This Brazilian film (in Portuguese with English subtitles) focuses on three best friends: Julia has chosen to remain blind to the obvious signs that her current boyfriend is a two-timing cad, but her eyes are forced wide-open when she discovers that she is pregnant with his child. Diego (played by pop-rock star Thiago Pethit in his big-screen debut) is a party boy with daddy issues who can’t stay faithful to his sweet, dependable boyfriend. Micaela, meanwhile, is wasting her time chasing a bisexual actress who won’t even acknowledge their shared intimacy in private. Following the screening, the film’s director, Vera Egito, will hold a Q&A and Winter Party Festival will host a reception with a Grey Goose open bar.

The High-Octane Salsa band to present songs from their new album “Gasolina de Avion”
Miami, Feb. 19, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts present the widely popular Cuban timba band, Timbalive, at 8 p.m., on Friday, Mar. 18 at the Koubek Center, offering a souped-up form of salsa, full of infectious rhythms, playful hooks, and plenty of swagger. The show culminates MDC Live Arts’ new Little Havana Social Club dance party/concert series, featuring flavorful live bands, pre-concert dance lessons, specialty food, and cocktail vendors.

The high-octane, 10-member group Timbalive is based in Miami, but enjoys great success among the salsa circuit across Europe, South America, Cuba, and the U.S. The group just released a new album this month–their fourth– “Gasolina de Avion” (Jet Fuel), which features songs by Grammy-winning singer/composer Descemer Bueno, Maykel Fonts, and others. The title refers to the sheer power behind this production.

“We cannot wait to debut these songs for the community at this event in the heart of Little Havana,” said Musical Director Leo García.

The concert will be preceded by a salsa dance lesson, and followed by a DJ dance party on an outdoor dance floor, under the stars.

“We are so lucky to have extremely talented artists, like Timbalive, in our community and are thrilled to welcome them to the Little Havana Social Club stage!,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director, Kathryn Garcia.

The Little Havana Social Club, in it’s very special home at the Koubek Center, is all about community and mingling–from the dance floor to the domino tables to the food trucks. Earlier this season, the series presented Peru’s own Cumbia All Stars as well as the “Duke of Bachata”, Joan Soriano, straight from the Dominican Republic.

ABOUT TIMBALIVE
Timbalive was created in 2008, founded by Musical Director and Timbales player, Leo García. Its members all come from the top music schools in Cuba, but are now all based in Miami. The group released their first album “De Miami a la Habana”, a collection of their own songs and covers of beloved composers, in 2009. They quickly gained international attention, appearing the Top 10 in more than 20 countries, and winning “Álbum Revelación del Año 2009” in France and Best Timba album in Peru. Two more albums followed: “La Timba Pa to El Mundo,” (2011), nominated for a Cubadicoso award in the popular music category, and Con la Música Cubana No” (2013), securing their position as one of the most popular timba groups in the Latin circuit. The group has toured extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Canada, South America and the US. Timbalive credits its success to hard work, perseverance, and their signature sound– an inimitable mix of Caribbean rhythms and Cuban popular music, with the lyrics and arrangements designed with the dancer in mind. They have just released a new album, “Gasolina de Avion,” in January 2016.

Latin Symphony celebrates the fusion of Latin & classical music with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons by The Miami Chamber Orchestra.

Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi is one of the most beloved classical composers of all times, especially because of his concertos for violin and his greatest masterpiece “The Four Seasons.” The best known work of Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concerts, each of which offers a musical interpretation of the seasons of the year.

And nothing better to bring in the season than the Vivaldi’s masterpiece with young violin virtuoso Nuné Melikian and the Miami Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jorge Vazquez. After a long winter, spring arises like a colorful explosion leading into the slowing sensation of heat and culminating into the bountiful harvest of fall. Experience the musical journey of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, presented by Latin Symphony.

ADL Florida will hold its inaugural Miami In Concert Against Hate. This inspirational evening will honor local individuals who have demonstrated tremendous courage, compassion, and determination in confronting hate and intolerance. Our heroes include individuals who could not stand by while others were targets of injustice, and individuals who were themselves victims of hate, extremism, and bigotry. It is more than a concert. It’s a celebration of what Miami stands for.

These extraordinary stories will be narrated by host Larry King and uniquely interwoven with music from the Nu Deco Ensemble of the New World Center. Honorees: Robert Gant, actor, Queer as Folk; Chief Frank Kitzerow, Town of Jupiter Police Department – worked tirelessly to investigate the hate-crime murder of Guatemalan teenager Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; family of Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; Angela King, reformed racist skinhead; the late acclaimed journalist Steven Sotloff (z”l), murdered by ISIS.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion: The Must-Have Travel Dress

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Must-Have-Travel-Dress-Casual-Bodycon-6

Today, our dear Miami fashion bunnies, we’re leaving on our Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day trip to the Catskills so we’re talking travel fashion. More specifically, we’re talking about the dress every jetsetter needs in their closet: the casual bodycon. We first learned about this magical piece of clothing four months ago in the Dominican Republic, where we were incapacitated with a stomach bug and facing the prospect of getting on a 2-hour flight back to Miami. Our friend Betsy forced us into her favorite knit bodycon dress so we could be more comfortable for the schlep. The flight was awful, but the dress was super comfy—an incredible feat considering we had a 104-degree fever the entire time. Unfortunately Betsy’s casual bodycon dress had to be returned to its rightful owner. Fortunately Forever21 has had an abundance in stock so we’ve acquired two of our own—one in a knit fabric and one in a t-shirt fabric, both a size up for extra comfort—and it’s all we want to wear when we travel.

The casual bodycon is the ideal foundation for any travel outfit. There really is no better canvas on which to layer comfy sweaters or, better yet, those puffy coats that you absolutely have to wear on the plane because they’re impossible to fit in your suitcase. Plus, the dress complements every body type, can be dressed up or dressed down, and goes with every shoe from sneakers to heels. Our go-to combo is our grey knit bodycon with a jean jacket, a wraparound scarf and a pair of ankle booties. How would you style it?

3rd Annual Filmgate Interactive 2/20/16 – 2/28/16

3rd Annual Filmgate Interactive
February 20 – 28, 2016

FilmGate Interactive, the U.S.A.’s only Immersive Media Conference, returns for its third year with more than 20 screenings, 6 performances, 5 interactive exhibits and 15 workshops, which explore the intersection of film, technology and interactive storytelling.

The FilmGate Interactive Conference will take place from February 20 to 28, 2016 at prime arts locations throughout Miami Beach and Miami, Florida. Over 5,000 production professionals and enthusiastic amateurs, are anticipated to attend this year’s conference and their goal is to learn, showcase their work, and develop new content through immersive and interactive techniques – an approach that recognizes the changing landscape of entertainment and storytelling, and produces a more cohesive and rewarding audience experience.

Under the helm of Executive Director Diliana Alexander, the FilmGate Interactive conference aims to engage viewers in the creative process while also providing production professionals, filmmakers, videographers, gamers, coders, writers, photographers, story architects, marketing and advertising creatives and technophile audiences with access to experts and state-of-the-art tools to craft their own projects.

FilmGate Interactive answers the question of how new technology is influencing the future of entertainment, art and digital storytelling. We called the Conference, FilmGate to pay homage to our roots—the capturing of that moment, when film passed through the gate and is illuminated—but there is hardly any film left in today’s reality. We live in a digital world with ever-changing technological landscape and our programming and learning environments reflect that – Diliana Alexander

In a nod to the Hispanic creative and new technology communities from Central and South America and the Caribbean, an important aspect of conference programming embedded since its launching has been to represent diversity and emerging markets. At this year’s Conference, FilmGate Interactive will feature immersive media creators from Brazil and Colombia. “South Florida’s unique socio-cultural demographic and proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean have positioned Miami Beach and Miami as an international destination for arts, development and increasingly, technology,” said Alexander. “There is a tangible shift in the region’s identity as one poised for opportunity and growth.”

Program highlights include:
The Interactive Tech Playground
The Interactive Tech Playground is a curated fair with 30 selected exhibitors offering innovative products (cameras, lights, cranes, lenses, gaming software, apps, video equipment, etc.) and services.  Spanning over more than 8,000 square-feet at the historic Deauville Beach Resort, the Interactive Tech Playground was designed to be a platform to connect trade and consumer audiences to the advances in new technology, from startups to blue chip companies.
The Playground will feature the FilmGate Center Stage, an area for live presentations and an interactive set with live actors, where anyone can “play” with the gear on display.
We welcome new editions to the program: cinematic camera manufacturers RED Digital and Blackmagic. SONY will return with a workshop on High Dynamic Range for Content Production and Distribution, How to get the best imagery from the PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 motion picture cameras and a Miami specific workshop involving underwater videography and photography. Past participants have included Panasonic, Canon, Arri CSC, Kessler Cranes, Schneider Optics, Manfrotto, Dodo Case, Nauticam and Cinedrones, among others.

Interactive Screenings
Manual Cinema’s LULA DEL RAY is the story of a lonely adolescent girl who lives with her mother on the outskirts of a vast satellite array in the middle of the desert, and is performed with overhead projectors, shadow puppets, actors in silhouette, and live music. Set in the mid-century American Southwest, the project is inspired by the music of Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline.
Katerina Cizek’s THE UNIVERSE WITHIN, the final chapter of the Digital Emmy award-winning series HIGHRISE, poses the questions, as cities reach for the sky, how do we engage with our loved ones over the worldwide web? How has this reality rewired our brains? The project was created for the National Film Board of Canada.
DO NOT TRACK, directed by Brett Gaylor and co-produced by Upian, Arte, the National Film Board of Canada, is a personalized documentary series about privacy and the web economy.
AFTER THE STORM, directed by Andrew Grace and for the first time jointly launched on line by PBS’s Independent Lens and the Washington Post, is an interactive documentary, which tells the story of what happened after a half-mile wide tornado plowed through the middle of Tuscaloosa, a small southern college town in central Alabama, after the storm passed, the media left town, and after the adrenaline subsided.
THE STORY OF THE STAFF, a web documentary by Ashley Maynor, an investigation into America’s obsession with temporary memorials. It tracks what happens to more than half a million letters, 65,000 teddy bears, and hundreds of thousands of other packages, donations, and condolence items sent to Newtown, Connecticut, in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Interactive Exhibits
Nonny de la Pena and her Emblematic Group team will present ONE DARK NIGHT, a Trayvon Martin VR Reenactment. The near constant flow of news detailing yet another shooting death of a black person by U.S. police officers may eventually dull the shock for some observers, but what if you could relive the incidents reported as if you were there? This is a data driven, immersive virtual reality reenactment of the February 2012 Florida shooting death of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman.
DISCLOSE MIAMI, a participatory, slow, immersive sound and sight installation, designed for relaxation, conversation and creative production, will be created by Billy Wrasnik, Emily Ferrier and a team of creative technologists in real time during the Conference, It will stitch together the sounds and sights captured by the participants of the SOUND FOR THE NEW MEDIA FRONTIER workshop, being held at the conference prior to the event.

Workshops
IMMERSIVE MEDIA MASTER CLASS with Katerina Cizek: An innovative storyteller who works across many media platforms, Katerina Cizek created the seven year long, multi-media project HIGHRISE for the National Film Board of Canada. The project won the 2011 Digital Emmy award in the non-fiction category for digital programs.
Sound designer and classically trained musician Billy Wirasnik will lead a SOUND FOR THE NEW MEDIA FRONTIER workshop, which will present practical answers the question of what can be done to incorporate thoughtful, meaningful use of sound. Attendees of the workshop will use the medium of Slow TV, an emerging genre of observational films, as a vessel of exploring sound and patient filmmaking.
The Brazilian #EraTransmidia group, will teach a Multi Audience Multi Platform workshop (MAMP), which will utilize real cases and hands on activities, to create story worlds.

Interactive Events

“I’m Not Gonna Move to L.A.” (N.O.L.A.) is a monthly event that for the last three years has screened local shorts made in Florida under the same roof at independent art house O Cinema.  After a Q & A and rapid-fire trivia, the audience is asked to vote for their favorite film using some unorthodox devices. In a culmination of N.O.L.A. all-stars, the winners of the past months have been invited to O Cinema Miami Beach for a chance to win the grand prize, the Pink Kraken.

All screenings, installations and workshops are suitable to all skill levels and high school students. 75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics
February 17 – August 28, 2016

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) in collaboration with the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives is pleased to present the exhibition 75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics. The exhibition, drawn from the recent donation of over 75 photographs from Agencia EFE, the world’s leading Spanish-language news agency, will open to the public on February 17, 2016 at MOA+D located within the College’s Historic Freedom Tower.

75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics, is an exhibition and collection of photographs donated to MDC’s Permanent Art Collection and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives. The exhibition includes photographs of Ibero-American and world history and features images of historic importance, such as the meeting between Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler at the start of World War II, Princess Diana, Martin Luther King, as well as photos of Celia Cruz, Cantinflas and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The collection will continue to grow, as the agency donates a historically significant photograph that encapsulates the most important headline of each year.

In 2015, Agencia EFE, the Spanish international news agency, celebrated 75 years of service. The world’s fourth largest wire service, EFE has documented and reported the most important global events through words and images. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, EFE compiled a collection of its most arresting and impactful images for each year in operation. Featuring photographs from EFE’s award-winning photojournalists, the exhibition captures pivotal moments in history including coronations of kings and queens, presidential visits, star-studded moments, physical triumphs and political turmoil. EFE was born in 1939 in a Spain devastated by the Civil War and began its expansion in the Americas in 1966 with the opening of its first bureaus in the region. Today, EFE operates in 180 cities in 120 countries, employing more than 3,000 news professionals from 60 nationalities.

“The Museum of Art + Design is thrilled to present this important exhibition that not only encompasses achievements by photojournalists but also the depiction of pivotal moments in Ibero-American history.” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, MOA+D’s executive director and chief curator. “We are honored by the generous on-going donation from EFE, as it expands our diverse collection and provides continued collaboration opportunities between the Museum and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives.”

Richard Haas’ Florida
April 21 – August 14, 2016

In 2015, famed muralist Richard Haas donated over 50 works on paper, preparatory sketches, and models to the Museums Permanent Art Collection. The suite of exquisitely rendered drawings and plans reveal Haas’ deep appreciation of architecture and served as studies for the majestic murals he created throughout South Florida. The large Art Deco “Arc de Triomphe” was painted onto the original Fountainebleau Hilton Hotel in Miami Beach, designed by Morris Lapidus, and was “lit” by two sixty-five feet high grand lamps in the form of caryatids. The now destroyed mural was just one example of the artists’ iconic work adorning the building facades within Miami Dade County.

Richard Haas murals have been painted on blank walls of buildings in cities throughout the United States including New York, Boston, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Miami. The paintings are extravagant and inventive architectural fantasies, which alter the cityscape around them.

“Richard Haas is an artist about architecture – he makes people stop and think about architecture and realize that buildings are not just a backdrop; they are also an active presence in our lives.” -Paul Goldberger, Architecture Critic, Vanity Fair

In this exhibition, Richard Haas’ Florida, many works will be on loan from Haas’ private collection which include final preparatory studies for projects created throughout Florida including State Offices, Tallahassee, Florida; The University of Tampa series; SeaWorld, Orlando project; final drawings for mosaics for Home Savings Banks in Aventura, Bradenton, Vero Beach, Naples, the Sarasota County Courthouse and the Bakehouse, Miami. In addition, new paintings from Haas’ Museum interior series will also be on loan from Harmon Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida .

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents “Coppelia”.

Miami, Fl. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, one of South Florida’s most acclaimed ballet companies, will present the third program of the season with the delightful and lovely ballet comedy:”Coppelia”. It will run March 5th -6th at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, and March 12th -13th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts at the Amaturo Theater.

Coppelia is considered one of the most famous ballets of the classical repertoire. Vladimir Issaev’s version, based on the original work by Arthur Saint Leon is presented as a dynamic and entertaining ballet that will awe audience of all ages and allow everyone to enjoy it in a very unique way.

Issaev will keep the elements of the piece which are traditional ballet, character dance and pantomime, but adding the very peculiar humor and freshness of his works, which is already a trend in his choreographies. The original version was released on May 25, 1870 at the Paris Opera. It tells the story of Doctor Coppélius, a mysterious and absent minded inventor who created a mechanic life-size dancing doll: Coppelia. It is so lifelike that Franz (Daniel Sarabia or Hernan Montenegro), a village youth, is mesmerized by her beauty and is determined to attract her attention setting aside his true love, Swanhilda (Mary Carmen Catoya or Lillian Hill). She shows Frank his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will have the participation of more than 20 professional dancers. The most advanced students of Vladimir Issaev School of Classical Ballet have been invited to perform along the professional dancers of the company.

Coppelia will feature the debut of talented Cuban dancer Daniel Sarabia, who is joining Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and sharing his extensive experience with the company. Having graduated from the National Ballet School of Cuba, Sarabia has been part of the Boston Ballet Company, The Béjart Ballet Lausanne (Switzerland), and was principal dancer of Miami City Ballet. He has also been in major productions dancing principal roles in Latin America, Asia and Europe.

Coppelia will be presented March 5 & 6 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and March 12 & 13 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“We are very honored and so excited to be able to welcome these top two Jewish musical giants in concert at our synagogue,” said Steve Allen, executive director of Congregation B’nai Israel. “Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach are superstars in their own rights, and about a year ago combined their talents musically to form the most explosive, meaningful and rocking show for all audiences. Combining Josh’s rock talents and inspirational writings inspired by his late mentor, Debbie Friedman, and Neshama’s strong allegiance to her late father and icon, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, this is a concert that absolutely cannot be missed.”

Neshama Carlebach, a leading superstar in Jewish entertainment, is continuing the legacy established by her father, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Like her father, Neshama’s talent and charisma captivate and endear her to people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds. Neshama has performed and taught in cities worldwide, has sung on the Broadway stage, has sold more than one million records, and was a six-time entrant in the 2011 Grammy Awards. Neshama was one of the creators of the Broadway play “Soul Doctor.” Her ninth recording, “Soul Daughter,” features performances by the original Broadway cast of the musical. Neshama is currently touring with a new band and gospel choir and joyfully raising her two sons, Rafael and Micah.

A classically trained musician who is equally versed in rock, jazz and world music, Josh Nelson combines his broad range of influences into a breathtaking musical style that is accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether appearing solo or with an elite ensemble of world-class musicians, Josh’s presence and performance style is high-energy and captivating. His music builds community, lifting up congregations and concert audiences alike through experiences that are at once energizing and deeply moving. Most recently, Josh starred as Shlomo Carlebach in the Off-Broadway revival of “Soul Doctor” at New York’s Actors Temple Theatre.

For your Mediterranean food fix, join us at the newly opened Apeiro Kitchen + Bar on Thurs., Feb 4 for Happy Hour. This new hotspot features a menu of rustic, yet contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. The setting is chic and sophisticated and there’s seating available inside the dining room, at the illuminated circular bar and in the terrace, a perfect place for people watching.

Although the Miami location has only been open since October, if it takes after Apeiro’s first location in Delray Beach, we have quite a bit to be excited about. The original location received a perfect four-star review from the Sun-Sentinel, was named the “Best New Restaurant” by Broward/Palm Beach New Times — and is our next location for Happy Hour.

Join us on Thursday, February 4 from 6-8 p.m., for an evening of wine, conversation and new taste sensations. Cost is $10, if purchased by noon on the 28th and $15, thereafter. This includes one drink (cocktail or glass of house wine) and a selection of complimentary appetizers.
