Launching its 21st Season, and following last year’s sold-out run, City Theatre’s Island Shorts returns with a special program for its exclusive Key Biscayne winter production. The “Shorts”, plays running ten minutes or less, feature Summer Shorts classics and brand new premieres. Directed by Gail Garrisan and performed by an ensemble of South Florida professional artists, Island Shorts will engage City Theatre’s veteran Summer Shorts audiences and introduce the award-winning company to new snowbird fans. Each performance will be followed by a post-show discussion with the cast.

Island Shorts, an exclusive limited engagement of only three performances, will open on Friday, February 5 with a pre-show reception at 6:30 p.m., and play through February 7. Performances are Friday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 7 at 4 p.m.

The South Florida Depression Glass Club (SFDGC), one of the nation’s foremost groups of experts on all things vintage and Depression glass, announced today that tickets are now on sale for the Annual Vintage Glass, Pottery and Dinnerware Show and Sale. The two-day event, which kicks off on February 6-7, 2016 attracts collectors, vendors, dealers, designers and consumers from across the U.S. in search of the wildly popular and rare machine-pressed, tinted glassware , some of which was mass-produced in America during the Great Depression from the 1920s through the 1940s. Thanks to the new sparked interested of wedding planners and brides from all over the country started by design expert Martha Stewart & food guru Paula Deen when they both began highlighting these American treasures throughout 2015 in their magazines and TV shows – this year’s event is expected to be bigger than ever!

As Depression glass has grown in popularity, certain colors and patterns have become scarce and hard to find. The Annual Vintage Glass, Pottery and Dinnerware Show & Sale is known as the ultimate treasure hunt for collectors throughout seeking sought after designs, exquisite pieces and rarities that range in value from a few dollars to up to several hundred dollars. The glass, rich with historic significance, is displayed in well-appointed homes across the U.S. and recently has become a major trend in wedding décor used to add color, whimsy and a vintage feel.

About Depression Glass

Depression glass is clear or colored translucent glassware that was distributed free, or at low cost, in the United States and Canada around the time of the Great Depression. The Quaker Oats Company, and other food manufacturers and distributors, put a piece of glassware in boxes of food, as an incentive to purchase. Movie theaters and businesses would hand out a piece simply for coming in the door. Most of this glassware was made in the Ohio River Valley of the United States, where access to raw materials and power made manufacturing inexpensive in the first half of the twentieth century. More than twenty manufacturers made more than 100 patterns, and entire dinner sets were made in some patterns. Common colors are clear (crystal), pink, pale blue, green, and amber. Depression Glass has been highly collectible since the 1960s. Due to its popularity, Depression Glass is becoming more scarce on the open market. Rare pieces that were once handed out free may now sell for several hundred dollars. Some manufacturers continued to make popular patterns after World War II, or introduced similar patterns, which are also collectible. Popular and expensive patterns and pieces have been reproduced, and reproductions are still being made today.

An exquisitely trained classical pianist, Antonio Adolfo has been among the elite of Rio de Janeiro’s jazz scene for decades, where his talent was nurtured with the bossa nova movement in Rio’s Copa section, somewhat analogous to Greenwich Village of the 1960s, actually. Soon, he was touring with legendary Brazilian singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. Today, Antonio is a master of Brazilian song. A renowned educator, he established a prominent music conservatory, Centro Musical Antonio Adolfo, several years ago in Rio, which is now run by his two daughters. Antonio, of course, is a first-class performer and perhaps even better known as composer. Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Earl Klugh and Dionne Warwick have all have performed or recorded his compositions. In the last decade, he has been enormously prolific in his recorded output, often featuring his vocalist-daughter Carol Saboya. Included in his discography is an acclaimed 2015 CD, Copa Village, made with Hendrik Meurkens, a frequent collaborator for over three decades. His work has not gone unnoticed, either. A 2014 solo recording O Piano de Antonio Adolfo garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination, as did the 2015 ensemble CD, Tema.

Hendrik Meurkens is not your basic exponent of Brazilian jazz. He is a German-born vibraphone virtuoso who trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He then broadened his scope after hearing the legendary chromatic harmonica legend Toots Thielemans. Hendrik was inspired to teach himself to play and master this capricious instrument and become its most important exponent since Thielemans. Another life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after Berklee, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to totally immerse himself in the music and culture of Brazil. His recordings and performances have earned worldwide acclaim because of the transcendent beauty of his music, a fusion of traditional and Brazilian jazz. He has recorded more than two-dozen albums as a leader or co-leader. A cross-cultural amalgam guaranteed to touch the heart, the quartet features Hendrik’s harmonica and vibes along with Adolfo’s piano styling, with bass and drums, playing many of Antonio and Hendrik’s stirring original compositions and arrangements.

Also featuring Jamie Ousley, bass, and Carlomagno Araya, drums.

YoungArts Alumnus Jason Moran (1993 Winner in Jazz) is bringing an inspired blend of jazz, skateboarding and new media to the YoungArts Campus. Join us for an intimate Salon about Moran’s creative inspiration, sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, where Moran will meet iconic street skater and childhood hero Mark Gonzales (also known as “Gonz” or “The Gonz”) for the first time. Often called the Salvador Dali of skateboarding, Gonz has been credited with reinventing the wheel for street skaters and bringing street skating to the forefront with a 1984 cover for Thrasher magazine.

Following the talk, Moran will share a site-specific iteration of this body of work replete with a carved-out half-bowl, half-pipe ramp installed on the Plaza in a family-friendly, multidisciplinary Outside the Box performance on the YoungArts Plaza. Featuring Miami’s best street skaters organized by professional skateboarder Joel Meinholz and acclaimed skateboard photographer Ian O’Connor, audiences will experience a 360-degree immersion filled with the art of improvisation in both music and sport. Benefiting Miami Culinary Institute & the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation.

The second annual edition of Taste of Miami–a dynamic charity event showcasing the unique and stylish flavors of South Florida through a delectable selection of culinary bites, premium spirits, and craft beverages from the city’s top restaurants–will take place Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Marlins Park. The evening will be hosted by renowned celebrity chef and Miami native Adrianne Calvo, as well as Miami Marlins All-Star pitcher Jose Fernandez. Proceeds from this event under the stars will benefit the Marlins Foundation, the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation, and the Miami Culinary Institute’s Joanna Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Taste of Miami targets the vast population of culinary enthusiasts in the South Florida area, but also aims to attract a diverse demographic of general consumers who enjoy food, drink, and participation in charitable endeavors. The proceedings were inspired by the memory of Miami Culinary Institute student Joanna Rodriguez, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 20 in December 2014.
Ms. Rodriguez was a beloved member of the school’s student body whose passion for the culinary arts and brightening the lives of those around her was exemplified by her ever-present smile and compassionate spirit. In memory of Joanna’s talent, dedication, and love of her craft, the Marlins Foundation, in conjunction with the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation and the Miami Culinary Institute, forged the concept of a night featuring some of the preeminent talents in the celebrated Miami food and wine landscape.

“It’s an honor to be able to serve as co-host of an event that ultimately celebrates both the culinary arts and the memory of an aspiring student who dreamt of a career in the field”, remarks Chef Adrianne. “The fact that the night will help launch the university careers of two students who also want to embark on this path provides me with even greater inspiration to be a part of it.”
Funds raised from the event will go towards the funding of two Miami Culinary Institute scholarships for deserving Hispanic high school and college students looking to embark on a career in the Food and Beverage industry.

In addition to providing attendees with a diverse and multi-course array of Miami’s unique flavors, taking place on Thursday, February 18, Chef Adrianne and Jose Fernandez will judge a live “Chef Showdown” that featuresTelemundo’s Chef James Tahhan returning to defend his MVP Master Chef title alongside a Miami Marlins All-Star alumni player serving as his sous chef. Exhibiting restaurants and microbreweries will also compete for the coveted Taste of Miami “Grand Slam” award. The Grand Slam award is a “Best In Show”-form of recognition that will be determined by votes from the event’s attendees on each contest participant’s performance in the categories of Table Presentation and Taste. The winning entry will receive a 2016 Taste of Miami Grand Slam Trophy and a $1000 donation will also be made to the participant’s 501c3-classified charity of choice.

érémy Gobé, who lives and works in Paris, imbues objects that he finds in his path with new purpose. In his room-sized installation, Freedom Leading Wool, Gobé uses fabric and mesh to create a dramatic enveloping space. The red wool, claimed from a shuttered factory in rural France, recalls a dying industry and its displaced craftsmen. This work references the 1830 masterpiece by Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, recalling the movement, drama and patriotism of that iconic work. On view through FEB 28, 2016

In addition to this installation, a new work by Gobé, Nature’s Imagination Scares Me, will be on view in the storefront galleries at 23rd and Collins Avenue as part of tc: temporary contemporary, the Bass Museum of Art’s public art program.

His life was as bizarre as his paintings: Melting clocks, tigers leaping out of nowhere, flaming giraffes, mills powered by butterflies, women with protruding drawers, and plenty of overt and subtle sexual references to go around. Paintings charged with religiosity that ranged from the blasphemous to the pious. A personal life that resembled a circus. A financial success wrapped inside of a financial disaster. Famous for being famous. Sexual exploits to make a herd of prudes squirm. An ego that hardly fit within the universe. Many described him as a skilled painter; others, unh-uh, not so much. What is undeniable though is that he was among the most creative artists of the XX Century.

Miguel Rodez has challenged himself and a select group of artists to create artwork in their own style, but incorporating an image of Salvador Dalí’s face within the work, along with some element of Dalí’s ideas. It is an art project that is intended an homage to both Dalí and his artwork. Several artists have taken up the challenge. Their work, which includes drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, fine art photography, and other media, will be shown at FACING DaLí in January 2016. You are invited to share in this experience.

COCA-COLA’S TEEN DANCE PROGRAM “SHARE THE MOVIMIENTO” RETURNS TO SOUTH FLORIDA

It’s time to shine up those dancing shoes because Coca-Cola’s Share the Movimiento (“Share the Movement”) dance program is back in South Florida. Share the Movimiento provides teens a chance to work together as a team and express themselves through dance while getting involved with the community. This year kicks-off the second annual event that invites teens to move and groove their way toward the $5,000 first prize that makes a difference in something they’re truly passionate about in their community.

Beginning January 12, participants ages 14 through 19 are encouraged to assemble a “dance crew” of two to six members and submit a video of their routine, featuring the signature dance move and program’s official theme song, “Take Me Away,” by Robby Cam. About: The Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival is a four-day music festival, featuring a selection of the best jazz musicians in the world. The honor of your noble company is requested as the Florida Renaissance Festival, now celebrating its 24th year of fantastical journeys back in time, where hundreds of talented performers from around the globe take to the stage and participants donned in their finest regalia fill the bustling streets with laughter and awe! With an unprecedented seven theme-filled weekends, the Florida Renaissance Festival will take place from February 13 to March 27, 2016 at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park.

“Being able to take people on an elaborate, visual, interactive journey back in time is what drives us every year as we plan our annual festival,” said Bobby Rodriguez, Founder of the Florida Renaissance Festival. “There is no other place in Florida where you’ll find jousting knights, regal ladies, swashbucklers and Vikings mixing with modern-day hipsters, fantasy lovers, history buffs and families.”

The festival’s theme this year is “Renaissance Around the World.” Renaissance, which means “rebirth,” began with the Italian culture and then spread to other areas to produce a French Renaissance, an English Renaissance, Spanish Renaissance, and so on. Cultures around the world have witnessed the discovery and exploration of new continents, the advancement of science, the growth of commerce, and the invention or application of powerful innovations. For the 2016 season, the Royal Court announces a variety of fan favorite acts and performances with an invigorating entertainment lineup that includes something for everyone. Jay and Abby Michaels are The Harper and The Minstrel, who combine their alto and baritone voices with the soothing sounds of harp and flute. Trash or Treasure will provide an interactive experience by acting out scrambled stories with the help of children and adults of all ages. The Kelly Irish Dancers will perform a delightful mix of traditional and contemporary styles of Irish dance. In an impressive display of bravery, The Duelists will combine comedy and sword fighting that takes the audience on an emotional journey, from gasps to laughs. Using only whistling and hand gestures to communicate, Moonie The Magnificent leaves audiences in stitches while performing magic and other feats. Join Captain Red Swash Rogers and Mr. Buckle as they sail they seas and land ashore for pirate comedy and sword fighting in Buckle & Swash. The Cobblestone Characters travel around and interact with patrons throughout the day with their many antics.

New to the Florida Renaissance Festival is the eighth generation equestrian dynasty Caroline Williams’ Liberty Horse Act. Witness the magical presentation of Lipizzan Stallions at the same time, as they perform freely and dazzle with their hypnotizing movement.

* Swashbucklers & Sirens Weekend – February 13 – 15: Shiver Me Timbers! This Pirate-themed weekend unearths the mysteries of the sea as sirens lure sailors and pirates alike with their enchanting music and voices leaving those who dare to listen shipwrecked! Prepare yourselves for a “salty” good time! Open President’s Day, February 15th.

* Vikings and Valkyries – February 20 – 21: Enter the mythical world of Valhalla where Valkyries rule over fallen warriors. These powerful war goddesses can stand toe-to-toe with the huge, bearded barbarians in animal fur tunics and horned helmets that we call Vikings. Only the strongest and most courageous warriors will survive this weekend!

* Fantasy and Adventure – February 26- 28: Adventurers from lands near and far bring myriad works of magic, imagination and fantasy to this weekend’s events. Enter a world where dragons fly, wizards cast spells and mystical characters come to life. If you can imagine it, then this is the weekend where it can actually happen!

* Voyage to the Orient – March 5 – 6: On the heels of a successful introduction last year, this Orient-themed weekend is making its second appearance in the Florida Renaissance Festival. This weekend brings us to the Far East to experience the sights and sounds of Shogun, Samurai, and the unbroken Ming dynasty that ruled China for almost 300 years.

* Kilts & Colleens – March 12 – 13: Kilt is what happened to the last person who called it a skirt! Celebrate the luck of the Irish with Scottish and Celtic traditions – bagpipes a’blarin’ – during this uniquely themed weekend.

* Time Travelers’ Weekend – March 19 – 20: Delorians here! This weekend is dedicated to adventurers across the millennia. Bring your brassies Victorian “gears” and join us for “Steampunk Saturday.” On Sunday, the village opens itself up to time traveling pioneers, aliens, Browncoats, Federations and Empires.

* Carnivale Masquerade РMarch 26 Р27 (Easter weekend): Let Winter wane and bring in the Spring with a f̻te to rival all others during our final weekend! The warm water outflows from the adjacent FPL Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center have attracted hundreds of manatees each year, particularly during the cold winter months. This new waterfront facility provides opportunities for the public to learn more about these marine mammals and what is needed to protect their environment.

The 16,000-sq.-ft. center offers free admission, two levels of exhibit and meeting space, a boardwalk to observe manatees in the Lake Worth Lagoon, picnic area, a pavilion, café and gift shop.

More than ever, cities are charged with carrying out national-level policies and are expected to be at the forefront of our response to climate change, housing inequality, job creation and public health. At the same time, most city government agencies are perennially understaffed and impeded by cumbersome, often backward regulations that leave them at odds with the private sector. Seemingly insurmountable frustrations are everywhere. So the big question is: Can meaningful changes be made in spite of these realities? Gabe Klein argues in his book, “Start-Up City,” that the answer is yes.

Klein formerly led the Chicago Department of Transportation under Mayor Rahm Emanuel and was director of the District Department of Transportation under Mayor Adrian Fenty in Washington, D.C. He launched Capital Bikeshare in Washington, the first large-scale bike-share system in the U.S. In Chicago he later launched Divvy, which is now the largest bike-share system in the U.S.

Before entering government, Klein honed his creativity and leadership skills working for startups, including Zipcar, where he served as vice president for four years. He also wrote a business model for the first point-to-point car-sharing concept. Klein sits on the boards of the National Association of City Transportation Officials and Streetsblog.

WHAT: Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), at 1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33132, will change its operating days as of January 2016. PAMM will be open on Mondays and closed on Wednesdays beginning Monday, January 4. This change was made in response to research indicating that there is more demand among the public for museum hours on Mondays, and that Wednesdays are the lowest attended days of the week.

Learn about the inspiration behind Miami Beach’s architecture. Look for the ocean liners and skyscrapers on Ocean Drive. Tour is approximately 30 minutes

Pop art with the Bass Museum
The Bass will present a fun pop art activity inspired by Andy Warhol’s Flowers series using familiar Warhol images and the Bass Museum of Art historic building. Cutting and pasting these images in repetitive Warhol style and using assorted colors of cellophane (Art deco colors: turquoise, yellow and pink!) to adorn the flowers and building, festival-goers will see the Bass in a whole new light!

Jamie’s Rescue
Jamie’s is a non-profit dog rescue in Miami, Florida. Their mission is to continue placing dogs and puppies that would remain on the streets or euthanized at local shelters. They have placed thousands of dogs in loving homes. They will have puppies presented in the Arf Deco parade that are available for adoption.

Sprouted Chef
Playing with produce, -Children will have the opportunity to build their-own gourmet lunch. Roasted carrot hotdogs and roasted strawberry pies. Sprouted chef is a culinary service dedicated to healthy living and supporting the local community and its environment.

On the Stage

11am: Arf Deco Dog Show and Parade
Bring your favorite dog in their Art Deco best or and fun costume. The parade and show is fun for dogs, dog owners and anyone who loves dogs. Parade starts and end at the Kids’ Club stage.
12pm: Three Mess-Keteers with Fantasy Theater Factory
The Prince of Pollution is at it again! This time the vile villain has kidnapped the Queen of Clean and it’s up to the ThreeMess-Keteers to save the day and the environment! The audience becomes part of the action in this hilariously educational show designed to teach children the importance of environmental conservation!
1pm: Sprouted Chef Live Demonstration
Eat to the New Year! – Professional chef demonstrating a couple of innovative healthy vegetable based dishes.
2pm: Miami Youth Symphony Jazz Band
Listen to some of Miami’s finest young musicians preform music that will out you in an Art Deco state of mind.
3:30pm Reading is Magic
Magician Jim Snack first became interested in magic after a sideshow magician made his head disappear! In order to learn about magic he visited his local public library and read everything he could find on the subject. He has been performing magic for over 40 years. In this show he not only dazzles with amazing magic but he also encourages children to discover their own magic in books. it’s a magic show with motivation!

MDPL’s guided walking tours are a great way to get a look at the Nationally Registered Art Deco Historic District and its architecture – Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern. Our tours are led by knowledgeable local architects, preservationists and historians. All tours last approximately 90 minutes. Times are subject to change, so please check when purchasing tickets.
Tickets are available at the MDPL Tour Booth in front of the Art Deco Welcome Center at 10th Street and Ocean Drive at the following throughout the festival or you can purchase online prior to the weekend.

Art Deco Weekend is happy to present the 6th Annual Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The Miami Design Preservation League has partnered with TATYANA, Iris Chase Designs, Beauty Touches Group, Belinda Designs and Beauty Schools of America to bring you an exciting hour of Art Deco Fashion and music!

MDPL’s resident artist, Iris Chase worked with Tatyana designers to pick out the best 1930s and 40s Tatyana creations to be presented in the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The best part? You can purchase your favorite styles and jewelry in the Official Art Deco Gift Shop following the show! The selected pieces reflect women’s style during the Art Deco era. Additionally, Belinda Designs has lent us a small selection of her couture 1920s dresses and headpieces for the show!

The models are delegates of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants and will walk to runway to modernized blends of famous 1930s tunes. Their hair and make-up will be done by the students from the Beauty School of America in some of our favorite 1930s and 40s looks. Think pin curls and red lipstick. Take a ChocoWalk and stop by the interactive Living History of Cacao and Chocolate Tent to hear from horticulturists, scientists, and chefs about the rich and fascinating history of cacao, this year featuring the chocolate harvesting and production methods of Colombia. Be sure to visit the Rainforest and Tropical Fruit Pavilion to see how real cacao pods grow on trees.
