, interact, and coexist, and has consequentially brought change to art.

For the next installment of the Young Artist Initiative, we have carefully selected technology and its cultural stigmas as the concept base for live art and activations.

All artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing technology’s role and impact on the arts across their selected mediums and comprehensively blending visual and metaphorical elements in order to present a personal interpretation of the matter.

We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflection of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists on Friday, March 4th at Cafeina Miami at 7 p.m.

John Dowd shares, “This show is a further exploration of my interest in the landscape of Southern Florida… the surreal juxtaposition of the geometric modernist architecture often with vivid colors set against the lush tropical vegetation… the highly artificial night lighting creating a sense of the romantic and yet unreal… dreamlike … vacillating between the worlds of attraction and detachment. This is what I see.”

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the Florida Renaissance Festival include Comcast, Pepsi, Warsteiner, Guinness and Miami Grill.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is excited to present the Joey DeFrancesco Trio on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 8:00 PM. This concert takes place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 students with I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online at southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Joey DeFrancesco is not only a masterful jazz organist, but also an accomplished trumpeter, and vocalist. He has released more than 30 albums as a leader and also has played or recorded with jazz icons Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith, as well as David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Benny Golson, James Moody, Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, George Benson, Ray Charles and even Bette Midler.

In addition to his three Grammy nominations, DeFrancesco is a 10-time winner of the Down Beat Critics Poll and has won the Down Beat Readers Poll every year since 2005, plus a number of JazzTimes and Jazz Journalist Association awards. He was an inaugural member of the Hammond Hall of Fame in 2014.

DeFranceso’s emergence in the 1980s marked the renaissance for the B3 organ, which had been largely replaced by more portable keyboard synthesizers.  Joey reignited the flame with the vintage sound of his Hammond, and in so doing, also revived the careers of many other proponents of the “big dawg” of keyboard instruments. Joey, however, is the universally acknowledged “King of the Jazz Organ.”

ARTISTIC PERSONNEL
Joey DeFrancesco – organ, trumpet and vocals
Dan Wilson – electric guitar
Jason Brown – drums

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

International Migratory Bird Day is FREE and open to the public

Tropical Audubon Society and its Steinberg Nature Center will be the site of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) celebrations on Saturday, March 5, from noon until 4 p.m. An array of engaging educational activities for participants of all ages will mark the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds between non-breeding grounds in the Caribbean, South America and Mexico, and their nesting habitats in North America.

Featuring interactive games and prizes, and led by a host of bird experts, the free festival is an enriching experience for families with young children, Ecology Clubs and anyone looking for a pleasant afternoon outing. Attendees will learn why bird conservation is an imperative, and how taking a few simple steps in our own yards to create a welcoming “rest stop” will also enhance quality of life in South Florida.

In addition to other planned festivities, participants can learn how to identify birds by their silhouettes, craft a Wildlife T-shirt, purchase native plants and explore the trails that thread the Hardwood Hammock and Pine Rockland grounds. Architecture buffs can tour the 1931 Doc Thomas House, which serves as TAS headquarters and was recently named to The National Register of Historic Places.

Diego (played by pop-rock star Thiago Pethit in his big-screen debut) is a party boy with daddy issues who can’t stay faithful to his sweet, dependable boyfriend. The high-octane, 10-member group Timbalive is based in Miami, but enjoys great success among the salsa circuit across Europe, South America, Cuba, and the U.S. The group just released a new album this month–their fourth– “Gasolina de Avion” (Jet Fuel), which features songs by Grammy-winning singer/composer Descemer Bueno, Maykel Fonts, and others. The title refers to the sheer power behind this production.

“We cannot wait to debut these songs for the community at this event in the heart of Little Havana,” said Musical Director Leo García.

The concert will be preceded by a salsa dance lesson, and followed by a DJ dance party on an outdoor dance floor, under the stars.

“We are so lucky to have extremely talented artists, like Timbalive, in our community and are thrilled to welcome them to the Little Havana Social Club stage!,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director, Kathryn Garcia.

The Little Havana Social Club, in it’s very special home at the Koubek Center, is all about community and mingling–from the dance floor to the domino tables to the food trucks. Earlier this season, the series presented Peru’s own Cumbia All Stars as well as the “Duke of Bachata”, Joan Soriano, straight from the Dominican Republic.

ABOUT TIMBALIVE
Timbalive was created in 2008, founded by Musical Director and Timbales player, Leo García. Its members all come from the top music schools in Cuba, but are now all based in Miami. The group released their first album “De Miami a la Habana”, a collection of their own songs and covers of beloved composers, in 2009. They quickly gained international attention, appearing the Top 10 in more than 20 countries, and winning “Álbum Revelación del Año 2009” in France and Best Timba album in Peru. Two more albums followed: “La Timba Pa to El Mundo,” (2011), nominated for a Cubadicoso award in the popular music category, and Con la Música Cubana No” (2013), securing their position as one of the most popular timba groups in the Latin circuit. The group has toured extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Canada, South America and the US. Timbalive credits its success to hard work, perseverance, and their signature sound– an inimitable mix of Caribbean rhythms and Cuban popular music, with the lyrics and arrangements designed with the dancer in mind. They have just released a new album, “Gasolina de Avion,” in January 2016.

Latin Symphony celebrates the fusion of Latin & classical music with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons by The Miami Chamber Orchestra.

Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi is one of the most beloved classical composers of all times, especially because of his concertos for violin and his greatest masterpiece “The Four Seasons.” The best known work of Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concerts, each of which offers a musical interpretation of the seasons of the year.

And nothing better to bring in the season than the Vivaldi’s masterpiece with young violin virtuoso Nuné Melikian and the Miami Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jorge Vazquez. After a long winter, spring arises like a colorful explosion leading into the slowing sensation of heat and culminating into the bountiful harvest of fall. Experience the musical journey of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, presented by Latin Symphony.

ADL Florida will hold its inaugural Miami In Concert Against Hate. This inspirational evening will honor local individuals who have demonstrated tremendous courage, compassion, and determination in confronting hate and intolerance. Our heroes include individuals who could not stand by while others were targets of injustice, and individuals who were themselves victims of hate, extremism, and bigotry. It is more than a concert. It’s a celebration of what Miami stands for.

These extraordinary stories will be narrated by host Larry King and uniquely interwoven with music from the Nu Deco Ensemble of the New World Center. Honorees: Robert Gant, actor, Queer as Folk; Chief Frank Kitzerow, Town of Jupiter Police Department – worked tirelessly to investigate the hate-crime murder of Guatemalan teenager Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; family of Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; Angela King, reformed racist skinhead; the late acclaimed journalist Steven Sotloff (z”l), murdered by ISIS.

Our music scene lost Bryan Modesto late last year. Bryan wasn’t a musician but he attended more shows than most. We decided to throw this fundraiser for his family when we saw first hand the astronomical cost of death. Then recently, we were all hit with the news of Ariel Gonzalez’s ongoing struggle with cancer. Ariel is hands down one of the best punk rock guitarists around. Seeing as Ariel’s battle with cancer is a costly one, we decided to host this fundraiser for both Bryan and Ariel. If you can’t make the show but wish to donate please visit their gofundme pages. Opening on February 24, PREY pays homage to the predator and prey interconnections of the food chain. Climate change, habitat destruction, nonnative species, pollution, over-crowding of the planet with humans, overfishing and over-harvesting of wild animals are all ways that humans have damaged the predator and prey relationships. By featuring local sustainable seafood, wild and nonnative species, and organically farmed produce, PREY transforms consumption in a manner that helps restore and rehabilitate human and planetary health. Items found on the menu are indigenous to Florida and Chef Bun will hunt, dive and forage for all himself.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion: The Must-Have Travel Dress

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Must-Have-Travel-Dress-Casual-Bodycon-6

Today, our dear Miami fashion bunnies, we’re leaving on our Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day trip to the Catskills so we’re talking travel fashion. More specifically, we’re talking about the dress every jetsetter needs in their closet: the casual bodycon. We first learned about this magical piece of clothing four months ago in the Dominican Republic, where we were incapacitated with a stomach bug and facing the prospect of getting on a 2-hour flight back to Miami. Our friend Betsy forced us into her favorite knit bodycon dress so we could be more comfortable for the schlep. The flight was awful, but the dress was super comfy—an incredible feat considering we had a 104-degree fever the entire time. Unfortunately Betsy’s casual bodycon dress had to be returned to its rightful owner. Fortunately Forever21 has had an abundance in stock so we’ve acquired two of our own—one in a knit fabric and one in a t-shirt fabric, both a size up for extra comfort—and it’s all we want to wear when we travel.

The casual bodycon is the ideal foundation for any travel outfit. There really is no better canvas on which to layer comfy sweaters or, better yet, those puffy coats that you absolutely have to wear on the plane because they’re impossible to fit in your suitcase. Plus, the dress complements every body type, can be dressed up or dressed down, and goes with every shoe from sneakers to heels. Our go-to combo is our grey knit bodycon with a jean jacket, a wraparound scarf and a pair of ankle booties. How would you style it?
